Quick anecdote... I recently took a trip from Texas to Westcliffe to visit family. On my first day there, my joints started aching, I got feverish and sweaty, I had hives on the right side of my body, and most concerning was a painful and very swollen lymph node on my upper thigh. I tried to go to a walk in clinic in Westcliffe and they sent me to the ER in Salida. Granted, I didn't need a specialist, but the ER staff was amazing. The wait wasn't too long, and they got me fixed up. They gave me some antibiotics and a huge dose of steroids and I was good as new within a couple of days. They filled my prescriptions at the attached pharmacy within 15 min. So, +1 for the ER in Salida!!! lol Also, there were deer in the parking lot!
I love this anecdote, thank you for sharing! I'm glad to hear you had a great experience there. Were you able to enjoy Salida long besides the ER and pharmacy visit? Also, what part of TX? I'm from the Austin area :)
@@LivingInSalidaCO As terrible as I was feeling, I did muster the energy to drive around a bit. We drove through a few neighborhoods off the main street close to the Arkansas. We went to the Safeway, which looked like it would have all you'd expect a Safeway to have. We purchased some overpriced air in a can just in case the altitude was affecting me... lol Salida looked like it had a ton of personality. A "vibe" like you said. I think Westcliffe does too, but it's too small for me. Plus, I like the proximity to the river and skiing that Salida offers. After we left Westcliffe, we stayed in Copper Mountain. Absolutely nothing to do there other than hike or ski, but we explored Frisco and took a short trip to Breckenridge. I'd really like to explore that area more and try to buy a summer home somewhere in that area. SO pretty. The dream is something tucked back in the hills on a few acres, maybe live water?, but within a short drive to shops and dining. I'm a big fan of Austin. My sister went to UT! I'm from a small town called Lake Dallas just north of Dallas and Ft Worth, but currently, I live in the country outside Denton. I'm looking to get out of Texas ASAP. It's just too hot here. Having temps in the 70's in July was AMAZING! If I end up looking in the Salida area, I'll look you up! I'm still a few years out though so I'm just trying to narrow down areas to look in at the moment.
@@MeganRutel The older I get, the more I hate the way 100 degrees feels... And it seems like it's getting worse. Howdy, neighbor! Wouldn't it be funny if we ended up being neighbors in Colorado too!!?? 🤣🤷🏻♂️. Are you seriously looking or just in the dreaming phase? Is there any particular area you like?
@@Chris-zo5ze we are full time RVing right now because we couldn’t take Texas anymore. Lol. Each place we visit though we are looking at it through the lens of “could we live here one day?” Salida is on our list to check out this weekend.
My family has lived here since 1952 talking grandparents on down. Slater used to be a small uncrowded town. Everybody knew everybody. It wasn't a busy town. These days it's become more of a tourist attraction and everybody moving in and no not everybody does know everybody anymore. It is a beautiful place to live however the rent is very high The housing is very high. There's very limited to shopping Walmart is about the only place for a big box store where you can shop for things outside of groceries that you need. Safeway in Walmart of course sells food and then you got the hometown stores which are so ridiculous to eat you can't even afford to feed people if you're eating there on a regular basis. The county commissioners don't want to let in cheap places to eat so they can keep hometown people with high prices that you have to buy. So yes there is pros and cons. But with my family living here for the past 70 years. I think I have a pretty good idea of what salida's about. Everybody's moving in here building things people moving in trying to have real estate businesses people moving in all the time here yet there's not cheap places to eat the housing's not affordable no good places to really shop that is an expensive. So the mountains are pretty there is a ski resort there are trails and there are the art walk but you could probably walk around Salida in 30 minutes it's not all that exciting is everyone makes it out to be. It's pretty as far as the mountains. But it would be something I would think about. Being a very long time resident I'm talking all my life living here and my parents and their parents this should give you a little bit of an idea.

My great Aunt and Uncle had a ranch there when I was a kid. My great Aunt used to make cinnamon buns for a local restaurant there. I would darrt in and out of the kitchen to snitch a little dough ball from her big bowel. She, told me, you need to be careful or you’ll make yourself sick. I was a kid and didn’t pay too much attention. Of course I got sick. Learned my lesson though. Beautiful place, but it takes forever to get there.
I bought a house in downtown Salida in 2017. I guess technically before it went crazy. I love Salida and it’s super laid back feel combined with the weather. Thanks for sharing. So glad you've had a good experience so far. It's true, it can be difficult for service providers to call you back in our town. I have recently been using Chris Martin for plumbing work and he's great AND answers the phone. Would you like me to send his info?
Please don't come here expecting the natives to fund your move and ability to stay. It's VERY expensive here. Please don't come here and want us to make our small town like the big city you moved from. You can't have it both ways. We have had days where it was 30 below. Every winter is different. We are VERY windy....not just SOME. People move here and do not like the wind and end up leaving. We have built customs homes in colorado since 1997. Do your research extensively with our new building codes that have added extensive cost to the already expensive building cost. This is a tourist town. Salida loses its small town appeal in the summer. Tourist are not the same as natives so keep that in mind. We deal with a lot in the summer. And are very happy when when winter comes. If you hate internet interruptions don't come here. lol Do your research on Heart of the Rockies Hospital extensively. Most of us travel to the front range. Just being real.
Well, it definitely is not the same now as it was when I purchased here 12 years ago. Too many new builds that do not fit the character of the community. Too many people.
