When I was reading "katzenjammers" I thought it was something bad. Katzenjammer is german and is used when your expectations were too high and you got back to reality. Or when someone was drunk and fun and then sobering up and complaining about the hangover - that's "Katzenjammer".

Bees get confused if you move the hive (even by 3 feet). I'd recommend you find a permanent sheltered place to put the hives, then bc of the 🐻 put an electric fence around it. LOVE your videos & look forward to each one.

AL and all, I would never thought of New Hampshire as being a place for having bees. I pray the bear(s) do not mess up your way of life. I have a similar bee hive in The Philippines and I hope to put more hives in protected areas of the coconut orchards. I am impressed with your different clovers in that pasture. The goats should love that pasture. Your channel and homestead have come so far in the last three and a half years. You are a hard working family and the homestead shows your love of the land. You are very blessed. Please stay safe. God bless America.

I saw a video where you only start the bees on one end blocking off the other 2/3 otherwise they will grow a bit disorganized across the hive. One queen for the whole horizontal hive starting right to left and open up to the left as they fill up the hive. Then open your other entrances as needed as well. This is the miracle of the horizontal hive. I watched several videos on this where the guy that invented these visited a guy to consult a beekeeper in the mountains. The guy was amazing. Wish I could remember names better, therein lies my LD. NEVER say if they can get thru something they can have it. Believe me me thru experience that can jinx it 😂. Looking great guys! Lovin it!

I am not Critisizing.. Living up in the wooded mountains myself, many are moving to wider spaces to live the lifestyle you are. The more Man enchroaches in Mother Natures area, the more wild animals we see. We do what we can. Now as for the neighbors dog, please do not blame the dog. Your neighbor is responsible and should be accountable to pay for loss of your livestock. My neighbors dogs attacked my chickens twice. Yes, he paid twice for my loss, but it was the second time, he lost his dogs to animal control. I am sure that if Pluto or Tanner did what that dog did, you would feel responsible. Alerting Fish and Game depart. about the bear is a very wise idea. Not only fencing for your bees, but the blueberries too! Thank you for sharing.

@@cathiwim Black Bears won't come near the house during the daytime, only at night, and their chickens are in the coop at night. Stop acting scared out of your pants and scaring other people, here in Minnesota we have bears everywhere, and we don't electrify our entire property, and we managed to live to a good ripe age! You also don't want to let food items or trash laying around, that's like inviting them, so be smart about it. You do want to fence your bee hives, because they will come back time and again once they've discovered a food source, and they will obliterate the hives. PS...not only do we have Bears, we also have Wolfes, Coyotes, Badgers, Wolferines, and Cougars have recently been documented.

If practical, allow your chickens access to your bee hives. There is a pest "Small Hive Beetle" that does damage inside bee hives. Their larvae exit the hive, burrow into the ground pupate and return as adult beetles. Chickens will eat the larvae and adult beetles.

Th veggies in the greenhouse are looking fabulous. That was a wise investment. On VW Family Farm’s vlog this morning, they had a state bee inspector. He advised Ben to split up his hives to different parts of the property. If a bear or something else destroyed his hives in one place, then not all would be lost & he could rebuild. I hope that bear doesn’t come back. I would be worried about him/her being so close. I really enjoy your channel & hate the days when you don’t post. I know you need a break, but I’m just being selfish. Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🐝🥰🙏🙏🙏

Pretty good sized bear, given that print just up and to the left of the scat when you have the camera pointed at Gina's boots at twelve o'clock. Looking forward to your bee adventure, especially in horizontal hives (which I am really considering, given that I've been harvesting honey the past three days out of my traditional langstroth verticals). But if you have a bear coming around, I'd agree with the others and get some electric fencing in place around your hives, because they will wipe out the colonies.
Edit: since you have the handy greenhouse, you could also overwinter the hives in the greenhouse itself. Also, since you guys get such big winds (and bears), you might want to put a latch on the tops of those hives.

Check out Off Grid with Doug and Stacy ... Great horizontal hive videos ... Among others of course ... I hope your gees are locally caught ... Better to get local that are more acclimated to your weather ... Wild caught swarms is considered best ... If bear you might consider electric around the hive ... Just my experience ... Your mileage may vary ...

We have had a big male black bear who has been around enough that we’ve named him Fred. He’s shown up on the game cam and moseyed up the driveway in broad daylight. We had to scare him off with 6 warning shots from the rifle! The neighbors have seen a mama with 2 cubs. The previous owner told us they only saw maybe 5 bears in 35 years. Idk if they just never looked outside or it’s a crazy bear season in NH this year.

LOL You are right. That footprint you found was HUGE! Didn't damage anything on our property, but most likely moved on to the fruit trees at the neighbor's place. Good luck and keep those bees safe.

Not good if you've got a dog after your chickens, especially as it had to get through a fence and Rusty. In my experience, once they start, they're almost impossible to stop.
Bear activity is not something we have to worry about here in the UK, but it's going to be interesting to see if the game cameras pick anything else up.
Looking forward to seeing the bees arriving. As well as the chick-shaw in action sometime soon.

Yes yes I would definitely put something around the bees to keep the bear out because they love honey and they'll destroy those things it was probably more or less after the apples bears are more especially black bears which we have out here they are more omnivorous but they like their fruits and vegetables so yeah I'd keep an eye on things because they would definitely have fun in your greenhouse and there's not anything that would keep it out of there tear that thing apart please please please take care stay safe and God bless can't wait to see what's next I love your farm by the way

With all your bear activity you may want to make a plan on how to tether your hives to the ground to keep them from being damaged. We just purchased a “wild” bit of acreage and bears kinda freak me out. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoyed the video...got couple helpful tips.
    Being a Beekeeper as well...
You're going to need to make a quality strong fence around your bees, to keep the bears out...a flimsy electric fence Wont cut it. Personally I would erect a 8 foot cyclone fence and electrify it about a foot down from the top.
Your hive entrance reducer is a great idea, but your going to have issues sliding it back and forth. Because the bees will glue the bolt head to the hive body...ask me how I know.
What I did was to take a small strip, (slightly bigger than the opening), and a square nail...place the strip on the landing board, then use the nail to pinch it into the strip. The bees will then glue only the strip...which is easy to remove with a hive tool.
    Good Luck on the journey.

Al you have never talked about you having a peace maker. But, with a bear now scouting your 🚜 farm, knowing there is plentiful bounty for a meal. Now is the time to be prepared to defended your farm and family. Talk to neighbors to see if they have signs of the bear or issues. If it is a female, it might have had cubs. If so, this could be the beginning of a lot of problems. Due to creek being dried up, it also could be looking for a water source. Please take measures to be prepared for incoming bear, coyote or dog both day and night. Perhaps a 🐕, like a German Shepherd is going to be needed in the very near future to protect the farm and YOU AND FAMILY. G-D Bless and Stay Safe. Much 💘 from N.Y.

One thing that would give your bees a huge boost if you are getting packaged bees would be a few frames of BetterBee comb foundation. It gives the Queen an immediate place to lay eggs immediately. I'm coming back into the hobby after a 20+ year absence and I'm amazed at the new products. But because the videos are already history you probably already have your bees installed.... next time.

Try the pizza on the pellet grill! If your grill runs true to temp set up and bake the same way you do in the oven. It adds a little wood fired taste and will keep the house cool. One of our kids favorite things to make on the pellet grill!

I keep bees here in Australia, if I can offer a piece of advice it would be not to have all those new frames in the hive till the hive has grown to need them.
You need to keep the bee to wax ratio right otherwise you end up with wax moth and hive beetle. If it was me I would put 1 new frame on either side of the nuc till they drew out that comb then add 2 more etc....
Also bees keep the brood at 35 degrees C so keeping area they are in as tight as possible will mean less work to keep warm.
Here we face our hives East if possible so that they get the morning sun, helps to wake the hive up and get them flying earlier.
Just info, the bee that collects nectar/pollen doesn’t store it, she passes it off to another bee just inside who does that. They are beautiful and amazing creatures!

A few years back we had just set up our hives and a few days later we woke up to our hives tipped over and frames everywhere. We put them back together and they survived. An electric fence went up that afternoon. It turned out to be a bear living in the woods behind our property. No problem after the fence went up.

A couple of strands of electric along the full length of the pasture fence would help protect NYC and the goats. A couple of ipcctv cameras and a couple of pir floodlights on the barn/shop would be better long term than the trail cams. And maybe a couple of pir floods around the house as well.

  • @pippaseaspirit4415
    @pippaseaspirit4415 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It would be a very good idea to put up hotwires above your pasture fences and around the bucks’ enclosure too. Goats make a nice snack for bears! With predators around electric fences are your best friend.

if you drill some shallow holes and glue maybe 1 1/2 or 2 inch long dowel rod in them it will keep your bee doors level just a thought if you have some scrap around

Many years ago when we were back in the U.P. of Michigan we'd have bear coming up our front porch steps. All we'd do is bang on the inside of the door it'd scare off the bear. Bear is a very common thing living up north. We never had to relocate them. Now we reside in central Oklahoma and have one bear that continues to walk through our place off the river from Arkansas. He tries to get our bird feeders (seed, and sugar water). He's been just off both the front, and back porch. He's a out 250 pounds. He scares off easily. Obvious the bear came to your area because he/she smelled the apples. You'll need some sort of deterrent around your bees before honey is produced. If bear can smell an dead animal carcass 20 miles away, they'll smell honey, or even a dead chicken. Just be alert to your surroundings when outside.

Get mouse guards for your openings to the hives! Otherwise they can be a problem particularly in autumn/fall :) Depending on the mouse guard design they can help you control the size of the openings too. Good luck with the bees!
