Runaway Brain is an Academy Award nominated, 7-minute-long, animated short subject produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation Paris, and starring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Pluto. It was released on August 11, 1995 attached to the feature A Kid in King Arthur's Court. In international theaters, it was shown in front of A Goofy Movie.

@@crazysilly2914 It’s a found footage webseries called Tribe Twelve. Unfortunately the creator/editor got outed for grooming fans and it is now cancelled, though I would recommend it’s superior parent series EverymanHYBRID or the Night Mind videos collecting it.
@@crazysilly2914 I believe the victims were underage at the time (Adam Rosner is the creator's name.)
However, the fictional series EverymanHYBRID which was made by different people I do completely recommend. Rosner's portion of the fictional universe (Tribe Twelve) was okay but obviously hard to watch now given what happened.
Well they didn’t call him professor Suicide .
Mickey's humour comes from reacting to the situation around him, not proactively causing a problem for someone else. It's how he made the world laugh during it's most depressing time.
... I don't know about the world. Donald duck have always been the most popular one of those 2 in many European countries :)

Also at least in Denmark I don't think it is anywhere close to a tie, It is actually hard to explain just how main stream Donald Duck is.
Donald Duck comics is the one comic you can find on normal supermarkets shelfs and their sales has been strong the last 70 years. Not quite as popular as they have been, back in the 70's they apparently printed nearly a quarter million of each issue. That is in a country with a population at the time on just around 5 million. Also on top of that the issues were weekly so lets just say that Donald Duck used to be pretty damn popular.
He is not quite that popular anymore but it is far from considered a rare hobby to read them and I think it would be quite rare to find a Danish person which at some point haven't read some Donald Duck stories.
It should however be mentioned the issues usually contains a few Mickey Mouse stories ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@silak33 they do its called Topolino. Its widely distributed in Italy, Spain France, Germany, Belgium etc. They obviously consolidated both comics under one name in the Netherlands.

My second comment was more about the close tie thing... It can be read in 2 ways. As in close tie because Donald Duck isn't much more popular than Mickey any places, or close tie because it's somewhat evenly split between places were Mickey is more popular and places Donald is more popular...

Allwine is forever Mickey Mouse and Taylor is forever Minnie Mouse, they will never be forgotten.
As much as I love Chris Diamantopoulos, Bret Iwan and even Walt himself, Wayne will always be the Mickey Mouse of my childhood.

This short introduced me to the phrase "fever dream." For decades, I honestly thought I had imagined this. Finding out it was real was an unnaturally insane and surreal experience for me! Probably because Disney has tried to bury this. But I honestly wish they wouldn't. This is a very interesting and creative short that does unique things with Mickey Mouse!

It's a fighting game. Clearly Dopey had to kill the others one by one before facing the boss character witch. Then of course the true final boss is the prince, and after he's eliminated there's nothing standing between the short mute baldy and the girl of his dreams.
I love this one, fist watch on a "best of Mickey mouse" VHS. And I aways look as if it was a real movie, the animation reminds me os a lot of 90s animated movies.

Love this short! I watched it before "A Goofy Movie" when I was two.
Fun Fact: my dad worked at Disney Feature Animation in Orlando during this time. He got access to a "Runaway Brain" poster and thought I would like it in my room. Nope. I spent many sleepless nights just staring at "monster Mickey's" sharp teeth and wild eyes...waiting for him to eat me. And now, I'm tougher because of it. lol

And when Julius Roars at Mickey in the climax, You can see that Zazu flew out from his mouth
One thing I especially love about this short is how they put so much visual difference between real mickey and Julian in mickeys body. Disney dosent like his image being messed with too much, just look up the concept behind thinner/scrapper form in epic mickey for refrence. But here they not only let him act like a feral animal they designed him like one too. The scraggly fur, his greyed face, yellow eyes, claws and fangs? That's a good stretch off what they allow for mickey to be.

A Goofy Movie is an amazing movie, especially since it gave us one of the greatest dances ever, The Perfect Dance. In fact, we danced that for Goofy at Disneyland. 😃

This is more or less on the same level as some of the Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse shorts, and Disney+ has all of those. I don't know what the heck they're waiting for.

It seems that whenever Kelsey Grammer is involved in an animated project, he’s always typecasted as the villain. For instance, Dr. Frankenollie in this cartoon, Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons, and the prospector in toy story 2

And let’s not forget in terms of live action other than his famous run is Frasier Crane on both Frasier and Cheers he also played Hank mccoy/ beast in the X-Men the last stand film he is one of the highlights of that film if you ask me.
I wish Runaway Brain was a movie. It has potential in my opinion. As a short, it still kicks ass and Mickey Mouse is iconic as ever :D Love this short so much ❤

It's nice to see Mickey, got to just be himself for a day, in this production. Also, Pete's voice acting of Mickey's voice, is spot on in this. Who knew Pete, was such a talented Seiyuu!
This is hands down one of the best Dark Toons episodes I've ever seen.
My other favorite was the one that he looked at with James Rolfe

That's what I've been saying. He's basically the biggest animation icon ever, and yet after nearly 100 years he's never had his own cinematic adaptation.
Hands down one of the best Mickey Mouse cartoons. Right up there with Plane Crazy, The Band Concert, & Steamboat Willie.
I actually saw this short when I went to go see "George of the Jungle."
That short really scared me as a kid, seeing a twisted demonic version of an innocent character was uneasy for me.😰

I absolutely LOVE this short! This was the short that made me like Mickey as a character. Even as a kid I liked darker cartoons, and this actually made Mickey kinda bad-ass. This short also kinda inspired the dark/comedic tones I like to write. Hopefully one day I get around to actually putting my stuff out there

I saw it before Tarzan, and honestly, the doctor dying was the scariest part to me.
It was fun, one of the few times Mickey was pretty cool, and a nice change of pace for a character usually doing lighthearted things.
I remember seeing this as a compilation of shorts on a Mickey Mouse VHS/DVD. A bunch of Disney characters would present their favorite Mickey Mouse shorts, like Mickey's Trailer and Mickey's Band Concert. It ended with Ludwig von Drake putting this short on, saying it was nothing like the shorts presented before. I remember being creeped out by Evil Mickey, but also fascinated by the animation.

You should review the Billy and Mandy episode, "Little Rock of Horrors". It's the episode where Billy meets a singing asteroid that consumes brains, who is voiced by Voltaire.
I know that segment of the episode, too. I love it because it’s a musical for the most part. Except for the beginning and the ending of the segment.
One thing I never thought I'd see in an official Disney film is Minnie buying a actual bikini xD

As a kid I thought the trailers for this was a damn fever dream I had, that is until the day we hit our first computer.
Oh gosh me too. I could specifically remember the chair scene for some reason and some monster mickey face but no matter where I looked I couldn't find it. For years I thought I just dreamed it up before I found a random picture of a Juli-mickey figurine when I was looking for a drawing refrence!!

I had a VHS tape that was a collection of classic Mickey Mouse shorts and Runaway Brain was the final one.
The imagery and, weirdly enough, some of the sound effects (particularly Frankenollie's laughter and Mickey's yelp when he gets shocked) definitely creeped me out, but nowadays I enjoy it a lot more. Its great to look at and the action and horror elements are a lot of fun, especially considering it's a Mickey cartoon.
Same thing for me too I wish this awesome short was released on disney plus or at least a bluray compilation of the best of mickey shorts
I vaguely recalled this from a compilation VHS with all the obvious classics, with Runaway Brain being touted as the most recent release. I can't say I was scared of it, I actually liked the the more gritty angle they went with which is something you don't really see anymore!
Sidenote, the "You monster, me Mickey" at 7:33 is a reference to 'Mickey's Man Friday' from the 1930's, which is a *little* odd considering the racist undertones in that one...

4:04 yup, Bill Farmer has been voicing everyone's favorite Disney dogs for over 20 years
Runaway Brain was included on a VHS released at the end of the 90s, it was a series including the classical characters with selected shorts. It was called Mickey`s Best (this was the title in Norway anyway) and I remember really enjoying Runaway Brain and how different it was from the regular Mickey cartoons. I never noticed Zazu before, that was a fun gag.
Fun fact: Pinto Colvig, the original voice of Goofy, also did Pluto.
And as Doug mentioned, both characters are currently voiced by Bill Farmer.

But just Balloon and Balloonra. Julius moves too fast for Balloonga to be effective.

I've been trying to remember this cartoon for over twenty years. I remembered watching a super dark and kind scary Mickey cartoon when I was a kid but I could never find out what it was. After a while I just gave up and accepted that it never existed and that I had just made it all up.
To be honest, this cartoon would have definitely been a guilty pleasure of mine if I were to saw it as a kid. No doubt about it.
Omg that episode of Pingu “Dreams” scared the hell out of me when I was young. Although I don’t know if others will find it scary, I think it was just the creepy sea lion that did it for me.
Yeah that one deserves it. I didn’t even grow up with it and it still scares me. There’s also a behind-the-scenes video of that episode where the Walrus speaks sped-up German and stutters when he licks his mustache... cuz he wasn’t scary enough.

I watched this a few years back. When I saw the part about “lobotomy lane”, I immediately face palmed and said “cartoons are the only place where that would not be immediately seen as a red flag”.

8:19 I'm pretty sure that's actually someone doing Traditional Animation In Perspective, not CG. I mean maybe they might have drawn over a CG wireframe as a sort of rotoscoping assistance, but that's clearly cel animation.
i loved runaway brain, but trying to find it was almost impossible, disney + UK didnt have it in the mickey animated stuff so i was a bit sad but eventually i found out and showed my friends in America who HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT! which shocked me the most as it was something i was brought up on when i was younger, this specific toon was etched into my head the art syle the darker tone the monster himself was just something You dont forget as a kid, really enjoyed it and glad your bringing some attention to a classic.
Disney has this movie sealed up in their vault for eternity, they hate it and never want it to be released again from what i heard. In their studios its their way to show how to not do it

5:22, like alice in wonderland, my 8th favourite disney movie of all time
Do 'The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy' episode 'Tickle me Mandy'. The main scary part is the dream that Billy had after spending a day with a fake Mandy. Some of the images are a bit scary, not as scary as Courage the Cowardly Dog's level of scary, but memorable.
And everyone who’s seen it knows about “That Face.”

id say these are all darker then that , chocolate sailor (billy turns into chocolete cannibalizes himself and dies.) , wisbone (the monkey paw wishing skulll episode) or halls of time (the episode where they keep aging backwards till they disapear).
They are fine, but I think Nergal Jr episodes are creepy. His first appearance and the episode he personate Ms. Butterbean. They are creepy enough than the ones you listed.
He should also do the episode where Billy gets laser eye correction by Grim’s staff after he refused getting laser eye surgery for his poor vision and ends up getting psychic powers causing him to see people getting terrible fates. That one was a weird episode. 😨😳
I knew you would eventually watch this for Dark Toons. It's definitely one of my top ten favorite Mickey Cartoons.
I saw this film in a bonus feature in the Mickey Mouse Volume 2 dvd series. I was like 4 and really enjoyed it and still do to this day. It’s crazy to think Disney never liked this film and won’t show it anywhere else.

The shoot of Mickey arriving at the doctor's place (12:07) is exactly like the priest's arrival in The Exorcist movie/poster.
0:58 probably because it was shown in front of A Kid In King Arthur's Court, that was probably the problem. Apparently, this played with A Goofy Movie in the UK in theaters.
I could remember the premise of this just from seeing that title alone. Another fun classic that makes you wonder: What the hell were they thinking when they made this? And honestly, kudos for them for doing it.

I remember seeing this before "George of the Jungle". Incidentally, I was in middle school when I first saw it as well. I believe I liked it just fine.
3:55 ... This seems to be a tradition. The original Goofy, Pinto Colvig voiced Pluto as well.
It’s possible that Donald Duck and Pluto might secretly like this version of Mickey Mouse the most just so that they won’t have to worry about Mickey taking adorable likings to creatures that are smaller, cuter and adorable than them like what’s happened in countless cartoons in which they were in😏
