As a longtime fan of both Death and Morbid Angel, I think Trey and Chuck are both sides of the coin. Whereas Chuck can paint a picture within the depths of the human mind and its intricacies, Trey can do the same but submitted to chaos. They are the Ying and Yang of Death Metal, both developed the art into new extremes.
Trey and Chuck are both gods for different reasons, in my eyes. Trey is probably the most creative/weird death metal guitarist who ever lived and Chuck was more emotive and melodic in terms of his playing. They're both death metal legends!
I still think of him as one of the most creative guitarists I've ever heard. He actually digs in and goes to some strange dimension with his solos. Often solos from other guitarists put me to sleep, but he's one of the few where his rhythm, harmony and solo work is interesting across the board. I also like the fact he appreciates the occasional blended in single-coil for a bit of texture. I don't know anyone else who mixes chaos and control in such an interesting manner.
His creative mind is insane. On most of those earlier live performances his chapel of ghouls solo genuinely sounds like the conjuring of spirits and demons fighting with each other. His ability to create an image with his guitar is incredible and his off the wall techniques are unmatched.
One of the top 5 metal guitarists of our time. The Eddie Van Halen of death metal. I mean that in the best possible way. Nobody can touch his solos and he set a new standard with his riffs.. and his tone. Dimebag... Thordendal.... Shuldner... he's right up there with them.
Why compare Chuck and Trey? Schuldiner chose his to be ordered, rhythmic, perfect, and executed correctly like every album he made with Death, Trey on the other hand wanted to be the new Hendrix/Van Halen but in a more extreme genre. He decided to be psychedelic, creative, powerful, and have the speed and craziness like swing or bepop.
@@strawberrypoison7964 pretty sure Azagthoth wasn't inspired by Chuck. I read a Guitar Player magazine many years ago where Trey critiqued Overactive Imagination from Death and he didn't recognize who they were. He also didn't care for their sound or mix.
Trey absolutely crushes! One of my more favored and inspirational DM guitarists along with Chuck Schuldiner, the guys from Nile, Vogg from Decapitated, and Muhammad Suicmez from Necrophagist!

Chuck innovated death metal, no doubt, but his songwriting and Death's overall quality is vastly overrated. Trey is arguably THE death metal god. Chuck had cool riffs but he could never string them together in the momentum-carrying and magical way Trey and Morbid did.
Facts...I been seeing all this Death hype all over TH-cam so I checked em out...not impressed. You put it perfectly..gonna check into morbid angel next.
lol chuck destroys trey. chuck was a WAY better song writer, much better soloist as well. oh and by the way he also sang while playing the guitar. altars and blessed are both great albums, not a fan of any of their other work though. treys solos are often cringe worthy. he is desperately trying to be EVH. just comes off as a bunch of noise and guitar wankery. lol
@@krisdahlin4386 Chuck a good songwriter? His songs are clunky and so disjointed it gives you musical blue balls. Composition > individual riffs (Trey has better riffs for my money anyways). Soloing is a minor part of the bigger picture. After Scream Bloody Gore, Death is mediocre at best.
@@seventybelow139 lol mediocre at best after scream, give me a break. many believe symbolic is the greatest death metal album of all time, i personally think that distinction goes to human. chucks a far better writer. you know how good your discography is when their isnt a consensus best album. i feel deaths best is obviously human. a large majority think it is symbolic. many think sound is the best. seen a fair amount some that like scream the best. morbid angels best album is unquestionably their debut. i do like blessed as well, but i am not a fan of anything post blessed. does trey have some killer riffs, of course he does. i particularly love chapel of ghouls. every album of deaths is great, you most certainly cant say that about morbid angel. lol.
Dude definitely has talent. Although I'm not a fan of his style ... you can tell he can shred. I wonder how much soul he has with his guitars though. All I hear is a bunch of out of place jumping back and forth and up and down ... I understand this is death metal but he seems to have a bunch of out of place riffs that he tries to cram together ... idk
It sounds like doing a bpm challenge with 80's techniques, both the guitar and the drum. The musicians seem limited by the music genre on the songs, should move up to 'core' bands or experimental bands.
Man, i mean i kinda respect Morbid Angel in a certain sense but they sound awful to my ears. I could never get over 2 songs by them in a row. That fucking blast beats and double bass by Pete Sandoval make me fueled by rage, that's fuck terrible. Then Trey Azagthoth (or whatever the hell it is written, i also hate art names so bad) comes in with a pure Kerry King style and adds crap to the already shit annoying sound. Honestly i can't get how somebody can compare this band to Death, probably i'll never understand that. 2 completely different genres.

Legend has it that Trey made a pact with the devil to up his guitaring skills, but the devil was like, “dude you’re too good, I can’t help you”.
Do you think maybe he became the Devil’s champion after Steve Vai was beaten in Crossroads?
when you watch Edward van halen you can really see his technique in trey's style, which is a good thing.
