I have not seen or read past season 2, so not a spoiler, but I can't help but notice how she says to Subaru "You gave me everything" "You're the one who saved me" etc. which is the exact same thing Subaru has been doing from the start to Emilia. Neither side understands.
Satella has two personalities (this should have been explained in this ep but they cut it, just like they cut all her scenes from the first season), the personality that attacked him in the past eps is the witch of envy, the one that appears in this ep is the real satella , and also that black veil doesn't exist, subaru created that in his head to avoid looking at her face, and from what satella explained in the novel the two were a couple in the past, she and subaru were a couple in the past (and in thesis are still valid, Subaru even made a declaration of love about her in arc 3 but they cut it from the anime too, everything about her was cut XD).
Reading the books is good and all, but you're not going to understand Satella much more than you do now. You'll probably just end up with some more questions.
in the witches conflict Daphne held Typhon down with her coffin because it's not sentient so Typhon can't smash it with her Pride authority. Subaru was gonna die there possibly, Echidna said a couple episodes ago it would make him essentially braindead. So he was actually trying to kill himself. Very sad stuff, Subaru is really suicidal and prone to self harm Also the way interpreted Roswaals goal here is that he wants Subaru to only focus on one thing (saving Emilia) so that he can throw everything else away for that one goal. If Subaru cares about other things, its viewed as a weakness to Roswaal and as something that will only get in the way of the greater goal he has. He thinks Subaru heroism is childish and unnecessary, so hes forcing Subaru to sacrifice something. He knows he would never sacrifice Emilia, so hes basically making Subaru give up the mansion and only save Emilia and the sanctuary. Roswaal is very selfish and thinks his way of thinking is correct, that not being laser focused on one thing will only distract you. Make you weak. So he’s trying to make Subaru just like him. His hope for Ram…I have no clue although it has something to do with her incredible power as an Oni.
If Subaru accepted the contract with the echidna, she would even help him, but she tests all the possibilities on the way to get the best possible ending, in which he dies over and over again because of her and loses his attachment to life, becoming a perfectionist who You kill yourself for any silly reason to have the "perfect day".
I don't know if the speed ever increased, but as far as the manga goes it was usually nowhere close to being caught up to the anime. We might see her more in there visually during his deaths but that's only because the anime has already shown her I imagine. Even in the web/light novel Satella doesn't really become directly prominent again until arc 7/8 and even that is briefly. S3 will be arc 5 and possibly 6 lol.
I would recemend reading the lns they are very good but at least there are cut content videos if you dont have the time to read 15 250-300 page books you could also read the free web novel but thats more of the rough draft and some things have been changed sense
Okay here some non spoiler clarifications about things in this episode: The main source of re zero is the web novel or light novel not the manga. I can highly recommend to read it but it is fking LONG. arc 4 (season 2) ALONE is bigger than the lord of the rings triology + the hobbit combined. So know what you sign up for :D Roswaal in season 1 stated that his goal is to kill the dragon that protects the kingdom. The ruler of the country makes a pact with the dragon so he is backing emilia to win the royal selection so he can get to the dragon to kill it. why he wants to kill it or what he gains from it we just dont know at this point. He wants to make emilia dependend on subaru and he wants subaru to ONLY care about emilia and only focus on protecting her and making her ruler. Since he knows he can redo things it is the perfect opportunity to guarantee that emilia becomes the new ruler if subaru makes this his only goal. So he pressures subaru like crazy to ignore everything else and basically break his heart that he becomes hyper focussed only on emilia in a way that roswaal is only hyper focussed on his goal. Subaru in the novels visited a place called the shadow garden sometimes when he dies where pretty much 99% of his senses are lost but it was hinted in there repeatatly that he has a strong affection towards satella somehow. There is a popular fantheory that gained traction when season 2 was still fresh that used some informations from season 1 to make sense of the fact that subaru and satella somehow know each other. In season 1 remember the huge ass tree that was used to kill the whale? on the tree they mentioned in the anime that someone carved something into the tree. It was actually carved in there in japanese and said something along the lines of flugel was here or flugel is from earth and was the exact same thing subaru wrote as one of his doodles when he was in the mansion in the start of season 1. This made people draw a connection between this flugel person and subaru. In season 1 they said that the only thing known about flugel is that he is a sage and he planted that tree. From the Satella story in season 1 it was said that a sage, a dragon and a sword saint sealed away satella 400years ago. This made people draw the connection between the sage flugel and the sage that sealed away satella, the connection between subaru and him is shallow as fck since only really the drawing and that both are apparently from earth is there. But Satella here says that he knows subaru and has loved him for a long time and that subaru somehow saved satella and she wants to save him back. This should be impossible since she was sealed for 400years and subaru was not around there so people theorized what if this flugel dude had something to do with satella (since some sage sealed her away) and that subaru is some form of reincarnation of him. Its a wild theory but people tried to explain why Satella knows and loves subaru and how subaru saved her 400years ago when he was not there.
From what Satella explained in this part of the novel, she and Subaru are/were a couple in the past (and there is the fact that Subaru already made a declaration of love about her in arc 3).
In the first episode of the first season, Subaru said the same words to Emilia. Think about it. Also pay attention to the title of the first two episodes

From the Satella story in season 1 it was said that a sage, a dragon and a sword saint sealed away satella 400years ago.
This made people draw the connection between the sage flugel and the sage that sealed away satella, the connection between subaru and him is shallow as fck since only really the drawing and that both are apparently from earth is there.
But Satella here says that he knows subaru and has loved him for a long time and that subaru somehow saved satella and she wants to save him back. This should be impossible since she was sealed for 400years and subaru was not around there so people theorized what if this flugel dude had something to do with satella (since some sage sealed her away) and that subaru is some form of reincarnation of him.
Its a wild theory but people tried to explain why Satella knows and loves subaru and how subaru saved her 400years ago when he was not there.
