89 Tour was probs best but this one was an absolute classic...how many mountain finishes?? man it was awesome...I can remember being glued to the TV every night for the highlights and jumping up and down when Roche reeled Delgado in at the top of La Plagne.
great music by john tesh, too bad we cant find a dvd of the race, i was 11 years old and i recorded every weekend on abc. Thanks socialrider909 for the memories
Yeah, I agree. This year's tour de france has been the best, but it was like waiting every 5 days for a decent stage to show up, and even then it's not that hard.
Amazing----listening to this one I remember I had this very segment converted from VHS to cassette and I used to ride with the 'walkman' loaded up with these audio clips.
I dont mean to be off topic but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Kayson Randy I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The glory days of cycling, before EPO and 8 teammates to chase attacks down. Team leaders burying themselves to stay in contact. Actual suffering on climbs. Sadly, not likely to be seen again.
Interesting, as well................ Track times from say the sixties to the eighties (some back into the fifties) and they are still holding many times as the fastest times to date, start to finish. This on 21, 22, 23 pound rigs with no more than 8 cog rear at most, many 5, 5, 7, friction shifters. SEZ IT ALL!
A great battle! I too have this on vhs but sadly the tape has deteriorated. Phil at the top of his game with Tesh providing the backing. What more could you ask for? Thanks for the memories.
I'm Irish and I still think this was the best TDF in Irish history. Roche was my hero, and Kelly, and I had a PDM jersey and PDM bottle for my rides (48yo now) but....I am not so convinced now that Roche was not doping. After the exposure of Armstrong, mainly by David Walsh (my new hero), watch the video on TH-cam on the Irish Late Late show where Roche and Walsh confront the issue "Stephen Roche David Walsh Late Late Show 2002." I would be curious to hear any opinions. I'm a cycling enthusiast, not a hater. Doping ruins it for me though. Makes me feel like all those mountain climbs I did in my youth would have meant little even if I did get to be professional; ultimately, to gain recognition/success all you had to do was dope up. And you HAD to. I believe that yes, you also had to be fit but it wasn't enough if you wanted to make a living at it.
If Roche was doping why did he let Delgado ride a minute up the rd in the mountains and then nearly give himself a heart attack trying to get the time back. Yr not looking at this logically. Look at Delgado at the end of the stages, totally fresh and Roche was destroyed because he was trying to complete with a drug addict.
@@taichihead42 It was the very fact that he caught Delgado, against everyone's expectation at the time, that was extremely questionable. Similar to what Landis did that crazy day he rode into the yellow Jersey. Also, very Lance-esque.
i totally agree mate the 80s early 90s wer the best couldent wait 2 get home watch the tour even b4 a sundays club run i would put on a tour vid and watch this mountain stage todays tour i dont know half of the riders its not exciting nomore,
Does anyone know why they don't have difficult tours anymore? I mean this year has all of two maybe three HC climbs. Also, back in the day they, particularly the early 70's through the late 80's, they wouldn't have so many transfers and rest days. If they needed to get from one point to the next, they would race there. Just curious if anyone else feels like there have been weak tours lately, especially this year- 2009.
As good as this is, find Phil's actual live commentary at the finish, he is screaming "it's Roach it's Roach"!! Goosebumps
man I used to love these John Tesh tracks! used to put on the walkman and go riding while listening to this stuff!
Great charge by Roche on the flat...With countryman and personal idol Sean Kelly in goup to help. Great moments!
John Tesh Synth Music was the EPO of the Era!
THE DRAMA!!!!!
I wish I could find this music to put in my playlist so as to have as I bike on the road
It's all on spotify
early yanni was actually some of the most memorable of that era's tour de France soundtracks

Muy bonitos recuerdos con sentimiento
Nowbody would try to do the same as Roche did today.
It's a shame since this is exiting to look at :)

I think that this is probably the 2nd best tour ever (after 89)

@Kayson Randy it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out !
@Nathanael Titus Happy to help :D
Highlights would have been better. Music was naff and we missed out on Phil's "IT'S STEPHEN ROACHE!" thrilling commentary.
muller74 YOU ARE CORRECT It was another KAS rider. My bad -- but boy I still love this segment!

Probably no EPO but I'm not so convinced Roche was clean. See my post.

@Jaeger17
Unfortunately, Kelly had retired from the race earlier on in the race with a broken collar bone.

I have the 1985 thru 1991 Tours on DVD converted from VHS w/ commercials edited out
Yeah almost nothing is hard enough these days...Amazing how they struggled up to La Plagne in 1987 and how it looked like a walk in the park in 2007

Yeah, this music really sucks :)

@@spybaz Your a moron if you think Delgado wasn't taking drugs.

The KAS rider i would bet is a french rider named Gilles Saunders.
Hey Baneg, look at the scoreboard/GC for the 1987 Tour. Go Roche.

Which Stage# is this?
I remember watching this tour, it's stuck in my mind as one of the best ever. Shame about the awful 80's music in the background though.
Rachel, don't worry about the music, the John Tesh's pieces gave a more dramatic background. This tour and the tour of 1983 have been epic!
classic stuff--you can find the music by looking for old Yanni and John Tesh new age CDs (Tesh before he started doing the gospel stuff)
Amazing to see all the columbians back then....Pre EPO
@banegagol doesn't look too sucky to when he leaves the spaniard crying into his cornflakes.....boohoo
@banegagol Ní leor teanga amháin ? Hablan ingles, cobarde espanol.....you are the one full of shit.
Really really annoying background music like a cheap knock off Rocky soundtrack. Painful.
