    It's interesting that so many works set in the Viking age are male-dominated, because women actually enjoyed much more freedom in those societies than many other women of their day. They could own properties, had a say in their arranged marriages and could divorce their husbands, if they so wished. There were also many recorded instances of shieldmaidens fighting alongside male warriors. Clearly still horribly oppressive to women, but less so than many other tribes. I suppose that, realistically, war discussions would be reserved solely for those women who rose through the ranks, of which there are also recorded cases, so in that sense you're right to point this out. Still, it's just an interesting historical tidbit that I personally enjoy seeing in literature and media alike.

    I’ve had this on my TBR for a while and just haven’t decided if I really want to pick it up, but your review has decided for me that I need to. Sounds like it may be really good.

    I was in love with the Sky In the Deep. This one I liked but it didn’t quite live up to her previous book.

    READ FABLE!! It was a world I didn't want to leave. The setting is absolutely felt. I haven't been able to get into this one as much as Fable and Sky in the Deep. But I love love her writing style.

    I really liked this book! Elliot, you mentioned that you wished there was more to read in this world - You should read Sky In The Deep if you haven't already! It's so good, and while The Girl The Sea Gave Back is not exactly a sequel, it is sort of a spin-off that takes place in the same world, with a lot of the same themes, sometime after Sky In The Deep, with many of the same characters. You would love it : )

    I loved this book so much! I also felt like I was enmeshed into the world and story! It was so atmostpherec and beautifully written. I'm a character driven loving reader and she really knows how to write characters that you care about and want more of I think as well!

    This story is definitely very interesting with 2 main characters. It kinda sounds like a mix of little mermaid & Vinland Saga to me lol 😂. It's really cool is you felt like you was apart of the story emotionally. I noticed recently especially now that i just started reading Skyward; i love 3rd person stories however 1st person can be nice too. I find that 3rd person are easy to follow. I hope The Girl The Sea Gave back don't be too complicated for me. Once i finish Skyward, I'll go to barnes and nobile to look at this one. It doesn't sound like a boring story which is great. You did an excellent job explaining it Elliot. Have a lovely happy reading weekend💫💜

    I read this and had a hard time getting into it. I felt like there were some things that should've been explained and developed more. I didn't think it was horrible but it didn't grab me. I probably wouldn't ever really recommend it to anyone.

    The sarcasm in the beginning is 👌🏼😂😂😂.
    There was a tv show (I don't remember what it's called) but it was essentially a woman who's found in a bag and she's covered in tattoos but doesn't know why. Of course she comes to find out that shes like a super fighter yadda yadda badasserie... But then the secret service or FBI or whatever all of the sudden lets her work with them and every time they try to get her to hang back or stay out of it she was like "IT'S TATTOOED ON MY BODY..." And to this day my husband and I will say it to each other as a joke 😂. Like for all kinds of things... "I need to go to the store, ITS TATTOOED ON MY BODY". The show was so bad it we couldn't even finish the season haha
    Not that this has anything to do with the review. Hope it made you chuckle 😂

      I remember seeing ads for that show! I never saw it though. You and your husband sound like you make the same kinda of jokes me and my hubby do 😆

    Isn’t this book is a spin-off of Adrienne Young’s first novel and set in the same world?

    • @ebnovels

      It’s a spin-off, but it’s not a sequel, so if you’re interested in it, you don’t have to read the other first.

    I understand your concern about women rights in viking age, however I think it may be misguided. Drengr was the ideal virtue in viking society, which is the strong warrior stereotype (sort of) we imagine when thinking about vikings, men that weren’t drengr where frowned upon and mocked. Women didn’t HAVE to be drengr, they had the usual role in family affairs but they were not disincouraged at all to be drengr or be in positions of power either. They were (if they wanted to) career military women and there are many accounts of ruling queens too, also they could be seigr (witches) and be less frowned upon than their male counter parts, because seigr was considered a womanly practice, which IS the worst thing you could say to a MAN. So I think if we are concerned about freedom, men were more restricted than women, but as usual, we women tend to prefer not to get in battle and get ourselves killed.

      I was more referring to how we usually see Vikings in media and stories.

    Ugh, first-person perspective. I hate it, it feels like the easy way out and makes me cringe so often.

    • @GEORGIOARCADE
      @GEORGIOARCADE 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol it has to be done right & not too complicated & all over the place. Usually if it's telling one person's story i like it. I'm more of a 3rd person story kinda guy 😄

    • @demonsangells
      @demonsangells 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GEORGIOARCADE I'm sure there are good books out there written in first-person perspective, but no matter how good a book is, it just feels so cheap and uninspiring.

    • @ebnovels

      How so?

    • @demonsangells
      @demonsangells 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ebnovels I can't help it, for some reason I feel like books that are written in first-person perspective are amateur works. Mostly fitting for personal vlogs or journals. It just feels... off. Especially for a fantasy novel. I can see it working in some Vampire fiction maybe? But not for a full-blown fantasy novel.
