@Peighnis Honourchign true but only for the interview in the later half of the video. In the first half of the video it felt like someone was being held up at gun point.
Though, to be honest... A Victorian era "selfie stick" joke wouldn't be all that bad of an idea, given how that was a time of large-scale innovation and progress in itself. And the idea of some self-photographing device would likely just seem like one of the more eccentric forms of experimental technology at the time.
It's not a terrible joke in-and-of-itself, it's just ruined by: 1. The fact that it's been almost a decade since people were making fun of "duck face" selfies 2. Ferrell's platypus line, which doesn't make sense (they had ducks back then!) and seems to just be there because it's a weird word to say. 3. The way that, like a lot of bad SNL-style American comedy, it takes a really simple joke and stretches it out for far too long. There are a few gags like that in the movie that *almost* work, but completely sabotage themselves because the people involved had no restraint and seemed to think that 'more'=funny.
@@retrogamelover2012 That would've been funny. The worst part is that Hugh Laurie, a comedian who is best known for playing a character heavily based off of Sherlock Holmes, plays a minor character when he could have made a much better Sherlock.
@skeptic party Lol, dude this was supposed to be a dumb Ferrell and Reilly comedy first, them being Holmes and Watson is secondary. 'Laurie could've made a better Holmes' would be missing the point, the raison d'etre of this vehicle.
The first time I ever met my long-time girlfriend's dad, he took us to see this movie in theaters. I hated every second but I thought I'd have to pretend to like it just so I'd make a good first impression and he wouldn't think I was a snob or something. As soon as it ended he leaned over to my girlfriend and I and said "...that was pretty bad." and I don't think I've ever breathed a bigger sigh of relief in my life.

I think John C. Reilly does these movies because he genuinely enjoys just doing stupid improv with Will Ferrell. IHE does mention that he seemed to be taking the performance more seriously. I'm pretty sure he knows he's in dumpster movies and just chooses to do them because they're fun for him, like Adam Sandler every time he takes his friends on vacation for a movie
Watching the actors talk about the movie and then actually seeing the movie is such a mindfuck, it's like in the interviews they're talking about a totally different movie
Idk if it's impossible to do a serious comedy murder mystery cause hot fuzz does it amazingly, will Ferrell just doesn't compare to Simon pegg and edgar Wright
I don't think it was intended to sound genuine; this film was supposed to be a cheap parody of the Guy Ritchie Sherlock films, and Guy Ritchie (who is English) famously referred to Robert Downy Jr.'s British accent as, "Better than mine". But I'm probably giving this too much credit.
The interviews for this movie encapsulate why I can’t sit through late-night talk show interviews or press junket interviews. They comes across as so artificial and awkward.
You're right!! It's "work" for the person being interviewed. Having to sit down with a person you most likely don't know and they expect the actor to be charming and funny. That's gotta be harder than it seems; especially for actors who have anxiety disorders... Most comedic actors!!
That's why I can't stand hollywood in general. EVERYONE is fake. No successful actor you will ever meet has a genuine personality. They all wear masks, all of them. It makes talking to them an uncanny experience, you just feel like something's...off. If feels very artificial, because it is. Good actors have to be able to slip in and out of characters with such ease, that they have suppressed their own to put on this overly friendly, outgoing façade. It's creepy!
I think the Christmas movie “Elf” is the reason his popularity resurges every year and he keeps getting rehired. He turns shit into gold. For years it was enough to get me to watch one of his films.
Will Farrell should have never left SNL. He is not a lead character, he is not not funny in feature-length movies, he is barely funny in a 7 minute comic skit.
I took my mother to England for a holiday and one of the palaces she really wanted to visit was partly closed because they were shooting scenes from this movie there. she was sad, but tried to save the mood by saying "well at least we can check out the movie once we get home". I googled it and never let her watch it to spare her the disappointment.
I remember walking out of the theater, sad that I had wasted money on this. And a guy comes into the bathroom behind me with the biggest grin on his face and says "do you think they'll make another?" I hope they do for you buddy
Will Ferrell was in a great serious movie where, unknowingly, he is the main character in a book being written by an accomplished writer with writer's block, though it all takes place in the real world. I can't recall the name of it, but I enjoyed it when I really didn't think I would.
Stranger than Fiction! It was jarring seeing him in a more serious movie at first but I thought he did great in it. He really nailed playing a serious role while still keeping some aspects of comedy.
@@grodeejodee9815 I loved that movie too! A great movie and a great performance from Will Ferrell. Completely agree, it was a bit strange, seeing Will Ferrell in a slightly more "serious", but still funny movie. I didn't know if he could do it at first, but as the movie went on, I was impressed by how talented Will Ferrell could be, WITHOUT constantly screaming his head off. But, as a kid, I also enjoyed his role in "A Night At The Roxbury", which was a bit serious too, and sorta like a proto Step Brothers type movie, but that movie's ok, but Stranger Than Fiction is like a more dramatic comedy, but is more of a drama. But I did like how Ferrell stepped out of his comfort zone to do something more dramatic. One of his best roles. But, then, he sadly returned to doing a lot more manchild comedies. Which actually can work in some instances, I mean, Step Brothers is pretty funny and dramatic in some places, and is relatable, but as much as I like Will Ferrell and John Reiley, their chemistry doesn't work for this particular movie. It's just like they're trying to do an unfunny parody skit of the Robert Downey Jr. And Jude Law Sherlock Holmes and Watson, not actually trying to be a funny version of either character, but since both Downey and Jude Law were ALREADY pretty funny in their Sherlock Holmes movies, was there any need for the Step Brothers to basically cosplay as them, or play as the British ancestors of the Step Brothers? I mean, surely, there must've been a better way to reunite the Step Brothers, than by ruining the great Sherlock Holmes's and Watson's characters? No? Oh well. I still enjoy Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as actors, occasionally, like in Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Zoolander, Step Brothers, Stranger Than Fiction, those, are still some of Will Ferrell's and John Reiley's best roles. But, Sherlock is not a good role for him, this time anyways. If you wanted to see this done right, why not just go and watch the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies? Those still hold up well, or, why wouldn't you go and watch Hot Fuzz(like someone in the comments suggested). That's ALSO a great movie, with 2 British guys, trying to solve mysteries, with a slightly dark comedic setting, and both characters have great chemistry together too, and both lead actors(Simon Pegg as Nick Angel and Nick Frost,), are doing a great job, and have also worked together on other movies like Shaun of the Dead, The World's End, and are basically just really good at playing both dramatic and funny roles. Sorry if this went off-track or went on too long.
That onion scene could easily be at least mildly amusing if holmes were the only manchild. He eloquently explains they increase your blood cell count, but then he bites the onion recklessly and starts making a sour face, watson says "holmes i can cut it up for you, spit it out!" then holmes says no all muffled like the stubborn baby he is and then they start futzing around with eachother and bam theres a punchline. But i guess both of them just eating onions like apples was the wacky grosser option.
The great comedy teams of the past knew how to do this. You had the funny guy and you had the straight man. It seems to be a lost art in Hollywood. Comedians compete with each other instead of cooperate.
@@NotAHandle22 i dont think its a lost art, its widly still recognized as a basic comedy method lol. I think its mainly the two actors being given way too much room to do whatever they want. Plus their style in general doesnt fit holmes and watson in the first place.
The general premise of manchild Holmes COULD be funny, if he was still intelligent in crime solving and his partner was a good straight man. Watch one trailer for this movie and it's immediately clear neither of those things were true
@@chuckbatmangaming You need to see the movie «Witout a Clue». It did basically this premiss. Well Holmes was basically just the front man while Watson was actually the brains of the opperation, but it worked.
@@MissCaraMint Eh. Thats kind of dissapointing. Id prefer to see a movie with a humorous parody holmes that's still intelligent. Like if him plotting to swat the mosquito was him perfectly timing a swing to knock it into an approaching mans mouth to avoid any mess or something. And then as the guys wretching and gagging in the background holmes just purses his lip and says "perfect". Meanwhile watsons in another room yelling for him to put the golf club down and to let him get a napkin to kill it. I dont know why i keep thinking of better versions of this movies scenes lol

I'd say that (the US name) Santa Claus despite his name being from Dutch owes a lot more to the English Father Christmas than the Dutch Sinterklaas or German Nikolaus, Christkind or Krampus (amongst others). The French Père Noël is quite similar also. Obviously the US has more influences from outside the UK than the UK itself, where I am based. A lot of traditions we take for granted now were also popularised by 'A Christmas Carol' by the English author Charles Dickens.
Mike Hancho people think die hard is a Christmas movie not cause it’s “vaguely released at the same time of year” but Because it takes place on Christmas Eve and the plot takes place at an office Christmas party and there are many Christmas decorations visible throughout the movie and Bruce Willis himself references that’s it’s Christmas time by dressing up corpse as Santa and through some of the one liners and there are a few Christmas songs in the soundtrack. It’s very obviously intending itself to be a Christmas movie
@Mike Hancho Die Hard is a Christmas movie. It is set at Christmas. It has Christmas songs. It makes heavy references to Christmas. It's even about family, which is a classic theme of Christmas movies. They can also be action movies about fighting terrorists to rescue your estranged wife.

honestly most comedic takes I've seen on Sherlock Holmes utterly miss the point of the appeal of Holmes stories, usually as a direct result of making Holmes 'funny'. I'll admit, "Balloons are happy but they're not alive" got a small chuckle out of me. As far as "lulrandom" humour goes, at least the delivery is half-decent and it's a legitimately odd and confusing statement that makes me want to gain some insight into the character's reasoning. Instead of just shouting words that someone thought sounds funny. In fact, from this video alone I'm more invested in sack-on-head guy than anything else. He should've replaced Ferrell as the lead.
@@henith7850 Probably because in Elf, Will Ferrell was the only truly insane character in that movie. Everyone else balanced out his character by being more rational, even the elves were more serious in their own weird way. Didnt Britain make that Nazi concentration camp sitcom thay was god awful and immediatly brought down? It's an american thing yes, but its not just americas thing nor is it exclusively an american issue. Remember, Airplane was also American and the film was beat for beat a great comedy. It just depends on the creative minds in charge, whos style and quality fluxtuates indiscriminately by location. Americans really hold the high bar for musical story telling, animation (Alongside Japan) and crime drama. I will happily admit that the british thrive with nearly all forms of comedy on the big screen and they are especially good at war films as well. Its just like music taste, where it really depends on what the region seems to like best. Brits got the best rockstars (Beatles, Queen, bowie) where Americans got the best folkstars. (Bob Dylan, John Denver, Paul Simon) And there are certain genres both countries thrive in, such as Fantasy Horror and Sci Fi - the big trio. (Music wise being pop of course haha) When it comes to mystery, i think it depends. I think britain pulls off good whodunnits and murder mysteries best, where Americans pull off crime mysteries and noir great.

The worst part is this is such an easy idea to get right. You essentially have the most meme-able character in fiction: a freelancer detective who always manages to guess the right answers out of nowhere, explains them in a way that baffles other people and makes no sense upon closer inspection, snorts cocaine to keep himself occupied, constantly belittles people, is insanely weird and idiosyncratic, who takes himself incredibly serious and has a head-scratching rivalry with a influential nobleman, and you manage to screw that up? It’s almost more impressive the movie is so bad.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how talented people like Rebecca Hall, Kelly MacDonald & Rob Brydon are to talk about this film in a positive light?
They were PAID to do so, it's part of the contract to go on promotional trips to talk shows, conventions etc. The "questions" on talk shows are deliberately soft-balls AND pre-coordinated so the meat-sacks that recite someone else's words don't have to think...
All of these recent adaptations I find it strange that sherlock-holmes-in-the-22nd-century was seemingly forgotten. I guess because that cartoon series was watchable...
They took Holmes, Sherlock Holmes, a genius, a detective like no other, and humiliated him beyond recognition simply for profit and pride. How shameful.
I agree for the most part; I just wanted to point out, regarding "a genius", a big part of the books, if you look carefully, is that Holmes _isn't_ a genius; he isn't operating by talent, but by observational and reasoning skills that he's worked long and hard at to develop. In fact, he even gets annoyed whenever, after explaining his methods, Watson refers to it as remarkable or genius. He's even happy to be outsmarted, as he always feels that he has more to learn.
@@matthewmuir8884 Meh, the ability to work meticulously and have enough observational skill IS already a talent. It requires curiosity to develop any cognitival skill because otherwise you get bored to a point where advancing is simply impossible. With physical skills you can still train them through repetition, even when they get boring. But mental tasks don´t work that way, at least not if they require creativity, which Sherlocks work does require. So yeah, he is a genius. Because if he wasnt then no amount of work could improve him to where he is mentally.
@@SangerZonvolt Okay. True. I was just saying that the books go out of their way to empathize that he isn't the amazing talented mega-genius that a lot of modern adaptations like to portray him as; that his skills come down to a lot of hard work and dedication. There's even a short story where the whole point of it is that his deduction turns out to be completely wrong and he takes it as a learning opportunity; telling Watson to remind him of this case if he ever seems like he's becoming arrogant or overconfident about a deduction.
Without a Clue is an actual comedic Sherlock Holmes movie that works. Michael Caine plays an idiotic Sherlock and it’s one of my favorite comedies of all time.

IHE: They designed the movie to be bad and didn’t even realize it. You cannot convince me that they didn’t know full well that this would be terrible. If we work from the assumptions that they never intended for the movie to be for the audience to enjoy but for them to have fun making, then that explains a lot. Why bother propperly editing a movie that is designed to be bad in the first place. Why bother propperly filming and dubbing? Why bother placing restraints or writing a script? It makes sence. This was just an expencive, extended, silly improve session.

The worst part is that Hugh Laurie, a comedian who is best known for playing a character heavily based off of Sherlock Holmes, plays a minor character when he could have made a much better Sherlock.
Not only that, he also has an amazing comedic background with roles in Blackadder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

You're right!! It's "work" for the person being interviewed. Having to sit down with a person you most likely don't know and they expect the actor to be charming and funny. That's gotta be harder than it seems; especially for actors who have anxiety disorders... Most comedic actors!!

It makes talking to them an uncanny experience, you just feel like something's...off. If feels very artificial, because it is.
That onion scene could easily be at least mildly amusing if holmes were the only manchild. But i guess both of them just eating onions like apples was the wacky grosser option.

@@NotAHandle22 i dont think its a lost art, its widly still recognized as a basic comedy method lol. I think its mainly the two actors being given way too much room to do whatever they want. Plus their style in general doesnt fit holmes and watson in the first place.

Arent modern christmas traditions from germany?
@@insertmemorableusernameher6795 They are a mix, but I'd say in the UK and US they are mostly English traditions (with some German traditions via UK which where taken to the USA; most of these coming from the fact the Royal Family were partly German); and there is a tiny bit from the Dutch (via New Amsterdam/New York) and French.

It’s very obviously intending itself to be a Christmas movie
@Mike Hancho Die Hard is a Christmas movie. It is set at Christmas. It has Christmas songs. It makes heavy references to Christmas. It's even about family, which is a classic theme of Christmas movies.

(Bob Dylan, John Denver, Paul Simon)
And there are certain genres both countries thrive in, such as Fantasy Horror and Sci Fi - the big trio. (Music wise being pop of course haha)

I get the impression that a lot of comedy producers these days seem to think that _loud + awkward = funny_ and most of the time it just comes across as cringey and annoying.
@@mechazoic It's a cancerous trend as on the first viewing it may be funny, its not something that can be rewatched. Also the Loud and Awkward approach to comedy is something that completely alienates other markets such as the UK.
I can watch Naked Gun now on my 6th or 7th time and I'll find it funny still and laugh out loud, Can't say i'd ever say the same for even Ferrell's Greatest hits like Anchorman.
@@Reddsoldier Preaching to the choir there mate. I’m from the UK myself and grew up with comedies like Blackadder, Allo Allo and Fawlty Towers. Even in their more madcap moments, there was always a bit of depth to the storylines, this recent crop seems to think you can just have someone saying or doing stupid things for two hours and it will be funny.
@@mechazoic Naked Gun got duplicated by other movies by the same director, though :D
Also - Uh, HotShots got pretty close.
You have to appreciate how a TH-camr, CallMeCarson, did the “Eating a raw onion” thing infinitely better than this official big name Hollywood film.

“Merry Old England an’ all.”
Absolutely shameless.
Poppycock! Poppycock!
Will is on a dark path. We cannot save him, he cannot even save himself. We must simply watch in horror as will walks the Adam Sandler path.
Dear God, you're right...
when you said "dark path" i thought you were gonna bring up his association with marina abramovic lol.
John C. Riley is in a Disney film, has proven he has acting chops and loves the art form.
Will Ferrel is the guy who thinks he’s funny but can’t read a room to any degree.
I liked Will a lot on SNL, and he's a very good actor when the spotlight isn't on him and he's a side character
@@LordSluggo True, he was great in Zoolander and Lego Movie. He was also pretty good in Old School.
@Nick Lawson Not to mention his best movie, Gangs of New York.
Will has a few movies I enjoyed, he's not all bad but definitely egotistical is the vibe I get
@@LordSluggo To be fair, he was great in Megamind, and he was the protagonist there
The Guy Ritchie movies are already full of wild over-the-top comedy to the point of parody, especially Game of Shadows.
"Lay with me, Watson." still cracks me up every time. Jude Law and RDJ made the perfect duo.
From an American to an Englishman, with all sincerity:
Jeez guy, I'm sorry you had to be subjected to this awful crap.
Like Alfred Hitchcock once said: "Cinema was a mistake."
@Basiic Still better than that movie
Would you say the same applies to the internet?
@@hewhobattles8869 Oh, the internet is on an entirely different level of being a mistake. Somewhere between unwanted children and anime.

@Peighnis Honourchign so he could have the fun he wanted but the movie didn't give him I'd guess
If the writers had done some, maybe the movie would have been less dull.
That's what the producers thought before making the movie
All of these recent adaptations I find it strange that sherlock-holmes-in-the-22nd-century was seemingly forgotten. I guess because that cartoon series was watchable...
They took Holmes, Sherlock Holmes, a genius, a detective like no other, and humiliated him beyond recognition simply for profit and pride. How shameful.
And did it again in Enola Holmes.
@@matthewmuir8884
Meh, the ability to work meticulously and have enough observational skill IS already a talent.
Batman is the best detective
Watching clips of those interviewed actors trying desperately to comprehend what they just made into a full-length movie is honestly more funny than the movie itself.
John C. Reilly is actually a good actor, idk how he roped into all this shit.
A big paycheque, probably.
This makes me flash back to the third Crocodile Dundee as well as The Producers and wonder is it a money laundering scheme?
@Peighnis Honourchign Wops😅
That is a good point, they have enough money that they don't even care if it's good or bad
hey, they tried really hard to make it terrible.

They have to put more acting ability into the interview than the movie
I once audition for a play in my late high school years, we were all put in a large barren room and told to wait until the casting director came and called one of us up, there were about 850 people in my school and over 78 people came to audition for the star role, when I sat down in the chairs lined against the door I saw three teachers were next to the door watching us, they said if anyone talked or messed around we not be auditioning, only four were stupid enough to get kick out, so you just sat there and barley moved, there was nothing in the room except a clock ticking, it uaslly took a person 1 minute to do the audition in front of the director and be marked on how well they did and reviews, so I sat there and waited and waited for them to call me and in the end I sat there for 1 hour and 20 minutes in a blank silent room of people, and I still had more funny, interesting and thoughtful then when I payed 30 to go sit down and watch this film
