Rey`s final line could have been so much better if they had her say "just Rey", as if she stopped caring about bloodlines and is going to live for herself, now. Honestly, this movie could I think be summed up by what I said when the movie ended. "Well...that happened..."

Really wish Rey turned to the dark side and Kylo's redemption arc could have been joining the resistance to turn her back - or kill her. Felt like it was really building to something with the weird mirror scene and dark Rey.

One of the biggest punch to your gut/ nostalgic movies of all time. The Land Before Time seriously makes Mufasa's death scene in Lion King look like an SNL skit.
And they did have some good sequels after it too unlike other movies which made crappy ones.

      @Codraroll 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's a really good question. I guess the original is seen as so good that it doesn't quite meet the original scope of the channel - making fun of bad movies. Then again, he's had episodes featuring bad sequels to great movies from the start, so ... yeah, I agree with you there.
What puzzles me the most is that he has never reviewed MacGyver. It was released during what the channel originally defined as the "cutoff period" of 1980-1997 or so, Doug has repeatedly talked about it off-hand so he knows what it's about, and the show *really* isn't as good as you might remember it to be. There even was a movie. It really was the sort of series someone else should remember so you wouldn't have to.

    • @Depth217

Yeah I’d be interested to see him review the sequels because I do think there’s some decent stuff there. The quadrilogy from Stone Of Cold Fire, Big Freeze, Journey to Big Water, and Great Longneck Migration is when the series had its best run outside the original.

The thing that worked with Force Awakens is at the end it left a foundation to take the series in any direction... and then The Last Jedi wiped the slate clean again instead of building off of what was established, retroactively negating the most effective aspect of TFA. Which left TRoS having to desperately scrap together a climax out of 100% nostalgia with no narrative gas in the tank. Bottom line they needed to establish and stick to rough outline instead of winging it from film to film.

Also, that would make the sequel titles be "The Force Awakens" "The Last Jedi" "From His Nap" and that would have been funny.

I guess being self-contained made it possible for the writers to create a script with a beginning, middle, and end, and then go back and fix things at the beginning if something didn't turn out right towards the end, and only start filming once it was written. The sequels had no overarching plan, and it shows. Episode 9 in particular was doomed from the onset. Episode 7 was too self-contained and didn't bother with a setup, and Episode 8 neglected what little setup there was, and left nothing to build upon. When you're building a house and the foundations are crooked, and the walls are even more crooked, the roof will also be crooked no matter what.

I wander how many of us still remember Han shooting first. I actually remember being shocked Han Solo, shot the guy. I was... maybe 5 when I first saw Star Wars. Dad brought it home, a golden and black box containing 3 VHS tapes. We still have them and they still are in decent quality. We watched it together and I was in awe. And then... comes Han Solo's talk with Greedo. Han, who seemed like a really cool guy. The sort of good-hearted rouge who agreed to help our heroes... killed the guy in cold blood. My child mind was blown. I actually thought Han would turn out to be villain or he would sell our heroes for his own skin, but... he did not. He actually rushed to help Luke at the end. That moment... I knew I would love these new movies dad brought home.
It was more precious to me, since Dad did not live with me and mom. And that evening, we watched all 3 movies together. Even though I was so young... it burnt into my memory.

The Last Jedi is what gave us RoS. Seriously That film was a narrative void: Snoke, Phasma, even Luke all thoughtlessly snuffed out to little narrative impact. Kylo and Hux reduced to bumbling jokes, Rey was rendered even more of a blank slate, Fin and Poe were left spinning in their wheels while the Resistance was literally going to have to rebuild from scratch. There almost no narrative forward momentum going into RoS. Contrast that with end of TESB where you had the setup Han Solo's rescue and and a final confrontation with Luke and Vader with a whole new context to consider.
I mean I don't envy JJ having to salvage that shipwreck what could he do? Too late to make Kylo and Hux into credible villains, too late to make satisfying character arcs for Rey, Fin and Poe. All he could do is going back into the nostalgia well again but the good will that could bring in was spent in TFA. There was just so little to work with.

@@Terminalsanity Not necessarily. I think the blame goes more to Disney/Lucasfim's lack of confidence on Trevarrow's treatment for episode IX, a lot of ideas and concepts from his vision really fed off the Last Jedi. There weren't any real retcons, and even sounded like they were giving better ideas for concluding Rey's arc. They felt the backlash was too great from TLJ, that it really felt like they needed JJ for "damage control". It's a classic case of trying to please everybody, but ended up pleasing nobody. They should've just maintained the confidence to let Trevarrow take the helm - it certainly would've helped to the Sequels to truly feel like their own thing. Have a look at any character, ship, or location from the prequels, and you can immediately tell "That's from the Star Wars prequels". In the sequel, everything looks and feels too much like the original trilogy, maybe with an extra stripe of red paint. There are Stormtroopers flying TIE fighters against "rebel" X-wings, there are AT-AT-like walkers, Star Destroyers, Imperial guards, Luke, Leia, Han ... but nothing that really looks original or new. Even the new characters had to share the screen with characters we already knew, giving less time to set up anybody. It's like the sequels leaned way too hard on the visual identity consumers were already familiar with, neglecting to make something unique for their own.

Astral projection? sure why not... but over hundreds of lightyears? ...is the force faster than light now? does it connect things through hyperspace? ...Luke didn't even know where Rey flew off to... how did Luke end up on the right planet to begin with? Honestly the thing that pisses me off is that Disney had plenty of great EU content to work with and more than enough money to get rights to all of it if they needed to. They could have adapted some amazing stories to the big screen. Hell they COULD have written Dark Forces into a movie instead of making whatever the hell Rogue One was. I will never understand why they decided to retcon decades of solid lore in favor of the bland corporate secretions they ended up sneezing out.

1:14:58 - geez, I hadn't realised until that point that JJ Abrams had effectively turned into The Man in the Planet from 'Eraserhead' - initiating a series of events and then freaking out when it all starts going haywire... AND Snoke has a passing resemblance to the baby.

There's a Lego holiday special done by Disney just FYI.
But I remember hearing a rumor once that Boyega claimed he was asked to reprise his role as Finn for chapters 10 - 13 but refused because of how he was treated while filming the movies. Supposedly the next set of trilogy was going to make him a Jedi and the force awakens was just setting him up to be. And that 7 through 9 was always focused on Rey.
But honestly; Finn being related to Mace Windu would be a great idea. Disney could reintroduce Windu in other live action format since Sam Jackson has been in constant talks to reprise his role. I'd actually enjoy a Mace Windu show or movie. And honestly; Diisney really needs to move past chapters 1 through 6. Star wars has so must lore that would give the franchise a breath of fresh air like using Revan. Show how the rule of 2 became important. I'd love to see a live action movie exploring why the G1 lightsaber was built in the 1st place. Thankfully star wars is about to explore the high republic era.
And would the father, daughter, and the son be concidered the Gods of the star wars universe? They are referenced in old Jedi temples. Although seeing a Lothal wolf in the Asohka show would be interesting.

I don't give a crap about what the rest of the fanbase says, I REALLY like the Star Wars sequels. They're a lot of fun, really good acting, not the WORST type of rehashing the original out there and when I saw The Rise of Skywalker in theaters, Palpatine gave me goosebumps since his first appearance and it easily became my favorite ending to a Star Wars movie because of how immersive that final fight felt to me. The Force Awakens is a really fun popcorn and outside of Revenge of the Sith and The Empire Strikes Back, the lore established in The Last Jedi is intriguing and interesting. I love all these movies to death and I don't CARE what other people say to make me sway away from it. This series came out when I was 12 and that was a perfect time to be a fan of the new Star Wars and I still love all the sequels to this day, especially The Rise of Skywalker when it made me push my analysis skills to the absolute limit of trying to find out why of all the Star Wars movies it moved me the hardest. The score and action is fun and I don't see it as a rehash of the original trilogy myself. I love all the characters and the stories and if you have a problem with my opinion, KISS MY ASS

while the framing devices have always bugged me for these, rewatching the sequels, reevaluating them, and than watching these. I have to give points to doug for clearly paying attention and considering stuff. It sounds patronizing but it feels like most of the star wars fanbase didn't. It feels like most people especially the people who hate it (and I'll hold my hand up because I fell into some of these) either just stright up ignored stuff, misremembered stuff or took moments without the context. A prime example for me, is everyone (this is one I did as well) is yelling about rey being a mary sue. But upon watching the movies, she does have a personality, she does fail and she's honestly really fun. The problem is that in 8 she gets sidelined and in 9 its jumping around like someone who slammed back a gallon of coffee and ten pounds of sugar, so as a result she only gets a few scarce moments to show it. Hell I would argue much more that EU luke is much more of a gary stue with how he's the strongest character evah.
Another is luke "trying to kill kylo because of a bad dream" people forget that visions are a big thing is star wars and tend to be right. And luke got a vision that his nephew was going to become the next vader. Luke has aso shown bouts of the darkside so him having the moment he does is not out of character for him. But doug also gets something right that everyone else forgets. He didn't go through with it. It was a single moment, it was gone as quickly as it had arrived but the consequences were already done. Everyone forgets this and talks about the moment like luke really did try to kill ben, but he didn't.
There's also all the shit about 7 just being a new hope 2, and doug hits the nail on the head. Sometimes to tell a new story you have to tell an old one first, and star wars has always gone back to the well of a new hope. Than with 9, yeah, TLJ nuked every plotline and than poor JJ (even if I don't have any feelings for him as a director I feel bad for the hate he gets for stuff that really wasn't up to him) having to back track and try to fix a sinking ship that was already half way underwater . Let's be honest, with everything that happened TROSW was always going to be garbage.
I respect doug for being more open minded and genuinely realizing these points while most of the fanbase just screamed and bitched about everything. It's clear he was actually paying attention unlike a lot of people

The general feeling I get is that there's so much crammed into the last movie because the Mouse only gave up money and green light to make one film. There's easily enough content, that if they slowed down and examined things more thoroughly, they could have stretched it into two or more movies.
This is kind of like when screenwriters put an entire novel into one 90 minute movie. Imagine if The Hobbit had been one film.

    • @lecafard4327

It was one film once. Animated, admittedly, but one film. It covered the main points and honestly, most of the stuff it skipped was unnecessary anyway, similar to Tom Bombadil in LOTR.

57:56 For me, the 'force projection ' wasn't all that crazy. It's basically the same as any other astral projection ability, like a force ghost. And I'm certain it's been in Star Wars before through the Extended Universe (likely several times).
What bothers me is the 'drains his life force' thing, since using the force has never really been described as draining in that way. In fact, since it's about using the energy that flows through everything, there's no reason why it would drain his life in particular, since it should essentially be everywhere.
Basically, it's dumb how he 'dies'. At most, he should have passed out from concentrating too hard.

It was called Doppleganger in the EU and no it didn't kill the user. What hurts the most about that is that Luke never gets the chance to fix his mistakes. I was hoping he'd get picked up so he could continue Rey's training proper but he died...Not surrounded by his friends and family but on an island alone.

I actually was interested in The Force Awakens. It wasn't anything new, but it still seemed like an interesting start to a new age of Star Wars.
I personally didn't like The Last Jedi. However I could still respect the fans of it. I mean, the prequels were bad, but I loved them as a child. New fans were experiencing the thrill, the action, the wonders of Star Wars just like I did.
I didn't watch Rise of Skywalker. The Last Jedi broke my heart, and I didn't want the sequels to ruin Palpatine for me. After watching some reviews and clips, I think I made a good choice.
I don't hate the sequel fans, but I am disappointed by the creators of the sequels. They could've made something way better and some of their decisions divided the Star Wars fandom into two separate sides.

The thing is, Star Wars has such a LONG timeline, that it can be ANYTHING, really. It can be a war movie, a heist movie, The Mandalorian started out as a Western. Let’s have… a Star Wars HORROR movie. And granted, I know genres are INSERTED into Star Wars movies, but they’ve never committed to actually just making a genre Star Wars movie. I guess it all comes back to PLANNING. The fact that Disney never had a concrete outline for this trilogy just baffles me. The “STAR WARS STORY” idea is genuinely good, so keep that. I do believe they won’t repeat their mistakes with this new Rey-centered trilogy, but it does mean that it’s time to FINALLY bring in the BEST Star Wars villains, and yes, even better than Vader and Palpatine: THE VONG. There’s just one problem: the Vong are the most interesting Star Wars villains, but they’re DEFINITELY the most R-rated, as well. They’re basically CENOBITES, and I don’t know how you portray them in anything less than an R-rated movie. Their technology is ENTIRELY biological. And they revere and enjoy pain. They look, act, and very much are TERRIFYING, and I’m not sure Disney is gutsy enough to do it. Plus, Rey is basically the ONLY Force user now, and they’re so powerful that, in the Legends books, even with all the OG characters (plus some allies we DIDN’T get) Leia’s kids, and an OVERPOWERED Luke, and it’s STILL BARELY enough to win. Maybe the Rebels crew from the AHSOKA show will take up the slack. They are bringing back Thrawn, and while Thrawn is AWESOME, Thrawn also ties heavily into the Vong’s introduction. Hell, there’s even a retcon that Palpatine took over the Galaxy just so he would have an enormous Imperial Army b/c he knew the Vong were coming, and, it DOES make a lot of sense. It doesn’t retroactively make him altruistic, but it does give a little more purpose to his actions. If you think about it, Palpatine does enjoy his power, but in the OT, he almost becomes a ghost to the Galaxy for years, and Palpatine DOES enjoy the fight. He wouldn’t be a Sith if he didn’t. And yet, he never gets to DO any of that after winning. So I do buy into the idea that he knew about them, no one believed him (people seem to forget anything that happened over 20 years ago in Star Wars, for some reason), and he did want revenge anyway.
