    Wow! I always wanted to have a look inside. Thanks. Quick story. When we moved down the road near Whit lane, mid 60's, one foggy night, me and my mate went for a walk and ended up at Pendleton church. It was very different then. The entire church looked like it was painted with matt black paint - as were all other buildings, because of the pollution and that made it look pretty spooky. Being a couple of kids, in the graveyard on a foggy night and there was no road noise like there is today, were creeped out. We got to those steps you went down (no gate then) and scrawled on the door in thick chalk was 'Big cat in crypt'. It probably just meant a stray cat or something but our overactive imaginations saw something out of Hammer house of horrors, so we bricked it and got out of there real fast! One more thing, when I was forced to do some school work for exams in 1972, I got hold of an old book about Salford. I read about a mill that was on the banks of the Irwell near the racecourse hotel. There's a weir there so that'll be the place. The story went on about the brutal owner and how he treated kids that worked for him. The book said he was buried at the top of Ford Lane, just at the side of pengy church, so I went looking for his grave but there were no graves but there was a small patch of waste ground, just where the last house is before the corner of Ford lane. I started poking around in the undergrowth and pulling up the grass and I found a gravestone, then another. I didn't find his grave but clearly that spot was a long forgotten jewish cemetery, which itself is interesting. Did Pendleton have a jewish quarter? Thanks for the interesting video.

      Oh wow I woyld love to this secret cemetery if its still there and yeah I can imagine thinking a simillar type of thing upon seeing that chalk graffiti on the old crypt door as I myself was subjected to hammer horror and a bit of nosferatu etc lol and I wouldnt change it for the world.
      Ive actually never heard anything about a Jewsh cemetery but I can ask were the headstones you found still readable or to far gone?

      Alan Starky.. My aunt Kitty and Uncle Bill and three cousins lived on Whit Lane.. I remember the old little shops.. front room was the shop.. one shop had food in the window, in the bright sunlight( sometimes) and in the middle of all the food, there was always a big ginger cat asleep.!!! . we could buy few and only certain goods on Sundays!! I am talking about the late 40's early 50's..

    When my dad was killed in December 1949 in a motor accident, I was only 9 years old at the time, but his service was conducted at this church, I dont recall much about the service, but just remember the journey to Agecroft Cemetery for the burial, sad times for my sister and I and my mum who was expecting my younger sister, thanks for the memories with this great video.

    My Grandparents Clara Buckley and Thomas H Ratcliffe married in St Thomas Church in 1917. They lived in Pendleton before they relocated to Leeds due to Grandads job. My Son was a Student at Salford University, his halls of residence was in the areas where my Grandparents lived with their parents, life differently did a full circle with my family.

    If you’re in the Middleton area have a look at St Leonards Parish, has lots of history, old graves, there is a ginnel that is known as Cankey’s Ginnel, named after Cankey who is said to have been a body snatcher from the graveyard. His cottage was at the bottom of the ginnel and still stands there derelict

    Excellent opportunity, however, I do not go with the date of this building, it is much older than mid i800s, those passages underneath look ancient, also the fact of folk "with a bit more brass" wishing to be interred down there.... It has not been looked after, so I'm not sure what the purpose is? However, good point about the brick arches, they are obviously bricked up for a reason. Seasonal greetings to you & yours. Miss h.

      @TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Miss and yeah who knows I really think Lee knows an exact build date to be honest I must admit though I do thouroughly enjoy having a good il mooch around those crypts theres something morbidly alluring about them. Anyway, sesons greetings to you too! Take care Clarky.

    • @misscoutts6193
      @misscoutts6193 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt the date he gave is when it was restored, and the pews put in. But looking at the arches & underground level, it looks ancient tbh, and i think he is keeping to the narrative somewhat... Those arches HAVE been bricked up, glad you pressed the point. I haven't been in a crypt so far on my travels, but I find much high strangeness wherever I go, I don't know if you've seen my channel. Ps, I noticed water staining on the floors of those two St Phillips & Pendleton, is there any water seepage or what is it?
