15:27 Wall-E is one of my favorite movies of all time and I have to talk about how genius the character design in that movie is. The still I timestamped illustrates Wall-E contrasted against a row of identical-looking humanoid blobs. Pixar's generally fantastic character design that allows everyone to leave a distinct impression on the audience is intentionally dropped to illustrate the fact that humans in this timeline have become nameless and virtually faceless copies of each other as we allowed technology to control more and more of our lives. That's why Wall-E is partially terrifying to me, a feeling I don't get with any other Pixar movie. Illumination could never, ever pull something like this off because all their characters look bland and featureless anyway

It's not even a running joke like they think it is, it's the same one. Running jokes are similar ones that are executed differently, but no matter how much you spin or turn it, Illumination ALWAYS starts their film with their bland logo and a minion doing random shit that has nothing to do with it.

I always think of this movie as cheap Zootopia. While Zootopia was so colorful and creative in its world design to adjust to animal needs, Sing is just a normal world (demanding the question of 'why are they animals?') with a very flat color palette.

Just the bit where they show Zootopia to compare it, the animation and graphical fidelity is infinitely more complex. Fur is rendered much better, lighting is amazing with proper shadow contrast and light ray effects, and most of all it doesn't have the brightly over-colored, yet "flat" look that Sing has.

Not sure why but the character designs in this movie upset me. Especially the pig mom, there's something terribly annoying in her design and animation.
The reason we get upset at "harmless" movies like this, is that the mere existence and continued success of low-budget HUGE gain movies encourages the rest of the market to do the same. Why spend 200 million on a movie that'll make about 400 - 500 million, when you could spend 60-70 million and make the same amount of money? It's low-risk high reward, and as long as they continuously pump out the same formula for making money, other companies may begin to question if they should really be spending so much on producing a movie. Then, eventually, almost all the movies will be a dull and garbage.
Counter point: A24's whole business model is based on this low risk huge gain model and we get some bangers from them. Cost isnt the issue either way to be honest. I'm sure I'll piss someone off but Disney is just as guilty with the last few years of Marvel movies. It's just mediocre nonsense that somehow gets butts into seats.

Literally the first thing I thought of when I saw this movie was Zootopia rip-off with singing. You don't even need to watch the movie to be utterly disappointed by the complete lack of any sort of wink and nod to what animal they were. While Zootopia makes constant jokes about what stereotypes would persist in a world of humanoid animals living together and even centers the plot around it, Sing literally uses animals for the sake of using animals.
True, although I found the Russian bears a nice reference, mostly because of the lack of cleverness in the other characters. I mean even the bankrobbing team of the Dad gorilla could have a lot of fun using different animals for different tasks which match their physique. No they are all bulky gorilla's and one generic crocodile, which as pointed out is seen so much through the movie that he doesn'st stand out whatsoever.
It’s sad that animated movies with really unique and special concepts, like Rango, Kubo and the Two Strings, and The Prince of Egypt only being moderately to lightly successful, while easily digestible Illumination fluff makes hundreds of millions. These are movies with lots of creative effort and passion poured into them, and it’s frustrating to see corporate trash do so much better financially.

If I were Nintendo, I would have partnered with Studio Ghibli instead. The NES and SNES Mario and Zelda games had their original cover art and manual artwork drawn by a former Ghibli animator. It could save Studio Ghibli from their financial woes since the 2010s. If I want Ghibli to have a worldwide blockbuster release for their films, we would team up with Lucasfilm, which has a close relationship with Studio Ghibli, especially since Kathleen Kennedy coproduced Ponyo, Arrietty, and From Up on Poppy Hill. Imagine if the Mario movie instead opened with Disney, Lucasfilm, Nintendo and Studio Ghibli logos, and was in 2D animation inspired by the NES/SNES cover art and manuals. Keep the Mario fanservice, but maybe some Star Wars references to remind that Lucasfilm coproduced would just be tacky.

When I first saw the "Sing" poster I thought it was a Zootopia sequel, because in Russia Zootopia is called "Зверополис" (Zoo-city) and Sing is called "Зверопой" (Zoo-sing). Great marketing, cuz I watched that movie only because I really liked Zootopia
I just watched Sing 2 a week ago. It's an improvement over the first one, but it's the epitome of "Style, Over Substance". It's still as bare bones and forgettable as the the first Sing. I'm sure the only thing people remember about this movie is Porsha, for....obvious reasons.
Ritz Crackerz The one thing I really don't like about the Sing characters, and Illuminations style in general is that they never seem to have a good concept of exaggeration balancing realism. They make their characters realistic enough that stylized parts look out of place. The pig noses in Sing look flat because the rest of the body looks human and some animals just look disproportionate. I agree that the animation itself is pretty smooth, but with technology as it is, it's not as hard to animate.
Y'know what? I wouldn't even say the character designs are BAD, per say. I would just call them incredibly generic. The only thing that defines one character from another is the kind of clothing they wear. Compared to Zootopia, where animal's physical characteristics are very well caricatured and play a role in defining them as characters, this is just incredibly lazy and uncreative.
As The Atomic Fox said, I don't think they're unatractive or out of place. They're just "middle of the road". They're servicable. They do their job without being memorable. Not bad, just not really good either.
Now call me stupid, but I don't quite understand IHE's/Ralphthemoviemaker's point about character design. It's possible and even fairly likely that I just don't know enough about character design to get what they're talking about (which is a bit worrying since I'm aiming for a career in writing or game design or some creative field), but honestly I don't see what's so bad about the Gorilla's design or so great about Sully's design. They both seem about on par to me; I can tell the same amount about each character just by looking at them, but it's less about how they're designed and more about how they're posed or the facial expressions they have in their respected photographs.
I'm guessing that Illumination spent 50 million dollars on getting the soundtrack and the big name actors, and 25 million dollars for everything else, making up this film's 75 million dollar budget. It's like they REALLY wanted to focus on the soundtrack and star power than the actual film.
My main problem is that while it is bland and generic, it is not so bad the you can laugh ironically. It Is just 3/10 quality, so inoffensive that even a movie that is technically worse, like the Bee movie, is at least more enjoyable and memberable

I always think of this movie as cheap Zootopia. While Zootopia was so colorful and creative in its world design to adjust to animal needs, Sing is just a normal world (demanding the question of 'why are they animals?') with a very flat color palette.
This movie is the generic bag cereal version of Zootopia.

Just the bit where they show Zootopia to compare it, the animation and graphical fidelity is infinitely more complex. Fur is rendered much better, lighting is amazing with proper shadow contrast and light ray effects, and most of all it doesn't have the brightly over-colored, yet "flat" look that Sing has.
you have a good point there. Plus the animation quality is generally better in Zootopia. The animation looks scarily like reality, at least in my opinion. I haven't seen Sing, and yet I can say that it doesn't really look like reality.

The reason we get upset at "harmless" movies like this, is that the mere existence and continued success of low-budget HUGE gain movies encourages the rest of the market to do the same. Why spend 200 million on a movie that'll make about 400 - 500 million, when you could spend 60-70 million and make the same amount of money?
It's low-risk high reward, and as long as they continuously pump out the same formula for making money, other companies may begin to question if they should really be spending so much on producing a movie. Then, eventually, almost all the movies will be a dull and garbage.
Counter point: A24's whole business model is based on this low risk huge gain model and we get some bangers from them.
Cost isnt the issue either way to be honest. I'm sure I'll piss someone off but Disney is just as guilty with the last few years of Marvel movies. It's just mediocre nonsense that somehow gets butts into seats.

Literally the first thing I thought of when I saw this movie was Zootopia rip-off with singing. You don't even need to watch the movie to be utterly disappointed by the complete lack of any sort of wink and nod to what animal they were. While Zootopia makes constant jokes about what stereotypes would persist in a world of humanoid animals living together and even centers the plot around it, Sing literally uses animals for the sake of using animals.

True, although I found the Russian bears a nice reference, mostly because of the lack of cleverness in the other characters. I mean even the bankrobbing team of the Dad gorilla could have a lot of fun using different animals for different tasks which match their physique. No they are all bulky gorilla's and one generic crocodile, which as pointed out is seen so much through the movie that he doesn'st stand out whatsoever.
It’s sad that animated movies with really unique and special concepts, like Rango, Kubo and the Two Strings, and The Prince of Egypt only being moderately to lightly successful, while easily digestible Illumination fluff makes hundreds of millions. These are movies with lots of creative effort and passion poured into them, and it’s frustrating to see corporate trash do so much better financially.

If I were Nintendo, I would have partnered with Studio Ghibli instead.
The NES and SNES Mario and Zelda games had their original cover art and manual artwork drawn by a former Ghibli animator.
It could save Studio Ghibli from their financial woes since the 2010s.
If I want Ghibli to have a worldwide blockbuster release for their films, we would team up with Lucasfilm, which has a close relationship with Studio Ghibli, especially since Kathleen Kennedy coproduced Ponyo, Arrietty, and From Up on Poppy Hill.
Imagine if the Mario movie instead opened with Disney, Lucasfilm, Nintendo and Studio Ghibli logos, and was in 2D animation inspired by the NES/SNES cover art and manuals.
Keep the Mario fanservice, but maybe some Star Wars references to remind that Lucasfilm coproduced would just be tacky.

When I first saw the "Sing" poster I thought it was a Zootopia sequel, because in Russia Zootopia is called "Зверополис" (Zoo-city) and Sing is called "Зверопой" (Zoo-sing). Great marketing, cuz I watched that movie only because I really liked Zootopia

I just watched Sing 2 a week ago. It's an improvement over the first one, but it's the epitome of "Style, Over Substance". It's still as bare bones and forgettable as the the first Sing. I'm sure the only thing people remember about this movie is Porsha, for....obvious reasons.

Ritz Crackerz The one thing I really don't like about the Sing characters, and Illuminations style in general is that they never seem to have a good concept of exaggeration balancing realism. They make their characters realistic enough that stylized parts look out of place. The pig noses in Sing look flat because the rest of the body looks human and some animals just look disproportionate. I agree that the animation itself is pretty smooth, but with technology as it is, it's not as hard to animate.
Y'know what? I wouldn't even say the character designs are BAD, per say. I would just call them incredibly generic. The only thing that defines one character from another is the kind of clothing they wear. Compared to Zootopia, where animal's physical characteristics are very well caricatured and play a role in defining them as characters, this is just incredibly lazy and uncreative.

As The Atomic Fox said, I don't think they're unatractive or out of place. They're just "middle of the road". They're servicable. They do their job without being memorable. Not bad, just not really good either.
I wouldn't consider the designs to be "bad" because you can hardly criticize something that doesn't exist.
Now call me stupid, but I don't quite understand IHE's/Ralphthemoviemaker's point about character design. It's possible and even fairly likely that I just don't know enough about character design to get what they're talking about (which is a bit worrying since I'm aiming for a career in writing or game design or some creative field), but honestly I don't see what's so bad about the Gorilla's design or so great about Sully's design. They both seem about on par to me; I can tell the same amount about each character just by looking at them, but it's less about how they're designed and more about how they're posed or the facial expressions they have in their respected photographs.

They spent 98% of their budget on the soundtrack and the other 2% on writing the story
I'm guessing that Illumination spent 50 million dollars on getting the soundtrack and the big name actors, and 25 million dollars for everything else, making up this film's 75 million dollar budget. It's like they REALLY wanted to focus on the soundtrack and star power than the actual film.
Writing doesn't cost any budget though unless you're counting extremely expensive writers
