My girlfriend and I are currently watching Frieren, when I looked it up a little bit and realized it was very similar to Ancient Magus Bride ( which is also amazing and I suggest watching/reading it ) I knew I had to introduce my girlfriend to Frieren and watch it with her as she loves Ancient Magus Bride. But, after watching this video, I've come to notice this story has happened before, I love Tolkien and D&D. And I've read almost every novel on both sources. The Legend of Drizzt is very familiar to this, of course with far more action, vastly more tragedy and dark themes, but overall, very much the same. Drizzt is a dark elf or Drow ( at the time of original writing, Drow were notoriously evil by nature ) And Drizzt was trained/taught by his father to be more Grey, as opposed to black/white in their way of thinking. But more importantly, though elves of all species in D&D live for thousands of years, not quite as long as Tolkien's immortal elves ( barring fatal wounds or illness ) Drizzt, though he doesn't realize it immediately, he has to come to terms with the fact that most of the people in his life will go away while he lives on. it's a very somber feeling, for him and the readers, as he comes to understand that those that are good could live such short lives, and some that are evil are eternal, how it's not fair, and it was never meant to be fair. That all one can do is perform as much good in the time that is given to them, to try and make the world better. ( SPOILERS AHEAD ) It sends him spiraling into depression when his final friend passes and he starts committing some questionable acts almost as if he's trying to get himself in enough trouble it will end his life. And though his attempts fail, he does get what he wants, in a way he wasn't quite expecting. The epilogue of Drizzt's story honestly had me in tears, because despite it being beautifully vindicating it was still bitter-sweet due to the consequences of his past adventures and those that he shared his life with. ( SEMI SPOILERS HERE ) The original series of his life, if I remember correctly is a whopping 26 books in total which makes sense for a long lived elf. There are more books that came after, I own some of them but can't bring myself to read them. And they have not released as many as previous, probably due to lack of popularity. The ending of Drizzt's story was near perfection and because Hasbro/WOTC wanted to make more money off the character, the author R.A. Salvatore was pressured into producing more with the new lore of the world given to him. It should have been left alone to not dishonor the magic that was Drizzt's and his many companion's beautiful story. The stories of Drizzt and Frieren are not a 1-1 match, but the concept of time plays a massive role in both. Developing relationships between people that are either evil/good by nature, trusting/mistrusting by culture and being conflicted in a world that is so black/white when you are morally grey. We are made by the influences of our environments, and although it's slow, we can learn to become greater than what made us.
Oh my lord , What an Amazing comment ! Thank you for watching the video ! I have yet to dive into tolkien , honestly , it feels like a rabbit hole that could suck up months of my life . But I wouldn't be opposed to reading a little about Drizzt's story. Also , I absolutely adore Ancient Magus Bride , probably a little more than Frieren. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that chise and Frieren have the same VA. It's a perfect amount of emotion and apathy in her voice to depict a complex character that can grow over the course of the story ! PS - IF YOU LIKE AMB , YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY TO KNOW ABOUT THE PROJECT , I AM WORKING ON RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT ! 🕊️
a rare win for the youtube algorithm! only noticed after finishing the video just what a hidden gem this channel is, hopefully it gains more traction cause it's well deserved :)
This is by far the best Frieren analysis i've seen. I was mind-blown when i heard about Frieren being the new Himmel in the party, never thought about that, but I think you're right, this show is full of symbolism and meaning.
Such a well-edited video. You deserve more views. I have watched countless videos regarding Frieren and I actually learned something from yours - i knew Serie was a big Tsun and does the opposite of what she says but I never noticed her smile when Frieren answered that she doesnt want spells, and that the joy lies behind the process of finding the spells. Flamme and Serie one of my favourite mother-daughter duo. When we had a flashback with small Flamme, I felt the sadness in her expression when talking to Frieren. She even forgot that she said "she doesnt want to honour Flamme's will" but then proceeded to tell Frieren "Do not regret your training, for it's either the Demon Lord, or a human mage who will be a the biggest threat to her" - completely accepting the fact she'll be doing exactly what Flamme said in her will, to teach humans their magic.
I don't deserve such kind words ! I am glad you enjoyed it . Honestly , I am just glad that I could add something new to the sea of Frieren essays . I loved this anime and I couldn't stop thinking about it the moment I started watching it. Thank you so much for taking your time and watching the video !
This video is the final push I needed to make a Frieren related playlist. I have watched a number of reactions and analyses but continued to hold off on collecting them together. Thanks for the great video.
@@Tasty_Pepesi It doesn't have too much yet, mostly Pey Talks Anime's exploring Frieren series and some random others but here you can find it on my page under my playlists. I made it public. Hopefully I will get the time to add more soon.
So I've seen quite a few video essays on Frieren and this is by far the most beautiful and deep I've seen. Got yourself a new sub! I just watched Frieren after ignoring it for a year and it's now my favorite anime of all time (took over FMAB's spot). It's the pacing, music, and animation that really did it for me.
I am glad that you decided to give Frieren the chance it deserves. I still haven't watched FMAB yet , and I am debating how to tackle that monster. Thank you for the sub. Look forward to more videos soon !
@@WkaiDart You should watch it, it's a gorgeous anime, it has a really good dub, the bad guys are fantastic, and both Ed and Al grow along the way. Plus it has Scar in it, easily my favorite character due to his backstory. It's a very close second for best anime ever made.
I hope everyone who enjoys frieren finds this. It's art about art. You've done such an exceptional job *frieren 'well done'*. Thank you, grateful to have found this. I love your drawings, I can tell you put your heart & soul into this video. Also I cracked up at your name translations towards the end...a man has good taste. Your commentary on the detail of this show had me looking a bit closer at this and I wound up finding a 4 leaf clover at 48:47. Just goes to show how much the people working on this show loved doing it. I know I'd feel I had to do my best and then some to tell a story this special.
Oh my lord , thank you so much ! That's probably the nicest comment I have gotten on this video. I am so glad you enjoyed this video . It's words like yours that make people like me what to keep going. Thank you !
A beautiful thumbnail. Fairy tale edit that brings the fantasy aesthetic. Gentle narrator voice. Straight to the point yet is poetic. Subbed and liked. May your journey be wonferful and channel grows!
Absolutely an excellent review of the first season 1 of Frieren. I have read the manga 6 times all the way through, and the anime 5, yet it remains fresh and new. Knowing everything that happens does not spoil the experience of watching and reading a masterpiece of art. The story is the magic of storytelling itself. Any work which can lock me into feeling for a character in the very first chapter, or the very first episode, and know nothing about him, is incredible. Everything about Frieren:Beyond Journey's End is just pure enjoyment!
I'm a simple Man, i see frieren thumbnail and just click and watch totally. Amazing video thank you for keeping the fandom alive. Its the best anime of the New generation. I love só much that hurts. Thank you.
Not sure how you only have (well now) 69 subs....but Noice~ More seriously this video is amazing. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into it. I have also watched frieren way more times than is probably healthy....think I'm up to 12 or 13 now. I think it is interesting how the titles meaning is so different in EN and JP. Also the play on words in Japanese of sousou......depending on the kanji it can have lots of meanings, the one used in the title is "at a funeral" or undertaker generally.....the show translates it as slayer in the EN subtitles (more literally one who buries another) but it can also mean esteemed or distinguished or also to be in a rush. Just thought it was interesting.
There are so many different ways go interpret the title but all of them fit so well , the one who buries another is just 😭... Thank you for taking your time to watch the video , Hope I didn't ramble on too much !
10:07 i see what you did there 😏 Thanks for the video! Nice drawings! Look so complex... Regarding Frieren praying, she starts praying in the hut with Craft, otherwise that would be illogical for her to continue this habit(imo).

I had to stop watching at 7 minutes because I was doing something else and I don’t know which moments you’re using to make your points. I love listening to video essays while I work but I don’t know why sometimes people choose to use the sub. It just makes for a worse listening experience.

I partially agree , I wouldn't say none but it would definitely be a cult classic. The visuals are always important to the overall presentation. I wouldn't have cared to check out the show so soon if it didn't have spectacular visuals. But the story and characters can definitely hold their own in a vacuum. And reading your comment tells me you clearly don't appreciate the story and the characters in the story , so just enjoy the pretty flashes and boom boom , the rest of us can enjoy both.
