    I just moved from south Texas to Tennessee and moved my whole house , garage stuff and workshop tools for less than $900. We rented a uhaul, packed it carefully filled to the brim and drove it ourselves. Gas is much cheaper now so spent only $285 on gas and truck was $600. If your not a minimalist and want to move ALL your stuff in one fell swoop then this is the way to go. You have to work hard packing, loading & unloading but it was worth it. Hopefully our last move!

      Nice! We weren't willing to drive a U-haul from NC to CA, having never done a cross country trip in a car. It sounds like it was worthwhile in your case.

      Laurie Rowe yes I rented a huge 26 ft truck. Loaded, drove it to Tennessee and unloaded it in 5 days. It was a lot of work but I did it all for less than $900 gas included.

      How to you get your items to the amtrak location?

    • @frugalhealthyvegan1319
      @frugalhealthyvegan1319  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Eben18 we rented a truck for that short trip to the amtrak location nearest to us in California. Renting a truck for a few hours is pretty inexpensive. For our pick-up trip, we actually happened to rent an apartment across the street from amtrack, so we used a handtruck to cart the boxes over a few at a time on our own!

    • @dollfaice3259
      @dollfaice3259 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Eben18 You can either hire some one who has a personal truck service that they use to move people's stuff. Sometimes they advertise on craigslist or in the news paper. Or you can hire a moving company in your area who charges by the hour, who will load it up for you and deliver it to amtrak for you. Just go with them to amtrak to pay amtrak. Call amtrak first to see if you need to schedule a day or Just show up with your belongings anytime between Days and Hours of operation.

    Thanks for the information; have moved over the last 30 years cross country too many times to list. The last time I moved, I purged, sold, gave away 3/4 of my things, purchased a box truck, loaded it, drove it and when I arrived, had the truck as a storage unit and did not have to "move" my things until I found a place. Upon finding housing and unloading the truck, sold the truck. Cost for move was gas and lodging alone ... around $1000

I cant tell you the amount of times people forget this and screw up their new purchase...The Southwest hack; *DON'T* open new cards if you are buying a home with financing!!! This could easily disqualify you *completely* for your new purchase. You could still qualify, but don't chance it...Check with your loan officer *BEFORE* you run your credit. ;-)

And I asked him what do you mean and he said yeah we won't be doing amtrak shipping anymore at all come September 15th!
      I was like what! I literally just made it. Now I understand why I kept feeling in my spirit to leave before August. Because if I would have left later in August I would have been to close to the deadline or they could have easily changed the cutoff date to August or Earlier in September. Thank God I made it!

    I won't say why I'm an experienced mover it's a lament not a boast. Don't buy expensive wardrobe boxes. Get bulk large contractor bags from Walmart or Home Depot that have the draw string closure not the ties. Turn them upside down and in the middle/center where the seam is cut a U shaped opening. Take your hanger clothes and pull the bag over the top to the hole you cut and bring hanger hooks thru the hole then drawstring close the bottom.
    You can leave them like this in a vehicle for a local move or fold over and use a much less expensive box for a long move.
    Yes the clothes get wrinkled but they will anyway.
    Use all of your (except your best) kitchen dish bath towels older sheets to pack fragile items instead of paying for expensive bubble wrap or packing paper. Yes you'll need to launder the towels but if you use any kind of rental truck or movers everything gets incredibly dusty and dirty anyway.
    Hope this helps some folks.
    Good luck everyone!

    This is a great tip about shipping boxes with Amtrack......thank you.....I'm wondering though if there is much of a chance of boxes being lost or stolen with Amtrack??

    Thank you, loved your tips and especially the advice on the Amtrak hack. So, how does it work? Do you go and drop it at the location and pick it up at the final destination? Thanks :)

      We dropped it off at the location in Oakland (nearest to us in San Francisco) during the business hours for drop off. They called us when it arrived in NC so we could come and pick it up. It was so easy! It took about a week. www.amtrak.com/express-shipping

    Making friends with my local grocery store's deli clerk, I was able to obtain about 30 egg boxes in one week.

    Thank you for your tips. I'm 58 and my wife is 52. We are moving from Oregon to Tennessee. You really helped us. Thank you for helping old people. Ha Ha, but also I'm serious. You should feel good about yourself and helping others.

    I am SO GLAD that I stumbled across this video!! I am on my 5th (and hopefully final lol) move! But this time, my move is not sponsored by a company. I'm heading to Atlanta from Seattle and need to stick to a solid budget. The Amtrak tip BLEW MY MIND! I had no idea. Thank you for saving me thousands and from having to get rid of things I wanted to take with me!! THANK YOU!

    Great video. Was looking into buying a new mattress for a short term move nearby but if I’m moving out of state after a year so it may not be worth buying a whole new if I’ll just have to sell it or whatever.

      Wow, that is a quandary! Good luck! I would definitely find out how much it would cost to move versus selling it and buying a second hand riding mower when you get to FL. :)

      Moving that far can get really pricey, it's true! I'm happy to share my honest experience. I definitely paid too much for my first move cross country and learned my lesson for my second move.

    You mentioned you bought boxes from Uhaul.. but did you not look into using their Ubox service? It’s super cheap. Can pack an entire house into their cubes and they’ll drive it for you across the country and store the cubes until you need them delivered.. Moving 1,000 miles and needing 4 cubes for my house - I was quoted $2,250. None of that requires you to drive boxes anywhere or do any lifting yourself.

      I was just quoted 4300 for 3 cubes! 2 days ago going from ga to mt! 3 bedroom apartment no dressers or storage or large headboards.
