Part 1 here: • A New Dawn: The Restor...
Every now and then a project comes into the studio that is so desperate for intervention that the scope of the work involved seems insurmountable. Yet those are just the types of projects conservators thrive on; the ones that look disastrous, require a phenomenal amount of work and creativity but if treated right and with care and precision will respond beautifully.
Such is the case with this copy of Guido Reni's masterpiece "L'Aurora". Though the artist is unknown it was clearly executed with great skill and for a copy the scale is rather impressive. The same cannot be said about its condition. Having suffered water damage there is a tremendous amount of paint loss and what paint remains is perilously attached to the canvas. Several massive holes, tears, and canvas losses have also threatened the structural integrity of the work. Suffice it to say this will be a magnum opus of conservation.
But that's what we live for.

Ah, yes, spitting tacks. Eventually, and with enough practice, Julien will be spitting them into the canvas like a Looney Toons character spitting watermelon seeds - no hammer needed.
This is the dream of every painting conservator, obviously.

Even so, if you're a student your instructors will not let you get away with avoiding your demons in this way. I remember in uni (fine art major) I had difficulty with ears at one point. I would cover them with hair or put them in shadow often to dodge the issue. My professor noticed. She said nope, you are going to do ears and only ears all month. My midterm project was one big very detailed ear. And she was right. It worked. I got a lot better at them. That same lesson carried forward to anything else I would struggle with in future. Bad at something you care about? Do that and only that again and again and again and again.

After watching hours and hours of Julian working I got up the nerve after L'Aurora part one to take an embroidered cloth sampler out of its frame. It was so discolored from time and generations of smoking that I hadn't hung it in years. After using techniques and materials learned over 60 years of washing fabrics I produced a much lighter and brighter piece. I gently pulled it into square and dried it flat on granite. The frame it was in was too large so I'll take it to the framer. Thank you, Julian. I could probably restore the Shroud of Turin. :)

I know how you feel. My grandpa was a mechanic. If it had an engine he could fix it. About a year ago the radiator on my little POS car crapped out and instead of calling my auto shop I went to TH-cam and fixed it myself. I was so proud of my work, but the entire time I had to stop myself from breaking down crying because it made me miss him so badly. After all was put back together and the radiator back in action, I closed the hood and sat down in front of my car and had a good long cry. My husband found me like that and thought I had hurt myself or that I had completely screwed the car. Nope, just missed my grandpa terribly.
Funnily enough, since then I’ve been more at peace with his death, and now take the time and effort to fix things myself if I can, always with a nod and a “Thanks Popo!” Little things like watching someone else spit tacks or, for me, smelling that oily mechanic smell, can vividly bring back those people we miss in our minds. Cry if you need to, it’s healing!

Or they'll be like "This guy really knew his stuff but boy were we terrible at conservation back then, so really, it's a nightmare." haha
But yeah, I love watching him care so much about the art. Like, yeah, we have to take his word for it, but so far everything seems to stack up! And I haven't seen any other conservators saying he's ruined anything yet haha

    • @r.brandt2246
      @r.brandt2246 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

They probably won't. One, because if it needs to be restored again then the original conservation has failed at that point and won't be impressive. Two, because there will probably be newer methods that make Julian's methods outdated and bad to look at. And three, something Julian has talked about or alluded to many times now, many conservators already dislike how he restores paintings.
Julian is a private conservator so he can do it however he likes as long as the client is happy but he has an extremely heavy hand and paints with a wide brush, figuratively speaking of course. He is known for this kind of work so he's kind of stuck with clients that ask for this stuff now but many people who are going to reverse what Julian has done are going to be shocked at how much work these paintings have had done to them and they likely won't agree with it.

You can see that I'm covering up the new piece of wood that I've added, and so for all intents and purposes, no one's ever going to know that I worked on this stretcher - that I repaired it, that I put all of that work into it. And that's okay. It's not necessary that anyone sees that. What is necessary is that it provides good support, and also that it's straight and true, and that it doesn't deflect the painting. So that's the most important thing.

As na artist and an art-history nerd, I think that the most important part of retouching paintings (if necessary/requested) is putting yourself in the shoes of the artist. Seeing not only the lines and colors, but also the type of brush strokes, paint consistency, and the general process of making the painting (for example painting light to dark or on a pre-colored canvas). I love seeing your attention to detail with texture!

If he worked at a museum as a conservator, he wouldn't be doing retouching like he does here. I don't think it was shade at all, I think he just wants to make clear that he works for private clients who want what they want, not necessarily what's "best" for the painting from a historical perspective. He's just defusing the armchair critics before they have a chance to comment.

I watched the last part, where you showed the before and after, at least four times (once on 0,25speed) and it's just so beautiful. At the beginning of part 1 I was sceptical, why go through So Much Trouble and work to fix a painting that's essentially a copy (even tho I know paintings can have emotional value and the artist clearly put a lot of effort in it) but I'm so glad your client wanted to get it fixed now I saw the end result. What an amazing job you did

Some things just need to be returned to the what was and then as is to share the beauty captured by a artist from another time, critics and purists be damned. Is anything man made ever perfect, nope, but the pleasure from re-capturing the beauty and having a glimpse of something better is just worth it. Restoration is also a art form, it is in my opinion a means to give some life back to something that was slowly dying and re-introducing the moment and emotion from a different time and making it available again for more enjoyment and pleasure. Bravo! For those that don’t agree, go and stare at the cracks in you walls, frame them, sing arias to them, I just don’t care.
