You are so fortunate to have a job that allows you to work in gardens!!! Think of those stuck in an office or plant! Yes, it's a challenge to the body, but also what a delight!

Me too, because it's such a small garden. I get to be a bit more "grand" with the planting regimen. Honestly I've not really tried a "low maintenance", wildlife garden before. So I'm kinda flying blind 😂

Very frosty indeed! It's a very narrow yard, isn't it? I love getting them back to manageable places, then creating a brilliant plan! I look forward to what you will create for her and get pup. I love brick work and the hardscapes so prevalent in English gardens. Such great bones!
What is the name of the long handled scraper you used like a sharp hoe? I have 5 different varieties of Butterfly Bushes, white, Black, Purple, Pink... They are fantastic! Our hummingbirds like them as well here. I hope you earned up with a hot cup of tea when you were done. You earned it. Blessings from the PNW! 💛🖤💛 Stacy

Thanks for explaining when you're taking something out such as the weeds and undesirable plants (for those of us in the US), and leaving the desirable plants like the the butterfly bush, peony, etc. You're the real deal.

Oh wow, I really appreciate this comment. I'm glad you like the video, I've had requests to talk a bit more about the plants, and to be honest, I'm more than happy to do so.
I'm always a happier gardener when I'm actually gardening as opposed to strimming and mowing everything is sight 🤣😅

Cornflower and lavender were already on my potential list....but now in permanent ink 😅 I think poppies will be to.
They self set quite readily, but for none gardeners (like her) they are easy to spot when they need thinning out after a few years.

Loved this wintry tidy, Martin! ❄ This is the second time seeing it. I think it's so quaint, and I particularly love the hardscapes: paths, stairs, patios. I am not sure why it's one of my favorite things on our property, but Momma had the same passion for it as well. I'm lucky enough to have several spots like this.
About 25 years ago, when I was testing out my masonry muscles at Momma's, I built a brick path, which I call, "4-Pillar Path". Yep you guessed it; there are 4 pillars (2 at beginning, 2 at the end), also with black arches, gate on one. I have 4 medallions in them as well which gave them nice interest. (And boy does the site need repairs! Poor "Dove's Nest." 🥺) I loved seeing you sit on the steps and clean the little bed beside it.
I think this is the perfect size for the new tenant since she will have her hands full inside. I hope you get to visit this little devil again. I saw you mentioned you may be able to swing a pressure wash (Lord, don't get me started on my large back yard patio, covered in moss...ugh!) I hope she lets you plant up a bit as well, making it beautiful, functional, and low maintenance. Fingers crossed.
Today is 06/19/24. Hope you are well and had a nice break from the busy summer there. In Lakewood, WA we are having lovely weather, and I'm almost done with weeding the Potager, (which has been without vegetables for almost 6 years now) and filling a couple pots out front with flowers. Have to take it slow, as my back gripes more than I do! Miss your posts. Blessings comin your way from here to over there! 💛🖤💛 Stacy

@@martinthegardenguy, Hi Martin, actually in my area it’s considered the only area in the U.S. that is slowly decreasing the amount of snow unlike any other. So far we have had maybe 2 inches this winter and then it’s always gone in days. I think living near Cape Cod plays into this and the warmer ocean temperatures. All said we are expecting our first storm of the year. We might get 3-6” while other areas in Massachusetts are expected 7-12”. I’m rewatching all my favorite videos tonight, hubby has the SuperBowl on, and my Patriot’s didn’t make it this year.😢. Looking forward to your spring videos. Again, great video !!!!!!!

Your technique is so good - you manage to not only weed, but loosen the soil which is so important - that’s the beauty of going beyond just cutting stuff down. Even in the winter weather the changes you made are stunning. Another one pulling up a chair for your spring planting video! The leaves came off the sycamores in our tract the last 2 weeks. Somehow they all land in our front garden and sidewalks - the perils of a corner lot. We are currently discussing my need for dahlias vs his need not to have to plant them LOL. have an awesome weekend 😊

Well, this was a lovely comment. Thank you so much ❤️ I'm looking forward to getting this garden done in spring too, I've got grand plans 😅
I certainly can relate with the sycamore you have....and the ones you don't! 🤣 I look after a few gardens of clients with a similar situation.
Do you find that the germination rates of sycamore tree seeds to be close to 100% as well? 🤣 I'm still "weeding" them out of some gardens from earlier on in the year. And now, like you, I have the leaves to deal with as well 😁
I try to bag them up and make leaf mold, but there are so many I could start a commercial operation. 😂
You have a great weekend to

First time seeing your channel. I’m so impressed. I especially like when you describe what the plant names are. I really like watching yard/garden transformations or just maintaining it…the key word watching. I can’t stand doing it. It’s great to know there are people like you who love it.
Seems to me that the Brits are pretty much the only yard guys who get down on hands and knees to weed.
How long in real time did this take?

    • @martinthegardenguy
      @martinthegardenguy  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Haha, that's cool that you love gardening without actually gardening. It's not for everyone 😅 thanks for watching.
This took about 4 hours in real time, but quite a bit of faff with the camera etc.
As regards getting down and grafting, I've always loved the process of gardening. I'm sure more power tools could speed things up a bit, but to me it'd be like spray painting a model airplane instead of using a brush 😂
Although, to be fair, this was a very small garden. If it was a few acres I'd be breaking out the zero turn! 😁
Thanks again for watching and your comment.

It's going to be great to see what you do with this in the Spring. I would imagine you will be power washing the cement? The water feature is going to be great if you can get that working. I love hummingbird and butterfly flowers. Purple coneflower, beebalm, fuchsia, orange jewelweed and honeysuckle are some of my favorites, and of course a butterfly bush. It will be fun to see what you come up with. I see there is a nice pine tree not far, and a woodpile for cocoons with milkweed nearby would be good for the butterflies out in the yard. It's been awhile since I have had a garden but I did do a hummingbird and butterfly garden and the hummingbirds nested in the pine.

I'm glad you do 😁 I also love them 😂 I'm obsessed with cool gardening kit. Especially the manual or old fashioned kind, even if they do have a more modern take.

Those long-handled ’side shears’ are awesome! Is there a brand or better name? I want to try to find those here in the states.
What a great shape up and goal for her garden! 🎉

Hi 👋 thanks for the comment.
The grass shears (or edging shears) I use I actually got from the local hardware store. So I'd guess you'd struggle finding them. The brand is Hawksmore.
But with edging shears, just buy the best you can afford. Quality and longevity 👍😊

You should 😊👍 they are awesome. Very simple and effective.
Only thing to remember is try not to catch too many stones with the blades when you are cutting 😅

Yeah, that's a great idea. I think she plants to do that herself. And then repaint them 👍
It should look great when it's all planted up.
      Thanks 👍 😊
