    I'm 51 and 7 weeks into BJJ and love it, this gives me hope. Didn't even know there was a AARP division. Lol.

    I'm a 62 yo white belt and I found your match with your competitor a true inspiration. I look forward to competing in a year or so. Keep up the good work and have fun.

      How old were you when you started? I’m 56 thinking about giving it a go with my 17 year old son. Seems pretty intimidating to get started…

      @@joesph9748 I just started BJJ at the age of 46. I’m so glad that I did. It is an amazing sport both physically and mentally. I also just had my first competition and had a great time even though I lost both of my matches. It is intimidating, but can you think of anything in life that is really worth doing that isn’t intimidating or challenging. Just take that first class and believe me you will be hooked. See you on the mat!

    Great job! I'm a 53 year old white belt too, I recently had my first tournament and it was really fun. I just wish they had master classes for females, us old ladies ended up going against women half our age.

    Ross and Rodney. That was phenomenal. Keep it up. Im a 46 years old white belt with a decade of love for the sport who just decided to start. While I thought I would be able to get some of the first moves, I was stunned of the sheer tendon force that bjj creates. I am 1 month in and STILL did not get over it. But its the best sport in the world. It truly is the human chess game. Hope I never stop.

    Fifty three? YOU'RE a child. I am 73, just started and have been going to class for just short of 5 weeks, attended 29 classes. I need to drop 15 more lbs and gain some stamina. Back injury a couple of years ago has slowed me up but I'm working on it. BJJ is great. I have a boxing, wrestling, TKD, JUDO and Krav Maga background.

    How many times a week do you train with hard sparring and how many days after does it take you to recover fully? I'm 48 and after a day of hard sparring it takes me about 5 to 7 days to fully recover, if I force it and try to train hard earlier then my performance suffers because of my injuries that I'm very wreak and feel over trained

    • @JayGaulard
      @JayGaulard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It takes a while to recover for me. I'm 48 too and I used to train at least 3 times per week. Now I teach/train once per week and I definitely feel it for a few days. It's weird, it seems like I sleep better the second night after training than the night of.

    • @theFormidable1
      @theFormidable1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JayGaulard I used to box in my teen years and then watched the first UFC back in 93 so I slowed down with boxing and took jujitsu at Relson Gracie's school got my blue belt after training off and on for about 6 or 7 years then had to quit because of life but I kept staying fit by boxing training and could recover with 2 or 3 days. My last street fight was at 43 against a 33 year old boxer/wrestler and I actually felt strong and got him in an arm bar which stopped the fight, but even for that brief 5 minutes it was a real struggle then 5 years later i decided i wanted to get back into jujitsu started training the past 2 months as a white belt again but I still can actually hold my own against blue and purple belts at my school but I do notice the recovery takes so much longer than when I was younger. I'm kinda glad to hear it's not just me at this age haha, but yeah I feel my shoulder blades are sore especially since I sleep on my sides and now I cut down my training to twice a week but with work being physically demanding by the time I go back to train the pain is exacerbated again because of hard sparring.

    • @JayGaulard
      @JayGaulard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@theFormidable1 I was just watching a few videos about training over 50. The guy was mostly talking about avoiding injury. I've been training for 14 years and am now a black belt instructor and I can tell you that injuries are the last thing I worry about. I need to keep scrambling just to keep up with the younger guys. Blue belts are very good these days and purples are nothing like they used to be (much better now). I still do well, but I'll tell you it's a lot of work. More than it used to be. I think I was actually a lot better when I was a brown belt.

    • @theFormidable1
      @theFormidable1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JayGaulard much respect bro just the rank alone of black belt even purple and I'm humbled around them lol. I know my body has got to get used to the impacts of rolling again thing is i don't remember it being this sore in my 20s, but yeah the more I go I do notice i just tough it out and keep going hard after 2 or 3 days rest and I'm starting to recover quicker than a whole week haha, but same here been watching vids about old man jujitsu and I do think it's good advice to not bite off more than I can chew since I'm no longer a spring chicken if I want to keep training. I have noticed that I have my old injury acting up again since some one did a dick move neck crank on me when I was younger and pinched a disk in my neck that's flaring up, but yeah I love jujitsu even more so now that I have all these youtube vids to help my game more

    • @milproakron
      @milproakron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry for the late reply. I go to 2 or 3 BJJ classes per week with the occasional extra class thrown in. When we roll, most of the time we're sparring hard. At this age, now 54, I'm not sure I know what recovery actually feels like lol.
      Seriously, though, for the first year it was worse. As you get stronger and more used to the type of abuse you take, recovery time has shortened. Currently I'm out and have a surgery in a couple of weeks which is not related to martial arts training at all. I am perhaps lucky. I have a lot of old injuries and thus far I've been able to not Seriously re-injure them.

    I think coaching should be banned in these events. Let the guys roll. It’s meant to be a good spirited competition based on the skills you’ve acquired at training. We don’t need a running commentary. The guys can either execute the skill or they can’t.
