I have while I was out with a friend for his birthday. The guy seemed ok, and I could afford to give him the cash, but my buddy and I made sure not to give him our real names anyway. I guess my thought is always, "I hope that if I were ever that low, someone would take pity on me and help me out."

I've had guys come at me for money before. Thing is, growing up in the inner city, you just don't have a lot of trust for random strangers. So, cash is never on the table. If they come up asking for some money to buy food, i offer to go to a close by fast food joint or grocery store or whatever is close by and pick something up for them. If they accept the food instead of cash, they are probably genuine. The scammers will turn down an offer of food and only want cash. So, those ones i'll just let them walk. At a gas station, if they are asking for money for gas, I tell them i'll go pay to put it in the tank for them so they get a full tank and I only spend what they actually need, cause if they are scammers they can't use a full gas tank, and it's probably already full. End of the day though, I never let them touch the money, or even think there is a chance i'll just hand them cash and leave. The people who are genuine will accept the help because they are genuinely getting what they need. Scammers will always turn you down, because you aren't putting cash in their hands and walking away, which is what they REALLY want.

Here is kind of a litmus test I did for a panhandler once. I ordered some fried pickles and as much as I love them, I didn’t finish them all. I saw this man and I decided to slip a $20 bill in the bag. If he took it, yay he got something extra! If not, oh well, sucks to suck.
He took the bag and thanked me.

I honestly don't mind buying people meals if they are really hungry. I was once approached by a Chinese man outside a jack in the box who said he had just got a job as a cook at a restaurant in the same parking lot but did not start until the next day, amd hadn't had a chance to find a room yet. He said he was starving and asked if I could buy him dinner inside, when I asked what he wanted he simply said "anything." I was happy to oblige and bought him the meal with the most calories, I think it was a triple ultimate burger combo, said enjoy it, and left. Never saw him again.
Another time I was in a KFC and there was a female customer in front of me, obviously homeless and not all there, brainwise. She ordered but did not have enough to pay and it was obvious the cashier was getting really uncomfortable because, although she didn't become belligerent, she was rambling a lot, pacing in front of the register, and the cashier was having trouble dealing with her. I stepped in and said I would take care of the cost of her meal and that she could keep what money she had. She didn't quite grasp that i was buying her food at first, but eventually got the clue, took her food and left. I'd never been more profusely thanked by a fast food cashier before, let me tell you!

The KFC one reminds me of an instance I had in Seattle. Used to know the owner of a convenience store as I was pretty regular there on my way to work for a bit and whenever I went I usually also would buy a meal for one of the homeless folks asking for cash to buy food with. Those that were actually trying to eat would never pass when I offered to buy their meal instead. One day I bought a meal for a lady that was clearly mentally ill and likely also an addict. After I paid and she had left the owner stopped me and asked,
"Why do you buy food for those people?"
      And my response was simple.
      "Because they're hungry."
People going hungry is something that irks me to absolutely no end purely because there is zero reason for it at this point. We over fish and hunt and farm to the point that we are depleting everything, yet half of it gets wasted and thrown in the garbage, and yet there are still people legitimately starving? I have a hard time wrapping my head around that concept.

I was leaving a fast food place one afternoon and a shy homeless man was waiting in the entryway. He asked politely if I might buy him a sandwich. I immediately went back in and bought him a combo of his choice which he was SO grateful. I gave him the change from the $20 and told him it was so he had money for supper. I always wish I could do more for people like that.

I had this one “homeless” lady come up to me trying to get 20. She kept saying that she’s homeless, gonna die in 3 months and pregnant. I kept saying no since I was just starting college and told her this. She brushed it off and kept pointing out the ATM on the other side of the street. Once she realized I wasn’t gonna give her money she went back to bother other people. Couple days I later I told my friend and once I described her she had a gut feeling that it was her ex girl friend I was talking to. She pulled out a picture of the ex that she that it was and boom, it was her. She mentioned the only thing that her ex said could be real, was she was pregnant.

I was one time the person asking for money at a gas station. I wasnt scamming, but it was my first day at a new job 1.5h away from home, I had only gas for 1/4 of the way and I forgot my wallet at home. A truckdriver was so kind to give me 20€, but only because I showed them my ID, that I luckily had with me. When I came home that evening, I transfered 25€ back to his bankacc and thanked for the help. Not everyone asking for help/money is shady, but I wouldnt give a stranger my money, without insurance to get it back...

I once lived next door to one of the largest parks in Las Vegas, and had to walk past it on my way to and from work (I only worked a mile away). Every morning, I'd stop at the 7-11 on the corner and buy a hotdog and a soda. Not for me, but for this really nice homeless guy that lived at the corner of the park. The first time I met him, I had decided to take the bus the short trip, and he was at the stop at the corner asking for spare change. I gave him a couple bucks and talked to him. He was a nice guy. He obviously had some mental problems that he needed help with, but I could see he wasn't on drugs... his family had kicked him out as a teenager, and he was just doing the best he could. I stopped every day I could after that, brought him something to eat, and treated him to some normal conversation. I still wonder what ever happened to him after I moved away. I hope he got real help.

@@levi9651 how are not all homeless people down on their luck? They are homeless!! Like, sure, some of them might "deserve" it because it's Was totally their fault becoming homeless. And yes, some are really scetchy or try and trick people into getting money! But still! I want to see YOU living on the streets for 3+ years and fighting for your life and NOT getting scetchy! When you have nothing and every day you struggle to get food or water you WILL try to appease peoples hearts with "my puopy here needs food"
It's so "funny" to me, how people are so plainly hate full towards homeless people of they try and "sc am" you! Like, sure. It's annoying if they try to get money out of you. But still, what would YOU do if you were in the same situation!
Don't get me wrong! I don't condone that they are lying but seriosly: If they were honest you still would not give them money!
I mean! Look at DarkFluffs comments! Like he said at 9:14 "I don't care if he starved but I don't want the dog to starve" like.. Wow... How cruel are you, that it doesn't matter if a HUMAN starves but the poor dog does not? And be honest: almost every human thinks that!
You don't need to help homeless people. But don't expect help if some time you are in the same spot.
I personally don't give money but if someone want's me to help I would buy them food or drinks. If they only want money, they don't get that from me. But I would buy them nurishment.

I used to work in areas with a lot of scamming panhandlers, so my shield goes all the way up the moment someone approaches me in a parking lot with an "Excuse me, sir?"
We had a guy that would run the "can I borrow some cash for a cab?" scam frequently on patrons outside of my bar. Our bar had a policy that we paid cab fare for anyone that asked for a cab - cheaper than a dram shop lawsuit. After a few weeks, we got fed up & decided to put an end to it. We would wait until he was in the middle of telling his tale of woe to some unwitting, sympathetic person & then tell him we have him covered for cab fair. This happened about 3 or 4 times before he stopped hanging around.

That reminds me of "Wimpey" from the Popeye comics/cartoons. He was always wanting to borrow the cost of a hamburger and promising to pay it back on "Tuesday". I don't think it was ever explicitly stated whether or not he actually paid back any of those "loans" with the reader/viewer left to draw their own conclusions.
Edit: I guess I've been lucky because the only times I've had someone wanting either money or food, I didn't get any "scammer" vibes off of them. One got $5.00 (enough for a couple of cans of food from a supermarket) and the other was very grateful to be given some cans of food which I had stored away for emergencies.

When I was in middle school, I was scammed by this one kid who tried to take advantage of my kindness. At school we had those fundraisers that you sell things from catalogs and I managed to make quite a bit of money. I knew a lot of people and they bought things because they liked me not because they needed it. In comes the kid who scammed me a day before I had to give the money to the school. He gave me this sob story that his mom went to prison and needed help paying her bail. He said if I could give him $200 dollars he would pay me back. I went to a catholic private school before this school so I was always wanting to be a great person like they taught me to be. So I like an idiot gave it to him. My mom when I got home was very mad when I did that and told me I was scammed. We called the school and police and managed to get the money back and decided not to press charges but it taught me a valuable lesson that you don’t give money to people you don’t know well or that you aren’t sure you can trust.

Quote from "Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes", 24 June 2016:
The good will be quick to help others in need. They do this without hesitation. Without first requiring proof that the need is genuine. But before they condemn the accused, before they bring harm to others, no matter how justified it may seem, they hesitate. They demand proof. Evil will often believe that they're fighting for good. But when others are in need, they'll become reluctant, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need.
And yet evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack others. For evil, proof isn't needed to bring harm. Only hatred and a mantra that they fight for peace and righteousness.

When I came out of the store, I noticed him walking around the car and his girlfriend made a comment about me locking my car doors, so I'm guessing they tried to get into my car for stuff to steal.

As a very young man, my husband was at an ATM when a couple approached, saying they couldn’t get the ATM to work with their card, and were traveling and needed cash. They said they would write him a check. It bounced of course. Back then, for us, $30.00 was a lot of money. His dad helped us out but said it was a cheap lesson. Another time, my husband was at the local market and a guy asked for some change to buy a beer. My husband appreciated his honesty and gave him a couple of dollars, which was more than the guy was asking for. It wasn’t much, and it wasn’t a grand noble cause, like helping that poor couple at the ATM, but unlike that couple, the man was honest.

I and my family was at Cracker Barrel one day and a man came over and said his car had broken down and a local church paid for it to get fixed. But he and his family was on their way home to Florida and they had no money for food. That is when he asked us, we told him that we didn't have any money on us. This is the good part the next Sunday he walked up to ask us money again we recognized him and went in to get the manager. We haven't seen him since.

When I was a delivery driver in the nearby university town, I saw a WHOLE BUNCH of people on the side of the roadways with signs begging for money. I felt really bad for them, because this is august in florida, and no scammer in their right mind would be sitting out in the hot humid sun to get money if they didn't absolutely need it.
However, as a delivery driver, I was poor myself, and hardly one step above them, in all honesty, so I had no cash to give. However, as a part of my diabetes, I was VERY thirsty all the time, and I carried around a couple 24-packs of water bottles which I used to combat this. Whenever I had to stop at a long light, there was always someone there begging for sparw change, and I would hand them a water because it's important to stay hydrated if you're spending prolonged time in direct sunlight. I will never forget the amount of grateful looks and thank yous I got simply for showing them that little bit of concern. It wasn't what they wanted, but it was a need I tried to fill. One time I gave a man a water bottle and watched him run a quarter of it through his hair to cool himself off, haha. XD

I went to my pantry and got a few can food items , put them in a bag, came back to the door and handed him the bag of food. He looked at me and said that he really needed money. I told him to take what he got that that was the best I could do. He never came back. I knew that if i gave him cash he would not stop coming to me for more money.

Frustrated, they generally grumble something like freaking foreigners and walk away in search of another victim. After shopping and if I happen to see them as I’m driving out of the lot, I roll the window down and say have a nice day....in perfect English.

Winter 2018-2019, I was downtown in a small city, doing the rounds in Pokemon Go after a D&D session at a comic book shop. A guy stops me and practically begs for money for a cab, I tell him I've got no cash. He doubles down, offers me any DVDs I want out of the bags he and his lady friend were carrying, and my confusion grows. He keeps pressing and won't leave me alone, so I cave and offer to get him an Uber to the city across the river.
While the app is downloading, he keeps rambling on and on in a way that's making me feel decreasingly safe, and eventually this guy on a bicycle comes up and joins the conversation. I don't remember the details, but for some reason or another things turned hostile, the guy with the bike was getting in the first guy's face and bellowing about how he was a veteran with PTSD or something. I was already feeling uneasy as it was, this brought things right to the "I don't feel safe" stage so I snuck away and started speedwalking up a side street across the road. I hear the first guy call after me, my anxiety triggers my flight response, and I ran about a block to get back to my car at the comic book shop, get in, and drive away back home.
I haven't been downtown at night since then.

Thankfully I never was scammed, I've never given money to someone random I didn't know. I have given cookies to homeless people, but that's because my MIL made me too many of my favorite cookies - she made me like 3 dozen chocolate caramel cookies and I realistically only eat like 1-2 cookies a day and so I was going to end up throwing away most of them when they ultimately went bad. Saw a dude begging for money and I just rolled down the window and said, "Hey man, I don't have money, but would you like some of these homemade chocolate and caramel cookies?" He thanked me a whole ton for the cookies and I told him the place I worked at down the road was hiring people to assemble hardware if he was interested. He declined the job offer and hinted at a disability so I'm not sure if he was a scammer or not, I hope he works it out eventually. Still, I don't feel bad giving out food that would otherwise go to waste.

About two weeks go by and he is on his way to lunch, and the same man approaches him with the same story. I mean exact! My husband then asks him if he remembered him. Of course he doesn't. Same story, same papers, Everything.. He says "we met a while back.. I took you to lunch and helped you out and here you are AGAIN?" Man then says "I'm Sorry Man, you gotta understand." Husband says "what I understand is you are out here taking money from hard working people, who don't mind helping others until people like you show up repeatedly!" Man then tells him.. he'll never do it again.. And Thanked My Husband. He found out later he just changed streets, sad really.

We were just chilling out in the parking lot talking when this person came up asking for any kind of money we could spare. They gave a sob story (I don't remember the specifics of the story, its been about 16 years or so), but we handed over whatever spare change and a few dollars or so (it was maybe $10 max total from all of us) and they left. Not 5-10 minutes later someone came up with the same EXACT sob story. We told them we had just given all we had to someone else and they left. We looked at each other like, "Did that just happen?" We got out of there before anyone else could come up to try the same thing.

So in our area, we have this HUGE problem with people asking for money EVERYWHERE. It's a tri-state area and has many interconnecting cities. It's so bad here that one particular city has added signs at locations with heavy vehicle traffic, asking people not to give at street corners, but rather give to local charities instead. One particular beggar defends his spot so much so, he literally sits directly under one of these signs because of the large volume of traffic... apparently it's a prime spot and unsuspecting people ignore the signs.
Also, I used to work on the top floor of a building that was next to an Interstate Off-ramp and had a really good view of it. There was one particular beggar who liked to beg for money at a particular off-ramp, usually about once a week. When she was done, we could watch her pack up her stuff and walk to her car that was parked at the park-and-ride parking lot, and drive off.

This isn’t a revenge story, but you asked if we’d ever been scammed. I don’t even know if this qualifies as a scam, but your story about the gas station reminded me of this. I’m a female. At the time I was in my mid thirties. I had a job, but it didn’t pay well, and I never had a lot of extra money. I used a debit card so I didn’t have to carry cash around. So, I stopped at a 7-11 one night to pick up milk and a couple of other things. When I came out of the store there were two young, normally dressed, able bodied men sitting on the curb that runs around the store. I always do my best to keep people like this from engaging me in conversation, but I failed this time. One of them asked me if I could spare any cash so they could buy something to eat. I told them I didn’t have any cash and started to get in my car. Then I heard one of them say loudly to the other, “sure, but she’s got a car!” Just before I sat down I called back, “And I also have a job! You should try it!” Then I started up my ancient automobile and drove off. I’m generally pretty generous, but these guys didn’t look at all like they were poor and hungry. Does anybody who owns a vehicle have a responsibility to throw cash around for the asking?

As a 19 or 20 year old college kid, I had a layover in an airport (Chicago, I think). I was a very young looking Asian kid back when most Americans thought all Asians spoke with a Chinese accent. I looked like a foreign traveler.
I went to the cafeteria at the airport. The ones that sold stale, foil wrapped burgers and fries that you served yourself.
I had a burger and fries and a soft drink. A comparable meal at McDonald's would have been under $5. This was 1983 or 84.
The cashier told me my total was $40. I said, in perfect English, "$40 for a burger and fries?"
She was surprised I spoke English and said that total includes the food two young boys had piled high on their tray behind me. The boys were 8-10 years old and not the same race as me. We were definitely not a family unit, nor was I even acknowledging them as someone who was traveling with kids would do.
The cashier motioned with her head, and the boys put their food back. I think it was a scam to overcharge foreigners not familiar with US currency by having them unknowingly buy a massive amount of food for those boys.

I was homeless for 2 years back when I was around 24. I told my tale on another DarkFluff video. I had let K2 (known as fake weed) get me down to the point I lost my warehouse job and apartment. It was not until I hit the street with my car and few belongings I knew I had messed up. My car was an '85 Buick and it had so many problems constantly but never stopped running. So I at least had an emergency shelter if needed. I worked out a deal with a local storage unit to park my car in the furthest parking spot and would give them $10 a week to not get towed. I managed to buy a tent and small propane burner with what money I had left. The rest was used to buy a small saucepan and a good amount of ramen. That way I knew I had something to eat if I got nothing that day.
I panhandled on the nearest street which happened to near an interstate intersection (cars exiting and entering the interstate) with a sign that said "I will accept anything. I just need help because I am a moron." Most people just gave change but let them know I was grateful of anything but sometimes people would come back by with a meal or just some water and a sandwich. I never once took it for granted. 2 years later my old trade school friend found out what happened and allowed me to stay with them. I managed to get back on my feet. I never stopped being grateful to them. However moving into their apartment my Buick finally crapped out on me. It ran for a solid 8 years with mileage over 300k so I was proud of it.

My husband (now ex) and I were heading to Walmart to get some baby stuff and we came across a couple sitting in a van in the parking lot asking for money to get home. We put little gas in their van and gave them little bit of money to get home on. I have a phone scammer story. I was visiting my family in a different country for the summer. My phone of course time was pretty different where my home country is, so I had to wait a certain time to call or text those back home. One night I was laying down playing games and it was about midnight. I'm a night owl so it's pretty normal for me to stay up late and I receive a a call from a scammer. I would have not answered but I was board and decided a small entertainment. I pick up my phone and answered. The scammer goes to tell me about my credit card (I don't have one) and how I need to pay. Then when she stopped talking, in my best sleepy yet angry voice, "You Woke Me Up To Tell Me This Sh*t?! You Woke Me Up From My Fu*king Nap You Son Of A Bit*h!" . She hanged up and I never received any more scammer calls the rest of the summer.

I was homeless for 3 month a long time ago. I know how hunger feels. But I also know how homeless people who are older then 16 are in Germany. Nobody 16+ HAS to be homeless here. (And I think the law which made me homeless was also cancelled some time ago). When this happened, I had not much money. Like 50 bucks a month for food/sanitary products/etc. A boy came to me and told me he hadn't eaten in 2 days and asked for money. I wasn't sure how old he was. He could have been 14-20. I told him I wouldn't give him any money, but I could go to the supermaket and get him something to eat, if he likes. He begged for money, I told him no and went away. He followed me and said, ok he would take the food. I didn't want to, but was still not sure if he really wasn't legit, so I went to get him something. I went into the store and bought what I would have loved to get when I was hungry. A packet of dark, dense full grain bread and a packet of carrots for the vitamins. Both last long, are healthy, and also cheap enough for me to afford. When I came out, I saw the disappointment in his eyes and knew he wasn't really hungry. I turned and walked away, but he tried to take my purse and run. Knowing he was up to something, I tripped him, took my purse and walked away. I really enjoyed a carrot soup with bread that evening.

Those sob story things are fairly common on german train stations. I usually tell them I happily buy them something to eat but they won't get any cash from me.
The most ridicoulus thing was that one guy who told me he hadn't eaten in three days. I offered him bread with some meat on it that my mom made for my train ride. He told me with Corona going on, he can't take any food from me, only cash is fine.
I asked: "So you really think you'd catch corona from a healthy persons bread that has only touched the hands of my mom so far than from cash that's been handed around between who knows how many people?"
His medical mask was more of a blue tissue with gray stains from smoking and wearing it for probably a week or something. He also only pulled it up to beg people for money.
So yeah he just wasn't interested in food.
I hate people like that. It makes me always doubt genuinly hungry people.

I used to watch the panhandlers outside an Arby's near my work that I would frequent at lunch time. Once the lunch rush was over, the panhandlers would walk across the street to their car and drive away, or to their big rig parked at the truck stop. I saw it often enough that I will never give cash to anyone panhandling.

Dogs first! A homeless guy walked right up to my car window after getting gas. Kind of scared me (single woman), and asked for money for food. I had gotten a pre-packaged Cobb salad I had taken to work but hadn’t eaten, so I offered it to him. I don’t usually use dressing on my salads, just how I like them. The homeless man accepts, and as he’s walking away, turns and growls, “NO dressing?!?” I went home.

Whenever someone tries to scam me for money I ALWAYS say that I don't carry cash. You can tell these days who NEEDS money for food and who is scamming you it only depends on the person's judgment to help out or not.
Be careful out there guys! There are a lot more scammers out there from the pandemic!

100%. I had a guy ask me for money at a gas station for food. I said "sorry, I don't carry cash, but I can get you some food." And ge was immediately agitated and said "there's an ATM inside. You can pull out cash. They only have junk food in there. I need something more substantial." And I said something like "well I'm sorry sir, I understand you don't want sugary foods all the time. But I will not be giving you cash. If you're hungry or thirsty, I will get you food inside or something from one of the food places down the road, but I will not hand you cash. I don't have that much money to give (ATMs usually only give out money in $20s), but I am willing to buy you a meal. Do you want food, or are you just trying to steal money?" And he looked irritated but then backtracked, and was like "no, I actually am hungry and homeless, I'm just tired of fast food. I guess I'll take you up on the food offer." And we went inside, but he picked out an Oatmeal Cream Pie snack cake and a 16oz pop bottle. I bought it, but I'm pretty confident he was full of shit and it was a scam. Because I pointed out nuts and powerade and fresh fruit inside that would be far more substantial and healthier than fast food. But whatever. I wasted like $4 on food that was probably never eaten instead of lining a scammer's pocket with $20.

I’m commenting years after you posted. Since there are probably a lot of young people in your audience, remind them to be aware of strangers asking to use their phones for a call. The phone itself can be stolen by being handed off to a runner. But also cash can be quickly removed from cash apps or the phone wallet which is usually not double passcode protected.

I haven't had a scammer with a sob story but I have a story about a scammer. There is a scam where someone calls you to tell you that you owe the IRS money. I told the man that no I don't owe the IRS any money and that I will speak to my lawyer about it. He ended the call really quick.

My mom went to K-Mart over 20 years ago. She went to go inside , I think she was getting clothing for my sister and I. A homeless woman stopped her to ask for money for food because she said she was hungry, my mother told her that she didn’t have any cash on her so sorry. Well my mother remembered that she was hungry so bought her a sandwich and gave it to her as she left the store. The woman looks at the sandwich and says “ Bi$&@, I said I wanted money not food” and she throws it in the trash. And my mother replied” well you said you were hungry and I bought you a sandwich. So not to worry no cash for you.

in the neighbourhood i grew up, there's this random guy who always asking ppl for quarters because he doesn't have enough bus fare to go home (the neighbourhood is near a college/university), he probably asked me two to three times in my lifetime when i was in highschool and asked my brother on a separate occasion for quarters. i was just horrified when this guy approached me when i was bit older and out of university for my phone number and wanted to grab a coffee with me. hard pass

We have 'regulars' outside of our store and have had to trespass the more aggressive ones. One gal I've seen all over town, is considered needing money for gas because her brother died. Like, how many brothers do you have lady?

My bus driver back in school told me he knew a bunch of "homeless people" and the real story was they are either drunks or druggies, and to just have a care package like food, and water.

I once saw a panhandler with a sign that said he was trying to get money for a ride to get back home in a town which was 3 hours away. I asked him how he got to this town in the first place and he refused to answer. Naturally I gave him nothing and he remained there for another 2 weeks still asking for a ride home.

The "I'm stuck in a foreign country and have been robbed of my money and passport" is more usually an identity-theft thing, sent by some third party who has obtained access to someone else's contact list.

I owned a coffee shop for a few years. I've also been a clergy person for 25 years (same kind of profession, just different venues. (At one I stood behind a pulpit, the other behind a counter.) My BS meter is pretty well tuned and I can usually tell when someone is trying to scam me. One time a lady came into the church (major Protestant denomination) and since my administrative assistant wasn't there and I was the only staff person, she asked me for money. I told her honestly that I didn't have any, nor access to any cash (I had none in my wallet and we didn't keep any cash at the church.). But I offered, "I can't give you cash, but we do have a small food pantry here, and I can give you all the groceries you need for the next two weeks if you would like." She stomped off cursing me and the church all the way down the parking lot. At the coffee shop I always had scammers try to scam me. The most they would get would be a hot cup of coffee (not a latte) and a day-old bagel or donut.
