  • Paul Reubens entertained millions as Pee-wee Herman, but he could never leave the character completely behind - even in his personal life. For the star of "Pee-wee's Playhouse," the line between character and actor was often blurry.

A secret Pee Wee story: I was the director of photography on the last two seasons of Pee Wee's Playhouse when Paul was financing the series. Every so often, he would invite children for the Make a Wish Foundation to the set. On that day, he would halt production and take the kids around to meet all the characters. The crew were told not to call him Paul, but only Pee Wee in front of them. Best of all, he insisted that no one tell anyone what he had done. He wanted no publicity for himself. He was a great man, a great human.

Out of like 30,000 pictures in the collection there were maybe a dozen that were of guys who were maybe around 16 or so touching each other on the thigh. That’s what they called “child pornography” in that case and it’s why the indictment was downgraded to just “possession of an obscene image”.
Look, if he had actually been busted for kiddie porn or there was the slightest amount of evidence for that, I’d say “screw it, he deserves to be tarred with that brush.” But that just wasn’t the case. There was imagination, there was fantasy, and the ability for all of us to travel back to our childhood again. Paul so skillfully transported us there!
Now the sunshine has gone out. But it’s gonna forever live in our hearts and through his movies. RIP, Pee Wee. You’ll never be forgotten!

Some roles are just so popular and unforgettable that the actor just can't get away from it and it can be very difficult to move on. Pee Wee Herman, Steve Erkel, Ernest P Worrell, Kevin Mcallister, Screech Powers to name a few. Then there are actors who are very versatile in the roles that they play until they play something very dark or disturbing so well that you can't get that out of your head. Like Anthony Hopkins, I will always see Hannible Lecter. Arnold Schwarzenegger will always be the Terminator. Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa. Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman and so on. Rest in Peace Paul. You were kind of like the SpongeBob SquarePants of the 80's to me.

My Drama teacher in High School once told me: " Some of the best characters are perceived and a joke that the actor takes VERY seriously." I didn't understand exactly what he meant at the time, but I think that fits with how Paul played Pee-Wee.

Rest in Peace PeeWee always loved this character. . When he played parts other than PeeWee, I thought he did great in blow and Matilda, . I'm shocked you didn't have the clips from the Cheech and Chong days . Totally classic. Yes one of my go to, looking forward, miss those days, kind of admiration . I don't know who was a bigger fan of PeeWees okay house me or my kids. His arrest did nothing but ruin my Saturday morning when they removed his show. Boo on you Hollywood, your totally way more corrupt . Thanks. Good you remembered him.

Funny how people love to embarrass others with their private life exposés but those same people keep their own skeletons in the closet. It takes a real low life to embarrass someone after they pass. I respect the flood of compliments for our dear PeeWee, but l sure wish the compliments came in as strong while he was alive. Reflecting on his unique fashion of acceptance for others should have been reciprocated and his career springboarded from the ever stirred up PeeWeePorn Adventure. He was so much more than a personal act that everyone has done, minus the children's show ball and chain that hiccupped this man's career. How genius to step up so quickly on stage to ask, "has anyone heard any good jokes lately?" I loved him even more that night. Tequila!! Cheers Mr. PeeWee ❤️
