      IKR. I mean, I have adblock on virtually every website except TH-cam, but I never get ads that cater to me. Heck, if I see an ad that I even somewhat like, I won't skip or delete it because I WANT them to stop showing me ads for junk I hate. But despite that, Google still doesn't have any idea what I like.

    The scary thought of it is not actually the fact that they record your information. It's only being read by an algorithm and doesn't impact me in my everyday life. The problem is that all this information is being stored somewhere, which makes it possible for somebody to read. Not an algorithm, but a real person. Imagine a world, where the police can just go through every personal information of a suspect, read all their messages, searches and ads. It's a terrifying thought.

      Well I don't find it a big deal, the police is a public service, even if they find out about your pornography search history or other embarrassing information, they will just ignore it because they don't even know you personally, they just need the information about their case. Actually if accessing this information is useful for them i'm in, if you are an honest person who does nothing wrong you shouldn't worry about anything, even if the police find out some secrets like if you cheat on your wife/husband they will ignore this information unless it is useful for research

    When I was pregnant with my 3. child I didn't watch any pregnancy related stuff because I already got everything for my previous children and didn't need anything. Then I wrote in a private message to one friend in Facebook that I'm pregnant. But I didn't exactly write that I'm pregnant, I just wrote that we soon will be five. Next time I used the internet it was full with pregnancy and baby adds. Diapers, bibs, baby clothes, pregnancy vitamins etc... I didn't know if I should be impressed or scared.

      @pm0913 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Enablingbuzz That's true. But it's slowly appearing with premium and ad-free packages popping up everywhere. And people complain about them like they're the damn plague, just as much as they complain about the ads. ("I hate those damn ads, but I'm not about to pay them a whole 12 dollars a month!! They're taking my money!!") People are getting the option but many I know refuse to take it because they're cynical about the capitalist schemes to make more money - those same people will unplug and damn near throw out every electronic in their house after watching an Edward Snowden documentary. It's just annoying.

      @pm0913 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Enablingbuzz I may be misinformed so whatever you find, let me know (I'll do some searching of my own in the meantime). And I know of the spotify, and Pandora packages. Not much, but it doesn't advertise - which I assume means doesn't sell the data since you pay. Google has TH-cam Red that comes without ads with a monthly also with no ads. Realistically, TH-cam is run by Google so they'd probably use it anyway. To avoid the whole Facebook thing I'd imagine you can just stop using Facebook. However, I have only watched this one video and don't care much about anything I do on the internet being tracked by the government. The only thing that bothers me about ads is how long they take to load when my internet is slow. I have elementary knowledge of topic so I don't have much else to say. But I've been convinced that I should be somewhat concerned about this.

    • @hozukishike
      @hozukishike 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      if you're not a cyber criminals, high government officials or celebrities, you should be fine and this shouldn't be your concern. I mean they collect data about your personal preferences to sell you stuffs that you might be interested in, it could benefits you in someway, like products that you would never know it exist without those ads, that might help with the efficiency of your jobs, or a stuff of your hobby. There are so many people using the internet that your data is just there to represent a group of people with the same interests and nothing more, they don't have any reason to spy on you. Also, corporation and government have their own network to transfer informations and doesn't have to send email through internet services like Yahoo or Google.

It really isnt like they show here, which normally theyre better about not fear mongering, but there isnt some scary guy looking at what you do. Really its just a data program that read what you typed like "I love burgers" then ran it through multiple calculations then slotted your info with a million other people then sold that bundle to fast food and other burger chains. Its not some scary big brother thing.

      Besides, they made a really bad comparison
      "your interests, your personality, your relationships, your privacy, those things are priceless, but you gave it away for just 12$"
      You didnt give it away, they are still priceless. Like a company selling the information you gave them about being interested in modeltrains will stop being an interest all of the sudden. All you get is a company trying to make you buy modeltrains from their shop instead of a different one. They buy the info they need. It's not like McDonalds wants to know what kind of car you own. They rather want to know when and where to advertise. If you take a daily scroll through facebook around dinnertime, you're going to end up getting ads from the highest bidder. It's quite simple actually.
      As for privacy: your data is being collected, by computers, then scanned for certain keywords and keyphrases, by computers, then are compared to your internet behaviour, by computers. Then the same computers make a small file with what you are interested in. Companies buying the info are actually buying in bulk based on interests and only need the names and links to accounts and IP.
      I'm not afraid of any company untill ads are specifically refering to things I did earlier, like "You think those clothes are too expensive in store X? Click here to get massive discounts."

      @Divaad95 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Plus, google would earn a lot of goodwill if they let you pay for their service instead, which will be a lot better and more profitable for them than people using adblock (ublock origin) and anti-tracking addons (EFF's Privacy Badger) plus realistically it would probably be a part of your broadband package rather than something you purchase individually.

      Although, if they were paid then not everyone would go ahead to be on a single site (ex: Facebook). There could be many other choices that are based on different models. Or also there could be higher packages that include total privacy. By refusing to pay anything you also reject customer protection and allow them to do what they want. Paying isn't necessarily the solution but it gives more leeway to have actual solutions.

    • @smallsignals

      Commander Ondolemar.
      I think you should discourage your mind from making such links. I am making this comment to visibly show that this kind of biased thinking, building a connection where there isn’t one, can lead to misguided associations.
      The reason you posted it was context. Otherwise, there would have been no reason to post it. The word ‘sugar’ is irrelevant here, yes, except for in the capacity that it exists in two distinct places within the context of this video? So if it’s not the form of the word that matters, then we could replace it. With say, ‘Mark’? So Mark Zuckerberg and let’s pretend the other guy was called Mark Johnson. It would seem a bit silly pointing out that they’re both called ‘Mark,’ do you agree?
      So, the connection might stand out because the element ‘Zucker’ is less common to you and more noteworthy.
      But it gets worse, because in this analysis, really it would be Mark and Marty because they both weren’t called Zuckerberg. So it’s essentially you going, ‘look two people both have a name that start with “Mar”’
      Back to context, the only reason then that would make this worth pointing out is if you see some sort of connection there. And due to the context of this film, it makes it almost sound like you’re implying Ethan Zuckerman can’t be trusted because he has Zucker in his name. And in context of their geographical location, it starts to feel like you’re implying something vaguely anti-Semitic. And that’s something I don’t think was your intention.
      So maybe just don’t post every thought that comes into your head because I just did that in this comment and we can both see how pointless that was, can’t we?

    • @goodname67
      @goodname67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Google is primarily an advertising and analytics company and they really obviously really profitable. Buying an ad service from Google, Facebook etc is quite expensive and there's videos only comparing different ones in terms of driving up your business. It's targetted like the point of this video, if you know someone buys watches you a watch company might get an advert on their screen, if 1 in 30 buy it there's a large profit. A local service like a plumbers might target local people who have looked up/talked about plumbing related needs. Apparently it works.. the money flows.

      1. What would they threaten google with? they have top ddos protection obviously, they cant sue them...
      2. Also, Google only sell this to secure third parties, if you look into the terms and conditions they promise that you are treated like a number and that no human will see your name, address etc.
      I see what you mean but... yeah... no one should worry about this.
      edit: also, this is only a problem anyway to the people that post everything they do on social media etc, the person in this that bought a burger was only "attacked by ads" because he posted about it :/

      Im not as sure about that one as I mostly avoid the site completely, based on what I do know however is that the data is just used to target adverts and particular people, once again, a human will never see it and if one does your name will be protected under an ID key.
