  • This is part 2 of the 4-wheel disc conversion. Here I show the tear-down of the rear drums and install the new disc brake kit. There are also some adjustments I made to the wheels to get them to fit better in the fender wells.

    A Down to Earth guy, enjoyed the video ! For Deep rims and Big tires, it always pays to have your rear end narrowed - talk to Strange Engineering.

    Great video ! Thank you , Are your front wilwood rotors 4 piston ? Also are they 12” I wanna try to keep my 15 inch rally’s but in the website it says it fits most 15 inch wheels and heard that some rotors like the 12.19 don’t fit

    I ordered some 17 by 10 4.5 back space and a set of 8 in wide for the front I hope they fit

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think mine are 9.5 wide but 4.5 backspace won't be enough. You need at least 6" backspace. Let's see how it turns out!

    Would you happen to have the part number of the kit you installed? I called right stuff detailing directly to make sure I would get it correct the 2nd time and nothing but problems for my 71

    6” backspace then space them to fit. Might need a 1/4” spacer.

    Love the video. Right stuff sent you the wrong crap!
    Just a question why did you pick this kit vs say the 1998 to 2002 Camaro brake setup? I went from front drums to 11 inch front rotors. I am wanting to rear disc brakes. I am now looking into this kit. I just want to know why you love and why you hate this kit. After driving do you wish you would have picked another kit? I have a 71 nova

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually wasn't aware of that kit. For this one I just looked up the available conversion kits and found this one to be very well designed and fit my year Nova. What I like is how well the emergency brake setup works. I get all the adjustments I need. What I don't like is having to weld on the brake line brackets. Overall I'm very happy with it.

    Did u milled or cut the rims or send them to some machine shop to do the cutting ?
    I want to make the center bore of the rims up to an inch bigger to fit the rear end center hubs

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh i would never attempt that on my own. A specialty wheel and tire shop did it for me. They have a special lathe that ensures they are perfectly straight when cutting them back like that.

    Are them power,or non power disc breaks? And did you have to change master cylinder,or add booster?

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are powered. I had to change the master cylinder because I converted to rear disc brakes. It was already power disc on the front.

      No I sure don't. It's been a while ago. But you have to go by the year, make and model of your own vehicle. Search by that on therightstuff.com and on summitracing.com and you'll find the right kits for your car.

      Sorry just saw this. It moves them out maybe 1/8 inch due to the thickness of the rotor.

    Any chance you have a part number / vendor for those axle seals? I am in the middle of a disk brake conversion on my 68 (12 bolt posi) and I somehow can’t find the right axle seals… frustrated! Thanks!

      No I sure don't. But I got them from summit racing. Mine would be different from yours I would think. Mine is a 10-bolt posi, '72.
      I did a quick check and turned up these...

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I gotcha. But this kit is set up for front-mount due to the emergency brake option where the cables are set to mount to the front of the rotor. Otherwise these could easily be mounted in the rear.

  • @leorahim6268
    @leorahim6268 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brakes look good, I'm sure they will work wonderful but the parking brake will be never as good as the original drum brakes. If you live in an area where there's a lot of hills this an important consideration.

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true. With drum brakes they are designed to clamp harder if you turn the wheel. Discs are even pressure regardless of the wheel turning. But I have tried the emergency brake many times and they clamp pretty hard, even on an incline.

  • @jimjakosh2506
    @jimjakosh2506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those clips on the ends of the brake pads look hokey. There must be better conversion kits! Knowing that you had to put that short flex line from the caliper to the old line, you could have just cut the brake line off instead of using WD40 and messing around with the old fitting. How does the hand brake attach? That long cable seems like it would be the hand brake cable but you did not mention it or ever refer to those instructions you had to get from Jegs! They come out too far for wheel clearance. I'd hate to have to chop the fender to make them work! Having to watch bumps would be totally unacceptable for me!

    • @stevesgarage7644
      @stevesgarage7644  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just one reason; I wanted to ensure that this car could be put all back to original if I wanted to so no cutting of any sort when it comes to that.
