Thanks for all the videos Huddison. At 4:00 you mention that after takeoff if you engage the AuoPilot it will climb at a "default" rate of climb. Actually, at least in real life, when the AutoPilot is first engaged - and no other lateral or vertical modes have been selected prior - the Autopilot will enter into a ROLL mode for lateral control, and a PIT mode for vertical (these are the two most basic lateral and vertical AP modes). In other words, it will roll wings level and lock onto whatever pitch you are currently flying at. If you do nothing else it will climb to your selected altitude at that pitch setting (which can be adjusted using the Nose Up and Nose Down buttons just like with VS). I often times only use FLC or PIT mode when flying in real life (as you mentioned in your video:). I use VS when descending...but that it just my preference. As a follow up to that, if you are climbing/descending in VS mode and then deselect that by pressing the VS button, the autopilot will then revert back to PIT mode by locking onto whatever the current aircraft pitch is.
The reason some pilots use PIT and FLC modes - instead of VS - is that VS generally offers NO low airspeed protection. In other words, the pilot may set a VS that is too high for the aircraft to maintain but the autopilot does not care, it will keep trying to maintain that VS regardless of the airspeed and this could (and has in real life) lead to a stall situation. Or the VS may be ok at lower altitudes, but once higher, less dense altitudes are reached the VS will be too high. Whereas FLC and PIT will not allow the aircraft to stall. More specifically, FLC as you have shown controls the aircraft's speed in the climb by automatically controlling pitch so there is no worry of getting too slow and stalling. Likewise, PIT mode kinda does the same. If we remember the phrase "Pitch + Power = Performance" then we can see how PIT mode will keep us from accidentally stalling while in the climb. E.g. at full climb power and at a given PIT setting you will climb at a certain airspeed. As you get higher and higher and the altitude begins to take a toll on climb rate the PIT and Airspeed will remain the same at that power setting; however the aircraft will simply stop climbing at some point (again, unlike the VS mode which will gradually keep raising the nose to to try and maintain the selected VS, meanwhile the airspeed will keep slowing down until a stall condition is reached). I hope that wasn't too much info and I hope that might help some people:) Cheers!

Ahh, so now I don’t have the “trial and error” method (keeping the rate of climb I guessed keeping the speed increase a steady setting) I can make the bird maintain the safe speed to keep her in the air. A nice tip added to my learning “check list”. It was explained very well! ✈️✅

I’ve been using VS to change altitude for a while now using the Huddison mappings on the Xbox controller and HOTAS One. I modded it a bit to now use FL Change mode. The ‘A’ button on the throttle handle now turns on FL Change mode, and the Left-Bumper + B increases desired reference airspeed. Left-Bumper + A decreases reference airspeed.

Another great video Huddy. I learned from @KipontheGround that FLC is particularly helpful when at higher altitudes where the aircraft may struggle to keep a constant rate due to the pressure. Also useful because every aircraft has a “best performance” airspeed when climbing and this dials it in like a glove.

Have a XBOX X and having bought a Thrustmaster Hotas One have parked it until there's a complete update as it's frustrating and unworkable at present. Would you have any pdf you can post regarding keypad settings you use on the XBox keypad if possible.

Hi Huddison another great video, quick question regarding the inner and outer knobs you call the bigger knob of the two inner and the smaller one outer I think the big one is called the outer knob and the small one is the inner knob.

    • @Huddison

In my experience, using live weather, they consistently assign you a runway with a tail wind. Although the please expidite your climb is supposed to have been fixed, ATC will assign you a different and unreasonable altitude other than your filed cruise, leading them to ask Cessna 172's to climb to FL160 and such.
