    This game features what has to be the most hilarious item description ever. In your travels, you come across a Sharga outhouse. One that is still in use. The item you can collect here is described as "A piece of... why did I pick this up?"

    we're actually in the "Thanks To" credits of this game!

    Brutal game... One of my all-time favorites. They certainly expected you to get lost in it, fail, struggle for a long time and maybe figure it out bit by bit. I used to go to Borders (about 20 years ago) and check out the strategy guide when I was stuck, since I first played this game when I was about 10. That secret dagger would've helped me a lot back then - I only learned that secret years later. Without it, the game is very tough. I would add that you need to save on your own (and you better do that often), as the game doesn't save for you. I can't count the times I went levels without saving, only to get killed by something like the two-headed giant that kills you in one hit if you wake it up. There were statues that beat the crap out of you if you tried to take advantage of their kindness. I believe there might've even been ways to totally screw up the game and have to start over. So, you definitely want to save regularly and even keep a few save files going. You had to try to walk through every wall at some point and there were tons of secret compartments in the walls you had to look for, even if it meant going down a long hallway and looking at each section of the walls on each side. Zelda NES was a bit like that - bombing every wall. You also wanted to punch every pile of rubble, furniture and whatever you could break to see if there were items in them. You'd also need to scan the entire screen with your cursor in areas like the sewer or in rooms that were just one space, as you couldn't see everything that might be there (scan from outside the doorway). Also, you can quickly scroll through inventory using PG UP/DN. There were some other quick keys to get right to your current map back in the magic book and so on. The game's soundtrack is brilliant - I still listen to it all the time! A lot of the game was tense and creepy, but there was some good humor to it as well, especially in the Fairy Realm, which some players miss entirely, as it is possible to skip this section, which would be sad... There were strange things you could do to level up, like striking the forge and something else in the dwarven realm (I think the flint stone). The magic spells were often confusing and you'd want to write a note next to the runes as you went, so you'd have an easier time figuring out exactly what each spell did - some were difficult to figure out - you'd need to check other parts of the magic book to see what effects they had on Drake and his party. I loved the characters and voiceover work. There were some really cool characters that joined the party like Sparkle and Enigma. I know there's a ton I'm missing, but hopefully you'll figure it out - there are lots of difficult puzzles that would require a lot of patience and critical thinking, but there are lots of guides at your fingertips on the net, unlike when this game was made. What a great game! I give it my top recommendation. It's still fun to play. If you have some patience and want to play a real classic, try this one and have some patience to get through it a bit. You’ll love being lost in the Stonekeep dungeon!

    • @Skysmeller1
      @Skysmeller1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I got this game in the 90s I played it a ton. This was before social media when people had longer attention spans and more patience. The game was so tough but very rewarding when you figured things out. I used to think the graphics were really impressive back in the day.

    • @ctbritva3623
      @ctbritva3623 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Skysmeller1 cheers! Yes, the graphics were quite impressive for the time - especially since I was 10 when it released and we didn’t have many games. The games we had were very special to me and they weren’t easy. I wasn’t able to play them as much as I wanted to either. Live-action in games was big then, but of course makes the games look dated today. It’s still very much worth playing. The atmosphere is rich, the music is awesome and the game is just a lot of fun. If anyone hasn’t heard the soundtrack through the Roland Sound Canvas... oh my! With so much time being spent at home these days, it’s a great time to play a game like Stonekeep. I hope everyone gives it a try. It’s a damn shame Stonekeep II was canceled. It would have been released around 2001 when the games being made were just awesome. This is after Interplay released Fallout amd its sequel of course. Just consider what Stonekeep II could have been... some say there are bits of its development in Fallout 3... The “Bones of the Ancestors” game is NOT Stonekeep II. As the video said, and like you mentioned, the game requires patience and there’s a lot that’s not clear, which you’ll have to figure out through a lot of trouble! Good luck to anyone who has never played a game like this - it’ll be a real challenge if you play it without any sort of guides. I recommend going in without any help and struggling through it. It’ll be the most rewarding that way. It’s meant to get you thinking and trying to find a way through the labyrinth. They didn’t make games like this to be easy! Enjoy it.

      This was a time when dungeon crawler RPGs were the big thing, now this style of game does not even exist anymore. Twenty five years ago this was one of the best if not the best RPG around. It won PC game of the year in 1996. But sure compared to the thousands of games after this is an easy game to pick on for good reason. I’m gonna pick up a copy soon to enjoy some nostalgia again.

    Oh man so many memories! I remember having the exact same reaction the first time I went to the sewers and encountered that tentacle monster! I was 9 or 10 at that time, and I was so scared that I actually played the game for hours on just the first 2 levels as I was too scared to go to the sewers again. Only when I got older I got the courage to go deeper in the dungeon, tho falling into that pit with multiple tentacle monsters was terrifying even as a teen. What an amazing piece of nostalgia.

    Way to go, man... Highly enjoyable review, I seriously enjoyed it!
    Nintendo Game Boy (Part 1/2) - Sam The English Gamer!
    Sorry to interrupt, but I've been working on a series about video games for the past few weeks and I've finally gotten around to uploading the first episode... At least, the first part anyways. Please, feedback would be appreciated!

      Sherif710 Well... What else am I supposed to do with my content? It's not mandatory to watch or anything like that. I did give my quick two-cents about the video and just wanted to quickly show what I've been doing myself and honestly, it really was hard work.
      Maybe SpaceHamster himself was in a similar position a few years ago; making a new series about gaming and trying to spread the word as much as possible...

      ***** If you're a good youtube channel, the views and subs will come to you. Asking for them on another person's video gets you nothing, trust me. Speaking from experience here.

    • @SamTheEnglishGamer
      @SamTheEnglishGamer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sherif710 Interesting advice. I think I'm in good shape so far since Part 1 of the first episode has impressed a lot of people who have seen it and... I kid you not, a mention by Game Theory! Seriously, a quick look at their Facebook page and you'll see one post talking about videos related to the history of gaming and they actually use my video as an example of a video done well and since then, I've seen a good increase in views, likes, comments and whatnot - Not bad for someone who's just begun a series...

    As a little nostalgia bomb, the player character is voiced by Tony Oliver, aka Rick Hunter from Robotech... which reaaally sounds like him at times in-game

    I just realized that he (SpaceHamster, I guess someone might think I was talking abou the protagonist of the game) looks like my old Spanish teacher. He was the best teacher I had in the 7th grade, and we even hired him for tutoring later.

    This game isn't quite as hard as Space Hamster makes it out to be. I rarely found myself lost, though marking healing was useful and important. The abundance of secrets were a great part of the game- it's what gave it substance (though that knife can only be found early on, if you go back it's gone- it's meant to be the 'easy mode' of the game). And you don't have to do that much running back with the magic if you... you know, use all your staves you find. Some are not as good as others, but they all hold a charge and can come right along with you.There is also a spot or two where you can spam your weapons against an object to rank yourself up in the use of them. In the dwarven area if I recall.

    Great review, this game is tough and a bit cryptic. I bought this game in the late 90s at Best Buy. It was game of the year in 95. Sure it’s dated but in the mid 90s this took dungeon crawling to a whole other level.

    I'm sorry SpaceHamster, I wasn't subscribed before, but after DYKG liked the video, I gasped, subscribed, liked, and faorited the video the second I saw it. Stonekeep was my favorite game, I loved playing it back in 1996 and I still have the old CD and Strategy Guide.(And the copy from GoodOldGames)
    I have literally wrecked this game, able to max out ALL stats just within the first 2 Dungeon Levels.(Though that breaks mostly the challenge aspect) Usually now, I just max out Shield on an ant because I feel its VERY useful throughout the game.
