Am I the only one who thinks "Pac-man World 2" is just a simply *_Fantastic_* Videogame?! And I say this as a Person who has played with It and also plays with It as an adult 😅🤷🏻‍♀️ I *_Really_* Love the Soundtrack, the Exploration factor, the "Simple but not too much" factor, the Colors, the Settings, the fact that Pac-man can do several things besides walking/running (Swimming, Ice Skating, Roller Skating), Etc Etc... It really is One of My All Time Favourite Videogames *_EVER_* (without exaggerations)!!! 🙈🤩🥺💯🫂🔝❤💙💜

Dude, I have an ENTIRE level idea of an underwater base to replace Shark Attack that’s where the ghosts build the mega whale and it plays more like a secret infiltration of enemy territory with the professor guiding us through, I would LOVE to share this idea further because I genuinely see the potential to incorporate it.
Also today’s Clyde day because I said so.

Pac-Man World 2 is flawed but I think it's the definite best one in the series. Each level feels pretty fresh and while there are some weaker moments in the game I enjoyed most levels. The only one I think sucked was the Clyde boss, mostly for the reasons you described. I always was pretty neutral to the water levels, and thought the 7 minute shooter one was at least a little cool because its randomly generated each time.
The collectable system is super terrible, no question. I was crazy enough to 100% the game and I found it to be tedious and unfair. Having to collect everything again if I cleared the level missing a single pac dot or fruit was not very fun. 100%ing blade mountain took years off my life. Completing the challenge was very satisfying but the process was so unfun and I will probably never do it again.
However, I think collecting everything in PW2 is still more intuitive than in PW1. In PW1 you can only see your completion percentage upon beating the final boss with no indication of which levels you didn't 100%, which makes you have to rely on trial and error. The act of getting everything in each level is equally tedious as PW2, except in a different way. PW1 levels all follow the same formula; progress in the level, get the fruit you need to open a door, backtrack to said door, and then clear the same obstacle you went by a moment ago. It quickly got boring, and even though each world looked unique and vibrant, they all felt the same for that reason. PW1 has a huge edge in the bosses though, all of them (except the stupid robot guy) were really fun, even if the world 2 boss was kinda BS.

It’s fun, yes, but not perfect. I grew up playing it and I still remember it’s frustrating bits. Nostalgia is often a bait and switch to keep us from seeing the bad side of things, so we shouldn’t let it cloud our judgement.
Also, I recently played it again and was able to get 189 tokens for the first time. The time trials will be the bane of my existence, especially avalanche alley and that one volcanic panic speedrun skip I finally got to do.

    • @kieranstark7213
      @kieranstark7213 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So what are the many (or moderate amount of) things you love about Pac-Man World 2 that makes you like it in spite of its mentioned flaws?

    • @jamesonshekmeister
      @jamesonshekmeister ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@kieranstark7213 Well, I enjoy the music for one thing. It's a bit repetitive, but still catchy since it uses a leitmotif in expressing itself. The visuals and environment is basic but beautiful even in today's standards. It's aged well on that matter. While it lacks in specific world environments like the first one, it makes up for stunning scenery and a more simple approach on Pac-Man. The controls are way more responsive than the first, even if they still have their own flaws like the pillars putting you in a death loop animation when you latch onto them from behind, but I'm willing to look past that. And the collectibles, while being a pain to collect in later levels, look and feel great to collect. The fruit look so tasty that I want to eat 'em myself, even if their just 2D images. Also, the message that pops up when you collect all of one collectable, like an apple or some pac dots, is so satisfying to see when all the number of each one from a level start spinning. I get a good dopamine kick from that. The bosses are nothing special to write home about, but are much more doable and don't overstay their welcome much. Although Clyde makes an exception to that rule as he can be a bastard to deal with it on a first playthrough. The games you unlock at the arcade make a great incentive on collecting tokens and museum is an interesting thing to see. Unlocking Mrs. Pac-Man is a bit much though. I think that's all I have to share on my opinion on the game. It's not perfect and it has a lot of moments that made me want to rip my hair out, but it's an overall fun and enjoyable experience and it's definitely one of the best of the trilogy to play for control and visuals alike. Plus, if you're not a completionist, this one's up your alley because collectibles are optional. But I do recommend at least trying to unlock some of the games in the arcade. Pac-Attack and Pac-Mania are fun to play.
Phew, my fingers and brain are tired after writing a short review summary of this whole game.

There is a button you can use in mazes to zoom the camera out and view the whole maze at once. World 1 does it too and for some reason the Re-Pac doesn’t let you do it before the music stops and the gameplay starts.
I enjoyed this video. I personally appreciate how hectic the ocean levels get but can agree they really stray from the typical gameplay. It’s a shame they couldn’t make one more 3D swimming stage but with the under-water rev-roll replacement to allow for leaping out of water, getting around faster, and so on.

This game was my childhood! Even though it is not perfect it's still one of my favorite games. The ps2 version is harder because the ghost kill you in one hit on version 1.0. There was a ps2 revision made that made some of the levels easier which the Gamecube and Xbox are based off of. Also you can zoom out from any of the mazes by hitting the L or R buttons on all the versions. There is also an extra life trick in Butane pain where you jump down a center hole (which has a saw going around it) which takes you to bouncy pads where you get a token and a whole bunch of extra lives. You can easily get over a 100 lives before the ice levels.

I played some of this game recently and antiquated is a good word for it, the camera being constantly locked and stuck, the checkpoint system resetting progress when you die and some of the level design with the precise rev rolling in the lava levels definitely annoyed me a ton and made me wish a Re-pac version would exist for this game, I can see a great game hidden behind those issues. They did a pretty good job at making World 1 feel pretty modern with the Re-pac so the same for this game would help it so much.

The Clyde fight has always been pretty infamous in this game, although I'm not familiar with the hitbox issues you had at the end of the fight (it may be an issue with the GameCube version since I primarily played this one on PS2). In general, though, I think this and KingK's video really showcase how busted the core collectathon element of this game is and how that hurts so much of what would otherwise be pretty great game design.

As a kid, I loved this game. As an adult, I still love this game...but there is no denying that World 2 may have suffered from the same weird development cycle as the other games in this trilogy. The difficulty curve is wildly inconsistent, the underwater levels felt like padding (even back then) and overall it just feels sort of...unfinished? I still pull this one out and beat it every year and always come out with a net positive experience...but it's no masterpiece. Hopefully it too will get remade as well- I always felt like this trilogy could greatly benefit from it.

There is some fall damage in this game, like jumping from the high trees in B-Doing Woods tbf. With Magma Opus, you can skip slides so long as you touch them at least once near the end.
I'll admit, though: That wall in Night Crawling stopped 7 year old me from beating the game. I had to wait ANOTHER 7 years just to be able to clear that mess.
There is definitely a better life grinding spot: Butane Pain has a secret area with 7 extra lives on a single stump. When you're about to roll down the net, look for a B-Doing in the bottom right corner. That'll guide you to it, so you can just collect those and keep dying to reset them.
I do find the Ocean world to be a unique, chill break from the hectic lava area...At least until Yellow Pac-Marine (the boss is fine imo.)

Decided to come back again to say one last piece, despite this being one of my favorite games of all time, and I will defend it to the grave, this video doesn’t piss me off or upset because it’s true, we’re all living things and everything has it’s flaws no matter how quality is, and I’ve accepted that, plus I mostly agree with the flaws, and I only call them out because I care, and would LOVE to give this game the better development and chance it needed, plus Mario and Sonic arguably had technically worse games with major hatred behind certain aspects like jank and frustration (especially on Sunshine’s end) that we wouldn’t expect from in house games, yet we still love them despite their flaws because they really showed how much ambition and progress 3D was doing and that things were only going to get better (despite the former being the only one to actually succeed), and also modern games now that pander to nostalgia instead of taking risks have made us appreciate these games despite their missteps, but that’s a topic for another day.....

Well I finally got around to watching this video and it's not as bad as I was expecting. You make a few good points, the Magma Opus slide has wonky physics, Blinky/Clyde/Akabei is a difficulty spike (though I think it's more fair than you give it credit for), Yellow Pac-Marine sucks, and that one section in Night Crawling is a bit cryptic, they probably should've put a ramp there to better indicate what to do.
But... that's all I can agree with you on. First off, the collection/100% system is one I think is really overblown and misunderstood. This isn't an open sandbox 3D platformer like Spyro or Banjo-Kazooie. This is a linear get-to-the-end 3D platformer like Crash Bandicoot or Mario 3D World. The challenge in completion in Pac-Man World 2 isn't just to get everything; it's to get everything in one clean run. It's much like the box challenges in Crash. That's a lot of the replay value. Getting a better feel for the levels, improving your skills, until you can eventually achieve the perfect run. It's a lot like playing an arcade game over and over to get a high score, which is very fitting for a series that has its roots in the arcades, and the aspect of collecting everything also harkens back to the gameplay loop of the classic Pac-Man maze games. 100% in Pac-Man World 2 definitely *looks* daunting on the outside, but once you actually do it, it's really not that difficult and make the game more enjoyable for the most part. Some levels don't handle 100% well like Blade Mountain or the water levels, but for the most part I think 100% makes the game a lot of fun, and you don't even have to do those levels' 100% if you just want to unlock everything, as the game lets you skip out on 9 tokens.
Something I notice in your footage is that you frequently cancel out of the rev-roll while above a pit. I just keep thinking to myself, "if you want to make the gap, don't cancel out of the rev-roll." It honestly reminded me of IGN's infamous Sonic Unleashed review.
While I agree that the slide in Magma Opus sucks, that other section you had trouble with was no problem for me. I thought what you had to do was pretty clear so... skill issue I guess.
The 4th boss is a difficulty spike and that last hit is bullshit, but I think this boss is still a fair challenge. The projectiles are pretty easy to predict, they just come out fast, and the fire spawns where the projectiles hit the ground, and sense the boss aims for you, you have a bit of control over where the fire goes. I DO know that the GameCube version has the fire more transparent then in the other versions, but even then I don't think it's too unnoticeable in the GameCube version
I also thought most of the underwater levels were a nice little change of pace, with the only one I disliked being Yellow Pac-Marine, which is also the ONLY level in the game I don't like. The volcano levels upped the challenge but were also still fun. I also wouldn't consider 4 levels a "big part of the game." That's 4 out of 24, 16.67%. Maybe I'm just dumb at math but the percentage doesn't seem very high to me. I get that your mileage may vary if you don't like the volcano levels for example, but for me, the bad level percentage is 4.17% considering I only dislike a single level. And while we're talking about percentages and that comment at 28:05, I'd like to say that the good-to-bad ratio in Pac-Man World 2 is much better than Super Mario 64. Has a better camera too.
Oh yeah that's another thing, you didn't talk about it much, but I feel the camera is another thing about this game that gets really overblown. Like, it's not perfect, sometimes it gets stuck on something and you have to... adjust it to get it unstuck, which is really just a minor annoyance but so many people treat it like it makes the game unplayable. Honestly, this game has one of the better cameras of the era, and certainly a better camera than most 5th gen games.
So, some stuff I agree with, some stuff that was just you missing the point, some stuff that seemed more like you being bad at the game rather than a problem with the game, and one annoyingly clickbaity and condescending title.

The volcano levels are my favorite and my argument for the level you got confused on- my 8 year old self figured it out first try so I can't say I exactly sympathize or agree- although the magnum opus slide IS junk, there are actually TWO skips that let you ignore it entire- reminiscent to the mario 64 slide skip-- but even wilder imo.
The blinky boss fight (Clyde caldera) is a great boss fight imo because it combines interesting platform enclosure mechanics (sizzling ground) with merciless death defying vaults over large gaps to get to the boss (although technically you could jump onto the boss head early for most of it). As for the janky final hits, I hope a remaster captures that feeling in a different way-- like imagine you have to quickly butt bounce 5 times to break a protective barrier and reach the hp bar but go too slow and you'll dive into the lava going for the 5th- obviously with visual indicators.
My only gripes with the game is the underwater whale boss itself (water levels were okay and a nice breather after hard platforming but could've used in-between segments like entering an underwater cave segment or in a ship underwater as opposed to full on water levels). And for collection completionist sake, skate levels.

Will watch/listen through this video as I play Pacman 256
I replayed/beat the game for the first time about a year ago. I think my biggest impression is that it was cute and fun and delightful until Clyde in the Caldera, which was just far too buggy to make it a fair fight. After that, the game really takes a nosedive with its water levels. They're difficult, annoying to play, a bit broken, and are set up in such a bizarre way that getting all the fruit for full completion isn't even close to being feasible for an average player, let alone the children this game was targeted towards. Also the framing of it all makes no sense. This evil villain guy who was sealed in a tree for like a thousand years by a knight man happens to possess an entire underwater military fleet with full working technology? Felt they ran out of ideas, though thankfully the last few levels after that were pretty decent.
Glad I was finally able to beat the game though, I feel like I avenged my childhood self who never was able to get past Clyde and eventually decided to give up. This one is for you, little me.

I find it funny you showed a clip of the Finding Nemo game, as Pac-Man World 2 and Finding Nemo are the two games I got with my Nintendo GameCube when it was given to me as a birthday gift... of course, I played them a lot less after I discovered that the game actually packaged with the console was Metroid Prime and my grandparents hid it because of the T rating. When I found it hidden somewhere, it became my favorite games and is still in my top 5.
I still hold a spot in my heart for Pac-Man World 2. Sorry Finding Nemo, you don't even break top 5 liscensed games for the GameCube.

Thank you so much for this. The first Pac-Man World is one of the games of my childhood, so I might be biased, but I've played it again and I honestly think it's a good game (I mean it's getting remastered isn't it). I had never played Pac-Man World 2 until recently. Everyone around me seems to love it, but... I don't see that. In fact, I mostly find it frustrating, for the reasons you said yourself. The platforming can be hit and miss - getting all fruits in the FIRST FREAKING LEVEL just freaking SUCKS, I hated bouncing on those roofs with a PASSION. Some levels just feel a bit dull in term of design, and mind you, I haven't even gotten yet to the volcano levels, but at this point I'm not even sure I'll finish the game. I feel I'm not enjoying it. Whatever.
I enjoyed your review though! Liked and subscribed :)

Another review said the main reason the fruits in Pac-Village are so hard to get is because it's the hub world. You're supposed to come back with newfound knowledge or something, and the same goes for this game in general. Much like an arcade game, you keep attempting each level to see if you can get a better score.
That said, I don't mind them expanding on lore or whatever they tried to do in this game's sequel. Just pause your game towards the end of Kirby to see how much they can fit in, despite the simplicity of the main character.

*On the topic of 2002 3D platformers, this is why Pac-Man World 2 is better than Super Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure 2 (mainly the seventh-gen ports because the Dreamcast version is great)*
    • Instead of romanticizing negative stereotypes like the damsel in distress (Princess Peach) and/or the yandere (Pinky), it antagonizes it.
    • If you think Mario is a good franchise partly because of its character designs of Bowser, his minions, Yoshis and even the humans (re: Mario Bros.), then wait until you see what PMW2 has in store (re: Chomp-Chomp has dog ears but looks like Pac-Man himself on a four-legged body)
    • The graphics are super stylistic and very atmospheric (as for Sonic Adventure 2 (mainly the 2012 version), on the other hand… m.th-cam.com/video/GxCcHOvSVJQ/w-d-xo.html)!
    • The GBA version of PMW2, while the weakest way to play the game, is nowhere near as much of a downgrade as SMS for the Switch.
    • Did you think the music was strong (especially The Legendary Sand Bird) in SMS? Wait until you see what PMW2 has in store!
    • If you thought Bowser was a strong villain, wait until you see Spooky!
    • While both have their fun and frustrating segments, World 2 has more of the former and Sunshine has the latter.
    • It has a tamer fandom that can respect/acknowledge opinions.
    • Platformers are less of a norm in the Pac-Man franchise than in the Mario franchise so we need more platformers in the Pac-Man franchise! m.th-cam.com/video/s7o4_QoJisk/w-d-xo.html
    • More atmospheric variety (Super Mario Sunshine can overdose a bit on sunniness even for what it’s supposed to be, but World 2 really does feel like it has a more various uses of their own elements for each world)
    • It’s a video game with no bad acting whatsoever, which is saying a lot for a game that was made two decades ago.
    • A controllable camera in most of not all places (didn’t see that coming, huh!).
    • It inspires me to make a movie with that game’s visual style (Pac-Man and the University of Pac-Land)
    • Unlike Super Mario Sunshine and like Sonic Adventure 2, it comes up with a more cleverly complex ending than just “Have a relaxing vacation!” (granted, both Bowser Jr. & Sr. have a very believable father-son dynamic, and the end of SMS is where it all started)

  • @luxerhusku2609
    @luxerhusku2609 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Even as a kid, I had issues with the second half of this game. Volcano, Water, and Haunted themed all felt like a slog to play and it was around that time where I really wish they would have stopped after Clyde and go straight to Spooky.
They all had very subpar level design that really makes me think the developers must have run out of ideas and tried their best to make the levels more puzzle based than simple platforming. They went back to just simple platforming with the Haunted levels, but they felt pretty disappointing imo.
Collecting all of the Fruits, Pac Dots, and Tokens in this game is pure Hell! I really had suffered so much, trying to unlock Ms. Pac-Man and let me tell you: it's a fucking chore to do and I hate it. This is one of the reasons why I don't like Collect-a-thon games as they feel more and more like padding, even if the reward is good. I just wanted it to be over. That's why I have decided to not complete games anymore and just finish the story and be done with it.
But the first half of the game was very fun and the soundtrack as a whole is totally Godlike for a Pac-Man game. It was my very first Pac-Man game after playing the arcade Pac-Man and I liked it, but didn't love it, because around that time, I had played better platformers.
If I have to rate the game now, it would be a 6. It's a fun game, but the more you play through it after Pinky, the more it feels like you're on molasses with the pace of the game, as well as the very mediocre level design of the later levels. It's a shame too, because yeah, this game could have been amazing. It's just an alright game.
