Subaru powers dont exsist bcs he loves him self . They are called authoritys and there exist 7 of them i think , when user who has authority dies his authority goes to other most compatible person ( usually people go crazy like sins and there are some other cases , but non of them are 100% sane including subaru). When sin of sloth died his authority went to subaru cuz he is most compatible with witch factors and powers other users can manifest depends on their personality ( subaru isnt slothful so when he uses authority he takes dmg like his soul hurts and he vomits , if he uses it to protect him self( by blocking attacks) or some1 else he wont take dmg , but if he attacks with it he will take dmg)
He can also use it because of what Echidna did. Subaru drinking her "bodily fluid" was used to strengthen and stabilize his soul's connection to the Sloth Witch Factor, so that it wouldn't wear away his soul.

It’s just that there is both a literal and metaphorical reason for his control of the Witch Factors. Literally (because) he is granted it. Metaphorically (why) he learns to accept and overcome the different flaws in himself represented by said “sins”. His control over WFs is representative of him accepting and overcoming that particular trait, as opposed to the archbishops who give themselves entirely in to them.
@@Halofreakanoidyea idk they directed at you when OP was the one who said it wasnt for any deeper reason. you are right, subaru overcoming some personal flaw awakens his witch factors or even “develops” them due to them being based of the person psyche and personality. its why they have compatibility with certain people. as a side note, sloth is apparently very fickle and picky. thats why subaru and geuse are both incompatible with it. subaru seems special because incompatibility only kind of messes him up, compared to geuse who was being severely fucked up by it.
Subaru is now the host for the sloth witch factor after geause died. So now Subaru has the power to”of the invisible hand”
