  • Silver was the region's claim to fame with the town of Silver Cliff rising to become Colorado's 3rd largest city by 1880. Trains arrived via Westcliffe Station just in time for silver production to tank, and the entire valley to become nearly abandoned. Ranching returned as the primary industry, with tourism a close second. Westcliffe is well known for having Western charm, spectacular views and recreation at the popular Lake Deweese.
*I mistakenly wrote that The Great Panic of 1893 was the conversion from Silver to Gold Standard. This is incorrect as it was actually a recession caused by excess silver and railroad debt.
Ski Lodge consists me and the rest of my family as we explore the great State of Colorado and more. Initially created to get everyone out of the house, it has turned into a vast collection of history, photography and general information. We are most active at skilodgecolorado

I worked for the forest service out of Lake Isabel in the Wet Mountains. Westcliffe and the valley were in my area of operation. The valley is one of the flyways for migratory birds and there are a lot of bird watchers that visit the valley. It's not surprising to see someone crawling in a field with their bino's.

Having recently moved to the Rosita area, I am very happy to say that Westcliffe and the Wet Mountain Valley are wonderful. It definitely deserves the high ranking you gave!

Own land in the valley. The views are spectacular; crowds and traffic are nonexistent. DeWeese Reservoir would have been worth a visit...

This sounds like my GGma's story of both Westliffe and Diepoldsau, Switzerland, where she came from.

Conquistador ski area would’ve been worth noting, if you take oak creek grade road you will see little plaques explaining the pike expedition in that area. The area draws a lot of attention through the 14ers surrounding but most hikers pass through without getting a chance to appreciate the peace of the valley. The sangres are some of the remotest mountains to explore especially in the winter, as they do not entice back country skiers either normally due to better snowpack up north.

I'm surprised to say I've never heard of Conquistador, I'll to add it to a "defunct ski resorts" list I have for future use.

Delta's definitely a black sheep as far as Colorado towns.
