    My husband works as a mover. In his profession he gets pretty close and intimate with peoples’ lives and belongings, often packing them as well as transporting them. He’s been doing this for ten years and truly loves his job but he never gets over three things:
    1. People have SO much stuff they obviously don’t use, shut away in places that can’t easily be reached, and yet they pay SO MUCH MONEY to have it moved.
    2. People often move just to be able to store their belongings. They pay considerable money to buy a bigger house or rent a bigger apartment just to accommodate their stuff.
    3. A lot of the time even when they’ve moved to a bigger space it’s still too small for all the stuff (and furniture). The beautiful new house is instantly crowded and cluttered, even before they get unpacked.
    And this is the norm. It’s nothing unusual and it happens in all families no matter their socioeconomic status. People don’t realise how much owning things costs. How much money you can save by scaling down your belongings.

    • @grogers511

      Sadder still.... my father owned a storage facility. You wouldn’t believe the junk people pay to store. Out of sight... out of mind. But, they keep paying to store it.

    • @FilippaSkog
      @FilippaSkog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@grogers511 Yes, my husband have worked for companies that offer storage solutions, it's quite common in the moving business here in Sweden. Part of the job at those companies was to empty storage boxes ("boxes", they're big as a smaller room) where the owner hadn't paid the rent for months, and drive the things inside to charity. Most things people stored, he said, was basically junk. Just stuff. Old fast fashion clothes and shoes, books, Ikea furniture, maybe some hobby equipment. Nothing of high value, neither monetary nor emotional. Things that cost the owner thousands of dollars each year to hold on to. Again, there's no special demographic that does this. It's really sad to think about. Imagine what most people could do with $1000-$2000 a year.

      I love movers! We are moving at the end of the month and I am 40% packed and I always stage for the movers. Their job isn't to organize me...it is to move me. De cluttering when I am packing gets easy and brutal. I gotta LOVE it to move it.

      For me hiring a mover is worth it 100%. Then part of that process is making that affordable. The best way to do that is be packed up and only bring what you love with you. Less time equals more affordable mover bill.

      I really wish I had known about this video 8 years ago when I moved from living alone in an apartment to moving in with a relative who had basically everything and So I wished I had gone through my stuff dec 2012 and got rid of all things I did not “love” or “needed” because in end several of the things I brought in got ruined due to water leaking, stopped working or got destroyed in other ways and if I had just not bothered in first place I wouldn’t be wondering now all this time how to get mould out of the bottom edges of books! They would have been gone before I moved or dealt with right away and not left sitting in basement getting ruined

    For my move last June, I began packing in February. On moving day, we sat and waited for the movers to arrive, completely ready and relaxed. It was the best move ever and all thanks to being a minimalist and also to not procrastinating. We lived out of some boxes heading up to the move but I knew where everything was and it was definitely worth the minor inconvenience. Stress is a killer!

  • @theGhostSteward
    @theGhostSteward 3 ปีที่แล้ว +120

    1- Start early. We often overestimate the time we have and you can sell, donate and it makes the process less stressefull if you dont trip on stuff.
    2- Start with the bulkier stuff and work the way down. It makes the biggest impact on volume.
    3-It is pointless to declutter things that are stored in furniture you gone bring in the next house.
    4-Don`t force yourself to be perfect. You gona declutter while unpacking anyway. Gain time.
    Questions:
    Have you used that item after the previous moving?
    Have you used it in a long time?
    Do I love this item enough to pack, transport, move, pay, umpack and find a new place?
    Is that item worth the trouble?
    Are you willing to have it ship or buy insurance?
    Are I willing to make the inventory of all that stuff?
    Does this items fit the feeling of the new home?
    it is just a relic of the past?
    If this item got lost or damaged how defasted you will be?

    Love this. I'm an empty nester who downsized to about a third or fourth the space. I thought I did a great job decluttering before move...but way overestimated my new space. That's o.k. Every box I'm unpacking, I'm reevaluating and decluttering more. And after we are settled, I'll go through again.

      So late to this party, but I can relate. My 2 kids and I moved from a 3 bedroom house with a 400 sq ft studio in the backyard, plus garage, to a 2 bedroom apartment and oh my lord was there some mass stuff to still get rid of once we moved. Since we moved I have fully decluttered the apartment and if I need to move again it will not be the total chaos moving here was.

    18 days to my move & enjoying the motivation from the deadline. I didn't think I have much clutter but have a lot of unfinished projects (craft, clothes to alter, etc etc). I realised I don't want to move the bad energy of unfinished projects into my forever home so am busy deciding "finish it now or get rid".

I won't move until 6 or 12 months from now but I want to intentionally make time for my projects this year and as you said it - if I don't finish it in this time, there is absolutely no point in moving it to just have it sit in the shelves for another couple of years..

    I moved from WI to IL a few years ago and only insisted on moving my bed. I downsized everything else into a couple boxes per room (I lived alone). By decluttering ahead of time, I was able to save the cost of having the movers use a larger truck and paying for extra movers to help. They actually rented one of the smallest U-Haul trucks available and it saved me a ton of money. They are a small company and quite happy with the light load that day lol.

    My fiance and I are moving at the end of our lease in Sept. I just want to move in a less stressful manner this time so I'm here for motivation. I've already got many boxes packed of current art supplies, décor and sentimental items. My biggest task will be sorting through clothes as I probably have 6+ laundry baskets of just my own clothes
    My favorite way to decide if I can part with something yet or not is to ask myself "If a natural disaster were to happen, which items would I save first? Would I remember this item if everything got destroyed or lost?" I like to imagine that I've been informed that a tornado is on its way to destroy my home and I have an hour to pack up my important stuff and leave. It might seem dramatic or extreme but its something that sparks emotion so I know if I should keep something or let it go! Simply looking at the item the marie kondo way doesn't do anything for me. I have feelings attached to every item I own!

    I frequently say I need a bigger house, yet I sometimes view the house I live in (925 ft2) as too big. I've concluded I just like a lot of "elbow room," and it hasn't always got to do with how much I own. I pared down extensively on my last move. Being I want to go off-grid, I should design a house specifically for the way I want to live, and that will accommodate my stuff. I don't want "more" stuff, just "nice" stuff. I'm willing to trade. It's like growing up: I'm in a new phase now. At least I recognize that. I think that an important step.

I moved quite a bit for work when I was younger and only once did I get caught being behind on my regular decluttering of paperwork and other things. I had to move stuff I would have preferred not to move and doing those move inventories are horrible. Makes you not want to own anything. I’m contemplating a move and downsize in a few years as I retire and I’m getting rid of a lot of things now that I would not want to pay to move or keep in a smaller space.

    The thing I see in college town is the stuff people leave in lobby when they are moving out. Of course I bring those bags to see if there is anything good in it. And my God, there are so many food items that have been expired 2 years prior, dishes that are unclean, furniture that has never been dusted. I wonder how people live mindlessly in their homes and never go through their items

    1) Have you used this item since the last time you moved?
    2) Do I love this item enough to go through the process of moving it? (The cost, the time, the effort, etc)
    3) Are you willing to pay to have this item shipped, itemised or insured? (E.g. overseas move)
    4) Does this item fit with the vibe of the new home you are moving to and the lifestyle you want to create? Or is it just a relic of the past? (Do you want it in your future)
    5) If this item got lost, broken or damaged in the move how upset would you be? How much will it hurt if you have to say goodbye to it?

    Was it worth moving inexpensive and easily replaceable furniture (IKEA)? I'm curious. We're looking at a cross border move (not over an ocean thank goodness!) We have so much of that kind of stuff and it's nowhere near new to begin with. Could be easily damaged during the move. It doesn't seem wise to pay to move it only to have it get there broken and throw it out anyway. I was wondering how full service moving costs are calculated, weight? volume? value?

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Because our move was transatlantic we were paying for a shipping container. It was a flat rate, so we could pack whatever fit in it. Assuming you'll be using a truck, you're probably best putting the priorities in first. If you still have space for the IKEA stuff (and you still want it, of course), take it with you. If not, try recycle.

      I wondered about this too, specifically IKEA style furniture. I think in most cases it would make more sense to sell it cheap locally before you move (maybe help out someone who can’t afford new) and then replace it in your new location. Damage during the move is pretty likely in most cases (even just moving it from one room to another! lol) and then you have the hassle of dumping it too. And who even knows if it will fit well in your new space. It might be a good chance to get something a bit better quality or buy a fun used piece or just start fresh with new IKEA that fits your new home.

    LOL. OMG. that is exactly what I've been doing is pretending I'm moving as I choose what all to let go of. It is helping a lot. Would I want to bother moving this? NO!!!!! That is my answer most of the time. I still need a lot of those things though so I've kept them....but....yeah....it is helpful to pretend I'm moving as I declutter. To make it even more interesting, I pretend I'm going to move abroad. Of course, if I really were doing that I'd get rid of almost everything and have to buy many things once I got to where I was going as that would cost less than shipping things over, but it also helps me be even more selective. I say, "NO," a lot more often now! 😀😀😀

    So i have quite the conundrum... Ive gone through everything once already. We currently live in an itty bitty house and we'll be moving into a much larger house. Its a home we inherited and is going to have to be essentially gutted and remodeled. We don't even have a move date or really an idea of when but i want to declutter as much as possible as early as possible. I dont know how the house is going to be remodeled so I don't necessarily know what im going to need but i dont want to keep everything. I know just because i have the space, i dont need to fill it and i dont plan to. But theres stuff taking up space in our small house that we need until we move. I dont know what to do at this point!!??!
