He was also our 4th best president during the time Mt. Rushmore was under construction (i.e. pre-1923). Our other best presidents came after that (FDR, JFK, LBJ, Truman). Only best option would've been Andrew Jackson and we all know how he treated the Native Americans.
Teddy Roosevelt is the reason why the entire world has the conservation is has. Look at the age of the vast majority of National Parks in the world, the VAST majority are After Roosevelt, not before.
Rushmore is BS. BUT Teddy was crazy important baller who fought corruption, championed the infant environmentalism, and redefined the role of president. He should be shown giving a 30 minute speech after getting shot (which happened), not that stupid fat-shaming hunter bit.
Elijah Reeds teddy was originally a sick Kid who could barely do anything then eventually he became a boss pretty much ending the Spanish American war with his rough riders and lead the charge that caused a major route of the enemy. He also passed the national parks act and (I believe not 100% sure) had a bear as a pet
Correction. He had a speech written in a hardcover book and that prevented the wounds from being fatal. He was shot while exiting his vehicle. He gave a 90 minute speech before getting medical attention.
He was shot because he was running for his third term after Taft, his successor, did a lot of things Theodore hated, and was shot while delivering a campaign speech. The man who shot him thought running for a third term was unethical, but Theodore's folded up speech blocked the bullet, and after coughing and sensing no blood Theodore decided to continue the speech which lasted for 50 minutes
Those great American leaders were chosen to lead us by God and that's why their faces appeared in the mountain. I think a new one show up in a few years too once America is great again!
The most shocking thing I learning while living in Canada is really how horrible the indigenous people were and are treated. The government can give themselves a day off to remember the atrocious things they did, they can waste tax payers money on meaningless new buildings and give them Cree names. None of that changes the fact that the First Nations people feel they are social outcasts in their own land.
Teddy, Aside from shooting stuff... basicaly made our park system and more importantly made the panama canal. Extremely important for transportation, economy/trade and defense.
Also to add being the first American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, making Conservation a national issue and being the first American president to invite an African-American to dine with him at the White House.
Mad Maxx Correct, but in this case there was a binding legal treaty that was meant to protect Sioux claims to the land. One which the federal government ignored, breaking the law.
That literally describes the entire world. At some point in history, nearly everyone had to kill, and steal land from each other. Why do people think that stealing land from Native Americans is a terrible thing? Should they feel sorry for the others that had land stolen other than natives? Now kill me.
Ike Rants Other way around. Roosevelt was out hunting bear in the wilderness. Some pals had wounded a bear and wanted Roosevelt to take the finished shot for the cameras. Roosevelt declined because he thought it was disrespectful. And so, the story spread across America until a toy shop owner in NY decided to make a toy bear in honour of his President. The teddy bear.
Roosevelt was also the first president to travel to another country while in office, which was pretty important for establishing the United States as a notable country.
He's also just the most badass president ever. Asthma? Pfft, I'll just work out until it fucks off. Literal uphill battle? Pfft, I'll lead the charge. White House? Let's get some Ruskies in here and wrestle!
Coupledyeti Vonvanderburg don't forget he literally got shot right before giving a speech and proceeded to give the speech with the bullet still in his chest.
Adam glossed over the main point of this monument. Each President was put on for there parts in explosive growth periods of American history. Washington: self explanatory Jefferson: Luisiana purchase (about 1/3 of the U.S) and the Lewis and Clark expeditions (mapping and their for claiming huge areas of the west) Lincoln: Won the civil war allowing U.S to keep southern states, he also build railroads linking the east coast and west coast cementing U.S claim on the west. Roosevelt: Fought in the Mexiccan American war secureing the southern western quarter of the modern U.S. territory, He also commissioned the Panama canel and the U.S established many island territories over his term.
@Levis. H maybe except natives are, even today, still stuck on reservations with dilapidated schools, underdeveloped infrastructure, and levels of poverty that haunt them from the Great Depression. Our government is supposed to be funding and helping run these schools but we don't. This leads to a dropout rate nearly twice that of the national average. This poverty and lack of infrastructure leads to a cycle of increased crime and poverty. Even if your equivocation about history was correct, native americans aren't "whining about it like little bitches" because of something in the past. They are fighting against active systemic discrimination. But enjoy that "both-sidescream", im sure it's as cold as this take.
@Levis. H I don't like either party. The Democrats pander to minorities but ultimately want to just stay in power however possible. The Republicans are the same, except they pander to people who don't like minorities lol. The reservations are areas where natives have been "allowed" to self govern (which is so laughable on it's own like yes let's allow you to make decisions about your own communities, so sorry about the genocide btw). Certain communities have earned income from the gambling and casino laws but factually they still face systemic issues against their community. Canada has similar issues with the First People in their country. If you're interested I recommend looking into the issue, especially because it isn't US specific (although the US has a large part to play).
slipspacer88 Actually, it's pretty big. National parks help preserve many endangered animals and just animals in general. They also protects the trees from being cut down, therefore giving us oxygen. Roosevelt founding national parks is actually quite big in the scheme of things, and it's very honorable too. He helped preserve some of the most beautiful places here that would've otherwise been destroyed.
Yet compared with the rest of the gang, it is really weird he is up there. The National park is nice and all but one is the first president, one wrote the declaration of independence and one ended slavery. Its like saying beyond that three dudes, the best thing or the greatest thing a US president ever did is making the national park? Ranking president by their achievements and the forth place is already Teddy?
Its good yes, but not by the standards of other presidents, it would relatively difficult to find any main name president who didnt do something good or "pretty big" on atleast one task
Teddy Roosevelt was an environmentalist, created the National Park Service, and created the Panama canal. I know he didn't create it but he advocated for it and signed the bills.
This is more than a little insulting; Roosevelt did more than hunt animals. He laid out the ground work for National Park system; furthermore, Roosevelt cut down on big business to help the middle class and poor. Do the people who made this video consider these acts somehow disagreeable enough to disparage him in this video?
It's possible to argue that now, almost a century later. At the time though, it wasn't really possible to judge his achievements and their lasting effects, so the reason he's on there is just his protection of the sculptor.
To be honest Teddy Roosevelt really deserves to be on mount Rushmore. Open any damn biography about him and it will state that he was an effective and badass President. He more than deserved his spot on the mountain
kaneki k 1. Where are you facts about his IQ, and why does it make him not deserve it? Washington’s battle strategies were stupid as shit. Does he deserve to be on the mountain? Also, he was an upper class southerner born in the mid 1800’s. What do you expect?
"Built on stolen Native American land." Adam, EVERYTHING in the United States was built on stolen Native American land. That's not even a point worth arguing
They said in the video, it was land that was specifically "given" to the native Americans. They signed a treaty saying the land belonged to the native Americans, then went back on it. That's why they said it was stolen. Or, more stolen than other land. I'd just like to point out(and this doesn't make it okay) but throughout history stuff like this has happened again and again. It's sort of just that in this case this is the one that is still around without being undone by a revolution or cultural assimilation. It's still crappy, but it was a crappier time.
To me, if you enjoy America, you are as guilty as you claim the white men of today should feel. You are advantageous to what America is today, and what we have today wouldn't exist if not for the "stolen land". So think about that, as you enjoy riding the coat tails of thieves and murderers, as you claim them to be.
If something isn't claimed, it isn't stolen. The Native Americans didn't even have proper civilizations and hence writing, formal politics, and land claims. They never claimed the land they lived on, making it Terra Nullius and up for grabs. In case of Mount Rushmore though, there was a formal agreement, so Adam has a point.
Teddy got shot in an assasination attempt while giving a speech. Instead of getting help he sat there and finished his speech. He also shook the shooters hand after he was apprehended before getting complete help. He was that badass, I think he deserves a spot on Mount Rushmore
You're the first person I've seen in the comments to notice that! (Also I was looking for confirmation that I wasn't racist for mistaking some other three random black guys for them because it would be kind of odd for some pro wrestlers to be in a random internet short)
I thought no one lived here but alas, here I sit in my South Dakota bed in my South Dakota room, counting my money from a South Dakota bed, dreaming for a big city far away from East River
"It was never about the money; we just want our land back" If the rest of the video wasn't funny, I would have cried at this. Edit: I don't know what's happening in the USA right now, but this comment section is one of the stupidest I have ever seen.
The content wasn't funny. The way it was presented was. That's how Adam Ruins Everything works. Nothing he covers is funny but the way he does it often is.
The Crazy Horse monument deserves more press. I'm kinda surprised it didn't get mentioned. It was started as a direct response to Mt. Rushmore and is still being worked on today, mostly because the creators refuse to accept any kind of government funding. It is way more impressive than Mt. Rushmore and I continue to be sort of shocked more people don't know about it.
@Fred Cline really? It's definitely still being worked on. It's really slow, but it does change. The whole face was finished in the late 90s and now the hand is getting worked on. It's been a good 15years since I've seen it and I'm not saying it's night and day since I last saw it, but you can definitely see the arm and hand is way more articulated than it was before.
LOL, it's still being worked on because the "creators" use it to pad their lavish lifestyle. They get millions in donations every year and make almost no progress at all. It sat with NOTHING being done to it for decades when finally people started challenging that they weren't making any progress. Then they had an anniversary, like the 50 years anniversary, and then suddenly they were blasting and carving until you could see his head and the outline of the horse. Now it sits again, and that was 20 years ago, making no progress. It's a private business and they could give a shit about actual Native Americans.......they are just getting rich off their private enterprise. Point of reference........all of Mt Rushmore was completed in 14 years.
Teddy Finished the Panama Canal of course he should be on there. Plus what do you mean "It's small" you can't feasibly carve it much bigger on their budget. And the reason it is placed at that specific spot is because Gutzon wanted it to be at the perfect angle with the setting of the sun to make it look even more inspiring. There is plenty of other spots he could have chosen in SD but this video fails to mention the effort put into it. Gutzon did die but his son Lincoln Borglum took the project over and "finished it". Granted it wasn't what the initial model. I mean originally it was only supposed to be 3 presidents. And the Hall of records is not "in the heads" it is behind the heads. And the reason they did not finish the mountain was because WW2 broke out and the funding was cut. And the monument only cost just under 1 million which back then was a pretty penny. But really not that bad for a national monument. And yeah of course South Dakota wanted to use a monument for tourism, other states do that all the time with attempts on promoting tourism. Borglum actually envisioned the park to be free entry. Which was true for a while (sadly not to this day), actually to ensure that it was there for the people Lincoln Borglum was the Superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in its first years of operation starting in 1941. I like this monument as much as the next and I don't like to see it bashed by information that is very skewed. In my opinion it will always be that "Shrine of Democracy" that Borglum Envisioned".
Jeffrey Keiter look just because Borglum had a hardon for them doesn't mean it is incredible Egyptians built pyramids way before that, not only taking into account the sun but also the stars. That dude was a selfish dick who couldn't follow what he was ordered to do just cause he was in love with teddy so like calm down
He's actually right. I'm from Keystone SD. You know the little town two miles down the hill from mount rushmore. The only thing i would have added would be that Borglum's original plan was confederate heros as he was an exmember of the KKK but didnt recieve funding. I dont know why he changed so dramatically but it was taught at the Borglum museum.
Especially at the time of planning Mt. Rushmore, Roosevelt would have still been in recent memory yet long enough for people to appreciate his accomplishments. He's really the first president of any note following the unremarkable presidents of the Gilded Age.
Not only is it on stolen Native American land (well basically all of the country was stolen but that's another can of worms) it's also sacred land. It's like if America destroyed Jerusalem and built a American themed amusement park where the city used to be.

Rushmore is BS. BUT Teddy was crazy important baller who fought corruption, championed the infant environmentalism, and redefined the role of president.
He should be shown giving a 30 minute speech after getting shot (which happened), not that stupid fat-shaming hunter bit.
He broke up standard oil in fact, pretty much the first president to fight monopolies cause no one could buy him like they did everyone else
Don't Forget Trust Buster. but His successor William Howard Taft Busted more trusts than Roosevelt.
TheSaucyPickle True, you could argue that Teddy set the precedent though. (No pun intended)

To be fair the sioux were a bunch of rapist killers
Elijah Reeds teddy was originally a sick Kid who could barely do anything then eventually he became a boss pretty much ending the Spanish American war with his rough riders and lead the charge that caused a major route of the enemy. He also passed the national parks act and (I believe not 100% sure) had a bear as a pet
RJ Bull he also lived most of his life with a bullet in his chest
Man got shot and his Speech saved him. He is awesome, kin of a legend
Adam should talk about the "eagle" cry actually being from a red-tailed hawk.
He's saving that for his clip on the loon, laughing kookaburra, and Wilhelm Scream
Teddy was by far one of the coolest presidents, he got shot with a bullet in the chest and stood right back up, (his spectacle case saved his life)
KellerTheG Agreed. Andrew Jackson was the coolest president of them all for “killing” the bank!
Correction. He had a speech written in a hardcover book and that prevented the wounds from being fatal. He was shot while exiting his vehicle. He gave a 90 minute speech before getting medical attention.
MrPewpyPants 50 minute speech*
He was shot because he was running for his third term after Taft, his successor, did a lot of things Theodore hated, and was shot while delivering a campaign speech. The man who shot him thought running for a third term was unethical, but Theodore's folded up speech blocked the bullet, and after coughing and sensing no blood Theodore decided to continue the speech which lasted for 50 minutes
Temporary name I think he was shot because he opposed the creation of a central bank, or the IRS, or something to that effect.
Roosevelt: "Wow.. you're like obsessed with me."
That was a good laugh.
As his "gun" goes off. Hmmm...must have really made Teddy happy!
And there's people out there that still think it happened naturally.
Please... tell me that was actually a joke
Hahahaha that's a *joke*
Please for my sanity
Those great American leaders were chosen to lead us by God and that's why their faces appeared in the mountain. I think a new one show up in a few years too once America is great again!
well much like your birth, nothing happens without someone getting fucked. All you can do is be thankful your not the one taking it in the ass.

Literally isn't their own land, or can we say the same thing about Germans living in what is now wester Poland?

"Stolen native american land". That describes literally everything in North America, but okay.
Mad Maxx Correct, but in this case there was a binding legal treaty that was meant to protect Sioux claims to the land. One which the federal government ignored, breaking the law.

that's never happened before ever! OH MY GAWD

Nickoli Lion plus he's named after a bear, that's pretty badass
NPS = Another form of land theft from the Indians LOL
Ike Rants
The bear is named after him
Ike Rants Other way around.
He also cut the America's in half
Roosevelt was also the first president to travel to another country while in office, which was pretty important for establishing the United States as a notable country.

Washington: self explanatory
Jefferson: Luisiana purchase (about 1/3 of the U.S) and the Lewis and Clark expeditions (mapping and their for claiming huge areas of the west)
Lincoln: Won the civil war allowing U.S to keep southern states, he also build railroads linking the east coast and west coast cementing U.S claim on the west.

That's what conquerers do. Don't get conquered is the lesson, I suppose. LOL

+slipspacer88 let me see what you've done with your life
slipspacer88 Actually, it's pretty big.

Robert Rovira Not really. He was a fine President but he didn't do anything of significance
Robert Rovira JFK was the best president.
It's possible to argue that now, almost a century later. At the time though, it wasn't really possible to judge his achievements and their lasting effects, so the reason he's on there is just his protection of the sculptor.
Tasha Marks yea but the statue wasn't built when he was around

"Built on stolen Native American land." Adam, EVERYTHING in the United States was built on stolen Native American land. That's not even a point worth arguing
LuicD Which is why America sucks in general lmao
They said in the video, it was land that was specifically "given" to the native Americans. They signed a treaty saying the land belonged to the native Americans, then went back on it. That's why they said it was stolen. Or, more stolen than other land.
I'd just like to point out(and this doesn't make it okay) but throughout history stuff like this has happened again and again. It's sort of just that in this case this is the one that is still around without being undone by a revolution or cultural assimilation. It's still crappy, but it was a crappier time.
ah but it's stolen native land, that they agreed to give back, only to then steal it again. which is worse... apparently.
Why would you say Roosevelt did nothing? He is the reason we have national parks in the first place...

Fascinating. And it’s still being worked on?
Awesome monument. Better than rushmore.

Jeffrey Keiter look just because Borglum had a hardon for them doesn't mean it is incredible

Masters of Mediocrity lol site a single source besides this video where you got that information
I don't really think you can cram all of that in a 5 minute video
