It was all about pushing an agenda, it had nothing to do with this game in particular, it could've been any game where it was easy to manipulate and take pictures out of context.
Aside from explicitly featuring the sexual abuse of a minor, the game has a very obvious BDSM motif. Those things are fine if they're handled appropriately (it seems like they were) but it's not like the journalists fabricated the existence of sexual themes in the game. Inciting a moral panic is always an incredibly scummy thing to do, mind you, but I don't think it's fair to imply that the journalists are pedos. Just vultures.
The game shows themes of SA of children so they are really telling on themselves in my opinion. Who the fuck sees two primary school girls rubbing their noses together and see "erothic themes" there?
@@connerhansen2947 I agree about the sexual themes in the game but the context some of the journalists were using was gross. Media can include sexual themes but not be considered sexy. It can be used to discomfort or horrify, which is what Rule of Rose was going for. Some weirdos looked at the game and said this is going to turn people on, which is concerning if someone can see what happens in the game and come away with that interpretation.
@@connerhansen2947I get your point, but the criticisms the game received were about people saying that you as the main character get to do stuff with kids in the game wich is completely false and not even implied anywhere in the game, the sexual abuse is also not explicit, the most explicit thing you see is a girl cleaning the floor and the headmaster of the orphanage standing in front of her (wich makes it look like she's doing something to him), the journalists sound like perverts because they sexualized stuff that isn't meant to be seen that way. Think about it, what normal person sees two children rubbing their noses together as something sexual, and then writes about it expecting other people to agree?, even if they were desperately trying to smear the games reputation I feel like you need to be a very specific type of person to even be able yo interpret some of the scenes they point out as sexual, they don't even focus on the BDSM angle of things much.
Finding two kids rubbing noses as sexual says more about the ones perceiving it that way than the creators of the game and those who enjoy the game. An Eskimo kiss is the term used for rubbing noses. Mostly, it's loosely based on the Inuit tradition of something called a kunik. It's a form of affection for family members and close loved ones. Inherently - non sexual. And just a fun form of affection for someone else.
I have a suspicion that the same people wouldn't mind this gesture, even if it was explicitly romantic, if there were a girl and a boy rather than two girls.
@@ОльгаСергеева-з6х oh definitely. There's a strong and... really weird connection some of these people tend to make with the whole "homosexuality and lgbt are exposing sexual behaviours and bad for children". Which again, goes to show where their minds are at again and its just so odd.
My mom gave those all the time when I was little. We called them nose kisses. There was nothing sexual about it, I just saw it as a little fun thing we did sometimes. It was no more sexual than kissing your parents goodbye before going to school. Less so even! The people who do consider it that are idiots.
Considering the events in the game are kind of like a dream, I don't think it's that strange (in hind sight) that Jennifer faints so much. I mean, in my experience dream events cut in and out all the time, the 'fainting' is probably like the brain trying to come up with a new scene from her tattered memories. P.S. I LOVE Fatal Frame! The lore in the series is so deep and intense that I always wished I could find a deep-dive story summary for any one game, let alone the entire series. I look forward to new content!
I totally agree with your statement. As much as the fainting becomes a meme at best and annoying at worst, it does explain the "and then THIS happens!" moments within dreams. I mean, as someone who's tried to explain my wacky dreams to my boyfriend several times before, I'm like..."I remember the my random baby being able to project his coo's and babbles into my brain and me understanding him like he was speaking English...but where did the random MMO battle come from or HOW did I get there and become so OP in the first place?!" Boyfriend is like, "Babe, why do you remember these?" One of them is actually becoming a book series, so shush~ hehe!
What the hell? This game was tame compared to some of the other stuff out there. Dark and twisted, yes, but nothing pitch fork and torches worthy. Thank you for covering Rule of Rose, not just the real life controversy based on FALSE information spreading (in the age before the Internet), but also the game's story that leaves you feeling dirty, confused, sad, and haunted long after the final credits have rolled.
Rule of Rose is a tragic story about orphan children trying to navigate cruel world around them, while being left to tend to themselves, because all adults around them either uncaring or abusive. This is probably the best game when it comes to portraying children, in all their cruelty, while remaining sympathetic to their trauma and struggles. Kid there do some truly terrible thing, but they do that out of desperation and frustration. For example Diana acts inappropriately at times, only because she is targeted by a predator. Wendy did a lot of horrible things, because she loved Jenifer, but couldn’t process her love due to young age and trauma of being an orphan. So she’s jealous when Jenifer stops their little game of Prince and Princess to spend more time with her new pet Brown. Wendy probably never had any family, so for her to “loose” Jenifer must feel like the end of the world. So, generally, amazing story, well crafted, dark themes not used for shock value, but addresses with care. A ton of actually good written female characters in leading cast. I love this game. I hope it gets remaster one day. ❤
I honestly wanted this game to not get the bad reputation it got all thanks to the Italian Press. And there are talks about this game getting a remaster, and I hope it gets released on multiple consoles because I want to play this game. Edit: How ironic that brand new and sealed copies of Rule of Rose are found in an Italian warehouse when it was the Italian Press that made the game controversial. It’s like the Italian Press want the game for themselves.
Let's hope the fighting mechanics get some improvements, if it is getting remastered. As this game is the best example of "Lord of the Flies, but with girls," perhaps the game's story could be integrated into curriculums (maybe college, bit heavy for high school; although heaviness doesn't stop some teachers), and a remaster could bring the game into a more receptive spotlight.
I feel like Lord of the Flies comes to mind when I think of this game, maybe not in a sense of sexual abuse, but certainly in a sense that innocence is lost and about the dangers that await when children are left to their own devices and not given proper guidance (or none at all) from adults.
An argument could also be made for a comparison between Brown and the conch shell: non-human but very important to the characters, and destroyed during a moment of unbridled anger that marked an inability to thematically and emotionally go back. Or maybe Brown and Piggy. Anyways: yes, lots of parallels between the two.
This game was one of the first games I felt compelled to finish for the story and because I found it relatable to my experience of leaving and then returning to an elementary school. The hierarchy and trying to regain favor because kids came up with all sorts of rumors about why you moved and left them so you deal with bullying. Even from an ex best friend. Glad I still have it and the soundtrack.
Poor Rule of Rose, it got done dirty by idiots whom couldn't even do proper research. Great game and even though the combat is terrible, story makes up for it by a lot.
the best way i can say about rule of rose it does a great job leaving a important moral about coming to terms with the past and facing the clues of your past that made you the way you are as Jennifer had to face the things around her past and had to come to terms with it now knowing the hard truth

Dark fantasy, slow-burn, mythpunk-like, mystery thriller psychological horror that was, and hopefully will be, one of a kind. There have been a few videos explaining this underrated game before, not just the story but also the real-world issues surrounding it's release and review. It's always good to hear another person explain everything in record time, without backlash from the oversensitive media conglomerates!

I remember when I saw this in a shop and got curious at the peculiar cover, back when that was a thing. No swords, no sorcery, no dragons, no dungeons--just a flowers and little girls, and the outline was something unheard to me. I judged it as a "horror" game and left it, because I suck at horror games. Had I discovered this when I was older, and if it didn't handle like crap, I probably would've played it. I actually find violent video games quite therapeutic; they help me deal with my anger in a controlled and safe manner. Anger caused by others constantly trying to think for me and tell me what I'm supposed to find acceptable. Caused by the world rotting around me, thanks to the same brand of people running it into the ground as they pretend they're saving it. Censorship is evil; and I'm thankful that despite living in a religious country, there was never any enforcement body for video games.
Thank you for this. A friend did a Let's Play of this game but I couldn't get through it all because of the constant chalk sounds (I'm very sensitive) so it was a treat to have you go through the weird history of the game, the story and the explanation.
Not gonna lie, that's triggering. The fact the studio didn't even get a fair chance and they had to close down. Even if the game is good or bad, that should been the determination. Not some stupid game journalists spreading lies.
One of my favourite games, ever since when, in 2006, I saw it on the cover of a magazine, with the title "Bury the girl alive" or something and a whole article about how eerie and controversial the game was. I was 10, and I was hooked. Edit: I realised the article I read was the one you mentioned, in Panorama!!! The cover was just like I remembered! Didn't know that it was that article that triggered the whole controversy on the game. Too bad my mom threw the magazine out years ago, would love to still have it.
I hope you know how much we all love your videos! Loved this one, especially since it's for a game that usually flies under the radar :D can't wait for more

So, it's adults who refuse to utilise reading capacity is running products down in infamy... Maybe they shouldn't allow to work on such positions, anymore.
Uninformed reviews: Sexual imagery, character buried alive. Game in reality: Bulling (physical and mental), animal abuse, implied child sexual abuse, suicide, implied multiple child murder.
I am not a big gamer, but I like watching and listening to you explaining video game lore; honestly I don't know how you do to keep up and understand these stories. It's relaxing, and like you are getting a story to bed 😅😊keep up with the good work. I love your videos.
2:11 as an Italian I was almost jumpscared when I saw my language pop up out of nowhere lol. Sadly yes Italy does tend, even now sometimes, to fall into a morality argument especially with videogames where journalists and educators portray them as a sort of curse that will make children violent and stupid. The idea of videogames (and comics often) as forms of art is still not widely accepted
So I feel as though something important was overlooked. The children, even the boys, at the orphanage were in fact being sa’d but were are seeing everything through a young Jennifer’s eyes and she doesn’t know what she’s seeing so she tries to explain it the best she can. All the children can do is bully themselves as they can’t turn to any of the adults in a form of “acting out” There’s so much stuff from the game that wasn’t in this video it’s almost sad
Huh? I couldn’t find anything in the game that supported the OG comment. The only thing I found was regarding the SA of Clara, and maybe Diana, not the other children. I mention that her memories are distorted. OG commenter is just disappointed I didn’t share a theory they had.
I'm definitely looking forward to the Fatal Frame videos! I've been a fan of the series since watching Markiplier play Crimson Butterfly YEARS ago. I always enjoy your videos and your in-depth dive into the full story of horror games, so I can't wait to see more!
Your playthroughs and narrations are truly exceptional, bringing games to life in a captivating way. Your channel is a treasure trove of gaming knowledge and excitement, and I eagerly anticipate your exploration of the Project Zero/Fatal Frame series. 🤘
At its heart it is a story about trauma and abuse in a orphanage. It is this aspect pf the game that cause it to be banned in alot of countries because this subject hit way too close to many people hearts. The world dont want to discuss it too much and openly during its time of release.
I hate games like these where fighting the boss gives you the bad ending, like why does killing the bosses, aka your trauma or fear, lead to the character not coming to terms with what source of the trauma, like they straight defeated it in a boss battle, if that ain't getting you over your trauma, nothing will.
The 'moral outrage' surrounding Grand Theft Auto was completely generated by the Grand Theft Auto marketing team. It was designed to get kids to buy the game - and it worked. Read all about it in the great book 'Trust me, I'm lying" by the guy that helped do it.
I love the videos. I was wondering if you would cover the crackdown series. I just replayed Crackdown 2using backwards compat and I feel like there is a really interesting story behind what the game shows you if you findall the audio logs but its quite confusing and you are great at helping clear stuff up.
Kermit Flappy Hands for the video too!!! Ah yes! Max Payne Mythical Pull. Apparently I’ve got a lot to say: those girls doing nose kisses is so normal to me. It’s what I did with my siblings and even good friends! I think some people don’t know how children interact sometimes, and then they overreact. I have more to say, sorry guys: so I think that this game got the treatment that that old game got. The one where it’s a man and he’s a “serial k1ller”, and he has to take out people that the voices tell him. And people IRL said that it would make people violent. I think this game got the same treatment, which is wrong. Video games don’t mimic reality, just like books don’t. It’s a fantastical experience that can be troubling, but also eye opening. I hope it makes sense what I typed, I get very invested in things like this.
there is an old ds game called theresia which has the same vibe as rule of rose if you'd like to look into it dear martel came to first on mobile then was moved to the ds
I was thinking when you said you were on a hunt to play and cover rare older games, I definitely think you’ll like ObsCure and ObsCure The Aftermath. They’re not that special and the stories are that in depth, but I think you’d like them, especially if you like Resident Evil. And luckily they are on Steam now, so it’s easier to play them than they once were (though Aftermath has some bugs during boss battles, so I’d watch out with that one).
You kinda skipped over the entire scene where Amanda rubs Jennifer's bare foot over her face while begging for forgiveness which was pervy as fuck and there is no way around it
this is one of the examples of game reviews that is not taken seriously and the journalist did not even consider playing the game first. Honestly, journalists should not be allowed to review games coz they do not really take time to play the game to give some serious honest article, it even costs the jobs of the devs who created the game. Did more damage than help, should've sued the journalist as well.

She faints so much Dante Alighieri is like ‘Damn, kid, take a deep breath.’
tbh i never expected you to take a video about this game. (this game has a special place in my heart)
Loved this one, especially since it's for a game that usually flies under the radar :D can't wait for more
Please do a Sally Sadface story explained, I want someone to explain it and I just love supporting your content. Also, it seems right up your alley.
This woman cannot remain conscious for more than 5 minutes jesus christ.
I remember watching pewdiepie play this game 😭. The story confused me so much then, and now to have you doing a video on the story??? This is how people felt discovering gold huh
Thank you Gaming Harry!🙌🏾 Yet another awesome story explained.
Could you do Bad Parenting, it’s short so it might not be worth the edits, but doesn’t hurt to ask.
So, it's adults who refuse to utilise reading capacity is running products down in infamy... Maybe they shouldn't allow to work on such positions, anymore.
This kind of thing happens all the time even now.
Passing out in games to transition scenes is the same as books ending their chapters with the characters going to sleep 🤣
This feels like Haunting Ground but more psychological.
And a lot more of the main character passing out...
The trolling was savage in 1930’s.
I really hope that one day we at least get a remastered version of Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground.
Me too. So many underrated gems.
That’s more your own interpretation of events though
@@GamingHarryYT😐 you’re joking
The fact that they saw two girls together and thought "that's sexual, that's is perverted" 💀. What?
Love the video and this channel. Wish there were more like it
I personally love these types of old game story videos truly the best content please make more
Most Gaming Journalists do play games then review
then go away.
But others will make a big deal and drama out of nothing.
It’s very sad.
I'm so happy you're covering Rule of Rose! It's a very.... unique experience!
Your playthroughs and narrations are truly exceptional, bringing games to life in a captivating way. Your channel is a treasure trove of gaming knowledge and excitement, and I eagerly anticipate your exploration of the Project Zero/Fatal Frame series. 🤘
I love these videos on games like this man, thanks for all the research and the info. Definitely subbed.
Harry back at it with a top tier quality video. I was so hyped when I saw you were covering the lore behind Rule of Rose. Great work mate
Brown was the goodest boy.
Labrador retrievers/Labradors/Golden retrievers are pure in heart... And they must be protected at all cost ❤ because they are all good boys/girls
Thank you for this! I would love to see you play and explain Haunting Grounds!
Yeees, I was waiting for Fatal frame 🥰 This was also great video 😊 Will you do Forbidden siren too??
At its heart it is a story about trauma and abuse in a orphanage. It is this aspect pf the game that cause it to be banned in alot of countries because this subject hit way too close to many people hearts. The world dont want to discuss it too much and openly during its time of release.
I was just saying this a while ago.
This game looks awesome ps2 era was the best of times.
Even the lore has lore
Can you see about the game "Blood Will Tell?"
It's based off of the 1967 manga, "Dororo," which had an updated anime vision in 2019.
2:20 Yea... I don't want to see that journalists hard drive, but I bet his local equivalent of the FBI sure do.
FINALLY!!!!! I’ve been suggesting this in almost EVERY video of yours for years!!! Thanks mate! And Fatal Frame is one of my favorite series!
Uff what a great pick of a story, keep up m8!
-I must say I really love your content on these games. Made me a horror game fan.❤
Love your work!
The Italian journalist needs to have this computer drives checked.
Love your content! I hope you can do Emio or any of the other famicom detective club games!! 😊
was lit thinking of this game the other day and was wishing you had covered it!
This is a lovely birthday present! Thank you😋
I’m surprised the studio didn’t sue the Panorama. They should
Hello Gamer Henry! Game look scary.
Great retelling! you should have put a pass-out count in the corner lol
You kinda skipped over the entire scene where Amanda rubs Jennifer's bare foot over her face while begging for forgiveness which was pervy as fuck and there is no way around it
Yooooo with little nightmares 3 being annouced are you planning on covering 1 & 2?
Finally a new video, makes my day
PLEASE make videos for Remnant 2's other DLCS The Dark Horizon and Forgotten Kingdom, always enjoyed your Remnant vids!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
this is one of the examples of game reviews that is not taken seriously and the journalist did not even consider playing the game first. Honestly, journalists should not be allowed to review games coz they do not really take time to play the game to give some serious honest article, it even costs the jobs of the devs who created the game. Did more damage than help, should've sued the journalist as well.
Finally a new video to complete my week
Rule of Rose otherwise known as she passed out.
She should really get her head checked out, passing out that often is mad
oh dude on the topic of older awesome horror games. The Clock Tower series is one that will live on in my memories forever! but i loved this one as well
I remember back when Manhunt came out there were articles around about violont games, to the point the game was banned in some countries.
Ever the loyal companion, rest in peace Brown.
Story summary: lady has too many drinks
After seeing this game in game informer ive been obsessed ever since. Love when it gets so attention
Haven't watched Gaming Harry for awhile. Cozy to listen to while grinding in an MMO as always
Why!!, every time i tell myself no more Video Games, that's when you always pop up! LETS GET IT!
I'M THRILLED that you'll be playing and covering Fatal Frame! I happen to have the original PS2 discs, if you need them.
Finally found time to watch this!❤
Damn, those kids are messed up! Poor Jennifer...
