There are several things that I've loved for a while now... One is that you Americans or maybe I should say 'people in the west', do so much by yourselves, fixing things up all on your own, your rides, cars, houses, boats, freakin planes, and helicopters! I love it. When I was in florida a few years ago to study, I was floored by the beautiful garages I saw all over my neighborhood with all those tools crowded on them walls. And the fact that yawl know how to use them. I followed suit and realized from You guys that there HAS to be a workshop manual somewhere. And i have become a DIY guy. I am from india, and we have mechanics and servants (called helpers haha) and cleaners and drivers; we rarely do repairs on our stuff ourselves. And I love youtube for opening up a window into all yawls worlds for us to learn from. I have a duke 390 and I have done all the basic servicing myself. Comment getting too long, but to give some perspective, almost no one NO one uses or has heard of the torque wrench (that I use) in most mechanic shops in India too. Even at ktm, ..I've checked! Haha. Kept safe in some hidden drawer somewhere. Its just 'monkey see monkey do' and efficiency can go hang. I love it! Sorry for the long comment. And i really like what your bike's looking like after the mods! Sexy stuff. Thank u for this video. The one finger clutch thing i am really interested in.
Dude. It’s looking like a proper adventure weapon now. Love the mods. I like how everything you buy is for a purpose too and no silly bolt-ons. Love you’re channel mate. You’re editing skills have really shown through lately. Keep up the good work my friend.
A fairly inexpensive way to get all-day riding comfort from your "R" is to install an "S" seat with the KTM accessory cool seat cover. The seat cover is constructed to give some "suspension" and allow cool air to flow through it. It has been a magic combo, allowing me to ride a couple of 12 hours stints in the saddle with comfort. I will also mention that because I ride a lot of loose and often deep gravel, I thought I'd try the Motoz Adventure front tire. The combination of the 790 and the Motos Adventure is the best gravel combo I've ever had, and I've had quite a few.
@@BigRockMoto hy, a question: did you mount the saddlebags without frame? i have seen that you mount only a protection for the heat on the exhaust..is it enough for use them in a correct way? The lateral saddlebags don t impact on the wheels spokes
Flip the break pedal up, more comfort when standing. Use Locktite (the non-permanent). Careful to ensure you have freeplay with the Camel 1-finger pin, thin line to clutch slippage under heavy load. I have the Mosko Moto Rackless 80 and the Camel ADV heat shield and neck brace and am very happy with all three of them. Had the Tusk luggage been available I might have gone with them. They are quite a bit cheaper.
Really like to 790/890 as a lighter and less powerful option to replace my 2015 R1200gs for long dirt excursions in South Africa. The only reason I've not made the change is I need a reliable bike that I can trust ,and I'm not sure KTM is that bike. The GS is actually remarkably capable and massively comfortable on endless dirt roads, only issue is controlling that torque off road for long periods is torture on my right wrist, much more so than the weight handicap. I get the distinct sense you found KTM's Achilles heel seeing you own a T7 right now (I owned a 1190 adventure R for 45,000 kms, which wasn't too bad I must add, but not suitable for riding solo far away from a dealer. Anyone that disagrees has never replaced an air filter on one in the bush - a rather important thing to do in very dusty environments and yes I know they made the process simpler on the 790/890). Other than the displacement, would really want to know what improvements were made moving from the 790 to 890 especially in addressing longevity.
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of getting that headlight guard you have. I went with the Touratech riser spacers because they were the cheapest option to experiment with, bar position and height makes a huge difference for the ergonomics of the 790.

Nice set up! Tusk stuff is nice for the $$. Like those bars but I can't justify the cost since my off roading is less vigorous. I wen't with the Rade Garage foot pegs, lighter aluminum (I prefer), larger, lower and orange anodize for some bling. Camel stuff is nice, so far I have the awesome clutch arm. Since you are going to do the Cyclops lights, do the turn signals too while at it. They are awesome! Just do it! I recommend the Seat Concepts Comfort in either std. or tall (I have the std.). For the money they have to be the best deal in AM seats! Lots of exhaust options out there and with the luggage, will need a heat shield for most. If you do swap I'd highly recommend looking closer at the Danish made Dobermann in Ti; 3 lbs. lighter, impeccable craftsmanship, nicely priced, great looking and sounding (even with the cat). Agree with your view of the Karoo 3's; OK tires, I had them on my DR650 too but don't like the front for off road, rear not too bad. They aren't the smoothest street tire either which I did not think I noticed until I switched them out to Motoz GPS, noticeably smoother on pavement and better off road in most cases. Trying hard to wear the Karoo's out for better tires! Oh yea, put in a LiFePo battery and save 5 more pounds! I have a 12 year old Shorai (yes, 12 years!) that is still going strong in my DR! With the Ti exhaust and LiFe batt. the improved 'flickability' is noticeable.

I'm just over 1000 miles and I don't have evidence of the condensation issue on the TFT, but I was hit by the well documented faulty tail light sensor, which also takes out the cruise control. It's a great bike, but these problems are long standing. It's annoying that KTM aren't on top of them yet.

What’s about the KTM power parts skid plate, it has the advantage that it protect the fuel tank also. I had a few drops (with speed) and they protected everything really good. Ok ther are a few scratches but I consider that as a reminder to avoid the same bad choices 😅.
Good review of farkles you are using. I like the fact that Tusk is providing some competition to MM, whose bags are very expensive if you live outside the US. Yesterday my friend turned up on his 790 Rally and he had a superb bashplate which was framed mounted and had an extra exhaust cover plate. And big congratulations for remaining sponsor free. There are too many “individuals” on YT who are being given products for free, which in my mind compromises the message to riders who are look ing for objective opinions. Is the 500 feeling a bit jealous?
If you remove the cat, you need to re-map ( flash ) the ECU. Otherwise, the engine will work with excess air to fuel ratio, gas is hotter, in the long term you will damage the valves and head. Modern engines work already with a very lean mixture from the factory, don't touch the cat, unless you flash the ECU on a proper test bench.
@@BigRockMoto I have seen too many engines damaged because of removing cat, without adjusting the fuel management. If you like there's a very good channel, they run a workshop, where they flesh ECU according to the new exhaust and air intake. The name is: "e-Moto Garage Latina", it's Italian, but they have the subs. I'm an engineer, please, if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.
If you remove the side panels, can you still mount the Tusk rackless system? I believe some people even use those spaces for tool kits and/or first aid kits with bags tie wrapped to the frame.
have almost everything for upgrades what you have.... my extras would be radiator metal cover, seat concept comfort seat, headlight cover (I think you have it too) and for skid plate AXP one, worth to check it out,,,,,, for luggage I have Givi aluminum black 30L top box and for the sides still didn't decide but for sure it will be soft! Cool mods, thank you, cheers V!
If I had a dollar for everytime you say "So"... I'd be rich right now :) Good video for the rest. Thinking of getting a 790 myself. Trying to figure out bags and stuff.
I know you don’t have this bike anymore but if you did would you use the soft bags again or would you go with a hard rack. I like the fit of the soft bags but the straps seem like a pain. I like the idea of popping the bags off to bring to my room or put in my tent. I think I saw you use these Tusk bags on the Tenere.
Did you look into and decide to buy a damper? I’ve got the 790 2020 rally and am considering a damper, vibration damper, mid pipe decat with rot power commander and intake. Any advice before making these big investments would be appreciated
Well i used the Vstrom 650xt on offroad fire route .. but for harder stuff maybe a lighter bike will be better .. will you consider in getting a KTM 390 adventure for adv ride?!
whats the reliability of the ktm 790? I have the 890 and have had brake light issues luckily covered under warranty but I am curious about what issues you had? Looking to get the ktm 1290 SAS or SAR if you want to review that!
Can you please tell me the brand of those heated grips you have on your 790? Do they work well. Its Coming into winter down here in Australia. I flipped my screen completely upside down. (It does fit that way). It fixed the wind buffeting, but i got lots of bugs in my face. :( I've ordered the small screen to hopefully fix the wind buffeting issue with out the bugs :) Thanks for all the great info.
Just got a 20 20 790 adventure R. I love the look of the bike Do you not find it really hard and sore after half an hour? It’s very uncomfortable. I don’t know how are you did 600 km on that seat😀 I also find the engine sounds very noisy like a cement mixer filled with spanners. I have an old 750 super Ten Which will go to the grave with me. In contrast it’s just so quiet and smooth and so comfortable, and probably a lot more reliable. I won’t be able to suffer holding onto my 790 unless I can get a comfortable and lower seat😢
I ordered excursion tusk bags for the Honda 300 rally I haven’t received them but I am afraid I should’ve got the highlands ? Do you think the size of my bike would merit the larger bag system? Buy the way I switched to your videos from the rest of the guys I watched them come up and then get bought out and sell out “dork in the road, adventure daily etc.” people appreciate honesty !
I'm a subscriber, excellent video! Instead of upgrading the seat pack a shearing wall seat cover in your luggage, so you can vary the feel of what you're sitting on every other day. I see you already added the orange piece onto the bottom of your kickstand but it's still looks like you might need something to go on the bottom of your kickstand to make it wider to hold it up and lose gravel or dirt, or even pavement which has gotten too hot
Thanks, Ian, great videos, really enjoy them. I very much like your non-sponsored approach. Can you tell me about the Klim Krios Pro? Do you plan to do a review? Do you like it? How does it compare to the Shoei Hornet and the Arai XD4? Thanks! Peter from Hungary.
Would this look too big for crf300l? I want bags for 2 day camping, with tent, folding chair and table, jet boil, meals, clothes, sleeping bag and water. I was thinking excursions reckless might be too small
Great video nice mods am doing very similar on my new 790. I am also looking at skid plates as stock is pretty useless also looking at Black Dog or maybe Tourtech keep us posted? Also looking at crash bars not sure yet. I went with the expensive but nice sounding Akrapovic not as loud as others available but not a problem with neighbors or police
Big Rock Moto & Outdoors I just did a very simple upgrade to stock horn (more like scooter buzzer) I believe for safety you need to be heard to be respected Very inexpensive under $20 on Amazon purchased a Fiamm Freeway Blaster . I used the stock bracket just bolted in connected wire connctors done in under an hour all that is needed is 8mm and 10mm wrench
Love your videos! I'm about to the pull the trigger on the Highland x2 rackless luggage, but would love your opinion on it. Are you still using it now that you have the Norden?
I know this is a older video but hoping you can answer a few questions. Did you remove the passenger grab bars and did you you use the straightest position as far as the side bag mounting holes ? Thanks
Since the front tire isn't driven, I believe the reverse pattern is used for better handling and stopping. It digs in if the tire starts to wash out, or during heavy braking. I'm pretty happy with these tires... So far have handled more than I expected them to. Bike is looking good. 👍
@@dand.4657 On my XR650L after I had just bought it, I mounted the Tusk Dualsport front tire backwards resulting in reversed Chevrons as on the 790 R stock tires....the bike was nearly unrideable with very little directional control in both hardpack and soft sand. I was almost ready to sell the bike! Rotated the tire and it rides fine now. Still not the best tire for directional stability but I'm having fun until it wears out.
Before adjusting the windshield did you try riding the bike without the mirrors to see how much buffeting they cause? I went with foldable bar end mirrors on Rotty mounts and eliminated mirror buffeting, which allowed the windshield to do a better job.
A combination of the stock "S" seat, which fits on the "R", with the KTM accessory cool seat cover is magic for me. I have spent a couple of 12 hour days on my bike equipped like this (over 1000 km), something I couldn't do before.
I have the Adventure R with stock seat, I don't ride a massive amount but have spent 600K plus days in the saddle without too much issue, in fact I have a 650 Dakar with a way softer seat and would say the KTM seat is at least as comfortable if not more after the same amount if riding
I've ordered a seat concepts comfort seat. I ordered it on July 17 and it still has not shipped. Parts for this bike are in demand and therefore you might end up waiting. I installed a BDCW skid plate and light brackets. The skid plate is probably more rugged than I will need for the riding I tend to do. I went with the pannier rack from Mosko Moto (which are made by Outback Mototec) and I already had the Mosko bags on another bike. Still need the hand guards. I might be interested in doing the decat in the future, so please make a video about that. I need to finish wiring the lights and install and wire the grip heaters.
Is this (and other middleweight adv bikes too) good for long distance trips (anything over 600 miles) like bikes in the bigger bracket (1290 super adv, 1200 GS)
Given the side fairings are removable for storage purposes, how do you find the pressure on those fairing mounts with the rackless system? I wouldve thought after many miles on bumpy trails, the weight of the side bags would become a bit much
Have you experienced any issues with your fuel gauge? At less than 1000 miles it always displayed empty, no matter how full. The KTM service mechanic told it was common due to ethanol causing swelling in the fuel level sensor. I hope not. I have begun using no ethanol gas. I live near a lake and the gas stations sell recreational gas.
I know this is a really old vid but I am curious how this 790/890 would compare to the Tenere. I'm only 5'8'' and was thinking about the KTM because of how the weight is low. Having real second thoughts on the T7 after your "D" grade on picking it up. That said, I'm am concerned with reliability on the KTM. Thanks for the feedback.
I have a video coming soon on this. I prefer the T7 because it's japanese and built like a swiss watch. The KTM is faster, better suspension, more fuel, but the quality is lacking, and I don't trust it in the middle of nowhere like I do the T7
Hi. Do you have a recent update on ownership. Just yesterday, I started thinking my next bike will be a 790R. But then I started reading some forum concerns about reliability.your thoughts so far? Ross
Thanks for your videos, very descriptive, and honest reviews. I also love the Camel products, the heat shield, and one finger clutch work very well. How do you like the cruise control? Thinking of that upgrade next and the BDCW skid plate too.
I wen't with a Seat Concepts std. comfort. Still kinda' firm but flat and more surface area for support so a lot better. Wen't with the Diamante vinyl too, very sharp looking!

I was listening to your comment around changing the exhaust for better sound, unless you are going to a decat you are wasting your time. I crashed my 790 and damaged the muffler so replaced with the akra which made negligible difference, I have video I can post of the sound difference which I can share if you like. The interesting thing was I think mine ran worse with the akra and catalytic converter it seemed to run rich and lost that raw throttle response which was especially noticeable in rally mode. I then put in an arrow decat and everything went back to normal in terms of tune, I didn’t notice any real performance gain but the sound is now what you would expect. I have read lots of people saying it will mess with the tune but My KTM dealer here seems to to thing it is fine and not a problem certainly from a riding perspective runs much like stock but with a beautiful growl without being obnoxious. So in summary great to do but only with the decat or you will be very disappointed. cheers Geoff
@@FanOWater I use the storage as well, but when you are packing that much luggage on a longer trip, whatever is in those small storage compartments can easily be carried in the pack on luggage.
Haven't heard any arguments for environmental reasons to have catalytic converter from any bike-youtubers. Bikers want the be close to nature and still only thing they seem to care is the need for more noise, no matter the price. Learn to respect nature, because your life depends on it. Nice bike!
I'd be more afraid to damage the pannier rack when driving it around without the paniers on. That's the one problem with having a pannier rack. If you want to ride without taking your panniers you have all of the added weight and width of the pannier rack.
Personally I really object to those TUSK decals all over the place . . . . I always remove as much of that kind of advertising shite as possible . . . . it strongly effects my purchasing decisions.
Jesus... Why have to spend hundreds of dollars to get an already expensive bike that is supposed to be designed for adventure riding. You should be able to pay and ride!! It supposed to be designed already. Just ride the damn thing. Some people would bitch if hung with new rope!

Thanks. Yes, the 500 is jealous! I need more free time to ride.
790 owners report no issues removing it, but I would be worried
@@BigRockMoto I have seen too many engines damaged because of removing cat, without adjusting the fuel management. If you like there's a very good channel, they run a workshop, where they flesh ECU according to the new exhaust and air intake. The name is: "e-Moto Garage Latina", it's Italian, but they have the subs. I'm an engineer, please, if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.
I really want the Highland system for my 790.. can you do a video on what and how you pack those up??
Thank you for the great video!!
I'll try to do that! The videos on their website are really good if you haven't seen them.
I agree, im curious what I can really get in, just wondering if the dry bags included are hard to load when packed.
Thanks for the quick response!!
Yeah i never pack the dry bags first, too hard to get in. Put dry bags into luggage then pack
@@BigRockMoto you mentioned the light scratching on the plastics, one of my buddies bought clear vinyl and the other one took the plastics off .
If you remove the side panels, can you still mount the Tusk rackless system? I believe some people even use those spaces for tool kits and/or first aid kits with bags tie wrapped to the frame.
Great video. Thank you for sharing
have almost everything for upgrades what you have.... my extras would be radiator metal cover, seat concept comfort seat, headlight cover (I think you have it too) and for skid plate AXP one, worth to check it out,,,,,, for luggage I have Givi aluminum black 30L top box and for the sides still didn't decide but for sure it will be soft! Cool mods, thank you, cheers V!
I just ordered a seat...
What are your favorite mods for the 790?? Let us know below.
If I had a dollar for everytime you say "So"... I'd be rich right now :)
Good video for the rest.
I like the new generation Highland X2 rackless system. My choice. No need for racks. Inner bags easy to remove to take to hotel
Great upgrades i will do the same
Do you have a link to the flex bars? I don't see it in your description
Pardon me if this is a stupid question, but the soft pannier on the right-hand side: Doesn't it get burned by the pipe?
no
Can you please tell me the brand of those heated grips you have on your 790? Do they work well. Its Coming into winter down here in Australia.
I flipped my screen completely upside down. (It does fit that way). It fixed the wind buffeting, but i got lots of bugs in my face. :(
I've ordered the small screen to hopefully fix the wind buffeting issue with out the bugs :) Thanks for all the great info.
Either will work for you
Hi Dude , I watch your videos with great interest. Excellent keep doing it. What is the two cross bars on your handle bars ? Are they damping again?
Review coming!
Great video as always. How did you manage to instal the Koso heated grips? I found that the throttle tube was not as stock and did not fit. Cheers
You don't need the crash bars on this bike, in my opinion
Big Rock Moto & Outdoors I just did a very simple upgrade to stock horn (more like scooter buzzer)
I believe for safety you need to be heard to be respected
Very inexpensive under $20 on Amazon purchased a Fiamm Freeway Blaster . I used the stock bracket just bolted in connected wire connctors done in under an hour all that is needed is 8mm and 10mm wrench
@@patrickdelaney1315 Same, works great.
How would this set up work for BMW F650 GS? Spending little time to move a strap to fill the tank? Thank u. Great work like always!!!
Great review! Can you share why tusk vs mosko ? Curious on your perspective..
Price - these cost half of the Mosko. Plus I always have good experiences with Tusk products.
Love your videos! I'm about to the pull the trigger on the Highland x2 rackless luggage, but would love your opinion on it. Are you still using it now that you have the Norden?
Is it possible to mount it for a pillion passenger?
It would be interesting to learn more about the bolts breaking out on the frame / headlight cowl. What is your opinion on this?
Needs the brace
Does that TUSK reckless come with the exhaust shield? Thanks! I'm about to pull the trigger on one....
I know this is a older video but hoping you can answer a few questions. Did you remove the passenger grab bars and did you you use the straightest position as far as the side bag mounting holes ? Thanks
Follow Foot Peg Hardware...does mount to Engine
Thinking of buying the Koso Apollo heated grips for my R. They however come in two lengths 120mm and 130mm, which do you have?
The chevron pattern on the front tire almost makes it seem like it is mounted backwards. Is that the correct orientation?
Yep, I thought the same thing but it is correct.
You mentioned a video where you discuss the suspension set up, which one is it?
Sorry that is coming in a day or two.
i think its time for a trip down the pan american highway to Ushuaia and back to realky test it out ;)
Yep, work is getting in the way of my life!
Before adjusting the windshield did you try riding the bike without the mirrors to see how much buffeting they cause? I went with foldable bar end mirrors on Rotty mounts and eliminated mirror buffeting, which allowed the windshield to do a better job.
Do you have issue with too much heat coming up from the bike? Like my 1090?
Hey, I am really curious about the seat comfort for long rides, please let us know!
Will do!
Great video, do you think they could be mounted on a T7 without the rear rack? Thanks
Oh man I just ordered a seat too... darn.
I think twisted Throttle or maybe Rocky Mt had them in stock for the same price and probably free shipping. My seat showed up yesterday.
I wouldve thought after many miles on bumpy trails, the weight of the side bags would become a bit much
Time will tell but it seems fine
Hi, what do you put on your exhaust in order to not burn your luggage?
Have you experienced any issues with your fuel gauge? At less than 1000 miles it always displayed empty, no matter how full. The KTM service mechanic told it was common due to ethanol causing swelling in the fuel level sensor. I hope not. I have begun using no ethanol gas. I live near a lake and the gas stations sell recreational gas.
Haven't had that issue myself
Thanks. Also interested in your thoughts on the Krio pro...I’m considering that or the XD4. Tx
Love it - light, great ventilation, comfortable, love the strap. Review coming soon!
@@BigRockMoto great thanks much!
What about the Rade Garage rally tower? Would you consider one? It might help reducing the buffeting.
According to people on advrider it really.doesnt
So your exhaust shield that the bag rests on, you can put your hand on that after the bike runs a few minutes? Not at all hot? Cool 👍 good video
All that luggage are you travelling like itchy?
Hi. Do you have a recent update on ownership. Just yesterday, I started thinking my next bike will be a 790R. But then I started reading some forum concerns about reliability.your thoughts so far? Ross
👍
Does the 790 seem to have enough power? Comfortable for a long trip ?
Yes and yes
@@BigRockMoto , thanks
Thanks for your videos, very descriptive, and honest reviews. I also love the Camel products, the heat shield, and one finger clutch work very well. How do you like the cruise control? Thinking of that upgrade next and the BDCW skid plate too.
LOVE cruise
Also, sometime can you record the procedure needed to mount and strap the bags to your bike? Always helpful. Thanks.
Check out Rocky Mountain ATV MC, they have good videos on these
The stock seat sucks on long rides. It was the first thing I ordered for my bike.
I wen't with a Seat Concepts std. comfort. Still kinda' firm but flat and more surface area for support so a lot better. Wen't with the Diamante vinyl too, very sharp looking!
It took a long time to break in, but I think the stock seat is fine and i have done many 500+ mile days.
A combination of the stock "S" seat, which fits on the "R", with the KTM accessory cool seat cover is magic for me. I have spent a couple of 12 hour days on my bike equipped like this (over 1000 km), something I couldn't do before.
Stock seat not bad for me once you find your spot did about 250 miles in one day was comfy
Sherco Rider, how is the overall performance and comfort on the 790 on a long trip ?
If you had a Tiger 900 in your garage as well, which of these would you keep? Have you tried a 900?
No but I would love to! Tiger seems more road oriented, I do love three cylinder engines though!
You didn't own that bike very long did you?
Where do you buy tusk products online?
Rocky Mountain Adv have good selection
Thank you.
What do you think about upcoming KTM Adventure 890 R ?
Same bike with more power?
Get the Rallye seat - it's a little bit higher.
Debating on 701 long range or 790r.
When using the rackless system just remove the sidecovers.
There are two storage areas in the rear side covers. While the bare frame looks cool, I am using the storage areas.
@@FanOWater I use the storage as well, but when you are packing that much luggage on a longer trip, whatever is in those small storage compartments can easily be carried in the pack on luggage.
Fast forward a year and your ride is a Honda AT.
Haven't heard any arguments for environmental reasons to have catalytic converter from any bike-youtubers. Bikers want the be close to nature and still only thing they seem to care is the need for more noise, no matter the price. Learn to respect nature, because your life depends on it. Nice bike!
Aren't you afraid to damage the bike when you drop it without a rack? :)
I'd be more afraid to damage the pannier rack when driving it around without the paniers on. That's the one problem with having a pannier rack. If you want to ride without taking your panniers you have all of the added weight and width of the pannier rack.
Instead of thinking that you need a lower foot peg you can flip the brake pedal piece instead...
Tried that but it didn't feel right. What I'd like is a bit more legroom
Big Rock Moto & Outdoors IMS has different foot pegs from what I’ve heard on Adventure Rider Radio podcast
Personally I really object to those TUSK decals all over the place . . . . I always remove as much of that kind of advertising shite as possible . . . . it strongly effects my purchasing decisions.
Nice job, thanks. Talk a little slower on your next one.
Where’s the espresso maker? Not an adventure bike without one. Pffft.
Those tusk rackless are no where to be found now 😒
Excelente moto ! esta es la mia: th-cam.com/video/gj81NDu8KGQ/w-d-xo.html
Jesus... Why have to spend hundreds of dollars to get an already expensive bike that is supposed to be designed for adventure riding. You should be able to pay and ride!! It supposed to be designed already. Just ride the damn thing. Some people would bitch if hung with new rope!
Some of the additions aren't necessary just my preference. You don't have to change things if you don't want to. The bike works fine stock.
