      Hey my man.....absolutely the best movie breakdown video I have ever seen. You really just took an incredibly difficult movie to understand and dissected it perfectly. The fact that you were able to not only break this movie down, but also point out some things that were extremely subtle, was what really appealed to me. I really enjoyed watching this movie the first time and I have watched it since one other time, however, now I will have to see it again after watching this breakdown. Outstanding job.

      You’re wrong.. that’s not Peters soul leaving his body. That’s Annie’s headless body flying to the tree house. Paimon is a demon and only can possess the living. That’s why once Annie’s brother killed himself Leigh had to move on to Annie’s children because Paimon cannot possess the dead.

You hear her grabbing her keys and going out to the car and you're just waiting, waiting, and waiting for her reaction and then you hear it. Chills.

      People concentrate so much on Toni Collette, they seem to foregt about Alex Wolf, the son in the film. He was my favorite actor in the film along with Collette. I think he did a really good job, subtle but powerful. Especially in the scenes in the classroom when he bangs his head on the table, and when his Mum chases him through the house till he regresses, begging his 'mommy' to help him.

      @Re Up Yes, Peter was portrayed as a real teenager. He wasn't over the top angst. He actually cared about his sister but was going through that teenage phase of wanting his space. Even at the party, he did not mistreat her and no one at the party did either. It was a refreshing take. I think all of the actors did an excellent job.

    • @uckermanf
      @uckermanf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      @Re Up I agree. I was far more struck by Peter's character and that performance than Annie. It was heartbreaking to watch. He deserved some serious kudos for his performance, and it could not have been easy to play this role so convincingly.

      I like how they portrayed him as so protective of his son, and him breaking down only when he was alone. Usually the fathers in films are portrayed as dumb, distracted or downright uncaring

    • @davokelly7876
      @davokelly7876 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I thought you meant and maybe you did or didn't but a reference to THE FATHER as in God trying to be there for them super supportive but is in torment with the way the people and children ( his creations) are falling apart....I know it's not a spot on analogy but it's what sprang to mind 🤷🏼‍♂️
      Also the actor who played peter is renowned for once he gets in to character he does not break it for the duration of the films he does so and other actors and directors testifies to this and then once the jobs done he's back to himself....so I imagine that would be a freaky buzz and takes method acting to a whole other level 😲

    So my younger sister died in a car accident a few years back, I developed “secondary PTSD” and started having flashbacks to the accident I hadn’t been at, my mom whom I was living with went crazy and wound up spending two weeks in an inpatient ward, she cried so much for so many weeks that I started hallucinating sobbing noises when she wasn’t around (including when I spent two nights at a retreat house by myself), being the sibling your grief and pain is totally overshadowed by your parents’ loss (eg. at my wedding dozens of people talked to me about how hard it must be for my mom, not one person asked if it was hard for me), this movie is HANDS DOWN the most accurate depiction of what it all felt like. I cannot say it strongly enough. No amount of “realistic” Oscar-bait drama can compare to how incredibly validated and seen I felt watching Peter watch his mom floating in the air cutting her own head off.

I just adore this movie, and digging into it and talking about it, because I feel like it’s really the perfect example of how genre movies can reveal the inner experience in a way that something “realistic” just can’t. Grief is very weird and totally surreal, like the reality of your old life has just completely broken down, so to me it really takes a super surreal and bizarre horror movie to actually express it.

      Peter had to still be alive. If Paimon could go into dead bodies then he would have gone into Charles after he comitted suicide, or into the dad who starved himself to death. Annie subconciously tried to save her kids by killing them; so it makes sense that Paimon can't go into dead bodies. Peter was alive, but posessed.

    also really little details here, but when Annie was in Joannes apartment and she was explaining to her about her grief and loss, Joanne seems to completely ignore everything she said , and right after just says "how is your relationship with your son?"
    also when annie is about to leave her apartment and Joanne is giving Annie the things she needs to perform the seance , she says "everyone in your family needs to be there" and mentions Peter first before anyone " *your son*, you, everyone"

The door to her apartment was made of glass, which is really weird because a single woman living by herself in an apartment would NEVER have a flimsy glass door as her primary door to her residence. And for someone who had a son and a grandson, that apartment was way, way too small to raise a child in. It almost felt like a made-up apartment, which it was.

    Regarding Annie’s beheading: Since you covered the background noise of cultists moving through the house right before the family returns from the funeral, you might weant to review the scenes after Annie hanging out on the ceiling of Peter’s room. When Peter checks his parents’ bedroom, a piano can beard being slammed shut at 01:49:28. In the subtitles it’s called [loud bang]. When Peter walks down the stairs to the hall, the camera’s focus is initially set to the piano. It is shown broken with the keys’ piano wires sticking out. This is Annie’s work. She uses piano wire to decapitate herself later in the attic. Fun side note: the camera angle and expression on Annie’s face are an homage to THAT scene in Carrie (1976), Ari said in an interview [1].
    You say the shadow seen after Peter’s jump out of the attic window is his soul leaving his body. I thought so, too, initially, until someone in the Hereditary subreddit pointed out that it’s actually the shadow of now headless Annie floating towards the tree house. Listen again closely. About eight seconds after the thump of Annie’s decapitated head falling to the wooden floor of the attic can be heard, we see the shadow. Its starting position is the attic window from which Peter jumped straight forward, landing with his feet pointing towards it and his head away from it. It’s not 100 % distinguishable but the shadow has no head.
    In the ending scene Joan addresses Paimon in Peter’s body as Charlie because this is the name Paimon has become used to as being addressed over the course of thirteen years. Ari said in an interview [2] that Paimon replaced Charlie from the moment she’s born. The thing is, he doesn’t know he’s a King of Hell trapped in the body of a human child. He might have an idea of it, as the bird crashing into the window in Charlie’s class scene suggests, but he’s not fully aware of it. You have to tell him who he is. That’s why Joan does it.
    We never get to experience the real Charlie. The only possible exception to this is the séance held in the Graham living room. At one point Annie speaks with a child’s voice. The screenplay [3] says on numbered page 78 “But her voice sounds different. It will now remind us - in inflection, in quality - of CHARLIE’S VOICE.”. We don’t know if this is Paimon playing a trick on Annie, Peter, and Steve, or if it’s the voice of the real Charlie whose soul might have been drifting through the æther since it was evicted from her body at birth. Of course this requires the séance to work like an actual séance works. The one in Joan’s home was fake, and the chalk’s movement either done by Paimon or some appliance.

      So many of these demons are ancient gods, and Paimon may have been a middle-eastern goddess.
      Gods or demons, they are generally depicted with human feelings, isn’t it said that Yawhe loves, or that Satan is jealous?

    I've been a horror aficionado for almost twenty years now. I really thought I was incapable of being scared anymore, but I'm not going to lie, when I spotted Toni Collette in the corner of the room toward the end, I felt a fear I hadn't felt since my childhood. The creepy naked dude shortly after was almost as bad. Hats off to Ari Aster. I know this film is pretty widely appreciated, but I truly think it's the scariest film of the century so far.

    • @deanwhite7970
      @deanwhite7970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That was my scariest moment too. It's interesting and cool that these figures don't harm anyone. They're just seen at the side of the frame. Look away or pay too close attention to the center and you'll miss them. It's like Hitchcock's bomb under the table. When the bomb goes off that's scary and then the moment's gone. Hitchcock and Aster build suspense and dread as we see the figures and then worry about what the heck they're doing there. It's also against what John Carpenter invented: person is looking into the fridge. He closes the door and there suddenly is Michael or Jason or whoever. Sure it's startling for a moment but there's really no sense of anticipation. He just pops up at really inconvenient times.

      The shots of Annie up against the wall and scurrying down are sooo scary. I literally missed it when I saw it in the theatre. I rented it after and freaked out when I saw it. I was shocked I missed it. When she is cutting her head off, her eyes - her terrified glazed expression and the SOUND of sawing. Then off camera, the THUD of her head falling...sheer terror. Brilliant film. I was surprised and delighted when I was completely creeped out by scenes in The Witch. I previously thought ehhh nothing scares me anymore at age 58. Well...yes this film scared the sh*t out of me and I loved it. Screwed up family, psychological terror, anger, resentment and guilt, grief...and a demon. BONUS FOR BEHEADINGS. Great combo!!

Watching this in the theaters gave me that PHYSICAL reaction that I have never had before. I've had something close to it when I saw The Exorcist as a child. Even The Conjuring scared me a lot, but HEREDITARY actually gave me a slight panic, anxiety moment! I think it started during the Dinner Argument scene...it struck a nerve in me. It felt so REAL. I have never seen an argument displayed in a movie like the ones I've had in my life. Then as the movie progressed, I was feeling the sounds/low frequencies and I didn't know what was happening. It kicked into high-gear during the final showdown scenes in the house, my heart was racing so fast, my arm was losing sensation, I wanted to GTFO of the showing, but I couldn't. A small detail I noticed, Charlies room in the house is shaped just like the treehouse with the sky light. But in the house it's usually depicted in a cold blue tone where as the treehouse has the red light radiated from the heaters, Could be a death and life thing there idk

    At 7:00 when we see the scene with the blue paint being knocked over. I actually hadn't noticed that her hand never actually touched the bottle, because it is done so subtle, and our eyes make us believe Annie did it, much in the same way that she herself, believes that she did it. This is why Ari Aster is such a great filmmaker. Little details like this, show that he does not care one bit, rather we immediately see things for ourselves, or not. He is more interested in his world being real, believable, and weighted, and it gives us something to experience on our own time, with our own mind set and senses. It's bold, and shows incredibly control, and consideration for our intelligence. Lesser films and filmmakers would have used close ups and music ques and anything else, to make sure we didn't leave the scene until we all knew, together, unmistakably, that an invisible force tipped over the bottle.

    i actually noticed two hidden details after watching this movie yesterday with my friend! when annie is working on a miniature (sorry, i dont remember which) you can see in the window behind her that there are two hands pressed on the glass. another one is when the girl peter has a crush on leads him to the room to smoke weed, the two boys that are already in there are watching a video of someone's head being chopped off via guillotine. that last one is the one that really made me go "oh shit, theyre ALL in on it huh" since it was my second watching haha

  • @kitchristopher7
    @kitchristopher7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    another cool detail was when Peter was entering the room upstairs at the party, the people in the room were watching someone being beheaded on a guillotine on an iPad, which is foreshadowing Charlie’s beheading later on

    Hereditary HAS to be my favourite modern day horror film. The director's decision to avoid jump scares and shock-jock moments, and, instead, rely on atmosphere and precision subtleties really made this movie the eerie and horrific story it was, and such a unique watching experience.
    I also very much enjoy being able to pick up on hints and subtleties I missed during my first viewing, which makes this movie perfect for multiple viewings... Yet at the same time I feel it would have had an even greater impact on me had I noticed all the small details the first time around. I can only imagine how much more this movie would have haunted and truly horrified me.
    To be honest, I don't think people can truly appreciate the movie without an understanding of Paimon and how 'he' was implented all throughout the plot, and I think anyone who claims to have disliked it should rewatch it, first after learning about the clues and the hidden gems that make the movie whole.

    10:56 that's definitely the shadow of Annie's headless body leaving the attic and levitating towards the tree house. The next shot in the actual movie shows that. That being said, incredible movie!

    After Annie wakes up from the nightmare and checks on Peter, he says that he had a nightmare too. Also the road with the engraved telephone pole was the only road leading to the family’s house.
    I remember that throughout the movie, my initial theory (one of them anyway) was that Charlie’s ghost was trying to get revenge on Peter. I though this bc of the scenes where Peter slammed his head into the desk like Charlie’s head slammed into the telephone pole, and when Peter started choking like when Charlie’s throat closed up bc of her allergies.

    It wasn't the shadow of his soul leaving his body, it was the shadow of Annie's decapitated body floating out the window and over to the treehouse, which we see later. Peter wasn't dead, just sufficiently traumatized and hurt to become vulnerable enough for possession. Annie became vulnerable enough after the trauma of seeing Steve die. And we know Charles escaped possession by committing suicide so Peter couldn't be completely dead.

    The end ceremony in the tree house was so strange for me because it is a place of youthful play and adventure and the innocence of youth. So watching something so hideous and vile in a wooden confined space was hard to describe. It added to the horror being played out before my eyes and made it feel intimate and clean all at the same time and also a very organic and natural feeling accompanied by something so dark and evil was an amazing touch. Bohemian Grove gives that sense a bit with the Forrest and owl’s etc
