I have had my DF54 for about 7 weeks (total beginner with BrevDB) and loving every cup (except some really overroasted decaf I should probably toss). Landed it was ~CA$330. I probably won't do this mod unless I could somehow taste the difference prior to the mod time and $ outlay. I would rather spend the cash on excellent beans. My brews have spoiled me for 99% of the coffee shops around so I would definitely buy the DF54 again! It also does not take up a lot of space. Static seems low but live on the Canadian Wet Coast. Love your vids lance.

Just one thing please start with full disclosure at the start of the mod. Thank you for the comment "the window for dialing in is much smaller than the cone burrs". This is a very, very, very important thing to me. Less wasted coffee is a thing I enjoy. I tend to prefer roasts on the darker side of medium concerning specialty coffee (think Onyx eclipse and darker). I got a drinkable shot from 20-40 seconds on the ESP before I gave it up when moving back to the EU. I don't think this one is for me. I basically want a more refined ESP with more settings in a dedicated single dose platform. I think I know what I need I just don't want to spend the 800 euros with import and taxes. I totally get that this is great for a lot of people and am glad it exists though! Thank you for the informative and enjoyable video, as always.
I think once the population of DF54 in the wild reaches tipping point there will be lots of burr options but tbh I love the coffee produced by mine and changing would be more for the fun of experimenting rather than "better" coffee
@ I may get one as just espresso grinder. I have many other grinders but they are all doing double duty for filter Nd espresso and multiple coffees frequently.
When this grinder came out, i instantly knew it was the future, so i decided to wait for the moment when SSP would recognize this and start production of 54mm burrs. Im not sure where SSP stands on this now, but im surprised it hasnt happened yet.
1:14 that's the wrong niche for anyone wondering it was the Niche Zero that was conical he's talking about but this is the successor, the Niche Duo with flat 83mm burrs shown in the video.

I ended up with the exact same workflow a few months ago (bought DF54 at release) after trying the dosing cup and grinding direct to portafilter. Grinding into the blind shaker is by far the smoothest workflow, and it eliminates the static from the plastic cup.
You mentioned that the niche has a very forgiving sweet spot, and that's exactly why I love mine. I can swap back and forth between my favorite coffee and my favorite decaf and not have to adjust the grind. Super glad to see this video, though, I was just being asked about cheap grinders at work.
I bought this grinder on a whim. Was on verge of getting Baratza encore ESP but really dont like its aesthetic. It was the middle of the night and I was thinking about grinders again and searching reddit. Someone mentioned DF54 was coming and I just googled it as I hadn't heard of it before. The Singapore distributor was only site listing it for pre release, so I just thought I'll order it, so I can sleep. I then woke up with a whole lot of doubt and even tried to cancel my order as I was sure i was getting scammed haha. Thankfully it arrived quickly and the rest, as they say is history. I'm usually such a research/comparison person but this time I just took a chance and I'm glad to see it's getting a lot of love all round as its my first grinder. My last "grinder" was a nutri bullet! 😂 Smashed the living crap out of them beans.
I've been looking at this grinder for a wee while now, currently using a Sage Smart Grinder Pro, It's been solid enough but I'm not getting enough flavour from beans I'm using.. Appreciate the video Mr Silky Milky man (Lolz) 😂Big thumbs up from scotland dude 👍 😁
DF54 Delivered for 144£. Happy to be setting aside my old Ascaso conical burr stepless grinder that drifted constantly finer as it tried to kick off the hopper and shoot beans across the floor. Not going to be modifying mine. Boringly dependable is good for me.
Honestly, I clicked on this video because you lost some weight and wanted to see If you last more weight😊, which you did. This is super inspiring! Keep up the good work! Love your video's greatings from the Netherlands
That's a really interesting mod, reversing the motor like that. Is there enough room inside to put in, say, a 2pole2throw switch, so you can swap directions with the flip of a switch?
This looks excellent. I feel like this will be a mod I'll do eventually, this should be a nice upgrade rather than lusting after a new grinder. I think I'll wait until there's an update for the ionizer before I take the plunge
Almost bought a DF54 when they first came out, but I was concerned the grind speed was too slow (the main reason I got rid of my last grinder). Ended up buying the DF64 Gen2. No regrets. Having said that, if I wasn't impatient, this seems like a great grinder for the price.
I replaced original plastic cup with Ikape blind shaker. Far better than Mhw-3bomber because top of the shaker has curved edges that fit better on the rubber holder
I have a df54 and the only time it has struggled is with Sawada beans from chicago: extremely dark roast, super oily, and with winter there's low humidity in the air casuing it to clump and effectively choking my grinder. Outside of that it has been a great experience as a daily driver for one espresso a day
I'm guessing they'll eventually release a DF54 Gen 2 which will come with a button to reverse motor direction and option to select stock, ditting steel, or ceramic burrs on purchase.
I had two Baratza grinders, Sette 270 and then Sette 270wi. Both failed catastrophically after about 2 years of usage, each, because they have cheap plastic internal construction. I finally bought Ceado e37s. It works like a charm and so far is cheaper to own than the "cheap" Baratza grinders which you need to replace every couple of years. Sometimes, just sometimes, it is actually cheaper to buy quality item and not have to replace it for a long time.
Got a DF83V on the way - was intrigued from your mini overview of it in that lineup video you did. Didn't bother with SSP burrs for now but ive read good things about the DLC stick burrs they use.
Well I think you’ve convinced me to get some Dittings for my DF54. How many shims did you end up putting in Lance? I don’t mind doing some rewiring, but after trying to hyper-align my Ode 2 I’m hesitant about anything related to shimming 😅
Hello sir Lance. Very comprehensive and helpful review as always. As stock form, flavor wise, without considering that there are more upgradability options for DF 64 gen 2, would you say holding out and saving 150-200$ more to get DF64 Gen 2 instead of the DF54 would be worth it?
@LanceHedrick any chance you could demo/explain the wiring change again? Maybe step by step, Hoon couldn’t figure it out on his live stream so was not able to show us to make it clearer. Thanks!
Recently got a Df64 and feel like the 54 would have been perfectly fine. Not going to bother changing, but it's fantastic there are so many options available now!
@ShayanGivehchian exactly - I've found the stock burrs perfectly good, and if the df54 tastes similar, the stock burrs are already very good. I find them quite balanced - more sweet and acid than my hand grinder (feld 47), much more clarity. Not doubting better options are out there, but I am loving the stock burrs and very happy with my purchase. Even came with a brush to help keep the chute clean lol
Does this mean other 54mm burrs will fit if the polarity is reversed? I have the DF54 with standard and tbh I love it as it is but the "Mad Professor" in me would buy another one and reverse it for burr a swapping extravaganza.
Hey Lance! Love your videos and what you do. Incredible amount of passion. I am about to purchase a Decent Espresso machine. I thought I wanted the mechanical type, for the feel, but after watching your very informative videos I’ve learned it’s the only way to truly be in control of all aspects involved. One thing I hadn’t thought about was how much amperage these machines use. I had no clue it would be such an issue. How am I supposed to run a machine like that on a normal 15a outlet? Not to mention a grinder alongside. How do I do it safely? How do people run a machine like this in an apartment? I spoke directly with Decent, and they said it would be fine on a regular 15amp outlet (they did recommend it be a 20amp outlet though). Do you think I’ll be okay with a regular 15 outlet, or do I have to have an electrician come out to run 12 gauge wire for a 220/240v outlet with its’ own circuit breaker? Lastly, if I’m going to go the route like Decent, would you get theirs or another similar one? Would you wait for the Bengle to come out instead? Any would be extremely appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻. Keep killing it, brother 🤙🏻🤙🏻
I'm sure I won't taste the difference compared to my Starseeker conical, and I don't drink light roasts, but I like the look of this thing. More substantial, gives it some purpose on the counter. Maybe when I move back to Portugal I'll come and steal yours. ;)
Thanks for the video! How much of a gap in flavor you expect from stock DF54 to the Philos? I have one on order but maybe should just play with the 54 instead given the reviews
this grinder is my first expresso grinder, to pair with my first expresso machine, the bambino/ I've had no issues with it, using it every day for 5 months.
I've seen you have been using the timemore pro kettle lately. What is your opinion on it? Will there be a review or even a comparision between kettles in the near time?
The increased retention, loss of de-ionizer, and loss of warranty will probably keep me from making the mod. Hopefully SSP will produce a 54mm option soon!
@@ahpadt I completely agree and I love the 54mm Ditting steels! I used them for a couple years as a multipurpose set and I actually prefer them to the SSP MP as I find them much more forgiving for espresso. They are a truly outstanding multipurpose burr set! I only say hopefully SSP makes a set as I highly doubt Ditting will custom make a set for the DF54, but SSP might if the demand is there.
Thanks, for your thoughts on the 54 Lance! I have a moded LP+ super jolly, maybe it will get ssps some day. Btw have you measured the offset between your LPs GH and brew temp?
I have a DF83 that I 3D printed a new larger chute of someone else's design in which they relocated the ioniser electrodes from the left side of the chute to the right side. What I've noticed is they stay significantly cleaner on the right side, probably because the grounds enter towards the left side of the chute (the burrs spinning clockwise) therefore not hitting and sticking to the electrodes. This has been better for static. So I'm curious, if the DF54 design is the same, would switching the motor to counter-clockwise help with static at all or at least the electrode build-up?
It spins in the same direction as the planets and galaxies in the universe, which slightly reduces the temperature leading to more unimodal grind distribution and clearer flavour notes.
Hey Lance! I have a used Vario with the ditting burrs based on your Vario video. you said that you would release the alcron alignment video then, but never did unfortunately. Think you could ever release/make that video? Thank you!
Lance, great video. Question, How do you think this 54 with burr swaps would compare to a DF64 with SSP MP? I've got a set of MPs which I could use if I acquire a DF64 gen 2 for ~$350-400 and swap in the MP's, or get a 54 and dittings for ~$300. What would be gained in your opinion? This would be mainly for espresso as I have other grinders for pourover.
Argh, I got the notification and jumped to the video hoping it’s the review for the Mazzer Philos 😅 No sweat, this will do as well 😄 How would the DF54 rank in your grinder tier list? (if it was mentioned, apologies but I missed it)

How does the DF54 with ditting burrs compare to Timemore 064S?
Nice review but sick beatbox BurrMan!
Maybe when I move back to Portugal I'll come and steal yours. ;)
Just bought the df 54 a few weeks ago. Pretty great results, but curious where you typically start for a range for filter or espresso.
Thanks for the video! How much of a gap in flavor you expect from stock DF54 to the Philos?
I have one on order but maybe should just play with the 54 instead given the reviews
How would you say the grind quality and range is conpared to a 1zpresso like a jmax?
this grinder is my first expresso grinder, to pair with my first expresso machine, the bambino/ I've had no issues with it, using it every day for 5 months.
I have a breville touch impress. Would this be much of an upgrade for milk drinkers only?
I've seen you have been using the timemore pro kettle lately. What is your opinion on it? Will there be a review or even a comparision between kettles in the near time?
I think the reverse motor mode can go even further with a DPDT SWITCH to make the switch easier to standard mode to reverse mode...
Just had a thought at your B-Roll of the Niche Duo… we need Sheldon to make a carrier set for the 80mm burrs.
Skip to surprise mod! Skip to surprise mod!
The increased retention, loss of de-ionizer, and loss of warranty will probably keep me from making the mod.
Hopefully SSP will produce a 54mm option soon!
It would be nice if SOMEONE did!
You dont need ssp when you have these ditting burrs. The steelies have as much clarity as 64mp but with better body.
@@ahpadt you do if you don’t feel comfortable rewiring a $300 appliance. And the vast majority of users won’t.
Lance Hedrick: The Specialty Coffee Human Beat Boxin' Machine!!! 😊😊😊
I appreciate your work lance . Could you please explain the advantages of burr turning in a counter-clockwise direction?
It spins in the same direction as the planets and galaxies in the universe, which slightly reduces the temperature leading to more unimodal grind distribution and clearer flavour notes.
Hey Lance! I have a used Vario with the ditting burrs based on your Vario video. you said that you would release the alcron alignment video then, but never did unfortunately. Think you could ever release/make that video? Thank you!
COFFEE GOLDEN AGE BABY.
(if it was mentioned, apologies but I missed it)
In taste wise are these burrs more like ssp cast or ssp mp?
