I'm super excited about these new, budget options! For the normal everyday coffee drinker, It's easier to swallow $200 for a good grinder to make better coffee than $700 or more!
Chris Baca did a repair video on the OG Encore a couple of years ago, and IIRC he heard from Baratza that they made that burr holder in plastic so it breaks easily when a stone gets in there, in order to save the burrs. Makes sense, as almost every spare part of Baratza is available for home-repair, that's a big part of their company policy as you also pointed out in the video.
My OG encore had a sudden drop in grind quality. Looked up some videos and while I had it apart to fix it I was able to upgrade my burr to the new one. Pretty awesome how supportive they are and how they make it possible to only fix but to upgrade their machines.

The fact that Baratza as a company has made longevity and repairability into the cornerstone of their business model makes me so happy. To get that from any company these days is rare, but even more so from a company known in the industry for making lower-end (I speak relatively here of course), affordable products. It's refreshing and I'm sure has earned them a lot of loyalty over the years. I know it has from me.

I'm pretty sure that the burrs in the ESP are the m2 burrs from the virtuoso, which can also be purchased as an upgrade kit for existing encore owners. Just in case anyone wants the better taste profile without spending $200!
The part number is different on Baratzas parts manuals, but I think it may just be an unthreaded Virtuoso burr. It is listed as an M2 burr on the parts list

The adjustment ring is a really great design. Not to mention the baratza customer service. Have repaired a number of broken baratza after years of good service.
That a felt washer. Same on Breville barista express built in grinder. Very easy to brake. Somebody told me it’s more for vibrations. I have replace it with rubber washer and works perfect.

I've been making espresso out of an Encore for years now despite internet haters saying it can't be done. It's a fantastic machine for the money, and I'm glad they finally got a version that's designed with Espresso in mind. It's not a perfect machine by any means, but it's an excellent machine for most people. Baratza is also an awesome company, and you won't get better support for the money. Also big-up lance for the grind-button remix, I'm glad someone has found a use for that thing.
I was using my baratza encore somewhat successfully for espresso for a few months, I found the biggest drawbacks for espresso for me were that sometimes I would need to be in between clicks and that I couldn't get fine enough for some beans ( i think this one could be fixed with some modding) this new encore fixes those two issues. The Issue that was a dealbreaker for me was that it had too much retention for me with espresso grind and that made switching between pourover and espresso really unpleasant. I think that is still going to be an issue with this if someone is hoping for a grinder to do both it will only work if you are happy cleaning out your machine every time you want pourover after making espresso.
@@ebbbrock You can modify the grinder and remove the piece that clicks to make the Encore have stepless adjustment. If you're going back and fourth between Espresso and Pourover though you might just want to get a new grinder for Espresso and use the Encore for drip.

In USA maybe. In the EU I am having trouble find a freaking burr ring for a year now ($8 in the US) and I can't buy it unless I pay through the nose for shipping ($120 CAD in one instance). My next burr will definitely not be a Baratza. Their support outside of USA sucks big time.
Good review. The original Encore was NOT recommended for espresso so that capability with the new model is a big deal. Baratza really bends over backwards to support their product. A friend gave me a broken encore with a bad control board so I called Baratza in Seattle and they sent me a new one no charge, no questions asked! Don’t know how anyone feels about mega appliance company Breville but they recently purchased Baratza and I don’t know how long they will continue with their generous free parts and service. Nonetheless it’s great to see they’re continuing to innovate.

What’s the difference between this and the original encore upgraded with the M2 burr and calibrated to grind finer (that you can do by taking the cover off and changing a screw position on the burr collar). Awesome in depth review. I always liked the plastic around the burrs because the tabs would break if a rock or hard object went into your grinder. It was an easy part to replace and cheap.
I have introduced my partner to home espresso; the Encore ESP was already my likely choice to suggest, as she has and trusts an Encore, but this has sealed it for me. Cheers!
I got my first grinder last year- a second-hand Baratza Virtuoso Plus, it feels like the original "Encore but better" based on my experience of the V+ and what people say about the Encore and Encore ESP. I didn't realise just how similar the Encore ESP was to the V+ though, the internals are instantly recognisable, even down to the red tab to help you seat the collar burr. I've loved the filter coffee out of the V+ and I'm really getting the hang of espresso with it now and the shots are coming out better and better all the time. It makes me want to stay in Baratza's ecosystem moving forward. Thinking of getting a Vario+ at some point in the future, when I have the budget for it.

Watched their stream on Prima yesterday. That grind adjustment mechanism seemed really interesting to me, so I’m glad to see it broken down. Was between this and the new Fellow, but this one looks like it’s the better investment.

I think it can hold its weight against sd40. I think you might lose a little bit with it, but that's arguable! negligible. I'd recommend selling the two and downsizing, if that is what you'd want to do

Between this and the Fellow, it feels like the Baratza is a better choice as I explore espresso more. Super excited for when I can purchase this and no longer have to hand grind. This is great news! I currently own the regular Baratza Encore and I found I drink lattes 95% of the time, so I think I'll have to pick this one up and sell my old one.
Hello Lance. The white felt gasket that you broke is meant to prevent coffee fines from entering the gears below. This grinders have a small motor and need some gears to generate more torque and lower the rpms. I used to repair alot of Saeco and Jura superautomatic machines and they all have it. Try to get a new gasket. Hello from Mexico city

Hi Lance, just wanted to mention that the Encore ESP comes with the M2 burrs that we all know and love from the virtuosos (and all the upgraded Encores). One weird thing to mention is that baratza no longer offers the M2 burrs on their website.

I modified my Encore with the M2 burr and the Preciso adjustment ring. Ignoring the plastic and the lack of a timer switch, it’s fungible with the Preciso. I haven’t used the new Encore ESP, but I feel like making the official version of my modded Encore would have been better for home espresso. This looks like the “double pin” mod people have been doing for a while. The stepless Preciso slider never left me wanting for more adjustment. That said, all the creature comforts they added look great.

A question from a coffee novice: I have an inexpensive espresso machine and for 10 years have had a Dualit Burr grinder, having been told I needed a Burr grinder. I do not have a refined coffee palate but I prefer espresso to other types. I have the grinder permanently set on the finest grind. If I bought a Baratza Encore ESP, would I notice the flavor differences offered by the different espresso grinds?

Okay, I wanted to give time before leaving any comments anywhere but, I watched several videos before deciding to buy this grinder and btl user comments would be useful for future potential buyers. It might just be me but, after 3 and a bit months, I'm really disappointed. First, the retention is shocking; often a gram or even 2 from an 18g dose. And really bad clumping too. Baratza recommend starting at setting 15 for espresso but clumping is bad even up to 18 or 19. I watched Lance's recent video about seasoning really hoping it would tell me this would get better but small. conical burrs here and no sign of improvement, probably not going to get better. I'm already thinking about changing. Anybody have a different experience? Or better, the same experience and manage to fix it?
That’s exactly my thoughts, got mine a few weeks ago, I have up to 3 gram retention when I using it for an espresso. And hell yes the clumps a crazy sometimes
If it launches with a few more color options, it will blow Fellow out of the water. It looks simple enough to appeal to the beginner market who are worried about having coffee takeover their kitchen.

Similar burs to the ZP6, in a grinder that is the same price as the ZP6. And it can actually do espresso! Very curious, indeed. I wish I could put these burs into my old Encore so I could compare it with the grinds I get from my ZP6.

You're not supposed to put stones in the grinder.

Awesome in depth review. I always liked the plastic around the burrs because the tabs would break if a rock or hard object went into your grinder. It was an easy part to replace and cheap.

I got my first grinder last year- a second-hand Baratza Virtuoso Plus, it feels like the original "Encore but better" based on my experience of the V+ and what people say about the Encore and Encore ESP. I didn't realise just how similar the Encore ESP was to the V+ though, the internals are instantly recognisable, even down to the red tab to help you seat the collar burr. I've loved the filter coffee out of the V+ and I'm really getting the hang of espresso with it now and the shots are coming out better and better all the time. It makes me want to stay in Baratza's ecosystem moving forward. Thinking of getting a Vario+ at some point in the future, when I have the budget for it.

Watched their stream on Prima yesterday. That grind adjustment mechanism seemed really interesting to me, so I’m glad to see it broken down. Was between this and the new Fellow, but this one looks like it’s the better investment.
I personally would take the longevity of baratza support and this dialing system.
@@LanceHedrick Forgive me if I missed it in the video, but how would you put this against the SD40? I’m currently using the SD40 for espresso and the original Encore for filter, but I’d love to get down to one machine. Is this a good replacement for those two?
I think it can hold its weight against sd40. I think you might lose a little bit with it, but that's arguable! negligible. I'd recommend selling the two and downsizing, if that is what you'd want to do

I am also wondering if I could or should buy the parts off Baratza’s website to upgrade my encore into an encore ESP and what parts I would need to buy to do that.

Just recently got an espresso machine after only filter coffee for years and I've been having a hard time finding an electric grinder that does both reasonably well. Between this and the Fellow, it feels like the Baratza is a better choice as I explore espresso more. Super excited for when I can purchase this and no longer have to hand grind. This is great news! I currently own the regular Baratza Encore and I found I drink lattes 95% of the time, so I think I'll have to pick this one up and sell my old one.

Hello Lance. The white felt gasket that you broke is meant to prevent coffee fines from entering the gears below. This grinders have a small motor and need some gears to generate more torque and lower the rpms. I used to repair alot of Saeco and Jura superautomatic machines and they all have it. Try to get a new gasket. Hello from Mexico city

I do not think so. It is built just like any other threading system. I think it should last just fine

Hi Lance, just wanted to mention that the Encore ESP comes with the M2 burrs that we all know and love from the virtuosos (and all the upgraded Encores).
One weird thing to mention is that baratza no longer offers the M2 burrs on their website.

For reducing retention with the single dose hopper, it isn't quite the same but bouncing the lid up and down does work a bit like a bellows

I modified my Encore with the M2 burr and the Preciso adjustment ring. Ignoring the plastic and the lack of a timer switch, it’s fungible with the Preciso. I haven’t used the new Encore ESP, but I feel like making the official version of my modded Encore would have been better for home espresso. This looks like the “double pin” mod people have been doing for a while. The stepless Preciso slider never left me wanting for more adjustment.
That said, all the creature comforts they added look great.

A question from a coffee novice: I have an inexpensive espresso machine and for 10 years have had a Dualit Burr grinder, having been told I needed a Burr grinder. I do not have a refined coffee palate but I prefer espresso to other types. I have the grinder permanently set on the finest grind. If I bought a Baratza Encore ESP, would I notice the flavor differences offered by the different espresso grinds?

Okay, I wanted to give time before leaving any comments anywhere but, I watched several videos before deciding to buy this grinder and btl user comments would be useful for future potential buyers. It might just be me but, after 3 and a bit months, I'm really disappointed. First, the retention is shocking; often a gram or even 2 from an 18g dose. And really bad clumping too. Baratza recommend starting at setting 15 for espresso but clumping is bad even up to 18 or 19. I watched Lance's recent video about seasoning really hoping it would tell me this would get better but small. conical burrs here and no sign of improvement, probably not going to get better. I'm already thinking about changing. Anybody have a different experience? Or better, the same experience and manage to fix it?
That’s exactly my thoughts, got mine a few weeks ago, I have up to 3 gram retention when I using it for an espresso. And hell yes the clumps a crazy sometimes

If it launches with a few more color options, it will blow Fellow out of the water. It looks simple enough to appeal to the beginner market who are worried about having coffee takeover their kitchen.

Similar burs to the ZP6, in a grinder that is the same price as the ZP6. And it can actually do espresso! Very curious, indeed. I wish I could put these burs into my old Encore so I could compare it with the grinds I get from my ZP6.
Very interesting indeed. I'm sure many would be willing to pay more for the Encore ESP if it had a switch to toggle between 110 and 550 RPM modes.

As these dual purpose electric grinders come down in price, it'd be interesting to compare to some of the high quality dual purpose hand grinders. Example Encore ESP vs 1zpresso K-Max. Or Fellow Opus vs X-Pro or something.
Oh and off-topic, but why did you start referring them as one-zpresso in your last couple of videos instead of EZ-presso? Are viewers getting confused when it's not spelled out for them?
