Today, we look at the sister series of Scribblenauts, Drawn to Life, spanning 5 games from 2007 to 2020. Since its unsuccessful revival, it's been entirely missing again- considering this game was prominent in the childhood of so many on their DS- how did we get here?

Drawn to Life is a major reason why I love writing stories in the first place. The series was my first exposure into a kind of story that was genuinely gripping, charming, and surprisingly emotional. I like coming up with characters, their personalities, and their dynamics with each other thanks to the games and I’m so happy people still remember them as fondly as I do.

I was defiantly a car crash kid. I will never forget the impact of that ending. Absolute Gut punch. But it was worth it for the story and them memory.

i beat the second game on the collection when i was younger and even the censored version of the ending still broke me, and was probably the first time i actually felt something tied to a fictional character on that level i cant imagine what it was like for the other people that witnessed the original version in real time

Fun fact about the first game(SPOILERS):
After the cutscene where Wilfre kills The Mayor if you quit the level you can go where he was attacked and he looks like he still breathing but you can't do anything

I remember crying tears of absolute joy when I heard the announcement of a new entry.
The ending of “the next chapter” really got to me as seeing how everyone basically was Thanos Snapped. And I was so excited to see what would happen next.
Now that we got a horrible low effort new entry on switch, the series will have forever ended on a sour note.

The Impact this franchise had on my childhood is undeniable. I remember spending hours grinding for coins and lives in banya fields, memorizing cheat codes, and finding glitches that could get me through levels faster. Every time I played, I learned something new. Like how I fell through a pit right before phase two of Wilfre and soft-locked my game. That was a fun reset.
The Next Chapter is weird for me tho. I just could not stand the ending as a kid. I definitely appreciate it more now. My biggest praise for it has always been the soundtrack. And because of them I got more into story driven franchises.
I’m so glad you covered the franchise. When I saw you were working on this video, I was ecstatic. Can’t wait to see what other games you cover!

The ending of the second one is quite funny looking back, because in the 2000s many urban legends where about shows and videogames with a ending where the protagonist was in a coma all this time. And turns out it does happen in Drawn to Life of all things.

  • @Solesteam

6:37 Basically he's disobeyed you (the creator) and doodled in the book of life thinking he can do better, his creations came out as twisted shadow creatures and then out of spite tore out the pages and scattered them to the wind,
he was promptly exiled. as you would expect.

god, i remember being REALLY excited for two realms when it was initially leaked, as well as sitting in a call in a DtL server upon release. i hate to see one of my favorite series's last entry be... that THING.

  • @Solesteam
    @Solesteam 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

22:00 He probably has an extra page of the book of life hidden away somewhere, which is how all the shadow wasn't completely vanished when you restored the book, he probably finally gotten good at the whole drawing thing and made that monstrosity with the last inch of space on the page...
You know, this explains Wilfre's wasteland in the next game...
Perhaps even Aldark from the final title...

  • @Charziken
    @Charziken ปีที่แล้ว +5

I remember having so much trouble with the final Wilfre fight as a kid, even coming back to the game recently it was still tough. Drawn to Life to me feels like a mixture of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Scribblenauts. You have the platforming and creativity of scribblenauts, and the storytelling and music direction of PMD. The ending lyrics will always get a tear out of me, much like "Don't Ever Forget" does from Explorers. And don't even bet me started on the ending of chapter 2, my brain was not ready for that.

  • @MaxH0ward

This is a great video but 12:58 hurts me inside because that bush there contains ammo if you ground pound it. It took me a few playthroughs to figure that one out, too.
EDIT: 21:24 Oh I know about this!! I've spent an unhealthy amount of time looking into this game's code. There IS a 4-4 in the game's code, but it's almost the same as 4-5, with the exception of the second screen being longer at the start.

Besides Pokemon Diamond, Drawn To Life was the game I wanted really badly once I got a Nintendo DS. It lived up to my hype once I was able to play and beat it, and the story is one of the reasons why I love stories in games and writing stories so much!
Drawn to Life is also the only franchise I have completely collected (unless if some of the games I own are one-offs, lol) but my Next Chapter version has the tree ending instead of the car crash. Sometimes I wish I could time travel and see the look on my face when I realized there was a darker and canon ending...
This is an amazing (and hilarious) retrospective, thank you for taking the time to make it!
Even if we don't get a game after Two Realms, I'm just happy the franchise exists and is still talked about to this day.

Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter was utter peak I forgot how good it was. Played it around 5-7 according to it's release date, I have not felt the vibes of something like what that game emitted I think ever since, whoever did the soundtrack too, man. Yeah I actually think what the DS and so had to offer actually had better experiences then nowadays, not just on nostalgia, I mean there were still B grade studios making unique projects like 5th cell.

As many problems as Two Realms may have (or moreso definitely does), I am happy that they actually went through the effort to continue the story in some regard and actually go off of the original ending while still trying to tie together loose ends, and you typically would not expect a product like the one that was delivered to actually take such things in consideration. It's like, if this is the end of the series, we still have two good games and something akin to a happy ending to the story. And if we do get another game, maybe we could see the series truly evolve instead of devolve (and I do think Two Realms wouldn't be all too bad as a canon mobile spinoff in that regard).

Oh my god this was absolutely fantastic, I had high expectations fot it, but this video blew me away!!! Absolutely worth the wait.
    Random thoughts:
It's amazing that you covered every game so well!!! I was scared of it being centered around The Next Chapter DS ending, but I was happy to be proven wrong.
I was going to share the video in the Drawn to Life Discord to help a bit but I saw that you had already done it.
I didn't found the hidden flower, but I loved the Chandelure at 21:05 and the Tentacool at 51:54.
For The Next Cahpter Wii, I used the premade drawing templates that the game offers. It defeats the purpose, but drawing with the Wiimote sucks anyway and it looks way better than stamps.
Oh, and I also got stuck in the sky level. :-(
The final boss is not a revived Wilfre, it's "Giant Scribble Monster", created by Circi in a failed attempt to bring back Wilfre.
The Scott the Woz therapist cameo was cool since I can see that get some inspiration from him.
Didn't you find it weird that Galileo is missing from The Next Chapter DS? I am Spanish, and on the Spanish version of The Next Chapter, Samuel is named Galileo instead of Samuel.
Yeah, Two Realms is an irredeemable piece of garbage.
The touch controls were added through a later update, they didn't work when I played it. Maybe that's why they failed you at first. Not that there is any point in drawing in this game anyway.
The speed boost melons in the overworld are bonkers, and I DID think the core gameplay was horrible.
Wilfre IS in Two Realms. He is the hooded Raposa from 1:22:58, and a cliffhanger to a sequel that won't ever exist.
Oh, and quick heads up, you misspelled Two Realms as Twin Realms in the video chapters.
THAK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!

Wow, I wasn't expecting to be as engaged in this video as I was. I was more a Scribblenauts person, but I have previously played DTL The Next Chapter (DS), and I really liked it. I ought to play through the first game sometime, but I'm not really sure I'd go beyond that. I hope that someday, DTL can come back as good as it once was, although I'm not hopeful, considering 5th Cell is gone. Good video though; thanks for reminding me of this game!
Also, yeah, TNC's ending hit hard. I don't think I really got to understand it when I first played considering I was young and also hadn't played the first game, but I'm sure if I had played DTL1 and were a bit older when I played TNC, it would have hit harder.

8:35 That might also be another limitation thing, I'm not certain so don't quote me on this and I'm no DS or any hardware technician, but I think the DS has a colour limit, a very high one, but a limit nonetheless, and they give you a LOT of colours.

I was a tree ending household, because I got the collections game for the DS, and it honestly was more confusing than it was tragic. The lessened impact made it so far lessened that I had an entirely different takeaway to the ending. I ended up thinking that the drawn to life world was just an imaginary world Mike and his sister made up and just, abandoned because they were growing up and out of the imaginative phase of childhood. Granted that interpretation was horrendously incorrect, it still gave me an emotional gut punch.

Oh man this series. I remember getting the first game for my birthday the year it released, and I had absolutely no clue what to expect. I quickly became attached to the villagers and their story, and I found myself getting emotional from a game for the first time with that ending song montage with Mari and Jowee. It easily had become my favorite game at that time, even if technically it wasn't the most innovative I had played up to that point. I remember deeply hoping for a sequel, though I figured an obscure little title like this would never get one.
When the sequel did finally get announced and I played through it, I did indeed get emotional, but not in the way that the game expected me to be. The grand plot twist of the events of the two games being a coma dream of what was previously a joke character infuriated me, it felt like everything I had done and the care I invested into the various villagers was for nothing. It felt like a betrayal, and it actually caused me to quit videogames altogether for a while. At that point I was afraid to get invested into anything new out of the fear that it would end in the same sort of twist.
I know a lot of people have a good deal of love for how emotional the ending of the Next Chapter is, but for me it only caused me to develop an eternal distaste for the "it was all a dream" trope in stories.
All that said, great video! Glad to see creators on TH-cam talk about underrated titles like this.

Drawn to life needs more attention towarfs their ds entries tbh. As you say they aren't masterpieces but deserve the respect for their ambitions.
Also shoutout to the time i talked about the plot of DTL the next chapter in my english oral exam without name dropping it and getting an 8 lol.

59:58 Baki Baaah as in a sheep sound and kai, like that bug god guy from Dragonball. Baki.
Also that's the name of the species, not the captain himself, I honestly have no idea how he's a ghostly pirate captain whos such a giant threat when prior they were just typical pest creatures, not sapient beings capable of conscious thought and planning.

1:12:40 My guess is he's the REAL drawn to life version of the devil, Wilfree is merely Mike's interpretation, with the Raposa being how he views the angels, Wilfre being one that rebeled and paid the ultimate price, now this is the real battle...
and of course because the franchise was dieing anyway, it's way more washed up than Mike's imaginary hypothesizing of how this showdown would go.
Edit: I say showdown forgetting the lack there of.

Ah, my favourite corporate combination "Here is an IP that we own. Audience is kind of niche. Let's make a rushed game and get rid of the defining features. Nobody wanted to buy it, guess the playerbase moved on."
My lecturer actually explained this to me with a friend of his who got EA'd (by EA) A lot of game publishers are geared in ways that only let them see payouts over a certain size. Niche games that make a small, stable profit are generally treated as a waste of resources. Through the eyes of the bean counters, game studios working on niche games is manpower that isn't being dedicated to the biggest games, where the same amount of labour can create exponentially more revenue.

I still stand that my favourite game is Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter. The story hit me somewhere that I think no other game will ever hit me. Some games came close like Omori. But that ending and everything surrounding it. Maybe because of nostalgia aswell I still really like the gameplay, but still I love what was said about the game. Amazing content.
