  • This is crazy that I did this! Save yourself a ton of money and rebuild your transmission yourself. The T150 is a simple transmission and gives you the basic understanding of the T18, T176, T177, T4, and T5. This video is for the T150 3 speed transmission used in the CJs from 76-79 with both the V8 and the 258 engines. It is mated to a Dana 20 transfer case. This video shows the tear down of the entire transmission and all of the pieces that go into it.

    Super grateful for your video. I have never done anything as intense as rebuilding a transmission before. With your video I was able to get my rebuild done myself and get my 16 year old daughter her first jeep! I have had this jeep since high school so was a special project. Thanks again for making this video!

    Fantastic! Here in the UK us CJ Jeep enthusiasts have to do everything DIY. This has been very educational and I thank you sir on how you have put this together. I have limited mechanical expertise however as I have already done a nut and bolt strip down and restoration on my 79 CJ7 I'm feeling confident I can do this job. Lets just hope there is nothing to much wrong with it and I can source the parts. Top banana Cool Guy.

      If I did it then you can do it. Look up rebuild kits and the different gears/synchronizers online and if you can get them shipped. Then tear it apart and find what needs to be replaced. Do you normally have issues sourcing mechanical things for the CJs?

    @cool guy - thank you thank you thank you! I rebuilt mine and caused an issue where 1st no longer works. I am convinced I did something wrong. Having good video of tear down and eventually rebuild is motivating me to go get mine out again and redo! T150 rebuilt videos are limited. AMC original training video is good but not detailed enough to find a mistake.

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeeubank9657 Repair them your self. The 2nd gear is probably a broken tooth. The hard to shift may be that your synchronizers are worn and the teeth aren't aligning well, or your shift rails are worn. It's not a complicated transmission. If I can do it, so can you.

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The T5 is definitely a different animal, but the basis of it is the same. The T5 has 2 compartments to it and many more parts because of the 2 extra gears. I have a T5 in my 84, which you may have seen on my channel, and I paid a company $1100 to rebuild it. I kept all the parts that they replaced and now looking back, it would've cost me $350 to do on my own. And that's only because I needed to replace a whole gear and synchronizing hub. Seals and bearings are pretty cheap in comparison. Next time, hopefully in 90k miles, I will rebuild my own T5. :)

    Man, I thought my clip on my big bearing was broken, that's why it had two slots going in the same direction. Thank you for showing us this, ironically enough, I used a drill bit, and put a small Gap behind one part of the groove, in the cast, to allow for prying it out slightly. We're talkin a 1/16 drill hole, really just a half of a hole. kind of a groove. This worked really good, and it is excellent if you want to save the original clip, like I did. Not that those Chinese parts were bad, but that particular clip that came in the kit, it was just too damn skinny for that groove, & I like the original clip, & o.g. tolerances much better, thank you.

    Can you replace the 3 speed with a 4 speed transmission.?? I have a 3 speed, and just not mentally Happy with it (it works fine), i've just always had 4 speeds. How difficult would replaceing it with a 4 speed be.?? And would i get any "benefits" from a 4 speed in my 1977 cj7 258 in line 6.??

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. I think the other option at that time was the T18 which I believe is a 4 speed, but incredibly rare. The T176 and 177 both mate up to the Dana 300 instead of the dana 20, so you would have to find an adapter. I have no idea if you could connect the Dana 20 to a T4 or T5. The other thing to take into consideration is the duty level of the transmissions. The T150 and T18 are both considered heavy to medium duty transmissions. The T176/177 is medium duty and the T4/5 is light duty. It's really dependent on your engine.
