I do like that the Final Fantasy collab was treated as just a freak incident that just happened one day so now there's just random Cactaurs just scattered throughout the Wildspire forever after the FF questline. Very Monster Hunter of them. Would love to see another FF collab in Wilds.
@@Jarubimba At the end of HR (after Xeno) you start the quest just like the Witcher crossover or the one that activates HR Deviljho by talking to NPCs in Astera, in this case the Serious Handler at the Tradeyard. Welcome to Monster Hunter World. Where the Vespoids are the strongest monster and the Slinger does the strangest things. I do believe I’ve found another channel to watch. (Also, Douse Shinundakara threw me off so hard when it played, I love that game so much.)

This was awesome, I'd have really enjoyed seeing full unedited footage of his experience up to getting to astera the first time. The appearance of zorah, the anjanath fighting the jagras, aaaahhh that would be dope.

I too started with Rise, and went back to try World. I was at HR and MR 900+ so I know exactly what I'm doing there in Rise. Lol took a little bit to get used to World's mechanics. And I'm still learning.
I've been replaying World recently, and tbh it's definitely better than I thought, but there are some things I really didn't like about it, such as the weapon designs, etc. I did have some funny moments, like the time where I was gonna test out to see what a dung pod dies on a Tobi, but while doing so I ended up killing it instead.
i fully agree. i replied to another comment just now with what was gonna be a short comment and ended up being... probably a script a video essay on the channel about the shortcomings of rise's story XD
Love seeing your buddy enjoy mhw. I never really got into rise, played it a little but as an og mh player since the first game for some reason I just didn't get hook on rise at all. Can't wait for mh wilds to release.
thats the plan! gonna be a bit before i have enough footage for a part 2 to this video in particular, but I have a challenge run video coming out this week to tide ya'll over :D
15:24 watching this really reminds me of the 1st tech demo they've shown for World. In that demo Anjanath tracked the hunter the whole way through the map. I can see the possibility of that supposedly being a bigger part of the game than it is now.
I'm surprisingly got used to World after Rise Mostly because I'm a Switch Axe main and my builds mostly focused on Evade Extenders and Evade Window so I use Dodge more often than Wirebugs.
don't forget, rise was also made during the pandemic too so that unfortunately hurt how well it coulda really been, i mean look at how awesome Sunbreak was.
absolutely!! and its perfectly understandable how rise could have suffered from that, and I do think its a good game overall too. however, having a valid reason for why a game has problems does not change the fact that the game has problems, and in my own personal opinion, more problems than world to me, thats a similar argument to saying that astro boy or dragonball are must see anime simply because they are influential, when they are FAR from perfect shows that don't hold up super well to todays standards and while I do think sunbreak was a VAST improvement to rise by an exponential margin, I still have issues with it that prevent me from enjoying it as much as even base world
@@Bison-Storytime I wish I could enjoy world as much as rise. But there's just SO much running around thru the maps and no movement options, gets old fast.
@@musicarain4702 you know what's funny about that, is despite the faster character movement in rise, I feel like I move through the map slower compared to world because every zone is like a quarter mile from the next zone over with nothing interesting to look at. He did actually. I had to admit it from the video since the audio wasn't great for it, but it did make up a chunk of the conversation on that quest lol

I have 300 hours in rise, just started MHW last week. I can say I do miss the wirebugs and doggo mounts, but gameplay is fairly the same. I do miss landing Shoryuken with SnS.
I only know MHW, but I've heard that in MH Rise you can pause the game when playing single player though. That don't sound like much, but in MHW some hunts can take upwards of an hour, & god help you if you need to use the john, or get a phone call.
A quest in World takes about the same amount of time it does in Rise, it just comes down to player skill and understanding. World not having a pause button for solo is a big flaw, though.
Brave lad! I dont think i could ever go back to world after playing Rise.. the improvements and gameplay they brought into the game just.. i cant go back..!
As someone who play this game from the first gen mh game where most people say its unplayable..then to mh2 dos,tri,4th ultimate, generation, world ib,and lastly rise sunbreak..i do say all of them has its own taste..like world got clutch claw..and rise have wirebug..rise playstyle is more faster and mobile since wirebug really make most ur weapon skill much faster..
Rise is my first Monster Hunter game, which got me into the series, so it has a special place in my heart. I'm a HH main in both games and I can see why people were so divided on the weapon. Both games are pretty awesome.
They better brink back this style of canteen where you can actually watch them prepare the food you order rather than simple dingos that are made the same each way such a simple thing but adds a nice touch to the game
There's nothing more satisfying than hitting a monster with a full powered Spirit Helm Breaker in World. Rise made me quit using Longsword, the parry bullcrap is the reason why
bruh its not just a man shaped cactus xD thats a god! an entity of fear beware the 10000 needles and you gotta play some final fantasy now too!! (there is no debate this is what monster hunter should be, rise made the game appeal to 10 year olds, it wasnt about that before)
so fun fact, you're not the first person to tell me this, someone else told me this a couple days ago. but i looked an looked and closely examined the title and still couldn't find it and assumed they were mistaken XD. then you said it and i figured if 2 people said it there must be something there, and only spotted it after 3 more close checks just now lol. my brain just REFUSED to see the misspelling of hunter thank you so much. fixing it now
The base i-frames in Rise are pretty small but with EW5, iirc they aren't too far behind World's. The main issue then comes from how many attacks have long active frames, you can i-frame an attack when it gets its hurtbox, but still get hit after your i-frames end simply because the attack lingers longer
it would be crazy playing rise first then this realising this seems like a step up even though it's the older game just because of the more powerful hardware
yeah its in a couple areas of the video. im aware of it, but im not sure whats causing it. been trying slightly different audio settings every time i record
@@Pablo1517 no he did, but in his and my opinions, sunbreak didn't fix enough, and it doesn't matter to someone playing rise for their first time that all your biggest issues with the game are fixed at the... 50% completion mark
thank you so much!! the next in this series will take a bit to come out as i wanna cover the rest of low rank and we've gotten distracted with side quests and testing new weapons, but I have a challenge run video of world ive been working on for the past month that should be ready this week
Base World is better than base Rise, but I absolutely loathe Iceborne while Sunbreak almost gets to first part of 4U levels of good. I get why others don't like Rise though. The wirebugs trivialize the all of base Rise to a ridiculous degree, and every weapon getting counters is ridiculous. Base Rise's story is not great or that long, and what little story it does have is way too little spread out extremely poorly. Doesn't help that it wasn't even complete at launch. Sunbreaks is so good that I honestly have to question what happened in the first place. World's story is serviceable. Would probably like it if I cared for any of the characters, but I don't. The Handler is the only character I can actually remember off the top of my head. Some of World's roster do not translate as well or at all in Rise. Like Tobi Kadachi in the video, or Anjanth who feels like a joke on comparison to World's version. I do like Rise's new monsters over World's. Anjanath, Tobi Kadachi, and Odogaron are the only ones that I actually like in World. Everything else is mostly meh with a few duds. I prefer the maps in Rise, but that's me liking flatter maps in general. The slide attacks are cool, but I can count on one hand the amount of times I actually used them. The clutch claw sucks. It's one of the reasons I absolutely loath Iceborne. It's probably what people feel about wirebugs, but not using wirebugs doesn't double the amount of time it takes to hunt a monster. World being online upon launching the game is probably the reason they don't have a pause feature. It's not a problem most of the time, but it's a big one when stuff requires your attention irl. Also, why are other hunters only visible in the hubs. Why make the entire thing online if you're friends can't hangout with you in Astera/Seliana? Speaking of, I think they are super realistic towns, but they suck to navigate. Having everything close together is something I like in pretty much every other game in the franchise, and I hope whatever towns we get in Wilds can try to bridge the two. I don't like either games end game grinds. They both suck equally, and I honestly don't know how to fix it. Probably make it more like GU, the only endgame grind I enjoyed. I like the armor more in World, but Rise's weapons look 1000 time better. Hopefully, layered armor is unlocked earlier in Wilds because I'm tired of wearing clown sets for most of the game. Random decos suck, but so does the charm melding. I'd prefer both be craftable. I don't think i have anything else to say. I like them both equally for entirely different reasons. I can't wait to start again in Wilds.
I've actually done all those except freedom unite. I'm a hardcore longtime fan. Anthony is the new one. In that regard it's almost a ragegamingvideos pro and noob dynamic 😂 Who knows maybe we will do those after we finish iceborne though. Don't see that happening for a while seeing as we'll be taking our time through the game and we'll have wilds eventually as well Consider it on the list though!;

World is the highest point of the monster hunter games. They need to stop messing around with rise and wilds and just make world 2 there are some tweaks that could be made to the ui but other than that world is near perfection
I agree that world is a masterpiece and the highest point in the series so far, but I heavily disagree that rise and wilds should just be world 2. Being experimental and trying new things is a huge part of monster hunters identity. They tried some stuff with rise, some of it worked, some of it didn't, but it turned out a decent game (not as good as world, but still good) and especially as the portable title it's SUPPOSED to be more experimental Wilds is clearly taking more inspiration from world than rise, which I prefer, but I don't want world 2 and I'm going to embrace all the new stuff wilds is going to bring, regardless of if it works or not!
No. Iceborne has more problems than Sunbreak They need to take the best of both cause both have their upsides and downsides, if u can't see the faults then you're delulu
"World 2" Literally room temp (in Celsius) IQ, Wilds is being made by the home console team, (the same team that made World) - it's literally as close as anything will ever get to a "World 2" and you're dissing it before seeing anything more than _confirmation that it exists._
MHW while more immersive and way more beatiful just lacks a lot in terms of the combat compared to rise (inputs are delayed, no customizaition on moves, no aerial options except for IG). I really hope they step that up in wilds next year.
I mean let's not pretend that rise has perfect combat either, wyvern riding in particular stopped fights, and especially fights with teammates completely in it's tracks, and ruined any tension from invaders and other monsters interrupting. Wyvern riding to me is worse than any individual issue world has with it's combat Also rise has an issue where every weapon felt samey since they slapped counters on all of them, and hunting horn (my main) was absolutely GUTTED I will agree however that it was nice having more aerial options than ever, and the customization was nice to have
@@Bison-Storytime wyvern riding is garbage and has to go i agree. HH rework was also not it, true. I don't root for counters on every weapon. There are some that could use it, but it has to be harder / more resource intense. The wirebugs were nice for recovery but not very imersive. Also way too available. But having fighting styles to choose and switching between them (red/blue scroll) was awesome. The increased fight speed in general was great. P. Malzeno is such a fantastic fight. No monster in MHW gets close imo but that's subjective. Tldr: -no wyvern riding -not a counter for every weapontype and more skill / resource management to use it - reverse HH - a better, more immersive and nerfed solution to wirebugs. Or compleatly remove it maybe
@@uSil031 scrolls were indeed awesome. Loved that mechanic The speed is def a personal preference. Rise felt smooth and fast, but lacked a lot of impact on its hits and I never felt satisfied doing big hits The old games have A TON OF IMPACT when you hit things, but it's too far in the other direction where it's obviously clunky and not in a good way For me personally world is a happy medium where combat feels smooth and fluid, but there's still a ton of weight and impact behind hits, it feels kinda similar to elden ring to me in regards to speed to weight ratio I always do say however that except for wyvern riding and weapon imbalance and having too many counters, the raw mechanical combat of rise is the thing it really has going for it. But in general, and especially as a hunting horn main, I just can't enjoy it as much as world
@@Bison-Storytime It's not that I dont like world, I love that game. But I do hope for Wilds they improve on the sluggishness and add some more flexibility in terms of combat. Also a mount, but that is already confirmed by the trailer.
World was a modernized version of previous games, Rise on the other hand is a mish mash of RPG games put together. Wirebug bullcrap, overpowered parry of LS, Wyvern Riding, empty semi open world maps, boring story, toned down monster theme(except Narwa, Mizutsune and Valstrax themes), forgettable side characters, no gathering hub that could store up to 16 players.
Definitely disagree on the story part worlds story is boring rise and specifically sunbreaks story was actually fantastic because of how enjoyable the characters were like Galleus, Fiyo, and Bahari
yo honestly, i might use this as a video script. i wasn't planning on writing anything this long, but once i had the idea partway through of using this as a script i just kept going and it got really long lol. sorry in advance and i understand if you dont wanna read all this XD I'm running on the assumption this was intended to be a reply to my reply in the pinned comment and this whole comment is running off that assumption. I like replying and discussing stuff like this and find it entertaining and would like to provide my counterargument I get that some people like the sunbreak story, though me and anthony have quite a different perspective on it firstly, we can all agree that the base rise story sucked dick right? at least in comparison to world, iceborne, and sunbreak. like i don't have to elaborate on that and can spend my time talking about the sunbreak expansion? great thanks so yes, the sunbreak expansion storyline is A HUUUUUUGGGEE improvement over the base game, especially with more cutscenes and direct clear actions leading from one beat to the other, and there are a lot more characters too. however, I have 2 major issues with the story in sunbreak(i can't speak for anthony in regards to comparing it to world as he hasn't completed world yet, but we HAVE talked about his thoughts on the sunbreak story together and his ideas on some of its shortcomings) world's story followed the mystery of the elder crossing and after the zorah incident and became the much bigger mystery of what was DIFFERENT about this elder crossing and what caused zorah to abandon the vale and caused nergigante to migrate to the recess iceborne was solving the mystery of the legiana migration, and became a much bigger mystery related to why monsters were migrating across the continent as a whole, and what caused velkhana's aggitation. sunbreak's story followed the mystery of the crater and how malzeno could have possibly made it, as well as it's relation to qurio and how they effect monsters. on paper, the quality of these storyline's are all pretty comparable in quality and plot twists, as well as an evolving mystery based on the MH univers's speculative ecology. but just because the story itself is good doesn't necessarily mean it's been presented well, and I think the first big issue has to do with the key quest system. 1. Key quests I know the key quest system has been in pretty much every single monster hunter game EXCEPT for world, and a lot of the older monster hunter games aren't negatively effected by it, but I think it lends itself poorly to telling the stories that the 5th gen games have tried to go for, because it restricts the story to only having 1 storybeat every 4-6 key quests, and only having a quarter as many storybeats in a given story and absolutely KILLS the pace. the cutscens after the first urgent quest with crabby boy where you get ambushed by lunagaron was a genuine highlight of our sunbreak playthrough. it was more storytelling than we got in the entirety of the base game practically. however, those urgent quest cutscenes started losing A LOT of meaning when they are followed by 4 keyquests of monster's we've already killed before we can reach the next storybeat. by contrast, base world was EXCEPTIONALLY good at telling it's story and was mostly marred by a lack of quality of life on SECOND PLAYTHROUGHS due to a lack of skippable cutscenes because they had a set of campaign quests that you could do consecutively, and go farm optional quests as you saw fit. they also felt better to do since you only did a quest when you WANTED to do it. rise had a issue where you did the dango sidequests, farmed out the gear you wanted, got all ready for the next urgent quest, and... oops, looks like you have to kill 3 more unrelated monsters as homework and turn it in before you're allowed to progress the story world also had you kill most of the cast of the game in a similar way, taking on most of the 3 stars before you get to the 4 stars, ect. however it didn't FEEL like homework because they were directly incorporated INTO the story. sunbreak definetely had it better than rise just due to having storybeats be halfway through each set of keyquests instead of doing all of them at once before you get one, but it still suffers. for example lets compare the 3 and 4 star questline of world (and not even the coral highland and rotten vale parts of 4, just until zorah because i am going easy on rise) to one of the most praised questlines of rise, the 4,5 and 6 star part of sunbreak. in sunbreak, you go to hunt a lunagaron because... its in the way. you kill it, and on your way back are ambushed by malzeno. the qurio absorb blood from the lunagaron, and fiorane fights malzeno. she gets stabbed and sustains a serious injury we need a doctor to fix. then we do 3 key quests to kill time, then we find the doctor. then we do 3 key quests to kill time, then bahari did some research on the qurio and figured out where malzeno is, fiorane is better, and we go kill malzeno. then we realize we're missing something about the qurio and need to keep researching it. so we do 3 key quests to kill time, then we have to kill shigaru magala... because he's there. then we do 3 more key quests and get to THE SINGLE BEST QUEST IN THE ENTIRE STORY, where the map is devoid of life and we fight a jacked lunagaron again surounded by no plant or endemic life, and a whole bunch of dead large monsters. (this is my and anthony's favorite part of the game and we wish more quests changed up the formula or had us do something other than just hunt a monster. he also specifically said he wished there was more enviromental interaction throughout the rest of the game so that the difference could be seen more starkly). then we witness the qurio acting strangely and gathering around gaismagorm, who is now out of hiding because we killed his rival malzeno, and we go and kill him. this takes roughly 15 quests AT A MINIMUM in world, we fight a pukei pukei so that the slag can be researched safely by the commision without risk to the researchers so we can track zorah. once we've done that we are told we are being put in charge of the wildspire waste investigation, and there has been another track sighted there, but we need to escort researchers there. so we defend a convoy on a trek across the new map, fight off a rathion on the way, and when we reach there discover a hostile and territorial barroth we need to kill. while the research ocurs after our hunt we meet some dude who just says "see you in the finalie" and fuck off (this beat is easily the low of the game's story for me). then we find out one of the researchers got seperated from the convoy and needs rescuing. on our way to find him, we discover the first hint of nergigante, and the researcher is petrified of him. a jyurotodus complicates the rescue and needs to die. after all this, we find out we've collected enough tracks to figure out that zorah is going to the great ravine, and we are about to pull a massive operation. the plans are layed out for us, but the anjanath that WE'VE SEEN AND HAD INTERUPT OUR HUNTS ON MULTIPLE OCASIONS BY THIS POINT is concerning the researchers because he might interupt things and we don't want to fight on 2 fronts (which is totally believable because we've seen it first hand) and we are tasked with taking it down. the botanist says before we do so, he has something in mind that might help us in the fight. he gives us the ghille mantle and insists we try out the tool against tobi as a practice run and so that he can replicate our plants in the future, so we go kill tobi. then FINALLY comes the showdown with anja, which has been built up to since before we even got our hands on a weapon, and take it down so it can't interupt the opperation. then we fight zorah, but are interupted by nergigante and must repel him. the huntsman fights it, and everyone discovers nergi has insane regenerative properties. he leaves, but its too late and zorah breaks through, disapearing once again and raising the question of why nergigante was there. this takes ONLY 6 QUESTS AT A MINIMUM and so much more happened that we care about (next segment is just my own personal take since anthony hasn't seen enough to have an opinion here) regarding the characters, just because they have names doesn't make them interesting. their whole personalities boil down to "insert anime trope here" in risebreak, which is fine when it's the side characters, but not the main cast!! bahari is like the only interesting character in the entire game. everyone else is "im a serious knight character" or "i'm the commander from world but with less to do, but its okay because i have name now" in fact, that's a GREAT example. the commander was a first fleet member, a fleet made of high spec individuals to lay the foundations for future fleets. he takes his job seriously and has a no nonsense attitude, and commands respect and loyalty to all who work under him. he also likes dragonators. this is about all we get for galleus. but the commander also raised a family in the new world and his the grandfather of the field team leader, who was born in the new world and has never been to the old. during the iceborne story, he gives control of the new base to his grandson to take control, as a learning experience and show of trust. but when help is needed he's willing to step in and take command if something seems out of his grandsons control. he also has a visable relationship and is visably more casual with other members of the first fleet compared to us or anyone else in the game. THATS SO MUCH MORE CHARACTERIZATION!!! people praise rise for naming the characters, but it doesn't matter if you don't do more than the bare minimum of CHARACTERIZING the characters
To give the credit where its due. World is the first game in the franchise that attempted to tell "direct" story, in older gen the story is just sit in the background. I still think MHW:I story as a whole is mediocore at best but hey, it probably will set a standard for 6th gen, and I also don't think story should be a main focus of MH game, if its good then its a nice bonus.
@@Bison-Storytime I DEFINITELY disagree on worlds pacing being better than sunbreak but I think that’s just a difference in what we look for in games so I won’t focus on that. but u severely underplayed admiral galleus he commands respect from is subordinates but also cares for them deeply he also used to live in the citadel which was destroyed by Malzeno and gaismagorm which immediately gives him a strong motivation and connection to the story which makes his battle against gaismagorm even more satisfying as he is literally blowing up the thing that caused him so much pain and destroyed his home he also believes that self sacrifice is foolish because of his experiences. But my biggest problem is worlds story how non important the thing we are trying to stop felt like I was never scared of the elder crossing or the stuff shara would do however gaismagorm even after it’s death caused a whole plague with the Quiro still destroying the land and the monsters there were so many cutscenes and quests showing how devastating the quiro can be on the ecosystem so they actively felt like a problem. I was actually really disappointed with how little shara felt like part of the story like after we killed velkhana the sky turned red and I was hype but then we have to look for tracks which is super lame.

15:24 watching this really reminds me of the 1st tech demo they've shown for World. In that demo Anjanath tracked the hunter the whole way through the map. I can see the possibility of that supposedly being a bigger part of the game than it is now.
I'm surprisingly got used to World after Rise
Mostly because I'm a Switch Axe main and my builds mostly focused on Evade Extenders and Evade Window so I use Dodge more often than Wirebugs.
don't forget, rise was also made during the pandemic too so that unfortunately hurt how well it coulda really been, i mean look at how awesome Sunbreak was.
absolutely!! and its perfectly understandable how rise could have suffered from that, and I do think its a good game overall too. however, having a valid reason for why a game has problems does not change the fact that the game has problems, and in my own personal opinion, more problems than world
to me, thats a similar argument to saying that astro boy or dragonball are must see anime simply because they are influential, when they are FAR from perfect shows that don't hold up super well to todays standards
and while I do think sunbreak was a VAST improvement to rise by an exponential margin, I still have issues with it that prevent me from enjoying it as much as even base world
@@Bison-Storytime I wish I could enjoy world as much as rise.
By contrast, the maps in world are much more congested and close quarters, and there are cool shortcuts EVERYWHERE, and they are full of endemic life going about their day and are fun to look at

A quest in World takes about the same amount of time it does in Rise, it just comes down to player skill and understanding.

Hello fellow Monster hunter
how do you do, fellow hunter
Im doing great, and you?
The game has better I-frame so you could Matrix most of the monsters
The base i-frames in Rise are pretty small but with EW5, iirc they aren't too far behind World's. The main issue then comes from how many attacks have long active frames, you can i-frame an attack when it gets its hurtbox, but still get hit after your i-frames end simply because the attack lingers longer
@@adhdasdfroflxd123 and most double attack moves from world only apply 1 when you dodge the first like Narga tail spin

thank you so much!! the next in this series will take a bit to come out as i wanna cover the rest of low rank and we've gotten distracted with side quests and testing new weapons, but I have a challenge run video of world ive been working on for the past month that should be ready this week
"MH: Rise pro" 😂
Now try Freedom Unite or generation ultimate or even 4 ultimate.
I've actually done all those except freedom unite. I'm a hardcore longtime fan. Anthony is the new one. In that regard it's almost a ragegamingvideos pro and noob dynamic 😂

Combining Monster hunters difficulty, my being 10 years old, and the wiis TERRIBLE control system, I sucked and gave up at lagiacrus. Sorry bro, but rise almost plays itself
They tried some stuff with rise, some of it worked, some of it didn't, but it turned out a decent game (not as good as world, but still good) and especially as the portable title it's SUPPOSED to be more experimental
Wilds is clearly taking more inspiration from world than rise, which I prefer, but I don't want world 2 and I'm going to embrace all the new stuff wilds is going to bring, regardless of if it works or not!
No. Iceborne has more problems than Sunbreak
They need to take the best of both cause both have their upsides and downsides, if u can't see the faults then you're delulu
worst take ever but ok
World 2 should not happen if I'm being honest
Wyvern riding to me is worse than any individual issue world has with it's combat
Also rise has an issue where every weapon felt samey since they slapped counters on all of them, and hunting horn (my main) was absolutely GUTTED
I will agree however that it was nice having more aerial options than ever, and the customization was nice to have
@@Bison-Storytime wyvern riding is garbage and has to go i agree.
Tldr:
-no wyvern riding
-not a counter for every weapontype and more skill / resource management to use it
- reverse HH
- a better, more immersive and nerfed solution to wirebugs. Or compleatly remove it maybe
@@uSil031 scrolls were indeed awesome. Loved that mechanic
The speed is def a personal preference. Rise felt smooth and fast, but lacked a lot of impact on its hits and I never felt satisfied doing big hits
The old games have A TON OF IMPACT when you hit things, but it's too far in the other direction where it's obviously clunky and not in a good way
For me personally world is a happy medium where combat feels smooth and fluid, but there's still a ton of weight and impact behind hits, it feels kinda similar to elden ring to me in regards to speed to weight ratio
I always do say however that except for wyvern riding and weapon imbalance and having too many counters, the raw mechanical combat of rise is the thing it really has going for it.
Definitely disagree on the story part worlds story is boring rise and specifically sunbreaks story was actually fantastic because of how enjoyable the characters were like Galleus, Fiyo, and Bahari
yo honestly, i might use this as a video script. i wasn't planning on writing anything this long, but once i had the idea partway through of using this as a script i just kept going and it got really long lol. sorry in advance and i understand if you dont wanna read all this XD
I'm running on the assumption this was intended to be a reply to my reply in the pinned comment and this whole comment is running off that assumption. I like replying and discussing stuff like this and find it entertaining and would like to provide my counterargument
I get that some people like the sunbreak story, though me and anthony have quite a different perspective on it
firstly, we can all agree that the base rise story sucked dick right? at least in comparison to world, iceborne, and sunbreak. like i don't have to elaborate on that and can spend my time talking about the sunbreak expansion? great thanks
so yes, the sunbreak expansion storyline is A HUUUUUUGGGEE improvement over the base game, especially with more cutscenes and direct clear actions leading from one beat to the other, and there are a lot more characters too. however, I have 2 major issues with the story in sunbreak(i can't speak for anthony in regards to comparing it to world as he hasn't completed world yet, but we HAVE talked about his thoughts on the sunbreak story together and his ideas on some of its shortcomings)
world's story followed the mystery of the elder crossing and after the zorah incident and became the much bigger mystery of what was DIFFERENT about this elder crossing and what caused zorah to abandon the vale and caused nergigante to migrate to the recess
iceborne was solving the mystery of the legiana migration, and became a much bigger mystery related to why monsters were migrating across the continent as a whole, and what caused velkhana's aggitation.
sunbreak's story followed the mystery of the crater and how malzeno could have possibly made it, as well as it's relation to qurio and how they effect monsters.
on paper, the quality of these storyline's are all pretty comparable in quality and plot twists, as well as an evolving mystery based on the MH univers's speculative ecology. but just because the story itself is good doesn't necessarily mean it's been presented well, and I think the first big issue has to do with the key quest system.
1. Key quests
I know the key quest system has been in pretty much every single monster hunter game EXCEPT for world, and a lot of the older monster hunter games aren't negatively effected by it, but I think it lends itself poorly to telling the stories that the 5th gen games have tried to go for, because it restricts the story to only having 1 storybeat every 4-6 key quests, and only having a quarter as many storybeats in a given story and absolutely KILLS the pace. the cutscens after the first urgent quest with crabby boy where you get ambushed by lunagaron was a genuine highlight of our sunbreak playthrough. it was more storytelling than we got in the entirety of the base game practically. however, those urgent quest cutscenes started losing A LOT of meaning when they are followed by 4 keyquests of monster's we've already killed before we can reach the next storybeat. by contrast, base world was EXCEPTIONALLY good at telling it's story and was mostly marred by a lack of quality of life on SECOND PLAYTHROUGHS due to a lack of skippable cutscenes because they had a set of campaign quests that you could do consecutively, and go farm optional quests as you saw fit. they also felt better to do since you only did a quest when you WANTED to do it. rise had a issue where you did the dango sidequests, farmed out the gear you wanted, got all ready for the next urgent quest, and... oops, looks like you have to kill 3 more unrelated monsters as homework and turn it in before you're allowed to progress the story
world also had you kill most of the cast of the game in a similar way, taking on most of the 3 stars before you get to the 4 stars, ect. however it didn't FEEL like homework because they were directly incorporated INTO the story. sunbreak definetely had it better than rise just due to having storybeats be halfway through each set of keyquests instead of doing all of them at once before you get one, but it still suffers.
for example lets compare the 3 and 4 star questline of world (and not even the coral highland and rotten vale parts of 4, just until zorah because i am going easy on rise) to one of the most praised questlines of rise, the 4,5 and 6 star part of sunbreak.
in sunbreak, you go to hunt a lunagaron because... its in the way. you kill it, and on your way back are ambushed by malzeno. the qurio absorb blood from the lunagaron, and fiorane fights malzeno. she gets stabbed and sustains a serious injury we need a doctor to fix. then we do 3 key quests to kill time, then we find the doctor. then we do 3 key quests to kill time, then bahari did some research on the qurio and figured out where malzeno is, fiorane is better, and we go kill malzeno. then we realize we're missing something about the qurio and need to keep researching it. so we do 3 key quests to kill time, then we have to kill shigaru magala... because he's there. then we do 3 more key quests and get to THE SINGLE BEST QUEST IN THE ENTIRE STORY, where the map is devoid of life and we fight a jacked lunagaron again surounded by no plant or endemic life, and a whole bunch of dead large monsters. (this is my and anthony's favorite part of the game and we wish more quests changed up the formula or had us do something other than just hunt a monster. he also specifically said he wished there was more enviromental interaction throughout the rest of the game so that the difference could be seen more starkly). then we witness the qurio acting strangely and gathering around gaismagorm, who is now out of hiding because we killed his rival malzeno, and we go and kill him. this takes roughly 15 quests AT A MINIMUM
in world, we fight a pukei pukei so that the slag can be researched safely by the commision without risk to the researchers so we can track zorah. once we've done that we are told we are being put in charge of the wildspire waste investigation, and there has been another track sighted there, but we need to escort researchers there. so we defend a convoy on a trek across the new map, fight off a rathion on the way, and when we reach there discover a hostile and territorial barroth we need to kill. while the research ocurs after our hunt we meet some dude who just says "see you in the finalie" and fuck off (this beat is easily the low of the game's story for me). then we find out one of the researchers got seperated from the convoy and needs rescuing. on our way to find him, we discover the first hint of nergigante, and the researcher is petrified of him. a jyurotodus complicates the rescue and needs to die. after all this, we find out we've collected enough tracks to figure out that zorah is going to the great ravine, and we are about to pull a massive operation. the plans are layed out for us, but the anjanath that WE'VE SEEN AND HAD INTERUPT OUR HUNTS ON MULTIPLE OCASIONS BY THIS POINT is concerning the researchers because he might interupt things and we don't want to fight on 2 fronts (which is totally believable because we've seen it first hand) and we are tasked with taking it down. the botanist says before we do so, he has something in mind that might help us in the fight. he gives us the ghille mantle and insists we try out the tool against tobi as a practice run and so that he can replicate our plants in the future, so we go kill tobi. then FINALLY comes the showdown with anja, which has been built up to since before we even got our hands on a weapon, and take it down so it can't interupt the opperation. then we fight zorah, but are interupted by nergigante and must repel him. the huntsman fights it, and everyone discovers nergi has insane regenerative properties. he leaves, but its too late and zorah breaks through, disapearing once again and raising the question of why nergigante was there. this takes ONLY 6 QUESTS AT A MINIMUM and so much more happened that we care about
(next segment is just my own personal take since anthony hasn't seen enough to have an opinion here)
regarding the characters, just because they have names doesn't make them interesting. their whole personalities boil down to "insert anime trope here" in risebreak, which is fine when it's the side characters, but not the main cast!! bahari is like the only interesting character in the entire game. everyone else is "im a serious knight character" or "i'm the commander from world but with less to do, but its okay because i have name now"
in fact, that's a GREAT example. the commander was a first fleet member, a fleet made of high spec individuals to lay the foundations for future fleets. he takes his job seriously and has a no nonsense attitude, and commands respect and loyalty to all who work under him. he also likes dragonators. this is about all we get for galleus. but the commander also raised a family in the new world and his the grandfather of the field team leader, who was born in the new world and has never been to the old. during the iceborne story, he gives control of the new base to his grandson to take control, as a learning experience and show of trust. but when help is needed he's willing to step in and take command if something seems out of his grandsons control. he also has a visable relationship and is visably more casual with other members of the first fleet compared to us or anyone else in the game.
@@NaiHmee 4U was the first game that gave mh a real story
@@Colton42-d7b4U had a really good story that focussed on the hunter himself. The idea of a rival that kept coming back, always having that rival messing something up (frenzied monsters and such) not to mention it included some decent side stories as well. Like the commander vs Kushala Daora, or dalamadur, plus it had fatalis so big W.
I hate to be that guy, but if rise if your first, you're not a pro.
If you hate to be that guy, then don't be that guy
@@Bison-Storytime someone's gotta do it, and be the hated person. :/
@@eddieb1995 why?
@@Bison-Storytime someone would eventually. Lol figured I'd take the hit.
I'm surprisingly got used to World after Rise
Mostly because I'm a Switch Axe main and my builds mostly focused on Evade Extenders and Evade Window so I use Dodge more often than Wirebugs.
