    Do you leave your brake on when down shifting? And does it make a difference if it’s on or off while down shifting? I have an 03 6 speed with a pac brake. Thanks!

    • @williamhsteele
      @williamhsteele  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hey, yeah I do leave it on when down shifting. It does make a difference when down shifting especially when your towing something. If you’re at all worried about hurting the pac brake or turbo while down shifting with the pac brake on, it won’t hurt anything. The pac brake disengages while the clutch is in and then re-engages as soon as you let the clutch back out and the truck senses the load/pressure. You’re welcome! And thank you for the question!

      These trucks can be extremely reliable as long as the previous owner or owners took decent care of it. The one thing I would absolutely do to the truck is put an aftermarket lift pump on it. I have a fass fuel 165 lift pump on this truck. The one weakness to these trucks is the stock/OEM lift pump and wears out causing the VP44 injection system to go bad. Thank you for watching. • @williamhsteele
      @williamhsteele  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah an exhaust brake definitely helps with these older trucks with their breaking systems. This truck has 4:10 rears which helps it shift right along at lower RPMs. Is your transmission a stock rebuild or did you have upgraded parts put in? Thank you for watching!

      @jimkillen1065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a stock rebuild . With a dual disc quiet lol Val Air twin disc , BM short shifter . I since added a hydroboost system. A significant increase in braking , it needed it . I will add a exhaust brake to my truck . What do you recommend. My truck has 3.54 gears . My g56 is the first version so over drive is not a high as the later model . I was thinking I might just go a larger tire to make up for that next time . When I changed the transmission mounted 4x4 to a floor mounted 4x4 shifter that was a deal . Works good though . Hey, good question. We simply do that because of the amount of torque the engine puts out. It’s easier and quicker to start out in 2nd gear if your not pulling a trailer with enough weight. However if you’re pulling a trailer you’ll end up using 1st gear to get the truck moving for the first 10 to 20 feet usually then go to 2nd gear. You would possibly stall the truck in 2nd gear if you had a trailer, especially trying to start out on an up hill with weight. Hopefully that makes sense. It’s something you have to try out and feel for yourself then you’ll totally understand. Did you get a truck yet? Or are you still looking?

    what brand is your exhaust break?

    • @williamhsteele
      @williamhsteele  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian Glover, this is the pac brake brand. It’s the direct mount for the stock turbo or if you have something similar. I have no complaints about it and it was a fairly simple install.

      Cody, it wasn’t bad at all. It Just took some time/patience running the lines. The toughest part was routing the wire to the switch in the cab.

    So much for the manual trans trucks, all history now. Wonder if a guy could come up with a manual conversion kit for these auto trucks and make some money with it.

    • @williamhsteele

      It’s sad that they don’t make manuals for these trucks anymore. I’m sure someone could come up with a kit, at least for the rams.

    • @williamhsteele

      This is a drive through cecil county maryland and into Chester county Pennsylvania. I don’t know much about California, I’ve never been there but I do love it over here because of all the farm land. However a couple weeks throughout the summer it can get pretty brutal as far as humidity. And then in the winter around January and February there can be days where it gets in the single digits with the wind chill. But other than that it’s a pretty neat area.
