    I'm a realistic oil painter and I LOVE listening to your videos. I've watched 25 or so now. I paint while I listen and it's very inspiring. I also have more appreciation for abstract just listening to you talk about it. You are making an impact on me as an artist, so thank you David!

    Dear David, thank you. I always wanted to paint unfortunately I never could pursue my desire. Family responsibilities always were given priority. It has taken 25 long years to come face to face with a blank canvas. And yes I do observe tutorials and paint as I am quite lost. But I noticed mine always turned out to be different from the tutorials. Maybe because I couldn't see their vision. I love the way you explain everything. I wish I could learn something and be a free painter without any fear or hesitation from within.

      Namrata Sharma, the more you paint, the more confident you will become. That confidence will allow you to overcome your fear and paint from your heart. Learn design fundamentals, that will build the foundation for your art making.

    your talk , defines the true purpose of art. I'm a hobbyist, a copier.. still learning basics of painting. maybe soon I will do spontaneous work. Thanks for such honest inspiration

    • @davidm.kesslerfineart1717
      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sujanith tottempudi it's not that you have to paint spontaneously, you just need to separate yourself from the subject matter. Develop a composition using a subject matter reference but then change it so that the composition is sound. Then get rid of the photo and develop a value study from the composition you designed. Paint from that value study.

      @@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Thank you. I am looking at your paintings finished with black on edges. Do you have tips for how to decide what colour to use to finish the edges? I have 3 paintings I need to finish, they are soft themes, not sure black will suit them. What else would be suitable?

    • @davidm.kesslerfineart1717
      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShoshanahShear I paint edges on all my paintings black that way when they are in an exhibit, they all go together. My advice is to choose a color to use for all your paintings. Maybe a medium gray or dark gray. When they are all painted the same it shows consistency in presentation and thought.

    • @ShoshanahShear
      @ShoshanahShear ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 I remember you saying about consistency in paintings in a different video. It makes sense, I am just undecided about colour. I am a little nervous to test a colour as if it does not go I am stuck with the wrong border. Wish I had a good colour swatch or wheel to put against the paintings to help me decide. On the positive note, at least I am figuring this out before doing too many canvases. Most of my art before I did these canvases were drawings or paintings on silk.
      Does it have to be in the black to gray range? How about a purple, blue or green, or maybe something different like bronze or silver

      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  ปีที่แล้ว

      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sonia Finch it’s good to paint from observation - it teaches you a lot about drawing, shapes, etc. when you are beginning. You need to find a way to make it your own so it is more than merely copying what you see.

    i totally agree 100% with that quote for any artist....but do you think a beginner painter should have the same approach before learning any of the basic fundamentals?

    • @davidm.kesslerfineart1717
      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Shedz Channel, I think you have to be able to draw from life as a beginning artist. Drawing is the basis of all art. I also think that you have to be taught a firm foundation in design fundamentals. As part of the design fundamentals instruction students should be taught not to copy photographs. Unfortunately, many instructors don't teach students how to design compositions - instead they are told to copy photographs. Once students have that as a base of knowledge it is very difficult to retrain yourself to design something rather than copy it. Photographs used for reference are fine, as long as you know how to design a composition.

    My small town in Shenandoah valley Virginia... Paintings of Grey barns, cows and blue ridge mountains everywhere. I am sick of them!!!! Every gallery has the same paintings by the same 20 artists, most of them local art teachers. They have the art scene tied up. Nobody wants my abstract art. I painted realistic watercolors for yearssssss and got SO boredddddd. I love abstract art and I love painting. Been in dozens of group shows and half a dozen solo shows on the west coast. No gallery in my town will give me a break out here on the east coast. I've given up applying. But I do keep on painting. I'm also a jazz pianist and have always believed anyone who doesn't like jazz doesn't like abstract art.

    Maybe you would be better saying "paint what you feel" because everybody knows Van Gogh said " i paint what i see" and i think we can interpret that has " i see past what is in front of me, this is how i see it".
