That is a good question. No, place the bamboo when the water is NOT hot (right after you pour water into the skillet), and then bring water to a boil. Once it starts boiling, then reduce the flame to low and continue to cook until you've reached your total steaming time you need.
Better to use a pot with a rim extender for the steamer instead of using a skillet to steam your food and damage the bottom of the bamboo basket. It is surprising to me that the video says to use a skillet or wok.... using a shallow skillet or deeper wok means your bamboo basket will be sitting IN the water when it should be sitting ABOVE the water which is what the rim extender does.... elevates the basket out of the water. Using a pot will give you plenty of room for water to fully cook your food without evaporating and scorch your bamboo basket or skillet/wok.. Using the rim extender will keep your bamboo basket stable so it does not tip over, off the pot. The rim extender can be purchased separately or as part of the set...bamboo baskets, lid and rim extender. Enjoy using your steamer... it is better than the microwave for re-heating leftovers!

Also, you keep any nice juices that come from the fish. I got some nice little stoneware containers from the pound shop which are very cheap and totally heatproof

I also used the bottom to reheat chicken. It was better than the microwave that's for sure. Thank you for turning me on to bamboo steaming. I also really love the music in this video. One question though... Is it normal for the water to turn green?
Hello...Glad you got sold on the bamboo steamer as it is a very healthy way to cook. I am happy that I was able to convince you. Did the water turn green while you were cooking the veggies or chicken? I think it would be from the veggies...

Hi and thank you so much for making this video! Quick question: do you have any recommendations for a good bamboo steamer or brand of bamboo steamers? It seems like a lot of them have not so great reviews online, and as a beginner I'd like to get one that will last a long time
that is a very good question. I do not know the brands cause I've had my steamer for a long time. Perhaps not get the cheapest one, nor the most expensive one. I paid like $20 for mine and it has lasted awhile.

How much water to use for steaming for 15- 10:37 30 mins in a bamboo steamer. Put food only after the water boil I assume? Thank you.

I bought that,..came right here for tips, and tricks,..love the steamed food, and love your channel thank you for your upload, and hard work

Is there something I should do to the steamer before first use?
wash it if it's dirty. Otherwise, just follow my directions

Straight forward video, the only thing however is, could you turn the music down? I found it distracting when listening to the instructions
yes, I understand and will lower music with future videos!
thanks you
SSabo33, I had a similar problem, the music made me want to take off all my clothes and dance an exotic dance until my veggies were steamed! Both me and my vegetables were absolutely orgasmic. My husband loved it and now we use it everyday for breakfast and dinner! (:
Thank you Lin

I think you've made this clear but just to be sure - is it OK for the water to touch the steamer? It doesn't ruin the wood?

Is it Ok for the water to touch the bottom of the steamer?
I did see some with a metal rim on the bottom in a resturant in NYC But can't find any on line, So I mad my own using aluminum foil but over time I had to get a new steamer do to mold & I'm wondering if I should put the aluminum foil on the bottom again, & thanks for the tip on Clean it as well.
pdrummer davis Yes, it is OK as you must place the bamboo steamer in the water. Use baking paper to line the bamboo steamer. I would not use foil.
Thanks!!
