Do it in a doorway! Put both hands on the handlebars as soon as possible, while keeping eyes focused on a point in the distance. It's a zen-like thing, really. As such, it can be quite fulfilling. But more importantly, riding rollers is far, far better for one's cadence and balance than a stationary indoor trainer. Indeed, training on rollers might just prevent serious accidents on the road because you are less likely to swerve (while looking back or while making adjustments, etc), and you are more likely to successfully recover from a slippery crisis situation if you have trained on rollers. Back in the 1980s, when rollers were more commonly used, when riding behind cyclists, it was very easy to identify those who have done extensive training on rollers and those who have not. (A person who rode rollers could maintain incredibly straight lines while riding, no matter what her/his upper body was doing.)
Steve is correct. All you need is a doorway, not some prerequisite level of cycling experience. I was riding rollers before I ever learned to ride in the pack or entered a race.
If you're completely new to rollers, don't use your clips! Ride with a standard flat pedal so you can put your foot down if need be. Clipping in is asking for trouble! Also another good training method with rollers is to use a fixed gear bike. It keeps you momentum fluid on the roller and will help stop a jerky technique. :)
A trick they teach the new folk at the track is to hold the center of the handlebar anytime you're worried about stability, particularly with one hand, because you have less force pushing the bars away from you (so you're more stable). So when you're first getting started with rollers, keep your hands on the top of the bars, as close to the center as possible. You do *not* need, or want, extra leverage trying to move the bars!
Don't get discouraged - just remember to push off on your lead foot in one smooth motion to get your rear wheel started to establish your balance when you start off. And don't look down at your feet or the front wheel - keep your head up and your body will naturally follow. Rollers just take practice! Good luck!
I get a wall one side and a chair on the other side, the chair only used for mounting/dismounting and whenever something goes wrong, I lean onto the wall and keep pedaling. After half a year (I don't train on it much, almost like 1 or 2 times per month only). I can manage not to fall catastrophically and keep myself balanced without touching anything for around 15 minutes. Yeah I am dumb, but I think a wall or doorway is a roller first timer's best friend. And yes, I only ride on my clipless pedals.
Doorway, countertop, medium gear, think smooth even spin, look at something directly in line with wheels. Hands close to handlebar stem. Work on your spin, don't give up
Big Tip here: When you're first starting out, put the rollers in a doorway (with even leveled surfaces on either side) so that you can easily lean on the doorway or put your hands out if needed. And also... don't START in your drops :P
Lmfao, starting in the drops got me, too. After being clipped in as a n00b. This dude clearly did zero research on how to start when you have zero experience
+Osvaldo Guimarães well almost epic! I knew it was coming. How did you like that stroke with the knees flying in multi axis planes? A miracle he rides straight. But then again
this video is the greatest. the title is hilarious, what happens is hilarious, his look is hilarious...try free motion rollers, they might be easier. also, solid try for your first time!
yeah...definitely seemed like the front roller was not as far forward as it needed to be. Just ahead of the axle is optimal IMO. Totally unreal clip speed for sure! I think that's what I'm going to practice on now lol
when i first used rollers i had to spend quite a bit of time to get used to holding the balance on them, because its way harder on rollers. Then when i learned it there would still be some small disasters here and there, so what i did was i sold the rollers and bought one that holds the backtire on the rearaxle and it worked way better, and i could concentrate alot more on my warmup session than on my balance!
I love this guy because this will be me trying to get on the rollers I just ordered for the first time! Keep on trying, see you in the emergency room soon!
I didn't know Spesh did blue tarmacs... Hm... Some people take to rollers really well, (ex-MTBers for example, good balance, trackies too, with their cadence). I bet two weeks later the uploaders could do no handed on them. They're a good workout and a God send for bike skills. My local club does 1hr rollers, 15 min skills and another hour after that. Skills - No handed, one legged, moving from side to side no handed, taking drinks etc. All helps on the road!
the first guy was rite on the money, put the rollers in a doorway then you have both sides to grab if things go wrong. I have Krietler rollers had them for like 8 yrs no probs yet cept for the band needed replacing once.
Sane advice, next time do it next to a wall. You can steady yourself while mounting the bike! I even put a rail in one wall to grab hold of. Works like a charm :)
they are fairly easy to get used to. i was worse than this when i first tried, after half an hour on them the next day i was getting the hang of it. might go for the one footed no hands things sometime, i'll video it and you can all see how many injuries i get..
My room mate was all high and mighty about his roller skills and would be all dramatic when he rode them. One day he was huffing and puffing on my track bike and lost control and dropped off em and shot into the corner of the room. He torqued my forks and front wheel but at least he shut the fuck up about his skills.
Yeah that step-ladder would have been a much better support. You probably shouldn't try rollers until you can ride on the white road line for miles without even thinking about it.
Bit old, but anyway. You can easily seated sprint on them. Standing if your pedal stroke is smooth. Some rollers now move, giving an easier sprint method. Personally, I can sprint on mine up to 95%, then the pedal stroke gets uneven. Overall, yes, just build up to it.
I'm sorry, but that's hilarious..... I had problems in the beginning, too, but then tried In between a doorway....that works pretty good. Now the black paint is wore off from the tires.
I read the description and laughed haha. If you're just getting into road cycling you need much more experience with smooth cadence and bike handling to be able to run on the rollers
the first time i had one. it tooke me a few minutes to figur it ut. what i did was go to a harde gear and prop your self to pedal one side and then dont forget to press tge brakes!! then alakazam your on it
He was doing alright until he let go of the dolly. I like how after he fell he just said, "Nope, another day maybe." Discretion is the better part of valor.
You know the same physics that keep you upright while your riding on real road keeps you upright while on rolling road. So I recommend riding more on the road until you can do something like ride steadily in a straight line.

at least he clipped out on time. I know the feeling all too well, it's even in my nightmares
JOSHUA LIM I did it yesterday and I didn’t flip out in time. 😂
thanks for not taking yourself too seriously - the world needs more people like that - and thanks to your vid, I'll never try that with clips :)
I'm really impressed to be honest. That speed you unclipped was real fast
probably realy loose
Crash to the ground for me

When in doubt, hold your trolley.

Move the front roller forward a little. Roller axle should be a little bit in front of the front wheel axle.
At least two inches. Now, the only thing missing was the slapstick movie audio

Possibly the worst thing you can grab onto. I'm impressed you didn't end up falling onto the dolly neck first.
Ikr?!! When he grabbed that thing to lean on my thoughts were "wow, this is gonna be an epic crash lol". Very disappointed though...
+Osvaldo Guimarães well almost epic! I knew it was coming. How did you like that stroke with the knees flying in multi axis planes? A miracle he rides straight. But then again
Ahh memories...Yea, dude, it's best to forget about the drops when you're getting started and use a doorway or at least a wall.
Lmao
Props for going all in
this video is the greatest. the title is hilarious, what happens is hilarious, his look is hilarious...try free motion rollers, they might be easier. also, solid try for your first time!
after ages ive watch this video and give it a time before get it :)))))))) this is sick brother!
No, just roll in a door frame. .... simple! Keep it up buddy ;-)
yeah...definitely seemed like the front roller was not as far forward as it needed to be. Just ahead of the axle is optimal IMO. Totally unreal clip speed for sure! I think that's what I'm going to practice on now lol
try in the center kf a doorway, fall either side and your supported

My favourite rollers were The Bay City Rollers.
I love this guy because this will be me trying to get on the rollers I just ordered for the first time!
Keep on trying, see you in the emergency room soon!

You did better than I would. I have a balance issue due to my medication.
I set up my rollers between a wall and my bed. The inevitable crashes weren't (very) painful.
the first guy was rite on the money, put the rollers in a doorway then you have both sides to grab if things go wrong. I have Krietler rollers had them for like 8 yrs no probs yet cept for the band needed replacing once.
Lol and I was going to buy rollers until I saw this video
+Stephen Carry
lol
Haha, me too! But now I think is is better not to destroy my bike or myself! :-D
To To rollers are easy and you won’t destroy you bike he nearly had it but his hand was on the hood not the tops
Oh hell no! I’ll get a smart trainer and save my limbs and pretty bike!
I figured out quickly why the helmet indoors!
Your front roller has to be past the first hub.
+Dawson Leng he missed that detail.
Noticed that too...wasn't sure if the camera angle was misrepresenting.
has to be ?
Sane advice, next time do it next to a wall. You can steady yourself while mounting the bike! I even put a rail in one wall to grab hold of. Works like a charm :)
Your helmet served its purpose. Premier rouleau de la stupidité de temps à vélo
Good to see someone else having fun on rollers.
Use platform pedals rather than cleats when on rollers for emergency dismount if needed.
they are fairly easy to get used to. i was worse than this when i first tried, after half an hour on them the next day i was getting the hang of it. might go for the one footed no hands things sometime, i'll video it and you can all see how many injuries i get..

I like the ding 1:39 (game over)
Such a boss move putting your own fail on You Tube. Rock on brother.
thanks dude, made me lol. The first time should always be filmed, we have all done the same
Hey there.. one thing I noticed is that the front roller is centered behind the front wheel. Try moving it forward.

I would def not be clipping in till I got pretty comfortable
That’s okay, I fell even with a wall next to me 😂
Good save!
I read the description and laughed haha. If you're just getting into road cycling you need much more experience with smooth cadence and bike handling to be able to run on the rollers
i think that he now knows well enough that it was way too early.
lol. thanks for the laugh. to everybody else -- try it in a doorway first so you can support yourself on either side
Yes, doorway is the way to go. And make sure you find the right gear beforehand.
:-D Great Job, you made difficult look impossible :-D lol
wow you just saved me money. i was actually considering buying that but now ill jus buy the stationary
You put in effort
I wondered what the crash hat was for.
It's a "step" so you can put your foot down, or stand on it to get on the rollers. Doesn't work very well in my experience...
I am put off now. Was thinking about making a set
Roller tip: don't look down look ahead and pick a gear that will move your wheel with more effort.
This is what road cyclists do best at - falling over. It is most popular to fall in groups.
Thanks for the upload although I think for my first attempt on rollers I will try without the clipless - looks way too tricky
Good effort, I might have a go!
@MrAlexAdamson I started with really plain, simple, clean flat rollers and had no problems
You know you're new to cycling when you go straight on to drops
Oh, and clipping in: Genius
It like riding a bike for the first time again!
The master of disaster
that looks hella dangerous! lol
I think you managed to last longer on the rollers then I did the first time I tried... 8-)
*than*
the first time i had one. it tooke me a few minutes to figur it ut. what i did was go to a harde gear and prop your self to pedal one side and then dont forget to press tge brakes!! then alakazam your on it
He didn't keep the golden rule.... Don't look down! Poor guy... That gonna hurt!
If you ride 100rpm. smoothly on road. rollers are easy. The reality, most riders will never learn either..
Randomly get this in my recommendation
Better than I would do with just a hand truck
14 years ago!
Who created roller for indoor bikes? So unprofessionally crazy
I am lucky to have a nice road out the front of my place.
They don't make so much noise like those blue ones, what brand is this?
He was doing alright until he let go of the dolly. I like how after he fell he just said, "Nope, another day maybe." Discretion is the better part of valor.
How do you like these rollers? I debating getting these or a trainer.
I did the same thing mate, it's bloody disheartening :)
put roller blades on the sides. wont fall off. try it between a doorway
Any home trainer so dangerous that it requires you to wear a helmet is probably not a good idea
i was thinking about buying rollers i think i might just go for the trainers
2 very happy men in my house fighting over this Super product
lol...handtruck! seems these first-timer videos are popular...
Is was the rain outside?
So, how do you feel when you fall? Oh, shit, I think I scratch my bike!
Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha!
this video made me feel anxious
wish i could unlip as fast while falling as you, they unclip multiple directions or just one?
You just started to get into road cycling? MAN you get a nice bike, is it carbon frame?
apply the breaks before mounting on the rollers
If you're a first timer you shouldn't use cleats first because it's hard to balance if you unclip
lol @ 1:40 haha, nice vid
Note to self: Never fucking clip in the shoe on the first time riding with rollers.
You know the same physics that keep you upright while your riding on real road keeps you upright while on rolling road. So I recommend riding more on the road until you can do something like ride steadily in a straight line.
14 year old comment. Damn
It’s happened to all of us. It’s alright 😂
dammit....i was hoping for a more spectacular crash
Good thing he was wearing his helmet.
Time to find a new sport!
I mean you failed miserably but hey, not bad, way better than I could do!
after how many scratched or broken bikes??? lol
LOL
Nice One.....
hahaha it's alright bro!!
