The interview with Nick Kroll reminded me of when TJ Miller was interviewed for the Emoji Movie and he was giving about the same answers that "it's a unique story" and "everyone really believed in it" but you could tell by his tone and body language that it was nothing more than a paycheck movie.

You teach kids that only winning is acceptable and you don’t get kids who always give it their all, you end up with insecure kids who will never attempt anything new because they’re so terrified of not being good at it.

It's not even a running joke like they think it is, it's the same one. Running jokes are similar ones that are executed differently, but no matter how much you spin or turn it, Illumination ALWAYS starts their film with their bland logo and a minion doing random shit that has nothing to do with it.

I'm guessing that Illumination spent 50 million dollars on getting the soundtrack and the big name actors, and 25 million dollars for everything else, making up this film's 75 million dollar budget. It's like they REALLY wanted to focus on the soundtrack and star power than the actual film.

Rango has the creepiest character designs of any movie that I absolutely love. I have trouble adjusting to them every time I watch that film, but they totally work.
As a kid I never found it creepy. I always preferred semi realistic animal designs over a cartoony one. Rango is really creative for using the animal’s features as a design. Rattlesnake Jake has a gun for a rattle. There’s also a mouse that has long fur that they used as a beard. Really underrated work.
15:27 Wall-E is one of my favorite movies of all time and I have to talk about how genius the character design in that movie is. The still I timestamped illustrates Wall-E contrasted against a row of identical-looking humanoid blobs. Pixar's generally fantastic character design that allows everyone to leave a distinct impression on the audience is intentionally dropped to illustrate the fact that humans in this timeline have become nameless and virtually faceless copies of each other as we allowed technology to control more and more of our lives. That's why Wall-E is partially terrifying to me, a feeling I don't get with any other Pixar movie. Illumination could never, ever pull something like this off because all their characters look bland and featureless anyway

Just the bit where they show Zootopia to compare it, the animation and graphical fidelity is infinitely more complex. Fur is rendered much better, lighting is amazing with proper shadow contrast and light ray effects, and most of all it doesn't have the brightly over-colored, yet "flat" look that Sing has.

For the most part, I generally hear others say the same thing. It's an okay movie, maybe even kinda good! Heck, even the character design of the main characters was passable (going off of the main character and the scientist character). But I think a lot of people grew to hate it in retrospect *purely* because it introduced the minions. That alone has dragged down the movie a ton... Such a shame...
Tbf to the creators of BoJack Horseman, they chose to have most of their characters be animals so they could explore darker themes whilst not getting too dark
I actually really like despicable me (THE FIRST ONE) bc the story was actually kind of unique, and I think focussing on themes of how an adopted family can struggle to grow together is really nice. The minions were annoying but definitely a secondary gag. Gru has a good character design, I could tell right away that he was a goofy Doofenshmirtz-esc villain. The girls are cute and different enough to be identifiable (the eldest responsible one, the tomboy, and the imaginative goofball). But oh lord, when that movie succeeded they literally took all the FAULTS of the movie and made them the PREMISE for the sequels!! and the worst part is it worked!!
That's exactly what I thought. D Me one was original. I liked the villain's transformation and the characters were well formed. The minions were just enough of a distraction to be fun. D Me 2 was annoying, unneccessary, and gave the minions way too big of a role. It pushed it over into the irritating category and unwatchable for me.
I always think of this movie as cheap Zootopia. While Zootopia was so colorful and creative in its world design to adjust to animal needs, Sing is just a normal world (demanding the question of 'why are they animals?') with a very flat color palette.
It seems like sponge bob had a bunch of ideas that got turned into full movies. The one that comes to my mind is the part where sponge bob's mind people threw out his name, and Inside Out (I think it was called?)
I use Alex’s voice to help me fall to sleep before 4am, he sounds so bored it makes me bored and not have the will to live so I smother myself with a pillow until I pass out.
I think Sing could have worked if it had a plot that went something like this: the contest papers are sent out, and as the characters prepare, things seem to be building to go wrong. Then the mid-way twist is that nothing goes wrong. There is only one winner of the contest, and the rest of the movie is about how losing can impact oneself, and how different people deal with failure. But instead we got...this.
That Lonely Giraffe inc. welll...... people bought anohana Menma figurines so I guess some people do. Also, I think that the ending could have a beautiful ending like that tiny bit of Hope or understanding that would put people into tears(but in a way that isn’t soul crushing). Ritz Crackerz The one thing I really don't like about the Sing characters, and Illuminations style in general is that they never seem to have a good concept of exaggeration balancing realism. They make their characters realistic enough that stylized parts look out of place. The pig noses in Sing look flat because the rest of the body looks human and some animals just look disproportionate. I agree that the animation itself is pretty smooth, but with technology as it is, it's not as hard to animate.
The meme movie is coming, you know it is someone like Sony will think "what are the kids into these days, that's right they love their memes" and we can all cringe while they animate damn Daniel and pepe
Yeah, despicable me is a fine one-of movie. If anything, the second was harmless but making "Minions" and the Despicable Me 2 was kinda not needed other than a cash grab for the popularity of Despicable Me, which I cant blame them for as its easy money. Sing wasnt a *terrible* movie, some of the designs arent that bad and i could definitely tell what personality some of them had just by their look, like the Mouse and the Porcupines. Here's a question... Why was this animated? This is the only animated film I've ever seen that had no visual or story telling reason to be animated. At all.
The reason we get upset at "harmless" movies like this, is that the mere existence and continued success of low-budget HUGE gain movies encourages the rest of the market to do the same. Why spend 200 million on a movie that'll make about 400 - 500 million, when you could spend 60-70 million and make the same amount of money? It's low-risk high reward, and as long as they continuously pump out the same formula for making money, other companies may begin to question if they should really be spending so much on producing a movie. Then, eventually, almost all the movies will be a dull and garbage.
Counter point: A24's whole business model is based on this low risk huge gain model and we get some bangers from them. Cost isnt the issue either way to be honest. I'm sure I'll piss someone off but Disney is just as guilty with the last few years of Marvel movies. It's just mediocre nonsense that somehow gets butts into seats.

Rango has the creepiest character designs of any movie that I absolutely love. I have trouble adjusting to them every time I watch that film, but they totally work.

As a kid I never found it creepy. I always preferred semi realistic animal designs over a cartoony one. Rango is really creative for using the animal’s features as a design. Rattlesnake Jake has a gun for a rattle. There’s also a mouse that has long fur that they used as a beard. Really underrated work.
15:27 Wall-E is one of my favorite movies of all time and I have to talk about how genius the character design in that movie is. The still I timestamped illustrates Wall-E contrasted against a row of identical-looking humanoid blobs. Pixar's generally fantastic character design that allows everyone to leave a distinct impression on the audience is intentionally dropped to illustrate the fact that humans in this timeline have become nameless and virtually faceless copies of each other as we allowed technology to control more and more of our lives. That's why Wall-E is partially terrifying to me, a feeling I don't get with any other Pixar movie.
Illumination could never, ever pull something like this off because all their characters look bland and featureless anyway

Just the bit where they show Zootopia to compare it, the animation and graphical fidelity is infinitely more complex. Fur is rendered much better, lighting is amazing with proper shadow contrast and light ray effects, and most of all it doesn't have the brightly over-colored, yet "flat" look that Sing has.
you have a good point there. Plus the animation quality is generally better in Zootopia. The animation looks scarily like reality, at least in my opinion. I haven't seen Sing, and yet I can say that it doesn't really look like reality.

Despite what everybody says, I legitimately really like the first despicable me. This was before illumination figured that they didn’t have to try to make a profit so they made an actually good movie.

For the most part, I generally hear others say the same thing. It's an okay movie, maybe even kinda good! Heck, even the character design of the main characters was passable (going off of the main character and the scientist character).
But I think a lot of people grew to hate it in retrospect *purely* because it introduced the minions. That alone has dragged down the movie a ton... Such a shame...
Tbf to the creators of BoJack Horseman, they chose to have most of their characters be animals so they could explore darker themes whilst not getting too dark
I actually really like despicable me (THE FIRST ONE) bc the story was actually kind of unique, and I think focussing on themes of how an adopted family can struggle to grow together is really nice. The minions were annoying but definitely a secondary gag. Gru has a good character design, I could tell right away that he was a goofy Doofenshmirtz-esc villain. The girls are cute and different enough to be identifiable (the eldest responsible one, the tomboy, and the imaginative goofball). But oh lord, when that movie succeeded they literally took all the FAULTS of the movie and made them the PREMISE for the sequels!! and the worst part is it worked!!
That's exactly what I thought. D Me one was original. I liked the villain's transformation and the characters were well formed. The minions were just enough of a distraction to be fun.
D Me 2 was annoying, unneccessary, and gave the minions way too big of a role. It pushed it over into the irritating category and unwatchable for me.
I prefered Megamind as the villain animated story.

I always think of this movie as cheap Zootopia. While Zootopia was so colorful and creative in its world design to adjust to animal needs, Sing is just a normal world (demanding the question of 'why are they animals?') with a very flat color palette.

I think Sing could have worked if it had a plot that went something like this: the contest papers are sent out, and as the characters prepare, things seem to be building to go wrong. Then the mid-way twist is that nothing goes wrong. There is only one winner of the contest, and the rest of the movie is about how losing can impact oneself, and how different people deal with failure.
But instead we got...this.
Please send Illumination Entertainment in person a request to give Sing 2 that storyline so that it could turn out that way to improve the franchise!

Ritz Crackerz The one thing I really don't like about the Sing characters, and Illuminations style in general is that they never seem to have a good concept of exaggeration balancing realism. They make their characters realistic enough that stylized parts look out of place. The pig noses in Sing look flat because the rest of the body looks human and some animals just look disproportionate. I agree that the animation itself is pretty smooth, but with technology as it is, it's not as hard to animate.

Yeah, despicable me is a fine one-of movie. If anything, the second was harmless but making "Minions" and the Despicable Me 2 was kinda not needed other than a cash grab for the popularity of Despicable Me, which I cant blame them for as its easy money.
Sing wasnt a *terrible* movie, some of the designs arent that bad and i could definitely tell what personality some of them had just by their look, like the Mouse and the Porcupines. The story was still kinda lame, Im not one for musicals anyway and only really like a movie if they do it right (Nightmare Before Christmas).

The reason we get upset at "harmless" movies like this, is that the mere existence and continued success of low-budget HUGE gain movies encourages the rest of the market to do the same. Why spend 200 million on a movie that'll make about 400 - 500 million, when you could spend 60-70 million and make the same amount of money?
It's low-risk high reward, and as long as they continuously pump out the same formula for making money, other companies may begin to question if they should really be spending so much on producing a movie. Then, eventually, almost all the movies will be a dull and garbage.
Counter point: A24's whole business model is based on this low risk huge gain model and we get some bangers from them.
