TH-cam has thousands of auto repair videos, and this video is the best step by step, clear visual, well spoken (especially how to apply the gasket), that I've seen. Getting ready to change out starter now on my TC, thanks.
Thank you for your video, basically very good. Nice lighting and explanation as you went along. I read some of the other comments and have to agree for safety sake that after you jacked up the car that you should use Jack stands and not rely solely on the hydraulic Jack. Other wise a great video.
I always use a jack stand! My hydraulic jack slowly goes down, so it's no good for keeping the vehicle up. I'll have to rewatch this video to see why I didn't this time. I assume I did.
Great video. This was basically the same for my 2010 Dodge caravan. I was able to work from above and below the van without jacking it up. It was tight from below but doable. My two cents, when putting the starter back on, put the bolts thru the motor mounts first and slip that metal shim over them, it's easier than trying to keep that shim on the starter and put it into place without covering the threading openings for bolts. Thanks for the video, saved me a ton of money
I have to agree with all the positive comments; your lighting and attention to detail is commendable. Your calm demeanor is very welcome particulary in my case; I'm studying your video because despite ample pb overnite saturation the head of the lower bolt sheared off. I'm to the point where removing enough material from starter to isolate bolt or bolt small portion of starter, in order to remove inaccessible portion of lower bolt in tranaxle housing. Ironicall the upper bolt was fairly easy, as was the bottom. By the way I agree with disconnecting both battery terminals. Thanks for the great video video of this freskishly clean rig.
Thanks for your reply, I was surprised to come up empty regarding a same or similar circumstance. I put my hammer-drill with a masonry bit to it, I removed enough material, I thought sufficent. Apparently not the case, I jacked a paver up to it to persuade, decided to leave it for tomorrow Thank you..

Dude thank you, I used this to replace starter. worked well. I found that using a ratcheted wrench helped alot on the top bolt and would like to have seen it on cam. this was a clear helpful vid. thanks, thanks thanks. Mark
Thanks. Believe it or not, it's super easy to clean an engine. When the engine is cold, turn it off, open the hood, and spray everything with a garden hose. Literally. It has never hurt any engine I've done that to and it makes it a lot nicer to work on. You can start the engine to back it out of the garage or whatever. You just don't want it too hot or you risk warping metal pieces when you cool it quickly with the water.
thanks for the video. that's a tight fit and I'll wait until it's warmer outside. Right now tapping on the solenoid gets it unstuck and it's sticking about every 3 or 4 weeks. Hopefully it can wait until I can clean out my garage or until it warms up.
Been having the same issues with our 2010 town and country. Replaced battery even the worked on the fuel pump relay. Also replaced the alternator. Next step the starter. Question... did that fix your issue?
Unfortunately, it did not. I ended up just buying a really good battery and hoping for the best. We ended up replacing the van because of transmission issues.
Great video, after the starter was replaced, did you still have a battery drain issue? I have a VW Routan (same as a town and country) and the battery keeps draining. I've replaced the battery and the alternator too. The van clicks once on occasion when trying to start. Single click. Thanks!
Ryan Dunaway Exact symptoms here with my Routan, I saw in another video where they explained that that “one click” was a sign of a bad starter not having the fly wheel spin. I think I’m going to replace the starter, did you end up replacing yours?
@@trenttreadway1266 yes I did. I'm slightly ashamed to say that i found a $60 new starter on EBay. I replaced it 3 weeks ago and I haven't had a issue since. No single clicks and no more battery drainage. The new starter may not last the 104k miles the original did but if I get 50k out of it, I'll be happy.
Sorry for the late response. I didn't get any notifications about these comments. I never did figure out the battery drain. The transmission eventually died and we had to replace the van. The new van doesn't have the same drain issue yet (knock on wood).
I don't remember the starter helping much. I think the battery was just under-provisioned for that van. We replaced the van for other reasons and the newer model has a better battery in it.
We replaced this van around 1.5 years ago because of transmission issues, but I think it was the 3.8L.

i would liked to see a little more pre analysis into one click means raplace the starter. and how not to spend money on the TIMP TIPEM TOTAL INTIGRATED POWER MODUDULE . BUT love you for this vid .
Of the video's I've found for 1010 T&C, this most resembles mine, EXCEPT my starter is off now, but wedged in place. There is almost no room to pull it out. Anyone have any advise? I have the 4.0L V6
@@CarlosGonzalez-nu8ec Hi Carlos. My notification settings have been wrong this whole time. Sorry for the very delayed response. Did you ever get this figured out? I hope so! You're right. There's barely any room.
Question for you. Great video by the way. Is it possible that the starter had been replaced previously and whoever put it in our that plate on backwards and couldn't get the 3rd bolt to go in because the holes don't line up? Also, did this fix your issue?
It was the original starter, so I doubt it. I never did fix the issue. The transmission ended up dying and we replaced the whole van. ($9K for a transmission in a van that was worth $8K.)
I don't know exactly, but not very many. We had battery problems with it from the start. We had to replace the battery every 2.5 - 3 years. They should have lasted at least 5. I wasn't replacing the starter because it was faulty. I was just trying to find the electrical problem. It turned out the starter was fine.
Be thankful you don't own a 2011 or newer model, because it's nowhere near as simple as that to replace the starter on the 2011 and up models. I have a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan and the starter was above the motor mount and the crossmember support tucked tightly between the transmission and catalytic converter where there's almost no space to undue the nut that's securing the connectors. Before you can get to the starter, you need to remove the crossmember support and the motor mount. The hardest part for me was trying to get the nut that secures the wires to the starter properly tightened. The amount of cuts I got before I finally got it on right was insane. It was a bloody nightmare, especially without high end tools.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. That sucks. I've since sold that minivan and now own a 2019. I guess I'll be going through something similar some day. Good times...
If you have a caravan or town n Country newer than 2010 then there will be the exhaust on the way. On the 2006-2010, the exhaust is on the other side so it does not get on the way.
I'm really sorry, guys, for my lack of replies! My notification settings were wrong. I just fixed them. Did you ever get this figured out? Again, very sorry!

What sizes wrench is needed?
Maybe if you can post that in the description it would help a lot as well.
