ill never forget thos words bro..gonna get that quote tatted on me. i be tryna live in nostolgia, espcially from 10 plus years ago..its so easy to pick up where i left off and go back. but its empty..its just me there.. and everyone else is in 2024..takes the fun out and adds a level of fear and paranoia
if anyone remembers some of those old ~2014 era modpacks for minecraft, some of them had at least 5 mods that added tons of empty structures, especially over and near water. there was one structure mod that added tons of things like hot air balloons and pirate ships and huge vacuous cathedral like buildings with no mobs set to spawn on them or anything, they were always empty with maybe some chests in them. It was a landscape filled with basically empty buildings that gave me a feeling that i have not found anywhere else.
The way I get my liminal feeling is that I make sure that almost everything I build has to NOT make sense in some way or another. Maybe a shop has a hidden secret that leads to some underground tunnels, maybe there's a catwalk that leads to nowhere, maybe some stairs lead up to a massive room that houses only one chest. Heck, even my house looks like something straight out of Hello Neighbour. You have no idea how much I smile when I'm in Discord with friends and they ask me what the hell I was thinking when making whatever. I rarely am able to achieve that LIMINAL feeling with any of my builds, but I definitely do think that I get some kind of fun feeling whenever I decide to add things to a build that just don't make sense or have no purpose being there.
there are (imo) 6 reasons as to why older versions of minecraft had a strong sense of dread and comfort: >thicker fog >crispy textures >slower/calmer gameplay >hard to find to non-existent friendly NPCs >shared footstep sounds for every mob >less mobs and less blocks to work with bring those back to current versions and i swear people will get that old feeling of liminality and uneasy comfort as of before
Liminal space is like being a kid and looking over at your closet and you can see everything but that one dark corner of it with a silhouette of a shirt or maybe something else.. that’s in there
When all you want to do is spin up that 2011 minecraft world you made with your friends but they all tell you they are exhausted from work and kids so you wander around reminiscing looking at all the 13 year old builds alone :(
My main world is a world of endless snow forests, with a few spooky creatures stalking me from the trees, I have a nice cabin, farm, and watchtower, my cabin is the only source of warmth in the entire world.
As soon as libets delay plays i know this will be good. And all you want to do is get back there omg. The caretaker is fire. Too bad they ended so fast.
Liminality is another thing old Minecraft excelled at and newer Minecraft kind of ruined. The addition of villagers in the Official Release did already destroy some of the loneliness and liminality of the game, but villages were still much rarer than today, and you can argue villagers were much less lively than they are now, and still made the player feel a little lonely. The old Minecraft world (before Release 1.7's terrain overhaul) was very simplistic and somewhat barebones, and in that simplicity and isolation (for the most part, villages exist lol), the world felt liminal. Like this world used to have inhabitants, the ones who built all these temples and structures scattered about, but they are long-gone. The world is abandoned, you are the only one left to build in it. There was obviously once a civilization of builders here, but they are lost to time, and the world is now an empty canvas. 1.6.4 added witches, which loosened up the loneliness a TAD BIT more. 1.7 was fine but it shook Minecraft's simplistic world with more variety and biomes and stuff. 1.8 added sentient fish beings who live in underwater temples, although admittedly eerie. 1.9 added weird sentient clam creatures that live in End cities. 1.11 started to destroy the liminality more with Illagers, evil villagers who live in large mansions in the dark forests of the world. 1.14 fucked it up more with an expanded role the Illagers play, an evil and powerful fascist force who conduct active raids on villages; and villagers were given much more personality and life. 1.16 added normal piglins to the Nether, a race of pig people who LOVE gold. Don't forget all the cutesy, lively animals they have added in more recent versions.
I really enjoyed this video and your analysis of the liminality of Minecraft. I agree that the game has a unique aesthetic and atmosphere that can evoke nostalgia, curiosity, and sometimes fear. I think Minecraft is a great example of how a simple game can have a profound impact on our emotions and imagination. Thank you for making this video and sharing your thoughts.
So, I was kinda not familiar with the liminal spaces, but I was at the same time. I don't know how to explain. Since I'm not english native, there is not a lot of explanation in my language for "liminal spaces". I've heard some french youtubers talking about it but very quickly. You kinda explained in 8 mins what I couldn't understand for 2 years. Great video. Thanks!
I was playing a nostalgic minecraft remake, infdev ver, and I never said the word "Minecraft" the whole time, I go on my fyp, right here, and the rest of my fyp is all nostalgic Minecraft, I got chills down my spine when I saw this.
I wish I could go back in the past, back in Minecraft 2015 when I played first, but its lonely there, it's the past, no one will have open arms waiting for me, it's scary, s scary concept.
Love this video and the PS1 minecraft video! I've been wanting to make a video or videos playing minecraft horror but never really found any packs or mods that captured that particular liminal feeling i was looking to play in. I feel like it was because they all seemed so modern, so the point of liminality being tied to nostalgia really makes sense to me. And the PS1 mod being different enough to immerse you in gameplay while capturing that nostalgia and eerie feeling is perfect. I'm excited to play it, and I'm looking forward to more of your videos! The way you express your thoughts is nice to listen to!
I can’t play minecraft. I have tried but it’s just too nostalgic for me. Too much have changed, and i don’t just mean ”we grew up” i mean ”shit turned from ok to real fucking bad”. It’s just really surreal and i don’t know what to do with it. And then it’s just scary af
Wow, I just watched this and your other PS1 Minecraft video and I must say - stellar work!! 🙌🏻 keep doing what you’re doing cause this shit is GOOD! Would love to see you potentially explore future liminal horror Minecraft mods like the last video, or just more Minecraft and liminal videos in general - the vibes your videos bring are just something else and I love it 👌🏻❤️
Thank you sm I appreciate the support🙏 And the next few videos I'm going to post are going to be a bit different but that's because I need to use some footage to clear some space up then after that ill make more Minecraft related content
Very nice video. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that so many of these types of videos are popping up. It’s a very universal experience we have with this game.
i would actually disagree. yes there are things in game back in the day and communities with shared experiences and generally, most people who played minecraft in the golden age feel a certain way about it, but i personally think that the thoughts and feelings a game like minecraft gives mixes with the old liminal space feeling to give everyone a unique feeling. or im just high.
You can go back to the past, but nobody is there

Liminality is just such a beautiful concept
I know I’m starting to wish I would have went a little more in depth on the concept

Dude I remember getting this vibe a few times in crazycraft back in the day
you’ve unlocked a memory for me that was locked deep in my subconscious. these always gave me the weird feeling that I was not supposed to be there
Woah, yeah I remember that. That mod is still in RLCraft I think, which I used to play a lot. Definitely a vibe.
What mods exactly?
@@1-UP it looks like the exact mod i may be referring to is AtomicStryker's ruins mod.

Shared footsteps with mobs used to be trippy always thought someone was around me😂 and I might make a vid on older Minecraft versions👀
Honestly just playing with the render distance lowered and resolution lowered really makes a huge difference
There is this sort of vibe that your videos invigorate that i cant shake off. Thank you for making these!
Your welcome that's why I make them🙏

Bro if you keep it up with these awesome videos I’m gonna get back into Minecraft.
Bro, u got mad potential, came here from ur MCSX video. keep It up
I will thanks for the appreciation I’ll try to make next video even better👍
I remember booting up my xbox 360 playing the old version of xbox minecraft and exploring the all the worlds i created and the feeling was surreal
I know Xbox 360 version def still had that old Minecraft vibe
I have a feeling of "life was just here, but it left" when seeing old abandoned Minecraft servers/builds
