Calling Trey Azagthoth and the guys from Vader "posers" for not listening to death metal on his own time is beyond stupid. "Why are you listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd" because it sounds good dude. Exclusively listening to extreme metal is insanely narrow-minded and a sign of autism.
Funny enough I'm autistic, and grew out of the "only listening to extreme metal" thing by the time I was like 21. My playlist has Skynard, Sadistik Exekution, Eazy E, Robert Johnson, you name it.
Most good musicians listen to stuff besides metal. Doesn't mean they don't listen to metal. I'm 46 and still mainly listen to metal but also listen to other stuff too. It's been that way since I was 18.
Morbid's most recent album, Kingdoms Distained, is a beast! One of their best albums and brought them back to form. I kinda hear you on not going back to a band after they play their "poser" card, but if a band puts out one album that's completely off the mark, then subsequently returns to their true form, I wouldn't say that having produced that one anomaly qualifies as a band showing its "true" colors, but rather just experimenting or perhaps losing their way for whatever reason. 😂
Commenting on Vader listening to Skynyrd on the tour bus, I've heard touring bands say they avoid listening to metal on tour because they're basically living metal on tour, so they'd rather listen to something else. Guys with cred like Matt Harvey and Joel Grind have said they do the same.
He was shouting out Portal and other bands a few years ago. Pretty sure he just listens to a heap of different genres and loves music in general. Most people don't just stay the same their whole lives. Especially if they have done a ton of psychedelics.

Granted Illud is the weakest album but personally I like the guitar work on Destructos. It’s weird riffing, Dave’s lyrics and performance is the weakest part of that song. If Steve would have had a go at it and added the death to it, it would have been an extremely interesting song. The songs Dave wrote are the songs that ruined the album by far. His silly rockstar pomp and lyrics ruined f’d that album up beyond repair. Had Steve got his hands on it, it would have sounded much more appealing and interesting. Bottom line, musically there are some redeeming qualities to some of those songs they were just done with the wrong people. It sounded like Dave took way too much creative control, that is what destroys that album. I’ve been a fan since the beginning so I love all the albums for one reason or another. Personally I LOVE Heretic. The riffing is twisted and the the drumming is f’n destructive. The synergy of the drums and guitar is next level, a peak in their creative collaboration. A mix that favored the bass guitar a little more would have been welcome but the riffing is top shelf stuff…
