    Good job describing the bike. I bought one a couple months ago and it blows me away every time I ride. It’s way more fun, comfortable and nimble than I thought it would be. Plenty of power. Off road it’s a dream. The suspension is soooooo good. If you’re thinking of buying it. Do it. She’s an absolute beast. No regrets

      hi handsome. I like your choice of vocabulary " she's a beast" lol. would you consider it to a first timer whod 5'7'' 140lbs?

      @@go5582 sorry for the delayed response. I’m 6’ and I’m on my tippy toes on flat ground. Very tall bike. If your fine with one foot in the ground at traffic lights I’d go for it. I wouldn’t feel right turning anyone away from this bike. By far my best purchase!!!!!

    Congrats on the purchase! That was a very articulate and well thought out presentation on why you went the way you did--as you and many others have often said, get the bike that will be best suited for the type of riding you want to do and has the features you want it to have. It certainly sounds like the 790 will be that just right fit for you, but of course it is early days yet, so it will be interesting to see how you feel about it as the months roll on. As good as many of these middleweight bikes are now, I imagine the big Adventure bike sales are going to go down while this segment, which as you said really hits the sweet spot for so many, will grow. Have fun, ride safe and I look forward to future videos on your experience with the KTM!

      Alot of us have been waiting for really off road, long distance adventure bike. Big touring bikes are good for that but they are not adventure bikes in my books. thank you ktm and yamaha for delivering, cheers.

  • @drrider1658
    @drrider1658 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Good honest reasons. You did not came across as a KTM fan boy. I also appreciated that you had a whole bunch of other nice ADV bikes as a reference point. My other choice was the T7 but it's delay to the USA cost them a sale, not that Yamaha cares as I'm sure they'll sell out for a couple or three years to start. Turns out that was a good thing for me because KTM came out with this thing. At first being a KTM (reliability 'horror' stories) and the funky gas tank design caused me concern but as the ride reports and tests came piling in I was sold. The final 'straw' to get me to order one a year ago was that Chris Birch finished 4th in the Hellas Rally against a whole field of enduro bikes that were made for that stuff! I'm no CB but at least I knew the bike was way more capable on the trail than I was! I have a well modded DR650 and feel that T7 is too close in performance to my DR, but the KTM is WAY more; the suspension is fantastic (the fork is SO awesome), the electronics (I also have the cool QS and CC) and that strong engine. For a 790 twin it flat out flies when ridden in anger. It is an ADV sport bike on the street and super capable off road. It also gets over 50 mpg! As you said; a Goldilocks or Unicorn bike for many. I see the new 2020 Triumph 900 Rally and Rally pro as the closest to the KTM 790 S and R rather than the T7.

    I've had mine nearly a year now and covered 6500 miles on it. That includes a lot of dual carriageways/motorways commuting to work at high speed. There's also a lot of town work, twisty 'B' roads and a bit of off road/green lanes. It does real world 55-60 mpg, tours well, goes banzai on twisty's (to the point I can loose sport bikes) and can leap off-road whenever the opportunity presents itself. Are there better bikes for each of those disciplines?...yep. But are there bikes that can do it all convincingly?..only the 790R. And for those who think you don't need the electronics package on the 790- you will when it saves your arse as it has mine!
    Reliability wise I've had problems with the battery failing, leaking hoses and the fogging screen. It hasn't ruined the ownership experience for me.
    One last thing is the looks. They are subjective, but all I've ever had is people saying positive things about it, including non bikers. :-)

    Congrats on your new bike! Seems like one of the best out there! Sometimes I feel like I'm all set with my R1200GSW and DR650. But the DR650 leaves a lot of room for improvement on the highway, even with engine mods, Corbin seat and decent windshield. So that 790 adventure R and Tenere 700 are starting to look really good,...

    I just ordered one (will arrive this October) to replace my previous main touring weapon, a 2016 1290 Super Adventure, which I crashed last November. The crashed bike was almost beyond repairable. It is actually repairable, but the cost is unbelievable. So I guess I’d better get a new one. And by the price and the size, this 790 Adventure R makes more sense to my need (I am 5’6”).

    No personal experience myself, after watching heaps of vids, the 790 is arguably the best bike in it's class at present and it'll be a great bike for most if you've got the $$$. The T7, well "RidingWithTom" sums it up after getting off his 790R to test ride one, he' still got his 790. I don't need the power and weight, something lighter with good service intervals would be nice.

  • @keyboarddancers7751
    @keyboarddancers7751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The T7 is by far the ideal low tech round-the-world/intercontinental machine. The 790's the equivalent of a whole set of exquisite chef's knives.

    Good video as usual mate. I test rode both and bought the F850GS. Wasn’t a big fan of the KTM. No one thing ‘wrong’ as such, just didn’t gel with it. Love the BMW. Here in the U.K. there’s not much in it price-wise, and so far, the BMW has been brilliant. One caveat is that I’m purely a road rider, so can’t comment on how either are off-road. Looked at the Tenere 700 too, but high prices, and I wanted the cornering ABS and Traction, the quickshifter and more powerful engine.

    Hi Ian. Great Video. I was leaning on getting a Norden 900 as my next Bike, but after watching this Video. I’m actually liking this KTM better. Mainly because of the Suspension. I have watched a lot of Videos talking about the Rear Suspension being not so great on the Norden. This KTM just seems to check more Boxes for me. I would have to look first at the Aftermarket Windshields that are available. I don’t know, now Days with everyone upping their Game on Adventure Bikes, it’s getting harder to make a decision. I still worry about Maintenance and Reliability on the KTM. That is really my biggest worry. Thanks for all your Hard Work you put into these Videos Ian. I hope the Family is doing Great as well.👍❤️

    Hmm. I live inSOCAL. Bought a dealer special 790r. Buddy bought t700. Intent was to buy two t700's. Only 1 was found a week or two ago at a price we could stomach. He got it. I test rode a 790s out of desire for due diligence. I liked it. A ride buddy has a 790r I rode. I'm a short legged guy, 5'10" but 30" inseam. Felt fine. Bought 790r. Had a 950 back in the day and loved it. 790r is that and better. We just returned from 1000 mile ride trip in North Cal. His t700 is a nice bike. Very nice. Suspension needs help, probably a grand to fix..bringing the price difference to about 1500. Seat on the 790r better for longer street rides. That extra 23 hp of the KTM was noticed in the higher elevation mountains. Both did decent in the easy dirt, rock we found. Looking forward to learning, doing more with this 790r. Hoping the t700 comes along for the fun.

    I recently sold my 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT. I want either a T7 or KTM 790 ADV. Here in western Canada there is a smaller price difference between the KTM and the Tenere. The T7 is $12,399 CDN, while the KTM 790 ADV R is $14,699 CDN (not including freight, PDI and taxes on either bike). So, a $2,300 CDN difference. I really like the Tenere, but for the extra money, you get another 25 HP, rider modes, way better suspension, 4 liter (1 gallon) bigger tank, TC, available cruise control. Hmm..

    Around the block on a 790 and it was fun and small feeling not what I wanted for occasional 2 up, I liked the Tracer 900 better. I ride 90% on road. Also after taking the Tiger 900 on a descent run I felt very comfortable and under whelmed. Then I found a a used KTM 1290 S thought id give it a try and that's the end of the story, Super adventure 1290 cant be beat for me and if I need to I can set it up for a more off road trip with little work. 524# wet 110tq 160 HP mmmhmmm no more games.

      I get people have only so much money. for a mandatory 2nd bike. If you ride on occasion 1 bike is enough. But if you are sick about bikes, ride often a 2nd bike even if very used is the goal. Steal, , beg, borrow trade to get your 2nd bike. Park in living room if you live in a high theft area or rainy area. BIG ROCK MEDIA caters his video to all bikers but entertains the dreamer and sick biker. Sick for more bikes and adventures.

    Siiiick review, very well presented and detailed too. I initially thought the seat would be too high for me (I'm 5' 8") but I sat on one at the dealership and since the center of gravity was so low it was pretty easy to tripod and I can actually get both sets of toes down. The Hypermotard (similar seat height) felt sketchy to sit on. I'm hoping to get a 790R / 890R when I find the right bike.

    I have been riding mine for 12 months now and I have to thumb up your video, sir. The only thing I still haven't figured out are the 9 settings for Traction Control in Rally Mode. On 9 there is no throttle at the slightest lean angle, a great rain/mud setup. But all other settings to me seem to make no big difference, lot's of wheel spin, I had a slight little highside on gravel with TC on 8 (yes, I was provoking it to try it out). I am an old guy coming from the old times and so I usually have it dialed down all the way to 1. Come on, this is 95hp, who needs traction control with that power?

    The only logical choice a serious dirt rider can make if you want this class of bike. Honda too fat, Tenere too basic (but will sell well regardless despite poor suspension), 850GS a road bike, Triumph too bulky. 790 has Superb electronics and suspension, good fuel range, class leading power and looks like a dirt bike. For me, after owing an ‘18 EXC500 with traction control, modern electronics are essential.

    • @0xsergy
      @0xsergy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      850gs i would probably lump in with the tenere. they have similar ground clearances and it has the same suspension travel as the 790 R(more than the Tenere).

    Try changing oil in that bike yourself. You will find it so annoying as you will remove the skid plate and fuel covers that don't line up easily when you put it back. I liked your straight forward commenting. I'm getting older and last year I bought a big GSA. There's nothing wrong with that bike but I'm a Ducati rider and the GSA lacked snap, crackle & pop. Sold the bike and bought the Ducati 1260 Enduro to ride up to Labrador City (very difficult in the rain) - The Enduro is massive (but very fast and powerful); also very tall. Cannot put my feet flat on the ground (which is becoming more and more important to me as I get older). I'm 5'9" - how is the seating on this 790R? Can your feet land flat and firmly on the ground? Will the engine be just as satisfying as the Ducati 950 (still quite tall)?

    I have the 2019 with 10,000 miles on it and it has been an excellent bike! I think your review was quite accurate. This bike is a game changer/Unicorn! I can’t imagine any other bike but it doesn’t come without any skeletons. Just blew a seal on rear shock due to heat I think so I ordered the heat shield from Camel. Really other than that it’s been awesome with the upgrades I’ve done.

With that being said I’m all for the growing mid weight segment. Let KTM and Yamaha refine both of these bikes and I may add one to the garage. Yes! What was Bmw thinking?! • @BigRockMoto
      @BigRockMoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      All dealers for any brand try to charge the setup fee. Freight, yeah, that is typical on cars and getting more usual for bikes. Just negotiate a better deal. Have them take the fees off, or reduce price until you feel good about it. If they won't budge, try another dealer. A good deal is peace of mind on both sides.

    I have a chance to buy a 790 R what are some of the biggest pitfalls of the 790 R ?

  • @jvlivtriple
    @jvlivtriple 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just picked up one of these yesterday. Initial impressions after 100 miles. The seat is a plank, however I will wait to replace it until it has had a chance to break in or my butt has adapted. Suspension is stiffer than I expected. The mechanic at the motorcycle shop advised that I wait about 1000 miles before playing with the suspension adjustments to give it a chance to break in. The text on the "combination instrument" is too small for my old eyes to read. I don't see wearing reading glasses as an option while riding. The "miles remaining" for fuel usage seems to be useless. It doesn't come with an owners manual. I feel that is unforgivable for a $15,000 motorcycle. That is on top of paying extra to enable functions already built into the bike. I would really like a printed copy that I can take out to the garage while I figure out the combination instrument. I did print the available PDF file for that chapter, 77 pages. KTM no longer gives you a bottle opener in the tool kit? Waaa..
    Now for the good observations. For the first few miles I was tiptoeing around corners because I haven't ridden on the road with knobbyish tires in years. As I gained confidence I found the tires are a non-issue. It handles very well for anything I would do on the street. I didn't get this bike for track days. This bike has the best throttle response of any fuel injected motorcycle I have ridden. None of abruptness associated with fuel injected bikes. Back to handling, on the road I find it handles very nicely. Later today, weather permitting, I will head out into the woods and try a few fire roads. Cruise control was kind of creepy at first but after a few miles I got used to it. It worked well. I like the brakes on the road, we will see how they do in the dirt. I have never owned a bike with a fairing before. I was a bit nervous about that because some people have experienced buffeting. I didn't find that to be an issue but I only spent about 15 miles on the highway. Maybe my height or the helmet I was wearing play into that.

    They are great bikes... but too heavy for any real offroad trails. My next bike is a 690 Enduro R that I am going to mod into the ultimate light weight ADV/go anywhere bike. The 690 is 150 pounds lighter than the 790.... One hundred and fifty pounds!!!

    • @BigRockMoto
      @BigRockMoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point 150lbs is a huge amount. You will add some weight setting up the 690 but it will still be a ton less. It won't be as good a road bike as the 790 but you will enjoy it more offroad.

    • @richymoto
      @richymoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure if you have got the specs right. The weight difference without fuel is 94,80 pounds. That's still a lot, but in my experience the 690 feels heavier than it is and the 790 feels much lighter. If you look for a compromise between road and offroad i would go for the 790. If you go mainly offroad, then i would go for the 690 or better for a 500EXC.

    • @kylehiebert22
      @kylehiebert22 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure 100 lbs matters when you are riding aggressive trails but why are you picking a 690 to do that? As mentioned you would be better off with a 500exc or similar. A 790 is not designed for "real" off road trails, although I'm sure it could handle quite a bit, it's a adventure bike. That 100lbs of extra weight is an advantage on the highway. Plus the vibrations from that single cylinder 690 on long highway runs, no thanks. The 690 is like the jack of all trades master of none.

    Congratulations on your channel! I have some doubts regarding the 790: Comparing them to each other, we already know that the R works better in OFF ROAD and the S in ON ROAD, but which one do you think has the greatest advantage? Let me explain: if the R we put a 10 points in OFF and the S a 10 points in ON, how much score do they have in their weakness? ( The R in ON and the S in OFF).
    I have an ATAS 2019 and as you well say when the Indian is not very good, the best arrow he must have :-) so my question is: Does the R also go by road like Africa? (I understand that Off goes better and is easier to drive it) or the 790S goes the same for OFF as Africa? (I understand that it goes better by road than ATAS). By road I mean mountain curves not to travel as a couple. Thanks in advance and Greetings

    • @BigRockMoto
      @BigRockMoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would not buy an S, because I don't see how it is any better on road than the R. But, the R is much better offroad than the S. Compared to ATAS, neither will be as good for road travel, but they both will be easier to drive off tarmac.
