Beginning Artists-Don't Think About Style

If you're a beginning artist, don't think about a particular "style" to paint in. Learn the design fundamentals and begin to implement them in paintings - many paintings. Painting Light and Shadow Shapes
มุมมอง 2.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Painting in only two values - in this case the value of light and the value of shadow - gives you lots of practice in making good shapes for your paintings. Shapes are one of the main building blocks of painting design, and it takes lots of practice to get good at making them. I usually paint buildings for this type of exercise because I find good shapes in them. I go in depth on this topic in ...

5 Things All Beginning Painters Should Do
Where I get confused is when the wheel gets to analogous. For example the analogous colors are cad orange/Indian yellow/cad yellow/sap green but; the accent color is pointing to Viridian and the non dominant is pointing to cobalt violet. So will Viridian and cobalt also be included when using those analogous colors?
@@vanessavaldez8097 analogous colors are ONLY 3-5 colors adjacent to each other on the wheel. There is NO accent color. You have to determine which of the 3-5 colors you want to be dominant. FYI, the paint color names are only placed to help beginners understand which paint colors may equate to warm or cool reds, etc. I am not suggesting those are the colors to use. Just make the colors, yellow, yellow orange, orange and red orange. Keep it simple.
@ thank you so much!!! This cleared up everything thank you!
Hi David! Just looking at those colors takes me away to a tropical paradise! Thank you so much for the virtual vacation! It’s amazing how much color can affect my mood! Such a contrast to the brown and gray outside in Alabama right now!

This is great, thank you! Do these compositions work on vertical canvases, or wide horizontal canvases? What is the difference between Group mass and unbalanced?
@@allysmith1594 these are basic composition ideas that work no matter the canvas size, direction or scale. The two compositions are similar, but unbalanced should have a smaller component visually placed opposite the larger component.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Thank you for the quick response!
Thank you so much, I'm not usually the guy to comment but ive been struggling a lot with that false sense of inferiority by comparing myself to other artists for weeks now. It genuinely made me anxious to even go on social media so i can show my stuff. I know I'm being unfair to myself however and i really really needed to hear all this bc i gotta stop thinking I need to imitate others to be liked. Thanks for the encouragement <3
@@zonydragon1141 I think everyone goes thru that at some point as an artist - and social media is usually has a part to play. You’ve got to just be you - what comes out of you is unique to you - you can’t manufacture something that isn’t you. Do you, that’s all you can do - and its enough.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Thank you ❤

Can I use plywood or such from hardware store
@@roguereemerged you could try it, but I would do it with blank paper to see if it will work. The problem with plywood is its filled with chemicals like formaldehyde- which will probably negatively impact the paper. You could try priming the plywood first with poly or something else, let it dry, then try adhering the paper. My guess is it will adhere fine, but long term the chemicals in the plywood will degrade the painting.
This is very very usefull... Thanks

phthalo green PG7 can have a high level of PCBs due to imported pigment made in underregulated places. PCBs are odorless and carcinogenic. They get into air. Acrylic paint can also have formaldehyde, and inhalation carcinogen. Cobalt is not toxic in some pigment forms. The cobalt is so tightly bound to the molecule that it's basically harmless to paint with. An example is cobalt teal, PG50. Some cobalt pigments are soluble, though. That's when you have to be careful with them. Examples of soluble cobalt pigments are: cobalt green PG 19, cobalt violet PV 14 or 49, cobalt cyan PB 35, and cobalt yellow PY 40. Even these aren't "highly" toxic. Highly toxic pigments are those with arsenic and lead (especially soluble lead like lead white). Arsenic-based emerald green is the worst of all because its arsenic volatilizes, because it reacts with hydrogen sulfide in the air.
If you put diluted screened acrylic water down the drain wont it eventually dry in suspension into something toxic?
can I use the white glue as an alternative for the gel medium ?
@@عمرالخضيري-ع4ل I don’t know how the glue will react with the other materials. Gel medium is made specifically to use with water based painting materials.

So good to do this David, also love to see you again. When you were posting the first and second video on this it was so weird, because I was experiencing the same. I was challenged by a colleague who bought two canvases of 7x7 cm and gave that to me as a joke to paint something on them for her and her family. Mostly I paint on 80x 60 or 80x80 cm, but they don’t have enough space to hang these on the wall.
