Speaking as an ER vet, please also monitor your cat before, during, and after the move for signs of urinary obstruction (not passing urine, straining in the box with little to no urine passing, vocalization while in the litter box). There are many factors that can cause this, the number one being stress, and this is an emergency.

For those of us living in smaller apartments, or studio apartments, without the luxury of spare rooms with doors that can be closed, I thought it worth mentioning that the concept of a base camp can still work. When we brought our littermate kittens home (where we already had two older cats), we cleared out a corner of the main room, used their carrier for a bed, with another more exposed snuggle space nearby, gave them their own food & water dishes and their own litter box and toys and let them venture out at their own pace. The older cats would occasionally come sniff out the area when the kittens were asleep, and the kittens slowly started roaming, but came back to sleep in their area, until they didn't need it anymore. We adjusted the configuration based on the needs of the cats. It's possible to make things work with what you have to work with.

To help Jackson Galaxy on this is, I've moved with 6 cats. I did most of what he's saying and when it came to 12 litterpans I worked with it. I scooped then I'd put newspapers on top each one and stack them. Placing 3 at a time in a plastic bag. First cats went in crates. I talked to them as I readied pans. Placing blinkers over them that smelled like both us. I only packed their things just before leaving my place for the last time. All worked out well and no problems. When in new home put cats in a empty room before letting them out of crate unpack their things first and place around room. Just open crate doors and let them come out when they're ready. 😺😻😸👍💕

Extra tip. As a mover we are not going to read what is on doors, so making a big X on the basecamp door in masking/moving tape is much better than just a sign. Make it from door frame to door frame. Cats will likely stay in the room, but you never know and they could become skittish and run away.

When we moved we couldn’t have a whole room as base camp. So we actually used a two person tent and set it up with all their things in it. We got them used to it before we started having to move things out. When we got to the new house we introduced slowly, tent->spare room->upstairs ->basement. It really seemed to help them gain confidence in their surroundings.

I moved about 6 weeks ago, short distance with my cat. Once the movers moved me I picked up my cat, her cat tree, litter box with fresh litter, but "seeded" with some of her poo and a urine clump. It was just she and I in a quiet apartment. She walked all over checked it out, climbed into the depths of a dark closet and slept for about 6 hours. Then she was ready to come out and eat and drink a little. She seems to be adapting pretty well. She is going from an indoor/outdoor idyllic life in the woods to a one bedroom third floor apartment with a small balcony. She seems quite content, although she occasionally goes to the door and stares at it as if to say "well this was a nice visit, but let's go HOME now!" We're doing our best.

willg54 The pets are the biggest concern I have! The guy named Hoag on YT went from CA to TN with the dogs in an RV and I thought it made the most sense. If you get those big wire cages, you can put small litter boxes in each one with 2-3 cats each or wing it and keep them free, just lock them in when you need to get out of the Rv. Most likely the cats will be freaked out regardless. Good luck.

My cat hid under the bed when I moved house and wouldn't come out for anything. That was very unlike him, I'd moved house with him before and he was fine. Turns out he'd spotted his reflection in the full length mirror on the wardrobe door and assumed the house was Wardrobe Cat's territory and therefore didn't want to come out and cause a fight. I covered up the wardrobe door, my cat forgot Wardrobe Cat existed, and he was perfectly happy from there on in.

We moved from Washington State to Virginia with 2 elderly cats. We spent 5 days on the road and stayed at hotels the entire way. 3 things that helped out big time. We brought our unwashed bed comforter (cats slept with us) with us and used that on each of the hotel room beds. And the used kitty litter was a must. Bagged it up and took it to each of the hotel rooms. And the last was their food dishes. They knew that those meant theirs and it helped reduce stress.

    • @yellotang
      @yellotang หลายเดือนก่อน

@@imnotgonnasay3612 If you keep a cool head, the cats will feed off your calmness and that helps out. Yes (good) harness training and mini trips should help a lot out. BTW, hotels are not allowed to ask for paperwork to prove an animal is a comfort companion animal and they are not legally allowed to deny them in the hotel rooms. Look into American Disabilities Act laws. This is for some of the people that state that hotels have told people that companion animals are no longer allowed which is against the law.

Siri did great during the drivee, she even tagged along when I let the dog out to pee at a rest area - both leashed, of course. When we arrived she came straight out of her carrier, strutted around, tail held high, like she owned the place and immediately started exploring. I'm constantly amazed at her fearlessness and positive outlook on life. Blessed to share my live with this very special cat (who was rescued from the streets of Athens and came to Germany via plane - adopt, don't shop!) and equally special dog.

Jackson, you were a GREAT help in preparing my kitties for my move across country. It was still stressful for them, but planning ahead helped them adjust within a month or two. I put their car cage in my bedroom with my towels and a small litter pan and they were well used to by the time we started. They got a prescription from the vet to help them relax and a friend gave them some catnip infused snuggle pads. They cried for a short time when we started, then just settled in. They ate and pooped normally for the entire 24 hour trip. Unfortunately we had to stay at my sister's until my furniture was delivered. They tended to hide under her bed, but came out at night when we slept together. Once we finally got settled to my new place, they explored the place, found their old litter pans and cat trees, and my bed. They did hide for a bit, but shortly after moving in, they happily made this their home. They especially love the huge picture windows! I think my cats would be happy pretty much anywhere where I am and, of course, the feeling is mutual!

The very same day of moving I had an important exam that lasted the whole morning so I got out from the old house like at 8 am and came back to the new apartment at 3 pm and my parents just jammed our 3 cats in the same carrier since the other one was broken when they found it, and they were super chill on top of each other. Yeah, I didn't do the base camp thing with my cats. Both of them just pranced right out of their carriers like they owned the whole apartment. There was no need to confine them because they were thrilled about exploring EVERY SINGLE THING about the place lol! I have a picture of my Gabriel sauntering across the kitchen floor and my Waverly-Grace exploring the bath tub lol! Maybe I was just lucky and I had 2 cats that were easy to please. I think it depends on the personality your cat has. I think that if you have a cat that likes to explore and be the life of the party, you are probably okay to just let them explore. But if you have skiddish cats that get really stressed out and upset easily, you should probably listen to Jackson's advice. He is the expert!

Hey Jackson I take my cat on holiday in the Uk with me. We hire a cottage for a week and he comes with us. We bring a lot of his scent soakers and admittedly he is wary at first sniffing everything but having his stuff there really helps him to relax and settle pretty quickly. Obviously we can’t bring his cat tree but a chair positioned in front of a window with his cushion on it has been a huge success. I guess what I am saying is your moving tips also work for holidays….we love having Simba with us makes our holiday puuurrrrfect 😻

This is just me, but I like to let my guy travel outside his carrier in the car & this will be easier with traveling with your husband to hold & handle one or both if they want or need. Keep a leash handy. We travel with a small, shallow litter pan & a blanket or towel that smells like "home" and also protects items in the car/seats if a cat accidentally pees. They don't WANT to have an accident, but it's not like they can ask you to pull over, and there might be a learning curve using a travel pan in a moving vehicle 😅..(I carry the scoop, extra plastic baggies & small bit of refill litter in jar/box)
Lots of times, the Cat will just choose to chill in the carrier anyway, & come out once in a while to check the view or sniff the air...monitor cold/heat & remember to offer water when you make pit stops yourself! If possible, def break up that drive over 2 days...❣😸

Hi there👋😊 I use my cat carriers as cozy beds for my cat daily and he loves them. I know that moving with cats are difficult 😕! We had a big housefire back in June 2020 due to arson on our attic in the middle of the night and we had to basically grab our cats ( we had two then ) put them in their carriers and run out. It was terrible and a big chock for all of us. We lost our apartment and the cats their things. Not everything of our belongings got destroyed ( got moved away and stored away by our insurance company) but we have to live in a not so good place for 2,5 months then we got a temporary apartment ( where we still live today ). The old place got totally destroyed and it's s under construction and repair still! My oldest cat didn't cope well with all the changes and got sick so we had to put him down in November 2020 ( so hard and heart breaking still and a big sorrow for me). I'm sure 💔 😢 that his health had to do with the trauma of the fire and the moving. He was 17 years old and we tried our best to minimize the stress for our cats but didn't have the best of tools to use and my husband and I was also so stressed out over it all, it was so hard. My cat are my babies and losing Anakin was worse than the fire, it really broke me! Trollet did cope better but now he has gotten problem with his thyroid gland so he take daily doses of a medicine ( Apelka Vet to keep his hormone level low within the normal level ). Please do what you can to make moving with your cats easy follow the good advise you get in this video! Big warm thank yous 😊 to our sweet cat daddy Jackson Galaxy from me 👱‍♀️ and my cat Trollet 🐱❤🐾 in Sweden.

My cat Maxwell Smart HATES carriers. He is a special needs kitty (ear problems) so he makes frequent trips to the vet. After forcing him into that carrier early on after I adopted him and listening to him whine and complain endlessly on every trip I tried NOT putting him in the carrier on my next trip to the vet. Amazingly he rode in the passenger seat with me and laid on the seat and even slept the whole way! Since then I take a carrier with me whenever I travel with him, but he always rides up front with me carrier- free. I have never had a problem with him being disruptive while I drive or trying to flee the car. I learned that, for him, cages were a trigger for some pretty bad memories and I will never force him into one again unless its an emergency situation and he needs to be in one for his own protection.

My Kat FLEW with me to our new home! My first experience flying with a pet! He behaved beautifully and has adjusted well to our new home. Such a GOOD Kat! It will be a year this July. Of course, I prepared as best I could and made sure I made the trip as quick and comfortable as possible. I took time to train him to feel safe & comfortable in his carrier and to allow me to put a harness on him and attach a leash, as I had to take him out of his carrier and carry him through the security check point before boarding the plane. Treats helped! Our flight lasted a couple of hours and the time in the airport previous to the flight he did great! At times, in the plane, he meowed LOUDLY AND WILDLY, as if someone was going to KILL HIM, but thank God, my plane companion was very understanding and encouraging. As soon as we arrived at our destination and deplaned, I was met by my sister and I was able to make him even more comfortable in the car. We arrived at her house and he immediately made himself at home until we were able to move into our own place. I had brought all of his "boot camp" items with me on the plane. PLANNING AND PREPARATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE! Unbeknownst to me, I followed most of your tips! I read a lot about it before I found you . . . Now I have A LOT MORE INFORMATION! Thank you Jackson Galaxy . . . 🥰

Perfect timing for this video. I’m moving in a few months with my two cats that will be about an 11 hr drive. I’ve seen this cool mesh “container” that gives your cats the space to move around the entire backseat area and has room for a litter box. So they are still contained safely in the car but have room to stretch and move around a bit. My cats are on CBG/CBD but I might just have to pick up the easy move spray and see how that compares! We’re moving in two weeks! This is the 2nd time me and my cat will be moving, and I do have an extra tip to add, in our case we’re just moving inside the city from one neighborhood to another, maybe 5-10 minutes drive, but what I learned from last time is that we move everything and leave her on a temporary basecamp as Jackson explained, and then in the new place my # 1 priority is to arrange the master bedroom (that’s where she spends most of her time, it has her essence, so I have to leave bed done, all furniture arranged so that I can go pick her up at the old house and take her directly to my master bedroom, this way she won’t be that stressed or we won’t be adding more stress by moving furniture around her, she’s very shy and nervous, so I always take as much care as I possible can to make her feel comfortable and secure, she’s my life. ❤️ thank you so much for this video, Jackson! I feel more educated now!!

@@Ayra_Asmr yes, it’s completely normal, I suggest that you give her some of her food behind the sheets, the first time we moved, my cat wouldn’t leave the bed sheets for 4 days, without using the restroom, she drank water and ate because I took her food dishes under the bed sheets and wait until she was done eating, eventually she came out, but she also didn’t know my bf, but she’s still learning how to trust him even tho he’s my husband now 😂 be patient! We already moved in to our new place and my cat is hidden under the bed, at least she’s going out to explore when nobody is around and she’s eating and going to the litter box

    Jackson, your timing is PERFECT!
Me and my girlfriend move into our new home in April!
I've got two cats, one of which was born in my current residence and has only left ONCE, to go to the vet.
She has a nervous disposition, so I've been really worried about her.
This video put my mind at ease :)
    Thank you!!

how did she do? I’m moving by car from cali to kansas (3 day trip) with my two cats, one of which gets very very stressed about just about everything. I’m super nervous about the car ride in general because he DOES NOT like cars lol.

@@avahbrousseau1644 First of all, congrats on getting out of California!!
She did well, she did a lot of yowling on the ride, but I was able to keep my hand in the cage with them and pet them. I talked to them and let them know it was okay the whole way there.
Bringing their litter box with them really helped, they immediately went to it and marked their scent everywhere.
They were 'at home' in the new home within a couple weeks.
Basecamp was the bedroom they started venturing out on the second week.
      Good luck!! Be safe!!

VIDEO IDEA: Cat-sitting, but at the cat sitter’s home. Twice this summer my partner and I cared for friends’ cats for 2-3 weeks at our own home rather than at their home (per request) while they were on vacation. They were concerned their cat would be lonely and bored with only once or twice a day visits, but the stress the cats experienced for the first 5-7 days while adapting to the new environment seemed almost cruel. We also have two cats (both extremely cat-friendly) as well who were bullied by one cat and downright stalked and harassed by the other once they were introduced. So not only was it stressful for the visiting cat, but for us and our fur boys as well. I would LOVE to know your opinion on this sort of cat-sitting arrangement, as we are considering not offering to take cats in like this anymore because of how incredibly stressful it was for all involved. Thanks for all you do Jackson! 💕

This makes sense. When I first got my cat from the shelter he didn't want to come out of his carrier when we arrived. I just opened the door, set up his litter, some food, water and left him in a small room to adapt. By the next day he was poking his head out into the hallway. I coaxed him further and further each time. Now he owns every room in the house.
One thing I do notice however (knows bad things are coming) is that whenever I sit in a low down stool and put protective glasses on to give him his worm medication (back of the neck) he wont come near me. He knows what is coming. I have to pat him (wont even let me pat properly) then pick him up, hold him down and give it to him (after a few pats).
The protective glasses are used because one day when doing it he shook his body (like a wet dog) which flung some of the medication into my eye (stings something shocking - had to rinse it out)
Thankfully he forgives me (a few hours later) so all is good.

Really great tips. Unfortunately mine have to go in quarantine for 2 weeks before they fly to join me in the middle East rules. The scent marker t shirts, bedding, all of those things are really helpful for them to take with them and for me to take for their new home. But not sure anything will help with separation of quarantine.

Hey Jackson! Quick question for peeps moving out of single bedrooms or even studio apartments. What would you recommend if you don't have an extra room to create the 'pre-move' basecamp?

Hopefully he responds, but just in case: the bathroom or a large closet, and minimize the amount of time they have to be stuck in there. (Ex. minimize the hours with the door open and/or large furniture being moved)

In a studio, the whole apartment is basecamp, but during the actual move, you can use a bathroom.
As long as you have a space for a litter box and cat bed, a bathroom works great. That’s what I had to do for my two cats when moving from a studio to a two bedroom apartment. They aren’t going to be in the bathroom long and it’s only temporary, for a few hours while you move everything else out.
Take your cats last, so everything is set up when you take them to the destination
