  • Paul Reubens is best known for his character, Pee-wee Herman, which he created while a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings. From its premiere in 1981, the stage production of The Pee-wee Herman Show quickly gained a national audience when it was broadcast by HBO. In 1985, Reubens co-wrote the hit film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. He went on to create, co-write and co-direct Pee-wee's Playhouse on CBS. The series earned 22 Emmy Awards over its five seasons. Recently, The Pee-wee Herman Show completed an acclaimed run on Broadway and was filmed, once again, for HBO. Join us as Paul discusses his remarkable body of work and the upcoming HBO special broadcast of 'The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway'. We can't wait, and hope you can't either

    He makes me feel like I'm home. When I watched him as a kid, I'd want to cry when the show ended. I had to deal with alot of stuff kids shouldn't go through. When Peewee was on, it was an escape from the chaos, when it went off, felt like I had to return to hell. Thanx for letting a scared lil' girl in your playhouse, Paul,it helped me then and now.

      I would go one further and say it is the single most unique character ever invented. So unique in fact no one will ever be able to reproduce it. Pee Wee lives and dies with Paul. It's also a character no one ever did before, or could do - a sassy, adult man child. Innocent, but sharp as a tack.

    As a kid back in around 1991 it was so unfair what the media did to this man. He was framed for something very embarrassing and I remember his career took a real hit and it was sad. People were so stupid and ignorant in those days. • @Silvana716
      @Silvana716 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      He wasn't framed and unfair is debatable. Indecent exposure is grounds for arrest regardless of status. Masturbating in a public theater is way more than embarrassing, unless you see it as a common practice? I remember a man being in an empty classroom where a friend went to study when I was at university and she became concerned - and she wasn't a prude. Is that normal to you? I think men may not consider sometimes what that often turns into for women. He had also already decided against a new Pee Wee's Playhouse season and was already going into syndication. He also was found to have vintage photos of what is considered child pornography among an alleged large collection of vintage pornography memorabilia. Read up on it. He is very talented but is also somewhat an oddball, which I like minus any sex offender behavior. Read up on him, then decide.

    His Letterman appearances are legendary. However, Pee Wee's Big Adventure is timeless. One of the best comedies of all time. The great thing is that those Pee Wee movies had a lot of dry, obscure humor mixed in. One of my favorite scenes was in Big Top Pee Wee, where his GF gives him an egg salad sandwich and he's acting like it's so delicious as he takes a bite.Then she turns her head for a second and he zings it and it takes off like a rocket. I'm actually laughing writing this. "Mmm, egg salad!" LOL! I don't think I laughed that hard since I realized the singing bush in The Three Amigos keeps singing all thru the scene it was in. If you listen, you can hear it in the background..."Yo Ho, blow the man down!" Plus the voice was hilarious.

      I agree. I'm so glad that Paul came up with his Pee-Wee character. It is truly unique and one of a kind. If the story is true that he had nothing to lose and ended up coming out with something due to fear of not doing it... and he solidified his funny/famous character.... then it goes to say... just do what you REALLY want from the get go! I have business ideas I'm only now working on, that due to fear, and only when after years it hit hard enough...that I came up with my solidified companies. One is from when I was just a kid, bored, and walking around truly trying to put my value (add value to those around me pre cell phone and internet days) by helping them with what's truly something important, the outside of their homes. (property maintenance) Since school I always wanted to be a teacher and was never recognized enough or given a real opportunity to be what I could for the other students and in turn myself...so despite my crazy ability to have started any company in the world I ever wanted, I always circled back to wanting to help others. In that aspect, my company's goal became to help other people...with their company whatever that may be. In this way I found I could truly do the best I can for those around me... and came from the fear that I couldn't do it.

    Conan, Leno, Letterman, O Reilly, Olbermann, Maddow, Hannity, all of you. Take a page from this host book. He is letting Paul talk, and he doesn't interrupt him. This what you all should be doing.

      Even though the shows should be about the VIEWER first, the GUEST second...and then the HOST doing their best to provide the viewers the best interview/entertainment... it definitely shows that there are/is not a great host now in these days or for a long time... they confuse the interview with things that insert themselves in the act of doing the interview, and they confuse the fact that the entertainment of the interview is supposed to come from what you can help create with your guest and topic matters for your viewers, not try to be the center of attention, or the main source of entertainment during the interview. Especially the fact that the interviews aren't real ones, it's ones the producers think that both current circumstance, the host, and the material can create out of the guest... totally takes away from the real life aspect of wanting to be entertained via interviews of guests that the viewers want to see which is why we give hosts platforms and our attention and hopes in the first place. Bring back real TV!

    Pee wee was a kid, not an adult. Too many saw Paul Reubens not Pee Wee. But Pee Wee was also the anti-comic. I just watched all his appearances on Letterman. Pee Wee is a child not seeking laughs but fun. Reubens is a genius in the line of Sasha B Cohen and Andy Kaufman working characters full time. Quite a rarity

    • @kerayzieart
      @kerayzieart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pee-wee is a grown man. He tells people that numerous times as Pee-wee. Also Pee-wee has a 'sex' scene in his 2nd movie Big Top Pee-wee. He is not a child. He IS however, the anticomic as you described.

      Agreed. Furthermore, he didn't have a whole lot to pay for. Jerking off in a porno theater? Yea that's freaking weird and kinda creepy but it's not "sick" I mean it's a porn theater!!! And if defined as a "crime" then it's a pretty minor one. wtf is a porno theater though? like why? even back then there was vhs lol

  • @eduardo_corrochio
    @eduardo_corrochio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He is one of my favorite entertainers, and I don't say something like that lightly or casually. I love so much of his work-- from Pee-Wee (it was fantastic when he guest hosted on The Joan Rivers Show in '86) to his appearances on Murphy Brown, and Everybody Loves Raymond as Russell the comic book guy, plus all the cartoon voices he did, and as Gerhardt in a 30 Rock episode, and as Pinocchio in Faerie Tale Theatre.
    But most dear to my heart are the Pee-Wee films and specials. Pure fun in massive amounts. I go back to them now and again, and they retain their charm and comedy. They'll never age, just like Paul. He's one of the good ones.

    Thank you Paul Reubens for all the laughs. I was in my early twenties when Pee-wee's Play House was on TV. I remember my grandmother getting so upset because she thought you were a homosexual and I would laugh at her then at the same time laugh while I was watching you. It was a double laugh because I understood your character and she didn't. To watch her about to blow just made me laugh harder. Maybe that wasn't right, but I couldn't help it. I also liked watching you after smoking a big Dobbie! I miss Pee-wee Herman, but I'm glad you are still working. I wouldn't mind seeing an adult version of Pee-wee someday with some double sided jokes. Take care and remember to never again get caught with your hand in the " play house"......😂

    My kids were crazy about Pee Wee and I think me and the wife were a little also because he really put a smile and a laugh on our faces on everything he did. A favorite skit is when he danced to Tequila at the Biker Bar and getting picked up by large Marge. The Play House show was a staple in our house we still enjoy him in our 70's.
