Maybe back then. But he hasn't really been able to do that since '72. It's hard to keep up that kind of forced falsetto singing but we're fortunate he put it to record.

@@BayMacDre415 He even threw in the fact (unnecessarily I'd say) that people from Taiwan are not particularly well liked in communist Beijing and yet the Beijing crowd was still cheering for the Taiwanese guy.........this on top of the fact that he didn't have to say "and I was really really good". Obvious dig from an over polite Englishman who is a rock n roll icon. Context is everything......understand British culture and see how he calculatingly framed the event in a certain way that reflected poorly on the Beijing audience. He also threw in it was around when China was taking back Hongkong which creates a certain uneasy political atmosphere against the English Plant.

LOL! I've been to Taiwan many times, and my friends there got me up to a karaoke mic. The place only had one American song I recognized (Doors Light My Fire), so I sang it. My friends acted like it was awesome, but I think they really didn't like it. It's definitely not their style music. I'd bet many in that Karaoke bar where Plant sang knew little about Elvis. It's wild how in some countries we're so far apart in our practices/tastes. Here in America, many of us think other countries see the world through our eyes, when in many countries that's so far from the truth.

I'm sure it's true. I've "partaken" in many Korean, Chinese and Japanese Karaoke stages over the years .... never competing with anyone mind you like Robert apparently did. It's always been nothing short of a hoot. No matter how much you've indulged ... as long as you can sing as a Westerner .... you will be showered with gratitude, drinks and attraction from the women.

There was a Chinese Elvis impersonator in my apartment complex in Hong Kong, who was about the right age to have done a karaoke battle with Plant 20 years ago. For a second there, I thought my old neighbor was going to come out on stage.

I love Robert, but Mick Jagger has the best voice, to me. Brown Sugar to Moonlight Mile, same album, Sticky Fingers, I think. Funny, lotsa people say Mick can't sing, but lotsa people are wrong, he's the best. Steve Winwood is close to the best, listen to Blind Faith Had to Cry Today, live, and you'll see Eric Clapton (now there's a guy who can't sing!) struggling with not being the center of attention and you'll hear Steve's powerful voice carry this great song! Paul Rogers is also a great singer. So is Van Morrison.
This band are legends for Immigrant Song alone. That guitar riff is so amazing and it only uses 1 note and its higher octave, yet it makes you want to fight and pumpes you up so much
