+Anthony Seyffer The whole point of "menemism" is that it satirizes (albeit in an unfunny incarnation) third wave feminism and much of what people find unappealing about it. In theory (read: I HOPE TO CHRIST THIS IS TRUE) people are not supposed to take these complaints seriously. No, there is nothing wrong about a woman (in this case Furiosa and Immortan Joe's harem) taking a lead role and kicking ass as opposed to exhibiting passivity, cowering in the face of danger, and needing a man (Mad Max) to kick ass on their behalf. What menimists are allegedly "satirizing" in the instance of Fury Road is feminism's complaint of a lack of strong female roles in media/society. I hope this helps. And no. +dragon1130 So I did some research (and by that I just looked it up on google) and apparently Meninsts are indeed a real thing and it was meant to be either a satire of Feminists, or the representation that men and women should be equal in all countries and tend to focus more on third world countries than a first world country where, by law, all genders are equal. Either way feminists apparently get pissy about this which either, A) proves the point of the satire, or B) really baffles me because of what feminism is supposed to represent (Equality for men and Women), and I would assume that feminists would want equality in all parts of the world and not just where they live. I don't think either one was what Doug walker was referencing in the original video and I think it was supposed to be a parody/satire of the Men only club culture and he just needed a clever name. Little fact about myself, I'm NOT a fan of the Disney Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. I find it to be a poorly written story that depends more on nostalgia and twists for the sake of a twist than what works for the narrative, and I feel that Rey is a rather weak character. You want to know who's may all time favorite character in Star Wars? Mara Jade. Nothing amuses me more when idiot meninist find my articles about why I dislike the Star Wars Disney Era only to find that they are just opinionated pieces that give the films credit where credit is due, condemns cast and crew bashing, (seriously insulting and harassing George Lucas and Kelly Marie Tran is NOT cool), and have layers upon layers of pro-feminism/pro-equality writing. And they get even more annoyed when I don't give my gender because they just can't give a proper insult to someone if they don't know their gender. XD Meninist exist, sadly, but they're really easy to out think as 11 times out of 10, they're all morons who have no idea how to handle someone who actually has a brain.
I do not know who Mara Jade is aside from she was in Star Kids Ani: a parody (which I recommend if you haven't seen it, pretty homage to star wars). As for Star wars, I like the new movies. I think the older ones (episode 4, 5, and 6) are better, and, the prequels are far FAR worse, but I do agree Rey is a rather weak character. As for meninists, part of the reason they are so easy to argue against is because they are hard headed ignorant bigots (kinda the same reason it's easy to argue against flat feathers and conspiracy theorists to be honest. What saddens me is that these people are so hard headed that it is almost impossible to actually argue with them because they will just invent new reasons, won't listen, or just flat out ignore facts.
To give you an idea of who Mara Jade is, imagine if Indiana Jones was a former Assassin instead of an archeologist. She is THE Queen of Snark, is arguably one of the least skilled fighters/force-users in the series and has the Worst Luck possible. And she's a TOTAL Bad Ass. She's the one who defeated one of the most powerful Dark Jedi in the franchises history, matched wits with the Thrawn and his successors, and has gotten out of some Really bad situations by the skin of her teeth just through sheer force of will. I love Mara for the same reason I love Indy, they're awesome despite of, or even because of, how much they screw up. It also helps that Mara has a character arc that is NOT about supporting the men in the story. Luke, Thrawn and Karrde ARE influenced by Mara but HER journey is NOT about them, rather they are part of her journey. Mara actually has a lot in common with Rey, (possibly even more then everyone is aware of if the Leak is true) as both are the overall protagonist of their respective trilogies, they both have a mysterious past and both are skilled Force Users. However, for me, Mara zigs EVERYWHERE Rey zags. Without going to far into spoilers/possible spoilers, the mystery behind Mara is resolved at the end Heir to the Empire whereas Rey's mystery isn't resolved until E9, possibly. Mara's skills in the Force are given an explanation in Heir, whereas Rey's skills are ONLY explained in the tie-ins. And Mara is an active protagonist who's role goes beyond her relationship with Luke and others while Rey is more passive who spends most of her time trying to better Luke and Kylo while hardly, if ever, talking about herself. Honestly, check out The Thrawn Trilogy, it's a great read and that's coming from someone who has to deal with a rather annoying dyslexia. Every issue I have with the Disney Sequel Trilogy ISN'T present in TTT. The plots are more original, the villains are intimidating AND intriguing, everyone is highly competent, and the heroes all have such engaging character arcs. More power to you for liking the Disney Sequel Trilogy but I honestly just think that TTT is a better written story. One that's influence over the series is STILL being felt to this day.
At the time he made this I don't think he knew that meninism was a thing. He just made it up as a joke towards the types of people who act like real meninists, but without any sense of irony. you know, those people we see in youtube comments everyday that make you loose hope in humanity when you find out they aren't ten year old little brats, but instead grown up adults who should know better than to say these sort of things in public. The same types of people who complain about the new ghostbusters cast being all women.
Yeah, Ghostbusters may not the best example, but the point is, these are the same people who sit here and claim its going to be bad souly on the fact that they are women actors replacing men. Even if the Ghostbusters remake was good (or even looked good) these people would still complain.
Come on man. First it is a joke, sooner or later it becomes a cult. Like the fucking Flying Spaghetti Monster or Scientology. Or No Ma'am :D. The phrase "this is why we can't have nice things" does not comes out of nowhere.
Unfortunately, this is a true fact. These things that are meant just a joke become so big that they are treated as a real thing by people whose....well lets just say there average intelligence is equal to that of a tree frog. Unfortunately, those people don't know it's a joke...or they do in which case it becomes even sadder at that point.
+TheMovieDoctorful Well here and the Hocus Pocus vid, he did make fun of it at least. Besides, MM: FR was still playing in cinemas when that vid was uploaded.
There's an argument about whether the next Zelda game should even have the option to choose between a male or female main character. A majority of the vocal community says no. I on the other hand like to refer them to this video.
to be honest, I think it has more to do with Link already having a gender. Its like saying the next metroid you get to choose Samus's gender. it has less to do with gender politics and more along the li es of changing a pre established character. It just feels weird for some reason. I for one would welcome the option to play as a female in Zelda, though hiw about this. Instead of choosing Links gender...why not let you play as Zelda or Link? I wonder how people wkuld feel about that? Also, apologies if anythinvs hard to read or mispelled. im typing. this on my phone and my gif is it hard to get everything right even with auto fill.
+Renaldo 'K95' Moon We have a male Lara croft... he's called Nathon Drake. We have a male Samus, he's called Master chief...we have a...well, no we don't have a male Bayonetta, though now that thought is both terrifying and awesome at the same time. I know thats not exactly what you meant...ehh I just wanted to make that joke. But regardless, while It would be easy to give samus a male character model, the problem is, that all of Samus's games star....well, Samus. From start to finish its the same character. same with the other games you mentioned. tomb raider stars the same Lara Croft. Bayonetta 1 and 2 both star the same bayonetta. It's been established that Link, in Zelda, is different form Ocarina of time Link,Twilight princess Link, Skyward Sword Link, and so on. This is why it makes more sense to gender bend Link than the three you mentioned. Because the lore of the Zelda games is the way it is, it allows for a few games to have a different Link. Hell, the legends within the game only ever refer to "The Hero" and rarely, if ever, give them a gender. It's gonna be hard to find a female equivalent that you'd want to gender bend because, most games, the story is a continuation of the heroes exploits. The same hero, different adventure. Like I said, instead of wasting time gender bending a character, the best thing to do would be introduce a new character. I mean god knows Nintendo will Never use Linkle outside of the Hyrule warriors franchise but, wouldn't it be cool to have the option to play as her or Link in the next Zelda game?
Thats the reason why Link makes sense to Gender bend in a game. since it's a different Link in almost every game, Why not make one where the reincarnated hero is, instead of a man/boy, make them a woman/girl. Or they could pull a windwaker and make the female hero, not the chosen one, and instead has to go through the process of inheriting the Chosen ones power (AKA the Triforce of Courage). You could keep the name Link (or Linka, or Linkle or whatever you prefer for your feminine pronoun.) and just not mention the original hero's name (again, Ala Windwaker.)
I don't know if "Meninists" were ever a thing, I don't know if they were real but stupid, awkward people will always exist and hopefully videos like these can show the total fallacy in their thinking.
God this speech is so much more important right now. There are guys put there that would probably call Kratos from God of War a pussy because in the new games he isn't constantly screaming anymore.
I don't know what that is, but it sounds like a Sonic the hedgehog fan group (probably Sonic/Amy shippers) so...they already confuse and frighten me in ways that no other fanbase can.
+BirdInerd But without the vids i will not argue with that. At least the force awakens made their own characters, the ghostbusters reboot felt like a gender swapt
It was supposed to be a satire of the Feminist movement. Nostalgia critic made up the term for his video without knowing it was an actual thing until after the fact. In a weird, round about way, his satire is the satire, on the satire...I think...
You don't win cars on Jeopardy you moron, you win cars on The Price is Right. Get your hosts right before you try to burn people with game show jokes. What you additionally fail to recognize is that the satirical nature of "meninism" has basically run afoul of Poe's Law. In attempting to be satirical it operates as a more covert form of mysogeny--ie. by implying that feminist issues are a joke and should not be taken seriously. It is impossible to tell the difference between someone who THINKS they are being edgey and satirical by mocking the straw men they construct as representations of feminism (which are in fact a small minority of feminists) and those who are using it as a cover for their contempt. Between someone who thinks it is a joke and is therefore unaware of what the movements contributors are actually saying, someone who misses what is supposed to be a joke and thinks it is what it appears to be on the surface, and, indeed, a Poe. That is, between an idiot, an asshole, and a troll.

That was intentional. I just wanted the speech.

This review made me a nostalgia critic fan man I love channel awesome.
Honestly looking back, Doug was kinda ahead of the curve in making fun of the Andrew Tate manospehere type guys
Thank you!
XD
Meninist exist, sadly, but they're really easy to out think as 11 times out of 10, they're all morons who have no idea how to handle someone who actually has a brain.

Critic does know that meninism is a joke towards feminism right?
At the time he made this I don't think he knew that meninism was a thing. He just made it up as a joke towards the types of people who act like real meninists, but without any sense of irony. you know, those people we see in youtube comments everyday that make you loose hope in humanity when you find out they aren't ten year old little brats, but instead grown up adults who should know better than to say these sort of things in public. The same types of people who complain about the new ghostbusters cast being all women.
dragon1130 despite it being unfunny and unoriginal....
This review turned me into a nostalgia critic fan. Also tamera is hot.

i know, right?
Nice straw man
There's an argument about whether the next Zelda game should even have the option to choose between a male or female main character.
+dragon1130 Exactly my point. Instead of just changing gender, why not make a similar game with a female main character? That's not Link with tits.
I mean, Link is never the same dude so why can't one of the Links be a girl.
I don't know if "Meninists" were ever a thing, I don't know if they were real but stupid, awkward people will always exist and hopefully videos like these can show the total fallacy in their thinking.
those 57 dislikes must be sexist
God this speech is so much more important right now. There are guys put there that would probably call Kratos from God of War a pussy because in the new games he isn't constantly screaming anymore.

Funny thing is it was the Feminists taking issue with the film. Evidently they said it was sexist because the villain engaged in sex slavery.
