I remember watching this on tv on the day and was absolutely thrilled. 1987 was a great year for Steven Roche and he did it all against great adversity which made it all the more incredible. If ever you need a real boys own hero then this man and his 1987 were it

I remember watching this live with my dad and as we saw Roche coming around that last bend we were jumping out of our seats shouting with joy, shock and excitement. It was the greatest comeback in cycling history. With todays coverage and radio communication there would be no way this could ever happen again that Roche could close the gap un-noticed by the opposition or the media. The good old exciting days before big money and marginal gains destroyed the individualist.

and by the way as thrilling as Le Tour 1987 was I just want to say to the present day Le Tour Camera Team what a fantastic job you do and what a great showcase it is for France and its people.

This is the 2nd greatest tour in the 80's (after 89) What courage. What a fight on La Plagne.

I remember Magee's commentary. He'd heard that Roche was motoring and wasn't surprised to see him cross the line. Ligget hadn't heard about this, and he ended up giving the better commentary that better captured the excitement of what had just happened.

Great footage! It's hard to find TDF stuff from the 80's these days...

funny that fans still supported the tour where as in track and field a lot of fans turned their backs

Indeed, procycling mag I think, said much the same when they listed this clip in a recent issue. They said Evans might have won the Tour had he done the same at Plateau de Beille last year, instead of trying to stay with Contador & Rasmussen.

kimmage pissed me off because he made a comparrison to lance and cancer...I myself dont like lance..and he wont be taken down because he is a cash cow..between his sponcers and things he generates alot...id love to see him go down but he wont...now kimmage, to use cancer or to even suggest it is bad...I know what he was trying to say but he picked poor words in saying it..

Cheater.

Stephen Roche was a good pro, and great TT rider, but theres no way he would have won the Tour de France in '87 if Lemond had not been in that horrible hunting accident.

great days of cycling.. they ALL fooking doped get over it an they always will...... if it makes great drama like this let them get on with it.. the radios and corporate approach has changed the tour its now a bit predictable and lost the drama...
