    NOTES:
    1. I always upload in 4K but this video shows in max 1440P - I apologize.
    2. I used an ND filter to create a cinematic "blur" effect in the riding segments - do you like this, or prefer a smoother higher framerate look? Please let me know.
    3. In-depth review coming soon, covering everything not shown in this ride video.

IAN!!!!!!!!! Im am so stoked that you got tothrown a leg over it! I had a 2017 SAR and it was the most incredible bike that i have ever ridden. Ì could ride it harder on highway than any street bike I've owned. Offroad was amazing. Owning a 1290 SAR is a visceral experience. You are engaged the second the LC8 wakes up.
I only owned it for 5 months. I couldn't keep it out of the shop. I had to have the ECU replaced twice, numerous leaks from hoses rubbing on something, the gas tank kept leaking, and overall build quality was just really bad. The bike stranded me a fewtimes because it would stop recognizing the fob.
I still think about the SAR, it was the best riding experience Ive had. But not the best ownership. But I think I think i would be willing to give it another shot.

I'm going to comment before you start riding which I normally don't do but, I have 7,500 miles on my 2023 1290 SA-R and on my 4th rear tire😂. I ride a lot of off road, single track and did the first 3 sections of the UTBDR last year on it. I absolutely love this bike.
What you said right before the drop test, about the KTM being fun, that's exactly why I traded my '22 Africa Twin for the 1290. Regarding the suspension, when I first took my 1290 on some single track I hit a jump where I got a little air, about 3' and it didn't bottom out. That's where I realized the suspension was top notch and I'm 6' 230#. This bike is an absolute beast. I keep mine on rally mode, slip #6.
you probably know this but, when you have the rear ABS off you can't use the cruise control. I thought my bike was broken before I figured that out🙄
YES, I am so glad I came from sport bikes because trail braking is really important on this bike. It helpes compensate for the big front wheel by closing the rake % to turn in faster. Um, yes, it really wants to stay at 100..lol
Very fun to watch and thank you

Fun ride impression! Those 70 MPH runs down that bumpy dirt road got my heart pumping.
It wouldn't be a real 1st riding impression of a 1290R if there wasn't mild profanity in the video. Ian is a much better man than I am on that front, as there would be extreme profanity with liberal use of the F bomb 😆
It seems strange to have an "off road oriented" large capacity ADV bike. The BMW is more what one expects for a big ADV - luxury class, big engine with lots of power, full of gadgets and features. In contrast, this KTM is a comparatively stripped down and purposeful off road worthy missile that performs fantastically well but easily can overwhelm it's bumpy tires and generate ludicrous speed in a mind warping way. I have a tuned up 701 that can do that to a rider in the dirt- a quick 3rd gear "braap" and ya'll are breaking 65 MPH, so I can't even imagine riding this massively powerful bike on dirt - obviously the right ride map and a lot of throttle hand discipline is required.
Does this KTM answer a question that nobody in their right mind is asking? Whatever - it is a badass awesome bike, and it is a big fat thumb in the eye to a fun policed, overly sanitized for our protection ass gasket world. This is a bike that will harshly punish rider stupidity, as any serious high performance bike should do.
Coincidentally saw an article that mentioned John Penton today, of course Penton got KTM into the MC business back in 1968, just look at what that has led to!

This is a glowing review of the 1290. I’d be interested in your thoughts versus your R1300GS. Don’t think I could trust KTM again after my 890 ownership experience though, no matter how much fun it may be to ride. My 890 absolutely blew me away with how it rode, but it needed to be able to start first, and that’s what it was incapable of doing in a predictable manner.

The elephant in the room with KTM is quality and reliability. It is NOT bias or hate against KTM if you research it. Engine problems, in particular with the 790/890 (including Husqvarna 901) with premature camshaft wear, as well as electrical and engine problems with the 1290, are serious issues. Just do a quick search. And KTM has not exactly stepped up in dealing with most of these. I was supposed to have a KTM 1290 SAS available as one of the bikes on a tour of Sardinia, Corsica and Italy in June. The two BMWs, Honda, two Ducatis, two Triumphs and Suzuki were ALL in service…the NEW KTM had to be returned for electrical and engine problems. So as much, Ian, as the KTM may be a hoot to ride, when it works, my two week tour (and my motorcycle season overall) negate KTM in my book until they get their 💩 together.

Had a 790R with many miles, now on my 2nd 890R. My real only gripe is the steering head bearings need a nip up after about 1000km on all bikes. People complain about headshake, that's the cause and the quick fix. My 1st 890 had a rear brake sensor issue. Other than that, all good.
Been reading about the cam issue, but touch wood have not been affected by it myself Also read about the clutch issues, mostly caused by riders not leaving any play on the lever and tensioning it up taught so it drags. KTM are selling stacks of these bikes, while there are faults I'm not convinced the noise volume is entirely justified by a few disgruntled customers. Maybe though I am just lucky.

I suspect KTM do not do enough testing before they release new models. I bought the previous 1290 SAS at the end of its production run (2020) by which time they seem to have sorted the common problems: dust in the air box and electrical gremlins. With the new models already announced, there were a lot of unsold bikes in the showrooms and in Oct 2020 I got a great deal on a new bike. I have had no problems apart from its eating batteries (currently trying a lithium).

Really great ride review. Nicely filmed and edited, ridden on really lovely terrain, and a nice description of this thing (I don't have a 1290R, but I have a 1290S and 890R and I'm picking up what you're putting down). You were maintaining a good pace! One confusing thing is that there is Rally "mode", where the throttle map and traction control are individually adjusted, and Rally throttle map (which is ridiculously sensitive on the 890R and I cannot imagine how crazy it is on the 1290R). I really like Rally mode, which allows more customization of the riding experience than the basic Off road, Street, and Sport settings, which have the throttle map, traction control, wheelie control, etc, baked right in. That said, I rarely change settings within Rally mode. Once I find a throttle map and TC setting I like, I tend to leave it. Thanks again for a detailed and thoughtful first ride presentation.
Edit: your ND filter on the camera really makes for great video quality.

16:15 i agree that rally throttle is ridiculously jumpy which I dont like because you really need to feather the throttle
    Sport is the best on-road
Offroad is good ... off the road :))
The rain mode is also noticeable in reducing power output which makes riding in the wet a lot less stressful
23:02 if you get the powerparts lowered seat it is almost just as low as the superadventure S which makes it waaaay more aproachable
26:44 a crash WILL on occasion rip your mirrors out which may also leave you without a clutch or brake lever. It happened to me during a rally raid event. My solution was to buy some cheap mirror mounts and i just put them next to the OEM ones. That way i can break a mirror without losing a lever. But I never managed to bang a mirror hard enough since then. the more inward position protects them better.
Mind you this happened with Barkbuster-like protectors not the dumb plastic OEM ones.

Best value on the market for a big adventure bike. The fuel economy really depends on your right hand. You can get 50 mph if you ride conservatively, or if you ride it like you stole it, you'll get more like 44 mpg. 😂 one big advantage on the S version is the semi active suspension. Want it to be lazy no problem it can be lazy. Want to shred some canyons it will stiffen up with the push of a couple buttons. So good. One thing that drove my ocd crazy was watching you start the bike. It is a one touch start. You press it and let it go and it does it's thing. You dont have to hold it down. The best part for me was I got mine on closeout for 17,600. 😁

Never wanted to even consider bar risers but after constant and pretty severe neck pain I bought some 3/4" risers for my t7 and all the pain went away. I can ride all day again, no worries. Great review. I have run the gamut of KTM adventure bikes. I had an older 2017 1290 which must be night and day compare to the 2024 model. It was a great bike even back then. My whole challenge with adventure bikes has been the weight as I get older (67 now), and being able to lift the bike in rough hilly terrain. I even had weight issues with my 690r coming down from Mt. Patterson (the wrong way) and having to lift it above 10,000 feet elevation. I have a Gas Gas 500 now:) Back to the 1290....your review sure makes me want to buy one until you got to the lifting the bike part. Agree that KTMs are great values for what you get. The KTM electronics are fantastic, but I have to say it was kind of refreshing the other day to ride my Gas Gas to the dirt and when I got to the dirt I had to change nothing because that bike has no ABS and no traction control. Less critical on the small bikes though. I look forward to your full review of the 1290 although this initial review was pretty fantastic!

I just bought the same bike a month ago and it seems Ian’s been enjoying it as much as I have. 4500kms in it and so far I’m equally impressed. One thing that I was very surprised by is how easy it is to control the power to the rear wheel in technical terrain like loose washed out rutted tracks and mud. Coming from a 105hp 890R I thought this thing was going to be breaking loose and stepping sideways and constantly in technical terrain but the power delivery to the week is just as easy to control as the 890 was.. The variable slip in rally mode is just genius (same on the 890).
Most of the time on gravel it almost feels like riding a slightly heavier 890 with a bit more grunt down low. Twin track is still fun and fast but this bike requires more room for stopping due to the extra weight. I do miss the lighter weight in the slower technical stuff though. I know once it starts to fall there’s almost no saving it, whereas the 890 I could almost always wrestle it back up before it hit the ground. Long legs help there. On the road it feels better than the 890. I guess the weight helps with stability but I think art if the smoothness and stability also comes from the geometry. Fantastic bike that’s far more exciting than any of the competition that I’ve ridden!

Having been on a 990r over the last 10 years, I finally put a deposit down on an 890r a little over a year ago. But after having the chance to ride one, the parallel twin just seemed soulless. Bought a 1290r instead. Smartest thing I ever did.

I agree... It's probably a good value especially if you can take advantage of all that power and capability. It would be just too much for me. Even 100HP is so much for my needs or even to have fun. The 790/890 have always been interesting to me.
Being in New York City, there is just something about riding around on a street bike like a Triumph Classic or Royal Enfield. Even do some road trips around the area. I just see myself doing lots of that on the street bike. On longer trips where backroads would be involved, certainly the adventure bike would be the pick.
    Great review! Keep having fun!
